Megachurch Pastor Rick Warren Warns of Socialism: People Who Dont Know God Make Government God

As the topic of religion has once again thrust itself into the national spotlight leading up to the 2012 presidential election, megachurch Pastor Rick Warren warned his church on Sunday to consider four anti-Christian worldviews that are creeping into American culture when they go to the polls in November: materialism, hedonism, individualism and collectivism/socialism, the Christian Post reports.

“People who don’t know God make government god,” Warren said about socialism to thousands of people at Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, Calif. “The highest thing they can think of to make the world a better place is not the church, it’s not God, it’s government.”

He continued: “What I’ve discovered is this: politics is the religion of people who don’t know God…They treat it as everything. Again, there’s nothing wrong with politics; it’s just not the savior.”

Warren also told Christians not to “apologize” for voting for the candidate that shares their worldview, saying the three “non-negotiables”are life, sex and marriage, according to the Post.

“You don’t need to apologize for voting for a Christian worldview which stands up for the sanctity of life, the sanctity of sex and the sanctity of marriage. You don’t need to apologize for that because everybody votes what they believe,” Warren explained.

Christians may disagree with others on issues like the economy and health care reform, but Warren said believers have to be courageous and protect the unborn, traditional marriage and view sex as a holy gift from God.

“If you call yourself a Christian, you need to line up with what God says is the original intent of all three of these things,” he preached.

Warren is not a Republican. He’s a registered independent and says he will never endorse a candidate for president. However, he encouraged all Christians to make their decisions based on the knowledge found in the Bible because it is only thing that “will never lie to you.”

Warren’s sermon, coming shortly after the end of the Republican and Democratic National Conventions, was extra politically charged on Sunday. He told Saddleback Church members to review the official party platforms of both the Democrats and Republicans to determine which party will make decisions based on the principles of Christianity and the Bible.

The Christian Post provides a little insight on the stark differences between the Democratic and GOP platforms:

Both political parties released vastly different platforms. The GOP platform supports the sanctity of human life and traditional marriage and includes stronger anti-pornography language. Democrats, meanwhile, support “a woman’s right to make decisions regarding her pregnancy, including a safe and legal abortion,” and, for the first time ever, same-sex marriage in their platform.

“‘Well, I like that guy’ – that’s a stupid reason to vote for somebody,” Warren said in his sermon. “You need to know their worldview. Read their platforms. And then vote your worldview.”

But Warren told his congregation he knows the Christian faith and its principals are not exactly popular in some circles and is under attack across the globe, adding that the sanctity of life, sex and marriage are “three aspects of the Christian worldview that are hated by this world.”

“Most Christians clam up and shut up because they’re afraid to even stand up,” he added.

Warren recently cancelled plans to host a forum with both President Obama and his GOP rival Mitt Romney in August, due to what he called a lack of civility from both campaigns.

“If ever there was a message that you need in today’s culture, God would say this to you about your faith – don’t be afraid, keep on speaking, do not be silent,” the pastor said. “Everybody else is telling you their worldview. Why should Christians cower in cowardice?”

    @ GOODSTUFF

Govt. as god is part of the Utopian program. This is not a new idea, but a cornerstone. Another cornerstone is the govt. is your family. Think of Hitler’s Germany and Hitler’s Children turning in their parents. This is all old hat, bound to repeat itself if you don’t history. How about Al Gore telling kids to not listen to their parents a few years ago. All by design and on the utopian platform. This has been in the works for almost 50 years and now the hold cards have been shown.

Typical Christian, pointing their finger at someone when there are 4 pointing back at you.

How many “Christians” on here are receiving a government check (military, fed, state, local, pension), government sub-contractor check, subsidy check, social security/medicare check?

If you are, your no more a Christian then the children of Baal, throwing your children, grandchildren and future generations into the fire. Your the professional government (God) worshipers.

How can you look at yourselves in the mirror?

Why shouldn’t a Christian accept a pension that they worked hard to put the money into it and did not have a choice to opt out? We are not “of this world” but we are “in the world” and we can’t help that. You want us to kill ourselves? or eat the grass or what? lol

You should probably also backtrack your suggestion that somehow military paychecks and government contract payments are in any way, shape, or form something to be ashamed of. Our military personnel deserve every dollar they get and in most cases they deserve more. They CERTAINLY deserve better treatment from our current Commander-in-Chief and the buttkissers at the Pentagon.

Really, there is a lot wrong with what you said, too much for me to bother with rebutting. Your comment was really horribly stupid, and I’m pretty sure you didn’t think at all before lashing out at Christians and American patriots.

