Who Is Calling ‘BS’ on Obama for His Response on Drones?

Analyst Calls Obama Out on Strict Drone Use Criteria While Former Navy SEAL Says President Said Enough

TheBlaze recently reported that a journalist for The American Conservative was promptly “thrown” out of the Democratic National Convention on Wednesday for asking White House adviser Valerie Jarrett about the Obama Administration’s drone use policy. That same evening, President Barack Obama speaking with CNN shed light on the rarely talked about criteria for launching a drone attack.

Now, Wired writes some experts are calling out Obama on his answers to CNN’s questions, while a military expert told TheBlaze his responses were appropriate.

First, Obama in the interview said the criteria for using drones is “is very tight and very strict.” Here are Obama’s answers for using the unmanned aerial vehicles in attacks (via the Bureau Investigates):

  1. “It has to be a target that is authorized by our laws.”
  2. “It has to be a threat that is serious and not speculative.”
  3. “It has to be a situation in which we can’t capture the individual before they move forward on some sort of operational plot against the United States.”
  4. “We’ve got to make sure that in whatever operations we conduct, we are very careful about avoiding civilian casualties.”
  5. “That while there is a legal justification for us to try and stop [American citizens] from carrying out plots… they are subject to the protections of the constitution and due process.”

Wired called at least two of these points “half-truths.” The ones it questions most specifically are 2, 3 and 5. Wired reports Micah Zenko, an analyst who has tracked the use of drones in wars for the Council on Foreign Relations, saying it is “simply not true” to say every drone launched in an attack was for “some operational plot against the United States.”

“The claim that the 3,000+ people killed in roughly 375 nonbattlefield targeted killings were all engaged in actual operational plots against the U.S. defies any understanding of the scope of what America has been doing for the past ten years,” Zenko said in an email to Wired.

Zenko also takes issue with Obama clarifying at the beginning of the interview that he needed to be “careful” with what he said since some information is “classified.” To this, Wired writes:

But, as Zenko notes, “that is total BS. The president has the authority to declassify anything. That authority was reaffirmed by the White House in one of its first executive orders,” issued in 2009. If the president felt like talking about the drone approval process, he could. Obama doesn’t have to leave the discussion up to unnamed officials, former subordinates, and authored leakers. He chooses to do so, presumably because the issues involved are so thorny.

Siding with Obama protecting classified information, Brandon Webb, a former Navy SEAL and editor-in-chief of SOFREP.com, said in an email to TheBlaze that since drone strikes include sensitive intelligence collection, providing too many details could give the enemy an advantage.

“Some things are better left unsaid,” Webb wrote.

With regard to Obama’s criteria as a whole, Webb told TheBlaze Obama laid everything out in plain language and “anything further would be too much.”

“The administration is under the microscope already for sensitive information leaks, I think they are going to have to walk a very thin line in the future,” he said.

Still, it is with regard to Constitutional rights that Webb says Americans need to be wary. With Congress tasking the Federal Aviation Administration to update its drone regulations to open up the sky further for military, commercial and private UAVs, discussion of the technology’s use above American soil has been a strong topic in the media and among civil liberties advocates of late.

“The larger concern I have as an American citizen is total lack of privacy,” Webb wrote. “Example: using drones to collect intelligence on American soil and on American citizens (already happening in some cases) in the name of homeland defense. We are becoming more Orwellian as a society by the day and it bothers me. American citizens need to vigorously band together to protect our constitutional rights or face a future of living in a government fishbowl where everything is monitored.”

In CONTROL, Glenn Beck presents a passionate, fact-based case for guns that reveals why gun control isn’t really about controlling guns at all; it’s about controlling us. Find out more HERE.

I’m just waiting for the first domestic “terrorist” to be taken out along with their family and a few friends for saying things that Glorious Leader doesn’t appreciate. That will likely be considered terrorism should he be reelected. But only after a thorough investigation by Homeland Security and TSA I’m sure.

During the Bush administration, i heard nothing but “if you aint got nothing to hide then you aint got nothing to worry about”. That mentality has dreadful consequences. All of the powers, much of which were unconstitutional, that the American people let Bush have, without question, have now transfered to the Obama administration and those powers will transfer to the next administration and the next administration and so on and so on. We were told that the patriot act would only be used on terrorists. It is now being used on the American people. Drones flying in our skies? That is not the America that i grew up with.
And now all of the unconstitutional powers that the American people let Obama get away with (NDAA, executing citizens without due process) are going to be passed to the next administration and the next and so on and so on. I have two very young children for whom my heart aches at the thought of what their America will look like.

Is Mittens planning on stopping or lessening drone attacks? Would you neo cons be ok with Russia flying drones over Ohio in order to target terrorists who are a threat to Russia? Acts of war beget acts of war. Some countries use drones, troops, sanctions and embargoes, others use terror. Liberty means nothing to most of you sheeple, joyfully being scanned and groped while supporting politicians who have no intention of restoring your privacy nor that same idea called Liberty. Obama is a Communist, I get that, but we aren’t going to regain our Freedoms and restore our reputation as a great country if we can flippantly ignore violent or oppressive acts done in our name and with our borrowed money.

People around the world do not hate America for our freedoms, they hate us because we have become the big bully of the world. There are multiple problems with the use of drones.

