Fans of Abraham Lincoln, America’s 16th and, arguably, one of her greatest presidents, are in luck. A new teaser trailer for Steven Spielberg’s upcoming film, “Lincoln,” has been released. While it’s only 44 seconds in length, the brief video provides a lens into a motion picture that’s likely to pique the interests of movie lovers and history buffs, alike.
The clip opens with Lincoln delivering the Gettysburg Address. As the voice-over progresses, imagery depicting the Civil War is shown. Then, the camera pans around to a profile of Lincoln’s face. While it’s not much in terms of content, it’s worth watching.
A short description of the film accompanies the clip:
Steven Spielberg directs two-time Academy Award® winner Daniel Day-Lewis in “Lincoln,” a revealing drama that focuses on the 16th President’s tumultuous final months in office. In a nation divided by war and the strong winds of change, Lincoln pursues a course of action designed to end the war, unite the country and abolish slavery. With the moral courage and fierce determination to succeed, his choices during this critical moment will change the fate of generations to come.
While this is a short, sneak-peak version of the trailer, the official video will be released on September 13, during a special, online event. Spielberg and actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt (he plays Lincoln’s oldest son Robert Todd) will appear at a Google+ Hangout, where the full clip will be presented to the public.

Sep. 11, 2012 at 1:24pmIf you believe like i do, that the federal government is too big and does too much – then you can blame the leaders of that time period as it transformed the role of our federal government. We can talk about socialism and Woodrow Wilson but NONE of that would have been possible in this country if it werent for the centralization of power that occured before, during, and after the Civil War.
I wish Glenn Beck would look into this because leaving this out of the ‘conservative’ history books masks the cause and solution to our tyrannical government.

Sep. 11, 2012 at 1:35pmGood for your Nephew, I guess. but is he bothered by how the right will be portrayed in this movie?
Though I’m a fan of (some of) Steven’s work, I’m curious about the timing of this release– just prior to the election. Spielberg made a statement several years back saying his take on Lincoln would destroy the Republicans. Recently he said:
“Our movie is really about a working leader who must make tough decisions and get things done in the face of overwhelming opposition…”
Sounds like this movie may be more Obama propaganda….
Wasn’t it Spielberg who was advising Nancy Pelosi about how to re-brand the Dems recently?

Do we NEED a leftist’s movie of a Republican? What good is it?
There is a hunger for great movies about great people, but we get spin with occasional tips of the hat to allow the biased film maker to say that they respect their target.

My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that.”

Here is the deal with most founders and with Republicans;
Part ONE – The agenda was to end slavery, but in the case of the founders and in the case of Lincoln, the union needed to be secured first. Our nation’s strength and defense were considerable standing together and ready for defeat divided.
Part TWO: – A nation divided between slave holding and non slave holding countries means that the slaves would all wind up in the slave holding country with no one organized effort to free them! In a larger, united country, MANY were active in advocating abolition!

The right of secession was never in question. It wasnt until AFTER the Civil War that the federal government established that not part of the USA could leave the union. Ironically, that was the only thing holding back the wall of tyranny and after the Civil War, there was no limit to federal power

Divided slave and non-slave states? Do you reckon the 4 slave states that remained in the Union, and the additional slave state added during the war, West Virginia, knew what you are talking about?
How about this, that prior to Lincoln calling up 75,000 troops to invade South Carolina – more slave states were in the Union than the Confederacy? 8 in the Union, 7 in the CSA. 4 seceeded After the call to invade. No mention of slavery in their declarations of secession – but nobody quotes those.
Look up Republicans of the time like Karl Shurz, Thaddeus Stevens, Charles A. Dana – and see what their politics were. How about August Willich. Brave enough?

Sep. 11, 2012 at 10:28amDon’t know about the southern accent but I have read that Lincoln’s voice was rather soft. What bugs me is the way most actors read the Gettysburg Address. He was in favor of sending them back to what is now Liberia. Buy their freedom and then ship them back. The importation of slaves had been outlawed decades before Lincoln. Farmers were switching to mechanized farming using newly invented machines. The whole war could have been avoided.

Yep, was thinking of that same quote myself. I do not belong to the Cult of Lincoln. I don’t hate or like the man, I simply approach him as the flawed human being he was. He, and Congress, were content with slavery existing, they just didn’t want any new states chartered as slave states. Had Kansas not gotten sassy in it’s attempt to form as a slave state, slavery would have existed long past the 1860′s (though not much longer, it was economically inefficient and capitalism was driving it out of business). He was a micro managing fellow who happily jailed editors of newspapers for daring to question his policies (Ohio had a few jailed). Last check, the BOR cannot be superseded by “war”, but he didn’t care.
Also, Congress freed the slaves, not Lincoln. The office of the Presidency, at the time, had no power to do that kind of thing. The 13th Amendment, passed in a ConCon via Congress, abolished slavery.
Dunno. Without Kansas, Lincoln would have gone down in history as just another guy in the office. He was not a crusader nor a holy man against slavery bound and determined to force it out of existence, as we’re taught.

Sep. 11, 2012 at 12:26pm“why do Hollywood filmmakers insist on using non-Americans for major/lead roles”
Because in America, acting is considered gay (which it is), so very few real mean (not the effeminate kind) get in to acting. Hence, there are very few American actors to play big tough guy roles. All the real men in America have real jobs. Effeminate “men” get in to acting. In Euope, Australia, etc, acting is not considered gay, therefor tough guys get in to acting all the time.
Nowadays, if Hollywood is looking for a tough guy, they go to England, Australia.
That’s all. But, acting is still gay.

Sep. 11, 2012 at 3:50pmThe answer to your question is because America has very few exceptional actors any more. Look at the powerhouses coming out of the UK and Australia — Kate Blanchett, Tom Hardy, Eric Bana, Jude Law, Charleze Theron, Daniel Day Lewis, Naomi Watts, etc. etc. Anyone of them could nail a NY accent and we wouldn’t know the difference. Or Tennessee or Minnesota or Texas… and at the same time, be comfortable doing Shakespeare.
Who do we have that do that? Tom Cruise? George Clooney? Will Smith? We have one. One great actress left. Merryl Streep. All the tough dudes are too old… Pacino, DiNiro… Sad.

Sep. 14, 2012 at 1:36amSoyBomb Principle trumps everything. If there is a conflict between what the spirit or foundation of the law would require, and what the letter of the law would require, then it is necessary to break the letter to fulfill the spirit.
This nation was founded on the principles of “Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.”
In order to be living according to our charter we had the moral obligation as a nation to force slavery to end.
Just as a criminal loses his rights when he commits murder, so did the plantation owners lose their right to secede when they kept fellow americans in slavery. Those who violate the law, whether in letter, OR IN SPIRIT, cannot ask for protection the of those rights. The only moral course of action was to stop slavery at any cost AND keep the union together. If that meant the death of every single plantation owner, then not only would it still have been a just cause, but that would have been a just dessert for those evil men.
