Are peanut butter and jelly sandwiches racist? A bizarre question, to say the least, but one that at least one school administrator is asking out in Portland, Oregon. Verenice Gutierrez, principal at Harvey Scott K-8 School, seems to believe that there are racial connotations associated with the common lunch-time meal.
According to Gutierrez, using the example of a peanut butter sandwich in classroom lessons is technically a problematic and discriminatory move — one that was made by a teacher in her building last school year. While such a notion may bring out laughs among those who find it absurd, the principal explains her logic.
“What about Somali or Hispanic students, who might not eat sandwiches?,” she said. “Another way would be to say: ‘Americans eat peanut butter and jelly, do you have anything like that?’ Let them tell you. Maybe they eat torta. Or pita.”
Somehow, by mentioning a food that the majority culture regularly eats without also discussing other meal options, the teacher was purportedly violating discrimination standards. So, to combat any additional PB&J-related offenses, the principal is treading carefully. And she’s not alone.
Portland Public Schools is in the process of integrating “Courageous Conversations,” an equity training that has been coming in phases over the past few years. The Portland Tribune explains the district’s intentions, in detail:
Through intensive staff trainings, frequent staff meetings, classroom observations and other initiatives, the premise is that if educators can understand their own “white privilege,” then they can change their teaching practices to boost minority students’ performance.
Last Wednesday, the first day of the school year for staff, for example, the first item of business for teachers at Scott School was to have a Courageous Conversation — to examine a news article and discuss the “white privilege” it conveys.
The demographics that are present in the district have apparently led leaders to tackle this purported “white privilege” issue head-on. Currently, 50 percent of students at Scott K-8 are Hispanic, 15 percent are black and nine percent are Asian.
Naturally, there’s some controversy, especially considering the subject at hand. One parent, in particular, as the Tribune notes, has railed against a lunch-time drum class for black and Hispanic boys at the school (the parent believes it discriminates against women, girls, Asians, whites and Native Americans).
Gutierrez, though, claims children weren’t turned away and denies that offering a minority-specific class amounts to discrimination.
“When white people do it, it is not a problem, but if it’s for kids of color, then it’s a problem?,” she said. “Break it down for me. That’s your white privilege, and your whiteness.”
The Tribune has more about the principal and the district’s program that she’s seeking to utilize in the school:
Like many if not all of PPS’ leaders, Gutierrez has gone through California-based consultant Glenn Singleton’s “Coaching for Educational Equity,” a weeklong seminar on race and how it affects life; she’s also become an “affiliate,” certified to teach the equity curriculum; and she serves on the district’s administrative committee to address systematic racism, a group that meets every other week.
“Our focus school and our Superintendent’s mandate that we improve education for students of color, particularly Black and Brown boys, will provide us with many opportunities to use the protocols of Courageous Conversations in data teams, team meetings, staff meetings, and conversations amongst one another,” Guitierrez’ letter to staff reads.

Sep. 11, 2012 at 1:23pmThat’s how the left defines individuals..not by character but by secondary criteria like race, political leaning, sexual orientation, etc. Everything is put through that filter. Imagine..”educators made to understand their own white privilege”…what kind of a mind comes up with lunacy like that? A leftist mind of course. In other words..loathe yourself for being white and make sure every utterance from your mouth also includes an acknowledgement to another culture or race even when discussing something as mundane as peanut butter and jelly sandwhiches (never mind that peanut butter was brought about by James Washington Carver..a black man), just make sure you mention “pitas” ( “pita” is Greek by the way..gosh what an oppressed culture they are) or “tortas” in the same breath. Bow at the altar of “diversity” and understand your sin of being white. Get your mind around that for a moment…being white is a detriment in these idiot leftists’ eyes.

Sep. 11, 2012 at 1:26pmThen by their own logic, inviting white children into the drum party would teach them more about other cultures and races. It’s that what the original “white privilege” intended to do? So is it “black or Hispanic privilege” to exclude a white child from their cultural activities? While the “white privileged group DID NOT try to exclude anyone, so who is the racists. These people are insane.

Sep. 11, 2012 at 1:29pmWell that won’t work until they come up with decent trade school training, most black and brown (to use her term) are not going to college, and there are no programs in the schools for trades. That is why there is such a high black young men unemployment rate. I have been on a soap box about it for years, everyone only pushes the college bound and there is nothing, I repeat nothing for those who can’t or won’t do well in college. There are plenty of white kids who need it too. We still need plumbers, electricians, carpenters, mechanics, and the schools ignore all of those kids who need training. So let’s sit around and worry about the white experience while these kids do not get what they want or need. Stupid, stupid left wing idiots. I guess their jobs are just supposed to make them feel good. Jerks. The trades are unworthy of being in the schools, that might be demeaning. Bah.