Who is and who is not a Christian is beside the point. Warren is simply making a valid observation that if God is not the supreme authority then people by nature revere the government as the supreme authority. What’s the hard part?

Even if I were an atheist, I would want everyone to believe in God so the government would not be considered the highest authority.

God knows his people need to work. Give to Caesar what is Caesars and give to God what is Gods.

The difference is who is your master, who do you serve…? Government or God. True! I served my country and even felt it my duty to do so, but I did not worship the very thing I served…its a fine line, when it came to getting ahead, for the most part, I put my faith in God to position me well, temper my attitude and guide me. When I did that, I flourished, when I did not I paid the price alone.

Where your heart is is where your allegiance is. True Christians who put down roots know the difference but its not easy in a world full of deceptions so go easy when you judge anyone accepting a paycheck from government or a pension they earned by doing the work required of them via contract which is a legal and honest form of conducting work versus someone who claims to be a Christian but robs banks on the side. There is a big difference my friend.

“Maybe when his church starts paying taxes . . .”

They aren’t producing a product and selling it above cost for profit or providing services for a price, and the pastor pays personal income taxes on the salary that the elders deem he should have. We take our money after we pay taxes on it and give it to our church to provide a place of worship and for the church to give to local and global causes. If that money is taxed again, actual needy families will go without––not just the lazy, like our taxes pay for. I manage the books at my church and the pastor takes the same salary no matter how much is donated to the church. He drives a rusty old ’88 Ranger and lives in a small 2 bedroom house in a not-so-nice neighborhood.

Much of Rick Warren’s money––and several other pastors––make money on speaking engagements and book deals, which they pay personal income taxes on. The second a church starts selling products and services for profit then they lose their 501(c)(3) status, as they should. And believe me, the IRS checks.

      @WOOL-FREE
Really? You’ve NEVER accepted government money or benefits? So I take it then that you’ve never: (1) Sent your children to public school or gone to public school yourself; (2) Driven a car on the roads of this country; (3) Called the police, fire department, or emergency medical responders; (4) Been before a court to assert your legal rights, possibly with government paid representation on your behalf; (5) Had an immunization, thus taking advantage of legislative enactments ensuring the availability and affordability of what would otherwise be a profitless, or virtually profitless, service; (6) Been married or enjoyed the legal privileges thereof, again requiring legislative enactment and enforcement for it (marriage) to be anything more than mere ritual recognition of a certain caliber of relationship (which could and does exist independent the ritual); (7) Enjoyed economic allowances for having children, which normally would only have wholly negative economic cost while children at least (whereas under the status quo, the government allows you to keep more of the money you would normally be required to give up to enjoy and help pay for all these benefits and more–without this deduction, you would solely lose money for having children); (8) Rented books, movies, music, etc. from the library at little to no cost to yourself.

All of these things ONLY exist because of the government, benefit those who use them, and are not paid for solely by you.

Archon, you’re a moron. You stretch and twist and reach to find SOME WAY that someone should be beholden unto the government. In answer to all of you stupid points:

      (1) I attended public school for 9 of my 12 years, for which I and my parents have paid a hundredfold through taxes.
      (2) Of course I drive on the roads paid for by my property taxes, license fees, and income taxes.
      (3) Never had to call police or emergency responders, though I have certainly been harrassed by them.
      (4) No.
      (5) Immunizations? Man, you’re pathetic! Not since I was a child (again, paid for a hundredfold).
      (6) Never been married.
      (7) Don’t have kids.
      (8) I do not partake in the public library’s offerings.

None of this has ANYTHING TO DO with the discussion we were having, as the few examples you have struggled to bring into this discussion have all been paid for a hundred times over through the thousands and thousands of dollars of income taxes, property taxes, and fees that I have given up willingly.

I have gladly paid my taxes, my renderings unto Caesar, and I am happy to pay more into the system than I take out of it. But I believe that the federal government is criminally overstepping their authority when they want to use my taxes to fund every despicable act under the sun, such as abortion, condoms for promiscuous sluts, and free healthcare for deadbeats.

Infrastructure? Fine. Socialism? Go to hell!

You are a moron, and a tardy one at that.

But I can tell you this coming from me: Warren will vote for Romney as the best choice for President if he voting. I can’t see any Christians in their right spiritual mind will vote for Obama for all his anti-biblical viewpoints and all the anti-Christian bills he passed. Obama is the most hostile anti-Christian in History as proven by his records. Even the anti-Christ can get everyone deceived, and even Satan knows the Bible. Not saying Obama is the anti-Christ, but could Obama be ushering in the anti-Christ as Obama for one world government?? I am not saying he is. For me to be on the safe side and protecting myself I am voting for Mitt Romney. I do not want anything to do with any possible connection to 666. I got to vote what’s right. Funny how you keep on citing the Antichrist Paul. Not an Apostle because the Apostles represent the Twelve children of Jacob. But you like the Antichrist because his teachings are easier to swallow than Jesus’ teachings. Therefore you are working over time trying to get Paul off the lake of fire.

