Teenage Suicide Bomber Kills Six Other Teens in Kabul Taliban Attack

KABUL, Afghanistan (The Blaze/AP) — A teenage suicide bomber blew himself up outside NATO headquarters in the Afghan capital on Saturday, killing six teens in a strike that targeted the heart of the U.S.-led military operation in the country, officials said.

The bomber struck before noon outside the headquarters of the U.S.-led NATO coalition, on a street that connects the alliance headquarters to the nearby U.S. Embassy, the Italian Embassy, a large U.S. military base, and the Afghan Defense Ministry.

Kabul police said in a statement that the bomber was 14 years old. A police spokesman told Agence France-Presse the dead and the five others wounded were all street children aged between 12 to 17.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, saying the target was a U.S. intelligence facility nearby.

Jamie Graybeal, a spokesman for the U.S.-led international military alliance, said all coalition compounds in Kabul were currently secure. He said he was not aware of any casualties among members of the coalition.

Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqi blamed the attack on the Haqqani network, one of the most dangerous militant groups fighting U.S.-led forces in Afghanistan. He did not say what he was basing that conclusion on, but the Haqqani group, which is linked to both the Taliban and Al-Qaeda, has been responsible for several high-profile attacks in the Afghan capital in the past.

On Friday, the U.S. designated the Pakistan-based Haqqani network a terrorist organization, a move that bans Americans from doing business with members of the group and blocks any assets it holds in the United States.

The Obama administration went forward with the decision despite misgivings about how the largely symbolic act could further stall planned Afghan peace talks or put yet another chill on the United States’ already fragile counterterrorism alliance with Pakistan.

The Haqqani network has been blamed for a series of high profile attacks against foreign targets in Kabul, including coordinated attacks last April against NATO and government facilities that lasted more than a day before the insurgents were killed. A year ago, they were blamed for a rocket-propelled grenade assault on the U.S. Embassy and NATO headquarters. In June, gunmen stormed a lakeside hotel near Kabul and 18 people in a 12-hour rampage.

American officials estimate the Haqqani forces at 2,000 to 4,000 fighters and say the group maintains close ties with Al-Qaeda.

Earlier Saturday, hundreds of Afghans and officials had gathered just a few hundred meters from the site of the attack to lay wreaths at a statue to commemorate the 11th anniversary of the death of Ahmad Shah Massoud, the charismatic Northern Alliance commander who was killed in an Al-Qaeda suicide bombing two days before the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. The alliance joined with the United States to help rout the Taliban after America invaded Afghanistan a month later in the wake of the attacks.

Do we even have a clear goal anymore for being in Afghanistan? The Taliban and Al Qaeda hate us. The locals there hate us. I’m losing count of how many times our soldiers are being attacked and killed by the same Afghan security forces that they trained. Time to leave.

Hey Folks these people are not animals they are people just like you and I they just were not blessed to be born in a country that is of a culture that promotes the way of freedom as we know it. We need to pray for them instead of hate them. There are millions of Muslims in Kabul who simply do not know anything but pain and sadness and death and they have never even seen a bible or even understand its precepts. Seriously look inward a bit within yourselves. These people who live in Afghanistan are good people who live in horrible conditions, they need the truth, they need a country like the USA to help them achieve freedom. My God, do you not comprehend how horrible it is there, the wars, the murders, the sadness, the violence, the heavy hand of violence that tears them to pieces daily. Check yourselves people, as you sound like a bunch of spoiled brats who look down upon the people who need the most help.

  This was the good (just) war (according to the left) until it was the bad war (after Iraq ended).
  
  Karzai trying to survive politically, so he condemns every FUBAR or SNAFU thing the U.S. military does. I understand that to a point. Meanwhile does he condemn his bother for stealing a billion dollars? That would go a long way to reconstructing infrastructure & making lives better for the people.
  
  While struggling to survive, I don’t see Karzai going out on a limb & leading. He is dead anyway to the Taliban, when the U.S. leaves. So he might as well as go out onto a limb. Or is he holding onto the job as long as possible to let his clan enrich themselves as much as possible? Before the flee to the U.A.E. & retire en masse.
  
  I don’t see a point in doing anything in Afghanistan anymore when the craven, mis-educated President out an artificial timeline for withdrawal.
  
  Why have we not held another round of elections? Too bad Massoud was not assassinated by Al Qaeda as part of the deal for Taliban protection. We could have had real politics. Massoud could have got a coalition of Uzbeks, Tajiks & Hazaras to challenge the Karzai nepotism. Think about that for a minute.
  
  Between the domestic & international left, the Taliban, the Pakistani double game, Iran, & not enough effort by Afghanis as an aggregate whole. It is not worth being in Afghanistan to save anybody.
  
  I don’t think we can defeat anyone until we defeat Code Pink & similar groups.

  Really, why are we there? Who’s the aggressor? I understand your thinking and your heart, but they don’t, nor do they want to. Yes, there are innocents, mostly women and children, but until they are willing to fight for their freedom and denounce Islam, and accept Christ there will be no change. Do you have any ideas on how this might be achieved without the mass murdering of missionaries. Evil is predominate throughout the middle east and will be destroyed by Christ himself, no other. Until then the peaceful are stuck protecting themselves against this evil as it tries to spread its wings around the globe. All we can do is pray for peace while worshiping our Heavenly Father and asking him to open their hearts to the truth. Why does evil exist?

Get the f out of there or start killing all of their religious leaders and purge the country of everyone who wants to be Muslim.
Sooner or later we are either going to die at the hands of these insane idiots or we are going to have to kill them until there are no more of them and the Muslim faith is completely destroyed. These people are all insane or will be once we leave and the evil forces that use children to blow others up takes control and perpetuate more of this evil. The so called innocent are doomed either way. The difference is that with us they have a chance, without us there is no chance. They will either die by us or them or become as they are and evil and then seek to kill us and will justify it because we left them to the forces of evil. I’m telling you we must kill the leaders who use this Muslim faith or it will continue and only get worse … AS A MAN THINKS, SO HE HIS. THINK MUSLIM and YOU WILL BECOME MUSLIM AND PERPETUATE EVIL

Damn. Barely a teenager, really just a kid. Our soldiers are not supposed to hurt women and children (sometimes to their own detriment – remember the award for “courageous restraint”?), but the enemy is doing it to themselves!

  When “Act of Valor” was in theaters I had the same thought. I think all of the fight scenes were based off real SEAL missions? If so, I wonder why we have still been fortunate enough to not have another terrorist attack in the United States, especially with suicide bombers in multiple cities striking on the same day.

My mind has a hard time trying to understand why he would choose street kids if he couldn’t get to his real target. His disdain for them? What went through this young murderer”s mind as he killed himself and them? Just money for his family? Only conclusion is that if they all feel that way, and many Muslim-the- religion- of- peace are here, we are in deep stuff.
