Pat Robertson Tells Husband With Troubled Marriage: ‘You Could Become a Muslim, and You Could Beat Her’ (Poll)

Pat Robertson Tells Husband With Troubled Marriage: You Could Become a Muslim, and You Could Beat Her

Pat Robertson (File)

During the “Bring It On” segment of “The 700 Club” on CBN Monday, host Pat Robertson took a submitted question from a man who complained about his wife not respecting him “as the head of the house.” Robertson proceeded to advise the man that “he can’t let her get away with this stuff” and even suggested that he could move to Saudi Arabia and “become a Muslim” so he could beat her.

To be fair, the Muslim joke was followed by some laughter, indicating that it was perhaps a joke. Still, at best, it was a very distasteful joke. However, later in the segment, Robertson again tells the man he should move to Saudi Arabia.

The man who submitted the question wrote that his wife “has become a real problem” and is disrespectful. “She insults me and even went as far as stretching her hand to beat me…and she refuses to talk through our problems,” the man wrote.

Reflecting on the man’s words, Robertson said, “Well, you could become a Muslim, and you could beat her.”

“He’s gotta stand up to her, and he can’t let her get away with this stuff. And you know…I don’t think we condone wife-beating these days, but something’s gotta be done to make her—”

“Not physically,” co-host Terry Meeuwsen quickly clarified, asking why the wife refused to work through their marital problems.

Robertson went on to psychoanalyze the man’s wife, whom he had never met or spoken to, and suggest that she “doesn’t want to submit to any authority. And she probably had temper tantrums as a kid,” calling her a 13-year-old in a 30-year-old’s body.

“She doesn’t understand authority,” he added. Robertson also explained that “no one made her behave” while she was growing up.

“You can’t divorce her, according to the scripture. So I say, move to Saudi Arabia,” Robertson concluded, both hosts laughing once again.

Why have you guys decided to start reporting on Pat Robertson so often? That’s the thing that seems weirdest to me.

I will add that Pat Robertson is the one who opened up the Republican party to so many Christian conservatives back when he ran for president – he brought many in who previously thought they should stay out of corrupt government’s mess. He’s the one who said it’s time to get involved and clean it up. I believe that’s the real reason he was moved to run for President – to get Christians involved in our country and our government – and I believe that’s a huge foundation of the Tea Party.

“You can’t divorce her, according to the scripture.”

Pat should read all verses pertaining to divorce. There are several instances in which a believer is permitted to divorce and/or remarry if they so choose:

1: If the spouse is sexually unfaithful.

2: (This one is the apostle Paul’s advice) If an unbelieving spouse leaves the believing spouse.

Conclusion: A Christian should wisely choose there potential husband/wife. And if they choose foolishly, should they not be held accountable for their choice? Surely we must suffer the consequences of foolish decisions.

      THAT IS A GREAT IDEA

No judge in America would dare rule against a Muslim who beats his wives. More than one wife and beating wives is demanded of Islam. A cheating wife can be killed too.

Well that might be part of the problem. However its probaly the problem that she came from a good family and he didn’t.He is dysfunctional and wants her to behave like good old dear neurotic mom.His mother who more than likely got beaten by his father. She is unable unwilling to adapt.[Truly in this type of situation why should she?]He probaly hits her and threatens her to the point of a self defensive posture[even if she doesn't make contact]then wants to complain about her actions. Its called deflection. Its the excuse wife beaters and muslims alike use.[Usually in a different context though.]
As to backhanding her.Hate to tell you this ,but you try that with some women you would be killed by them or their families. The only way you wouldn’t is if she is afraid of being jailed for self defense or kept her mouth shut.

Such a dumb question in the first place. But he was right on the Muslim thing. If a woman under a Sharia did this to a husband, father, brother or any male relative she would not see tomorrow, but pay no attention to that. He was the offensive one to point out the hypocrisy of Islams treatment of woman and how they treat problem wives in Saudi Arabia.

As a woman who has been the victim of spousal abuse I am not amused. I am not a liberal by any stretch of the imagination and have never been very politically correct, but the man I married when I was 20 abused my psychologically, emotionally, physically and sexually, he was a youth leader in our church (which does not condone abuse). What he did to me scarred me beyond words and 9 years later I still have to deal with the flashbacks and side effects from the trauma. Pat’s response should have been to say “Pray for your wife, love her despite her actions, pray for wisdom and the grace to be Christ-like in such a trying situation”. I don’t normally say things like this but this is the last straw for me with Pat Robertson, when he isn’t telling people not to adopt kids because they’re too much trouble he is joking about men beating their wives. GRRRR, just GRRR.