So you see [Timothy] never traveled with Paul in the flesh, because Timothy is a spiritual brother, but not Paul’s brother, and Paul twisted the meaning of Timothy into being Paul’s brother, because to trick Timothy because we are supposed to love our brother. Since Timothy was to come later and the elders laid hands on Timothy – I don’t think he needs Paul’s advice.

Paul has said to circ umcise the flesh. But it’s supposed to be the spirit, because Satan is in all men, because men are not righteous. But because Paul said “The flesh” and that’s what he taught, then watch how people give things up for Lent, but things they can keep far from them, or if it is near in reach it’s actually something that doesn’t mean very much. Paul’s teachings are a prerequisite to burqas.

“God never gives men up to be slaves till they lose thier national virtue, and abandon themselves to slavery” Rev. Richard Salter, Mansfield Connecticutt, 1768. Please remember over half the signers of the Declaration of Independence were ordained ministers. “Unlimited submission and obediance is due to none but God alone. He has an absolute right to command; He alone has an uncontrollable sovereignity over us, because He alone is unchangeable good. He never will nor can require of us anything which is not fit and reasonable. His commands are all just and good. To suppose that He has given any particular set of men a power to require obedience to that which is unreasonable, cruel, and unjust is robbing the Diety of His justice and Goodness.” Rev Samuel West, Dartmouth Massachsetts, 1776….Yup they were Deists…pull the other finger, it’s got flowers….

Now on the other-hand, as Andrew and Philip witnessed that Atheist is the Lord’s strength, Andrew and Philip dig gutters when they should just be leaving the other children and Peter alone. Of course Nathaniel (the other Judas) was away from the kill, and that’s why Nathaniel is a true Israelite indeed not having any guile towards Peter or the other children. Meanwhile Benjamin was watching all these things having his own jealousy because Joseph was more loved than Benjamin and they both drank the wine from the entire bunch. It’s all kind of a mess especially when people will not listen.

The thing about people who think government is God is that they do not know the Father, they know they had a dad, but they don’t know the Lord. They have the brilliance, and fortitude of the Father, but they don’t drink the wine and bread from the Lord, and they say I have no father. Therefore government must be a god.

Mr. Warren allegedly said in the article; “What I’ve discovered is this: politics is the religion of people who don’t know God…They treat it as everything. Again, there’s nothing wrong with politics; it’s just not the savior.”

    He is contradicting himself !
Is he endorsing another “religion” (politics) by also telling Christians “not to “apologize” for voting for the candidate that shares their worldview”?

What did Jesus say about getting involved in the worlds affairs? – John 17:16

Would you not take from that, that if you have a choice to be in control of that, that you not squander that God provided opportunity.
One can be a politician and “not of this world”.
“Not of this world” is not thinking or saying or doing as the world does.

So Warren is a hypocrite, as he says out of one side of his mouth that we should look to our Creator and his Son for salvation and out of the other side, he encourages political involvement which puts people in the devil’s square, the god of this system of things.

If, now, the good news we declare is in fact veiled, it is veiled among those who are perishing,4among whom the god of this system of things has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, that the illumination of the glorious good news about the Christ, who is the image of God, might not shine through. The pastor by his very words endorsed Romney. He says ‘people should not make govt God,’ well the problem with his statement is: most so called christians add fuel to the fire by engaging in the very things he says they should avoid.

When the head of the greatest man born of woman was lopped off, what did the Lord do? call for the head of Pilate, or command an uprising? no, a simple comment about ‘rest’ was adequate. Christian, take note here, and choose your battles carefully. Certainly you have a right as a citizen of the USA to participate by voting for the best man for the job, but please do not make this a divine directive.

If the wrong man gets elected/reelectred, things will surely go downhill in a hurry, but is not the God you believe in greater than man?? yep, I reckon, so vote, be passionate, get engaged, thats your right, but know, that God is still in control, and he is not surprised by mans paltry efforts to dis-place him.

If there was more sincere and hidden prayer, then Mr Warrens admonition would be unnecessary.

‘The effectual and fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.’ So much is ineffectual, not fervent, not prayer, not to say where is a righteous man? God bless AMerica, and vote with your conscious; in this Warren would agree.

