Rep. Clyburn Questions Republicans’ Christian Faith: They Think ‘There’s Something Wrong With Feeding People When They’re Hungry’

In a sit-down interview for Odyssey Networks’ special series “Faith in the 2012 Election,” Rep. James Clyburn (D-S.C.) discussed the intermingling of religion and politics. Among his more unusual comments, he said that Democrats more fervently adhere to the U.S. Constitution than their Republican counterparts. He also took aim at conservatives’ purported lack of generosity, claiming that they think “there’s something wrong with feeding people when they’re hungry.”

“No campaign should be built upon faith,” Clyburn explained at the beginning of the interview, maintaining his strict adherence to the separation of church and state.

The congressman also tackled the main reason why he believes Democrats and Republicans appear to be so different when it comes to their engagement with faith and religion. What he meant here, of course, is that many people view conservatives as more religious than those who find themselves on the left side of the aisle.

“Democrats, by and large, have always been pretty strict adherents to the Constitution,” he said. “We believe in the separation of church and state.”

Rep. James Clyburn Claims Republicans Dont Like Feeding the Poor | Christianity

While Republicans would likely find this assessment offensive, seeing as they, too, see themselves as acting in compliance with the Constitution, Clyburn wasn’t done there. He continued, claiming that those on the right, despite touting God, don’t act in a Christian manner.

“What we’ve gotten from a lot of my Republican friends has been a lot of recitations of their faith, but when it comes time to fulfill what we find in Matthew 25 — do ‘unto the least of these’ — to them there’s something wrong with feeding people when they’re hungry,” he said. “This is not the Christian way that you do things.”

At the end of the video, the congressman circles back to the misuse of faith and claims that it is “abused a whole lot.” But, Clyburn believes this is nothing new, as he reports seeing people take to “the floor of legislatures” to use Bible scriptures to justify slavery.

Watch the controversial comments, below:

These comments come as the Democratic Party is catching negative press for first removing, then reinstating, a reference to “God” in its 2012 platform.

Nowhere in the Bible does it say “take someone else’s money, and go feed the poor”.

It does say we should sell what we have to feed them. There is a very good reason for this, as there is for everything in the Bible. We need to give from ourselves, not have someone else do it for us. Giving is the important part of that equation, not eating. Very, very important…

In the Liberal Bible there’s a verse about stealing money from your neighbor to feed the poor. The rest of their Bible is pretty much a bunch of Nietzche quotes….and a few chapters on white guilt, social justice, abortion, profits are evil, etc. Fortunately, a cliffnotes version exists so anyone can read and quickly understand their beliefs…maybe you heard of it… Rules for Radials.

      @GEMANN

In addition, the left believes in taking money from one group of people, limiting their ability to feed themselves, so the left can say they are helping to feed another group. Clyburn, a pompous ass, is just trying to make those, from whom he wants to take, feel guilty, while he demonizes forced givers to the group he wants to reward. Instead of using all those campaign contributions that fuels the left’s insatiable thirst for power, why not us it to help the hungry? Lead by example. No, they lead by spreading their feel good BS. They really don’t care for those whom they see as unfortunate. They’re just buying votes at someone else expense.

Democrats despise God and hate the truth. There is no principle of the separation of Church and mind as Clyburn seems to think. Clyburn is a typical Democrat. To Democrats it is ok to talk about God unless he has any influence in how you live your life or vote. If Clyburn does not believe that faith should play a role in his campaign, he has not yielded his life to the sovereignty of Christ and is not a Christian.

First, he says, “No campaign should be built upon faith”.
Then, he criticizes Republicans for allegedly not following their faith.
Finally, he criticizes them for ABUSING their faith!

      They’ve set up a catch-22:
If Republicans set up a soup kitchen, feeding and caring for the hungry, they’re evil for imposing their faith on the hungry and stupid for following Christ’s teachings.
If they don’t set up a soup kitchen, they’re evil for letting the hungry starve, and criticized for acting “Un-Christlike”.