She will be forever damaged by the 15 years of horrific abuse leveled at her….her only hope is to give it to God. My sister and I spent years trying to get over everything that happened.

I do think that Pat was trying (and failing) to be funny but that man did not write in to get a laugh; he was asking for direction. It is too bad that he was not given the response you gave in your post.

We only heard one side of the story, that of the man. It would seem that Robertson jumped to conclusions without even considering that the man might be stretching the truth. A narcissistic man would complain that his wife won’t do what he wants, and then embellish, making himself out to be the victim. (Been there. Done that. Got the T-shirt. Bought the whole T-shirt factory. Finally got the courage to leave. Met a REAL man. Married him.)
Robertson should have suggested that the man get to counseling, even if the wife won’t; and then he should have prayed for both of them. Instead, he made a tasteless joke out of it. He was joking, wasn’t he?

He’s old school and doesn’t understand. Men are not valued and don’t exist in the lives of many children. Dads split and government picks up the tab. Then schools comes and all the teachers are female. Of course guns are frowned upon (hunting and fishing) and educational level is the value of self worth (Hard work is for rednecks). Now big strong men that can protect a family are off protecting our country and girls these days grow up without men around and with “EQUALITY”. My friend was angry with the female coworkers of her fireman husband (Yes fireMAN). They keep on and on with the right to hold the same position as men. Her issue was, and I quote, “What female can carry my fallen husband out of a burning building?!?” But he did make the point of making the contrast between Christians and muslims.

The joke is okay, that’s not the bad part. The bad part is the assumption that something has to be done about a wife not submitting to the authority of her husband, and not showing him the respect he thinks he deserves, but which neither we nor Robertson have any way of knowing if he actually deserves.

I remember watching a small segment of this crazed nut on TV.

It was about a wife who said she just wasn’t very interested in having sex with her husband.

Pat Robertson said that she had to have sex with her husband, or that her husband would leave her for another woman.

      @DEMOCRATS.ARE.EVIL

This guy is a religious zealot and complete whack job. Isn’t it obvious?

He continually says moronic things and constantly tries to give some sort of prophecy and continually gets it wrong.

He is a textbook biblical definition of “false prophet” but it’s hilarious so many Christians still follow him and donate to him.

Shows the power of a deluded mind.

He has a right to be anything he wants to be, without your permission. You don’t have to watch him. Are you the zealot police? Do you get to pick and choose who’s over the line with their religion? I don’t watch him, but I’m not interested in shutting him down. Some people like him, and I’m willing to bet they’re not criminals, perverts or drug addicts – he’s probably influenced a lot of people in a positive way over his lifetime and done a lot of good, for whatever reason. And I don’t think he’s ever billed himself as a prophet.

Of course the husband never mentioned he hasn’t bathed in a decade,
      It’s always the wife’s fault.

      @DEMOCRATS.ARE.EVIL

Wait, what are you babbling about?

Are you creating a giant straw man so you can knock it down?

I challenge you to find where in my posts I said I want him shut down.

He never billed himself as a prophet?

      What defines a prophet?

I would argue it’s someone who speaks perceived prophesy.

He has constantly said that the world would end on certain dates and has been constantly wrong.

He has constantly talked about forseeing something and it not happening.

He has even said he has God told him prophesies and again, nothing happened.

Did he ever say he was a prophet? Doubtful, but the way he lives his life and the mindless way people follow him smells of someone who believes they’re a prophet.

I am praying for brother Pat. Joke or not, it is pretty clear that the comments on the air may well raise quite a firestorm. Even the best of us at times may speak without thinking through the potential impact of our words. While we can and should judge the words and actions of others, condemnation is very much another thing. “Let he who is without sin among you cast the first stone.”

What is it that you clowns cannot figure out? It was a joke about the way Muslims actually do handle the situation. They do it right here in America. It is very common for Muslim men to tie the woman to a chair and burn the house down around her. They are constantly honor killing the women. They treat the women like dogs. Pull your heads out of your PC butts and see the world for what it is.