The only difference is here they think they will be the ones in control instead of being the ones on the bottom. Sep. 11, 2012 at 1:36pmI can just imagine this Verenice Gutierrez, in her Diane Sawyer whiny way, extolling the typical leftist anti-American virtues she intends on implementing in her school and other schools around the U.S. This is a classic example of what is wrong with our education system. The kids that are eating breakfast, lunch, and now dinner for free, or at our expense rather, should eat their PB&J and like it or, they can go without. The alternative, Ms. Gutierrez could whip up some enchiladas or greens on her own time for those that choose not to eat what is served, and have them over for eats at her home after school. I did not eat at a restaurant everyday while growing up and our kids shouldn’t have that right either. Now, I have to finish my peanut butter and jelly sandwich.(with butter)

Sep. 11, 2012 at 5:12pmWe should not be upset about this. America is a “melting pot” remember. I remember this term being propagandized to me in school, and how it’s such a wonderful thing to live here with so many different cultures all living in harmony. The truth of the matter is that cross culturalization is an absolute nightmare; especially when the johnny come lately cultures seek to destroy the grassroots culture that created this nation. This story is a perfect example of this. I realize now that the U.S. has no culture; none worth defending anyhow. Anything, I repeat anything that is American can now be considered racist; even peanut butter and jelly. It makes me sick to realize that my country is now in the hands of those who were never born here and who have different cultural values to remake the country’s values however they see fit. Don’t speak about ANYTHING American if there are others present who did not grow up, or chose not to grow up without American ways of life, or you will be judged racist by the new society this country has morphed into.
America is anything but what I grew up believing it was. It’s not the grassroots America anymore. It’s been hijacked by the rest of the world. I curse the term “melting pot” and the fact that I was once fooled by it makes me sick.

Peanuts, which are native to the New World tropics, were mashed into paste by Aztecs and Incans around 900b.c. Evidence of modern peanut butter comes from US patent #306727 issued to Marcellus Gilmore Edson of Montreal, Quebec in 1884, for a process of milling roasted peanuts between heated surfaces until the peanuts reached “a fluid or semi-fluid state.” As the product cooled, it set into what Edson described as “a consistency like that of butter, lard, or ointment.” In 1890, George A. Bayle Jr., owner of a food business in St. Louis, manufactured peanut butter and sold it out of barrels. J.H. Kellogg, of cereal fame, secured US patent #580787 in 1897 for his “Process of Preparing Nutmeal,” which produced a “pasty adhesive substance” that Kellogg called “nut-butter.”
Technically Hispanics invented peanut butter and whites brought it to the modern world. Peanut butter should offend Hispanics since it’s theirs.

Maybe they should send a letter to all the students to take home and bring back the suggestions send by the parents and if it is so very important they could have another meeting. But cut the crap we are humans and most of us can still discuss ideals. Each area of the world has different eating habits and some feed back just might work?

I am so very glad that I do not live in Oregon, because I would certainly home-school my children if I did.
You look at a peanut butter sandwich and see racism. Everything is race, or color to people like you. You label people, put them in groups, compartmentalize people. If there is anything that is racist, it is people who do things like that.
How about this novelty: judging a person by the content of his or her character, instead of the color of their skin?
I would almost say that you are being racist against blacks by singling out peanut butter, which was an unpatented, re-invention of George Washington Carver, a great black inventor.
Just because some people eat PB&J sandwiches does not make them racist, anymore then someone who eats pita sandwiches, or Somali food all the time. We eat what we are comfortable with.
How about introducing the Somali food and pita eaters to PB&J sandwiches, maybe they would like them, and vice versa?
And as far as your racist statement about “white privilege?” white people have no more privilege than anyone else, in fact, since the Civil Rights Act, white people have had less privilege, and people of color more. There are two people, one white, one of color, who have the same high school education, but the college picks the person of color, because they are forced to by a law called Affirmative Action. Then the person of color gets grants and other financial aid based solely on their skin color,

Sep. 13, 2012 at 5:44pmI thought I had heard it all but an attack by a hispanic prinipal on PB & J is going over the edge of sanity. The principal is a fool if she thinks that America would stand for her useless suggestion.
Listed above is a post by ChiefGeorge who has a grip on reality. Read his posts. It is people like this women who causes so much trouble. And she is a principal? Screw her…
et’s see… No more Pledge of Allegence to our flag, No more prayer to GOD or even a silent prayer and No more Peanut Butter & Jelly for the little kiddies who could care less about the principals views or politics.
If I were to move to any country I would have to either adapt to what is offered or send my kids to school with a homemade sandwich that complies with my religion. Why can’t the school order the same for the students who are enjoying OUR school system. Make PARENTS responsible for their children. Schools are for learning, not for codling the kiddies or their wimpy parents.
It’s like having Special Classrooms for PREGNANT girls. Send them to another location instead of putting them on public display in our schools. Send the fathers there as well if they can be ID’d and are in the school system. Rent out some of the vacant Strip Malls and convert them to Pregnatcy School for mommies & daddies. America is Failing from Within and mainly due to our Leftist democrats who live for the day that they can force their views on others. God, please help our children – our parents are beyond redempt

Oct. 2, 2012 at 2:00pmFood stamps are predominantly used by white people. Nice racism there, Resist.
The issue here is not the menu but if you use PB&J as an example in a lesson/lecture, whether that gets in way of kids understanding the lesson if they don’t know what a PB&J sandwich is.
Personally, I think explaining what a PB&J sandwich is, well… That’s not a difficult thing to explain so I don’t see it really causing any issues.
I do think there are things that get used in tests and lesson plans that might be hard to explain to a kid who’s never seen one though.

But they are not being taught to be American in our own American schools! Divide by race! Divide by culture! Enough! They think they are being inclusive, but they have no idea they are being divisive!
I enjoy cultural diversity, but there comes a point when you have to drop the dividers and look for the common factors. “Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand:” (Matthew 12:25). We can’t keep going like this, catering to every little complaint. We have to do something before there is no America left. Write your congressman, write your governors. If enough people start making a noise, they’ll have to hear us, even if the media refuses to listen to and represent the common man.