It is difficult to feed the poor due to the regulations imposed by the government. Our options are few because of restriction. I would love to make a huge pot of soup and serve it to the poor who have spent a night out in the field, or under a tree. This would get you arrested. Our choice is to give money to local charitable origanizations who Feed the Hungry, like the Salvation Army etc, or donate to your local Food Pantry. I would rather give in a labor of love with the kettle of soup, than in money which can be diverted to other causes. I do however trust the Salvation Army, and our local Food Bank.

No it’s about keeping the poor on the government plantation. Keeping them under the thumb of Washington and buying their votes.

In the Bible it also talks about the lazy being left to fend for themselves! “For even when we were with you, we would give you this command: If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat.” Or even ” Whoever is slack in his work is a brother to him who destroys.” True dat. Or how about ”

I passed by the field of a sluggard, by the vineyard of a man lacking sense, and behold, it was all overgrown with thorns; the ground was covered with nettles, and its stone wall was broken down. Then I saw and considered it; I looked and received instruction. A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, and poverty will come upon you like a robber, and want like an armed man.”

Ouch! So the Christian scripture distinguishes betwee the poor and the lazy. Sadly, our government, and Rep. Clyburn, do not follow Godly wisdom on the subject.

They are making the mistake of confusing “low adjusted gross income” with “hungry”. The low income are far from hungry; quite the contrary, they are some of the most over-fed and obese among us. Someone who works his or her tail off at 2 or 3 minimum wage jobs has less to spend than someone who does absolutely nothing.

If you your neighbor has lost is or her job and you know they are struggling, we are absolutely called to help them out with food, rides, bills, etc., but your neighbor that is just chillin’ or “waiting for the right job” should not be given charity; rather, they should be shown the err in their ways.

“if anyone is not willing to work, then he is not to eat, either [. . .] do not regard him as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother.” (2 Thessalonians 3:10-15)

Writing a check to the lazy or proud is not doing them any favors; it’s actually hurting them.

We are all created equal, UP to the POINT of EXERTION, at that point it is up to every MAN to work with his own mind and hands to earn his bread and that needed for those whom he brings into this world. That’s what REAL MEN do, when I here this “MAN UP” slang trash talk from those who are most guilty of neglecting the children they bring into the world by multiple sex partners I want to puke, being a real man is NOT the ability to play game well, physically or otherwise, it’s not being sexy or some kind of sex symbol, or being taught to be full of pride (which is on the top of the list of things that GOD hates). Being a man is simply depending on yourself to take care of yourself and your family and not making excuses, for a long, long time now the RACIST CARD has been the biggest excuse of the lazy tired ass clowns who need to take care of themselves and not cry about me being taxed more to feed their babies, MAN UP!!!! feed yourself and take care of your own, I DO!

Bovine Excrement. I believe in feeding ‘widows and orphans’ but not through the government. The government has incredible overhead and by law, has to treat everyone the same. I give generously to a foodbank run by a group of churches (one of which is my church). I do not believe in feeding ‘sluggards’. The Bible clearly delineates between the duty to those whose poverty is not of their own doing (widows and orphans) and those whose poverty is their own fault (sluggards). Christ preaches ‘Tough Love’.

You aren’t very informed (read Thomas Sowell’s most recent article). It was African Tribal leaders (and their followers) that captured members of other tribes and then sold them into slavery. It may also surprise you that every ethnic group captured members of other ethnic groupos and made slaves of them. Heck, the word slave actually comes from the word “Slav”, which was the name of a nothern European group that were tormented and made prisonors, thus the word slave evolved. It must really frustrate you that slavery still flurishes in Africa. And I’m proud of the way you’re doing all you can to free the slaves of African countries instead of just sitting around and accusing people who’ve never had anything to with slavery of mistreatment of ethnic groups. There are no people in America today that owned slaves and there isn’t anyone in America that was a slave on on any plantation in America. I must correct a mis-staement; the tax-payers and producers in America today are slaves to the Government and work under the threat of violence agaist themselves and their families if they don’t pay the enormous tribute the Government demands – and it’s frustrating to one’s production redistributed to the suckers-of-the Government-breast- all the while demanding more free goods. thanks for your understanding and your hard work to end slavery in America and in Africa.