    1) There has not been a declared war.
    2) The United States has declared the world its battlefield, including the USA.
    3) We now openly and flagrantly violate the sovereignty of countries at our own will. Would it not be a declaration of war if Mexico, Russia, China, etc sent in drones to the USA to kill their citizens or American citizens, even if they were the worst of the worst.
    4) We now have a president and a small band of unelected officials deciding on the fate of American citizens without a warrant or without a trial in absolute violation of the constitution.
    5) Now the drone technology is being turned on & against the American people.

This country has completely lost it’s moral compass all in the name of the war on terror. We have become a weak society that now relies on the government to take care of the vast majority of the people in return for the government seizing more and more power and usurping our constitutional freedoms and liberties.

The US helped create Al Qaeda to fight Russia and we are still covertly giving them and other terrorist groups money & weapons to fight our proxy wars in places like Egypt, Libya, Syria, et al. We followed the philosophy of “The Enemy of My Enemy is My Friend” but those friends usually turn the weapons and technology you gave them

Drones give the the government a perfect opportunity to advance their goals without the traditional costs. For example, they can use drones to kill people in other countries they dont like and they dont have to worry about a US body count. Also, the drones can be sacrificed or used to instigate a full-fledged war against another foreign nation.

I’m sorry, but this comment is just ridiculous and I can’t let it go. Using a drone as a mechanism of war is cowardly? First of all, war is supposed to be hell at best. It is supposed to be fought as ruthlessly as possible to bring the enemy to their knees as quickly as possible to bring about a peace and the end of this terrible thing we call war. Qualifying something as cowardly or brave shouldn’t be criteria for whether or not we use a weapon system. Lethality, survivability, and cost should be qualifiers, to name a few.

But lets say we do want to qualify as cowardly or brave. Why do you call it cowardly? A drone is simply a weapons delivery platform. I assume you call it cowardly to use it because the operator isn’t in any danger when he employs it, right? Most artillerymen aren’t in any danger when they employ their weapon systems too. They never see the effects of the munitions they put down range. What about a helicopter pilot that engages insurgents? Often this is done from afar without the pilot himself being directly threatened. What about a tank crew, surrounded by 70 tons of armor and some of the most advanced fire control systems in the world.

Using a drone or a helicopter, an artillery piece, or a tank limits the amount of risk our Soliders are exposed to. Does that make them cowardly? Does riding in heavily armored vehicles to prevent shrapnel from IEDs from ripping through their flesh make them cowardly?

To finish my last thought (I ran out of space) – I don’t like the idea of drones being used on U.S. citizens. I don’t like the idea of drones being used to monitor U.S. citizens. But I wouldn’t call the Soldier who uses one a coward. It is an impliment of war and ought to be used as such. Having drones used on U.S. Citizens (for any means, lethal or intelligence gathering) is a completely different subject.

      @Never,

As a former GI, I agree with you. There is no chivalry in war. It’s no different than artillery.

However, I think the key word in your post was “war”. We haven’t declared war. If we declare a war, define victory, and how to end hostilities then fine.

But we don’t. We could not allow any people into our country from those that harbor jihadi’s. Problem solved. Billions back on the books and thousands still alive. But no, we have to spend for the military industrial complex. We have to nationbuild. This whole fantasy about the war on terror is simply ridiculous. That some 7th century rag head in a cave in Pakistan is going to kill me is just nonsense. Close up the border, screw political correctness and turn people away. Problem solved…unless Canada or Mexico invade.

      Neverfalter-
Artillery men are at risk when they fire their weapons, they would be more so if we didn’t maintain air superiority. Drones have no risk to the operator, not even discomfort. They are effective, but impersonal tools that removes all sense of humanity and accountability from the warfighting experience. It is easy to pull the trigger when it seems like a video game.

Furthermore, is there a rule about what countries we are going to blow people up in? Afghanistan? Fine. Anything-stan? Fine. China? India? Russia? Germany?

Is US policy basically that we’ll fly drones anywhere we like provided that the places we do it at are too puny to fight back? We’ll blow up anybody we like…even Americans…without review or due process? The drone policy now has no end? We have no declaration of war and this process will continue without end?

To fall into complacency, as you advocate with a touch of sarcasm, is to surrender your will to theirs. Nay! I say, Rothbardian, raise your sword on high and let the world hear “I, Rothbardian_In_the_Cleve, will NEVER allow the gobblement to take my Rights!”

Speaking of government fiat. What do you think: is the government building Case-Law, and slowly breaking the ice to confiscate all your gold and silver coins?

Remember that Roosevelt Tyrannus outlawed gold ownership in the ’30′s and all gold confiscated. The courts upheld the government’s right to do that several years ago. However, the story you linked to has nothing to do with that. At issue are $20 St. Gaudens pieces minted in 1933. All but one were believed to have been melted down, so the gobblement has good reason to believe that these TEN were stolen.

I don’t know why my mind would go there when after-all I think it was James Cameron who mentioned exploring asteroids for precious metals so I’m sure they will do that rather than confiscations.

Exactly, “the Gobblement” melted them down, and so they couldn’t be that precious if they wanted to melt them. The gobblement never lies about much bigger things – I’m sure is all honest and strait-forward even the dynamics of how they originally thought all but one was melted down. Weird, and if all of a sudden 10 appear it cheapens the value of the one surviving coin.

How do they pay for such mining without funding it by confiscated precious metals?