God does appoint/cause the Kings of the earth to fall into their places….there is a divine reason and mine is not to question God. His plan is much greater than mine!

I believe this presidents apppointment is to draw us out and question everything we believe, do we believe in government to solve all of our problems, will we serve this master alone and hate the other, or will we see the evil and turn from it?

Distinct choices are being formed in the peoples minds….give us Barabus or give them Jesus. They picked wrongly but there was a purpose behind it. Jesus went to the cross and this was to reflect how evil we are to send him there as an innocent man (just one part of it). Satan does not force anyone into anything, we make our choices and in Gods infinite wisdom and also Grace, he is placing it out there plain and simple for all to see which master they will serve. The day is coming soon I believe that the son of perdition will be revealed.

Satan is the master counterfeiter and he will have his forerunners to the ultimate anti-christ figure spoke of in Daniel and Revelations. Maybe dear leader is that man and maybe he isn’t. Does not matter to me because I’ve already made my choice whom I will serve and it is not government or anyone in it.

      seems you agree with me.

‘Faith without works is dead,’ I’m only adding that too often the christian makes the ‘work’ more significant; all it takes is a ‘little’ faith aimed in the correct direction. The emphasis on ‘prayer’ was that it is supposed to come from a righteous man; which begs the question: where is the righteous christian? find him, and I’ll show you effectual prayer. God bless America

I’ll keep it a mystery where i am from, lest there be prejudice.

Read Rick Warren’s bestselling book from years back,
      “A Purpose Driven Life”.
If it doesn’t strike a chord, nothing will.
He is, unlike any of the evangelical ilk, Joel Osteen, etc.

He is a giver, not a taker-
a simple man, living a simple life,
reaching out to shake some sense, faith & duty
to those who haven’t a clue,
those who take their lives & others for granted.

He’s all about a person, stepping up for him or herself,
      initiating kindness & simple deeds,
blessed by the grace & glory of God…..a PURPOSE for life.

      Common sense prevails-
      he says,
“Don’t vote because you “like” someone,
research & learn their platform, history & solutions,
compare them to your own & vote smart, vote accordingly.

      Common sense prevails-
      just as Clint Eastwood said,
“If somebody isn’t doing his job, you’ve gotta’ let him go” !

All of you who drank Obama’s snake oil,
      four years ago-
it’s time to use your common sense,
no need to kick yourself, it’s too late
but it is NOT too late to redeem yourself.

Hopefully, you’ve come to your senses-
      your common sense
will guide you to vote for Romney & Ryan.
      Write the “failed one” off
and allow our country to heal, revive and prosper.

That is the best thing you can do for yourself,
that is the BEST thing you can do for America !

Well said, Pastor Warren. AND…taxation isn’t charity either. No matter how many times the government tries to say it is…it is NOT!!!!

Rick Warren: “… materialism, hedonism, individualism and collectivism/socialism… .”

He just summarized the Old Testament.

Two of those things are opposites. And the old testament is materialistic? What about the tower of babble parable? And hedonistic? That one is obviously untrue.

Perhaps you should have a better understanding of the definition of what a testament refers to. A better term for your understanding would be covenant, an agreement between two parties. Just because one party does not hold to their part of a covenant does not reflect on the other party. To personalize this, you may indulge in these practices yourself, but that does not mean the bank that holds your mortgage practices these, nor does it mean that your neighbor does because he shares a fence line with you, nor does it mean your car salesman does these things because he sold you the car you drive. Your argument is void of logic and reason and is a feeble attempt at linking God with your bad behavior. Perhaps you should take some responsibility for your own action and state that he just summarized YOUR LIFE.

How many times are gold, silver, and precious stones used and sought after in the Old Testament? How does the G-d of Israel reward his allegedly chosen people? By killing all of their enemies and giving Israel their gold, silver, and precious stones.

Look at how the lying Abraham pimped his wife Sarah to the Pharaoh… for power and wealth. Look at how the magnanimous Pharaoh permitted the lying Abraham and his wife to leave Egypt with their deceit gained wealth, when he really should have killed them both for their deception.

So, in the old testament people had jobs, wealth and wars…wow…your insight is deep! Even back then people were still…..people. Even back then it was said that God was irrelevant and out of touch and people just did their own thing. Even back then people mocked what they did not understand and used religion for the purpose of furthering their own agenda. Satan used scripture against God and his people….why should you be any different? It is amazing how words written so long ago are so relevant today and how similar the hearts and minds of people today are to the very people they criticize in the bible. By the way, it didn’t work out so well for those people who mocked and sneered.