I, too, believe in separation of church and state. Let the church feed them. Considering the studies done on who’s the most generous it appears that the church not only does it but does it better than government. It’s odd because the Constitution doesn’t mention anything about feeding the poor, but the bible does. SO, how about we let the church be the church and the state be the state and neither will try to do the other’s job.

Unfortunately, many churches have abdicated their true calling. They have willingly allowed the government to do their critical mission. It’s human nature, unfortunately, to allow someone else to do what needs to be done. Social engineering by government has led to our current problems. The answer is always LESS government, but with more people on the public dole, how likely is that happen any time soon?

Yes, churches need to be churches and government needs to be government. I agree.
I also agree that many churches now have failed to step up to the plate when it comes to feeding the poor/helping the poor. Where I live there are so many huge, new churches being built…with the finest entertainment systems and recreational facilities, so there really is no shortage of money. It is kind of obscene to me.That’s why I think churches should be (gasp) TAXED. That tax money should go directly to the food stamp program/welfare program. If the churches are actively involved with feeding/helping the poor, they pay less tax. It isn’t right that some churches do more than others. If the churches can’t be bothered to practice what they preach, then tax them. Maybe it’s time for a little repentance from the churches.

So how old is he? Really, he has seen the bible used to promote slavery on the floor? What floor, when? Are the democrats sick all of a sudden? They must have something that is producing psycosis or something, I have never ever heard such craziness in a convention. Do they really think the way they are all talking will make undecideds run over to their side? Geez, I feel like running away from these crazies, and I know how I’m voting. No wonder West doesn’t get along with these nuts.

Clayburn is a beggar who is using his own people as fodder to get re-elected. He is no more a Christian than Obama or that Wright guy who plays church and coddled Obama for 23 years into what he finished becoming. They are all liars and deceivers, using God and the name of Christ to fool people into thinking because they speak this way they deserve their vote. They are liars who belong in hell.

Get good at fishing and be called greedy. Then they employ their philosophy which is to “give a man a fish and he eats for a day but teach a man how to sign his name to a form and you can seize all the fish and then allocate them however you wish.”

My kids have fished for their supper, they loved it and learned from it….

Maybe libs are education haters after all?

Nah, just anything that can be learned from the Bible.

Well scratch that, they have all learned from the Bible but only so that they can twist and pervert it, revise it and clean it up to their criteria and then spew it out so that believers and non believers will follow without question.

      Hey I figured out….Oofff….

They have learned that others have to fish for them, per the dnc. Sick that they know how to fish the system, and refuse to do other wise. White, black and red.

Lying – every dollar taken from taxpayers poor people get .27 to .30 these people steal from the poor using the $ for their jobs to distribute the .27 to .30 out of every dollar..Replace all Government workers with volunteers to hand out an entire $1.00 instead of .27 to .30 cents.

It has been proven over and over again that CHRISTIANS are not the ones shutting down lemonade stands, or food drives, or prohibiting food distribution to people, whether those people are hungry or not. It always is the left, always.

So many mouths on the left at this convention just flapping away in absolute, total ignorance of fact. godless drones.

Amen, I was looking for someone that remembered the people that were practicing, not preaching and as a result were fined by the local government.

That old infidel wants to mak statements to use in order to down Republicans? He needs to go feed a few of hs own. He is mighty charitable with the hard earned money of others, what he is not using for himself. He thinks black skin makes you eligible for what? Feeling sorry for? Not hardly. Those people are doing better than they are letting on. They want it all. The problem is, like James David Manning said: They are not capable to handle even their own communities in the hood, how are they going to handle a country full of people? Those blacks in porportion to their population have made well just as much as whites have in proportion to theirs. They are not getting my “cut.” If you want to give them yours, based on lies of black politicians who play the “feed me” game, go for it. The white Democrats are jumping on this “feed me” campaign to look like they give a rats behind, when all they want is the vote of fools.

Has he met every Republican or person in the world to see what they have done for others. Well, if he hasn’t he is committing the sin of lying as there are plenty of people that help other people. God Bless All,

No Mr Clyburn…conservatives just believe it’s much better to create the opportunities for these people to feed themselves rather than have to rely on government beaurocrats to feed them…like little pets.
