The activist group “A Is For” is encouraging women to “take back” the scarlet A from being a sign of shame, to a sign of pride.
Originally standing for “adultery” in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “The Scarlet Letter,” the group is encouraging women to wear the symbol in support of what some refer to as “reproductive justice.”
The organization explains on its website:
Every woman, and every man who has ever loved one, must wear the A at some point in their lives: Whether you’re a mother who’s decided she doesn’t want more kids, or a student waiting to start a family until the right time, or a teenager who needs access to Plan B, or a boyfriend who isn’t ready to be a dad, or a husband who supports his wife’s desire to remain childless, or a father who wants his daughter to be able to realize her own dreams before becoming a mom, we all wear the A. And we are standing up for our right to be heard without being shamed. [Emphasis added]
While conservative sites like Twitchy note that in the current context the “A” seems to be a proud symbol for “abortion,” the movement claims the “A” represents the values associated with “women’s rights.”
The organization’s co-founder explained while wearing the scarlet “A”:
“A” is for autonomy. Nobody owns my body but me. I’m in charge of what I do with my body, and having the ownership of my body means that I have ownership of my life…
If you can’t decide when, where, and whether you want to have kids, you kind of basically have no control over anything.
Basically what I’m trying to say here is that I am in control of my physical destiny; nobody else.
This is a very American principle. This is something that this country was founded on. The right and ability of every American to be able to live their life as they see fit. I strongly believe that women share this right, and to me the definition of ‘small government’ means that government doesn’t interfere with my physical determination to do whatever I want to do with my own body.
Watch the video, below:
Twitchy joked that the video is really a lesson in “the importance of being autonomous when it comes to demanding that the government finance your reproductive decisions,” deeming the entire argument “pretzel logic.”
Glee actress Jane Lynch also made a video in support of the campaign, saying:
“A” is for adamant…to those who don’t want cancer screenings, or abortion, or family planning, or birth control, well then by all means, don’t choose it. But I will always be adamant about my right to choose what’s right for me and my body. And I will always adamantly fight for you, my sister’s right, to make your own choice.
Adamant: utterly unyielding in attitude or opinion in spite of all appeals, or urgings, or a**holes. There’s another “A” word for ya! A**holes.
Here is Lynch’s video:
“What does your ‘A’ mean to you?” the site asks.
Twitchy simply responded: “‘A’ is for appalling.”

Sep. 11, 2012 at 1:22am“A” is for Against Gods laws. All those in favor of abortion are really trying to control the consequences for their actions and not control their lust for sex. The choice is made before sex, after a woman is pregnant, then the consequences follow. Our whole society now tries to change the consequences instead of taking responsibility for our choices. Why do you think children of today are addicted to entitlements. They are trying to avoid responsibility for their own lives and determined to have someone else pay for their failure to prepare for their own future by working for what they get. Now these liberals think their lust is more important than the life of another human being.

I’m not perfectly balanced and I trust God to be patient. It’s not my place to question God why He allows broken swords, but I know in my heart that He uses great restraint in allowing us to shape ourselves for or against Him willingly. Sep. 11, 2012 at 5:14amReading the Scarlet Letter was a rite of Passage in high school. On the original book cover it labeled a Romance. So romantic of an author & so contrived, a man seduces another man’s wire while he is away making sure the family has money & food on the table. The illicit couple refuse to do the right thing such as support the illegitimate child Pearl. The child has done nothing wrong, but the parents have.
They couldn’t elope & start anew some place else & raise their child?
They use to have a practice of having several angry women questioning the mother of a child obviously born out of wedlock. They figured with the stress of child birth she couldn’t lie about who the father was or less likely to do so. Now the high minded educated people of today think that is so passe. But they forget that we are talking of agrarian societies that pre-America had very low crop yields. Village society lived on the edge & to have a child born out of wedlock is a big deal. They didn’t do it out of a need for bullying. They did is because it was about economics & survival.
Read some anthropology of the Pacific Islands & Africa & see if child birth &population control ain’t a big deal. The land of Africa is more fecund. Women were allowed to have a luck child. But eventually the parents made efforts to kick their daughter out. That is she had to find a husband. In the Pacific island people literally commit suicide by swimming out to sea because of overpopulation.

Sep. 11, 2012 at 6:10amAh, the “justice” that whiney upper and upper middle class white women snivel about, that they themselves never participate in. You see, abortion is genocide against “inner city” people, and if you need me to translate the code words “inner city”, you probably aren’t paying attention to life in general.
You don’t find abortion clinics just a block from rich suburban areas where these deluded whiney white women live, who rarely if ever actually get abortions. You find them in the inner cities. Just as Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger wished, and as those who pushed Roe v Wade desired. Got to get rid of those undesirable “urban elements”, you see.

Sep. 11, 2012 at 6:30amIn my day (late 70′s-early 80′s) it was BAD to be a slut. Now it’s GOOD? I don’t think so. It’s just the sluts grew up, had children who shared their morals and now think it’s normal. They don’t mention the diseases you can bring home with that attitude. They advocate looseness, and then belittle a woman on the Olympics who chose to be a virgin till, what, 30? I thought it was the woman’s body to do with as she pleased? I remember seeing a video of a woman who got pregnant out of wedlock. They went to his parents, because they were women’s rights advocates where her parents were Christian. They thought they’d be received better because she had decided to keep it, go to college, but not marry the boy. He was going to help her, financially. His parents pushed for an abortion, where her parents were very accepting of her decision. Women’s rights doesn’t mean each woman gets to choose, it means each MUST choose as the movement does.

Choice requires responsibility. Those who are party to an abortion (the mother and father alike) already exercized their constitutional freedom to choose. NOW THEY MUST FACE the constitutional requirement to be ACCOUNTABLE for their choice to have sex. A life is created and they have no right to dissolve that life unless the mother’s life is truly threatened, or if she had no choice in the matter at all!! Even then, I would hope and pray we did all we could to save the new life!

Sep. 11, 2012 at 12:21amI find it funny, for some reason, that these women who heartlessly kill living beings preach all day about choice. “It’s my body, my choice, blah, blah, blah” What I find funny is that they were given the chance at life so that they would have a “choice” to do what is right or to do what is wrong. What makes them any better than the life that they are snuffing for pure convenience? Why should they have a say in anything when they do not reciprocate to the living beings within them? Would they cry foul if one of their ranks was removed because of convenience? No, murder would on their tongues. But what about the choice of the murderer? What if his/her life was improved by removing said abortion advocate? They would want justice. There is no moral difference between abortion and outright murder. Life is life. I cannot fathom the lack of heart, the lack of love that permeates those who advocate for abortion, or “choice”, whatever makes you feel better. I don’t understand it.
