SOUTH PLAINFIELD, N.J. (TheBlaze/AP) — More than 50 Lukoil gas stations in New Jersey and Pennsylvania were jacking up prices to more than $8 a gallon Wednesday to protest what they say are unfair pricing practices by Lukoil North America that, apparently, leave them at a competitive disadvantage.
Sal Risalvato of the New Jersey Gasoline, Convenience, Automotive Association said the protest was aimed at raising consumer awareness about the challenges facing Lukoil dealers and to get Lukoil to respond to dealer grievances.
He said Lukoil engages in various practices that force franchisees to pay higher prices for their fuel than competitors. It is not uncommon for Lukoil dealers to see a competitor selling gas to the public for considerably less than what they’re paying Lukoil for their latest delivery, he said.
“We were all at a breaking point,” Risalvato said.
Lukoil is Russia’s second-largest oil producer. The first Lukoil-branded service stations in the U.S. opened in 2003 and today the company has more than 500 in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic.
The gas station association said the high prices were meant to get the attention of customers so they know the price pressures Lukoil dealers are facing.
Gas stations taking part in the protest were planning to hand out fliers to customers explaining why they are struggling to keep down prices and to hang banners asking customers to contact Lukoil.
“They essentially sell the very same gasoline to stations in close proximity of each other at different prices in order to game the market and compete with other gasoline brands,” Risalvato said. “In doing so, the price may differ by as much as 25 cents a gallon, and place one retailer and the retailer’s customers at an enormous disadvantage over another station.”
But Risalvato said the dealers’ complaints go beyond that.
“No matter what the market conditions are on a particular day, Lukoil’s prices are higher than just about every retail competitor,” he said.
Risalvato said the decision to protest began with New Jersey dealers but station owners in Pennsylvania also said they wanted to join in when they heard about the effort.

Sep. 12, 2012 at 2:04pmYea Det,Paper, remember how all the EXPERTS told us we were going to run out of oil? Now it’s Forty years later, and we have ten times as many vehicles, and we’re finding more oil than we know what do do with, LOL. Beware of experts bearing bad tidings. Never let a crisis go to waste, is their battle cry. The experts said the Titanic wouldn’t sink. They said the Twin Towers could survive an air plane strike. THE EXPERTS ARE JUST SKILLFUL BU!! SH@TT*RS!!! They tell us that fossil fuels are not renewable energy sources. When did the earth stop making it? They say wind, and solar are green energy. Yea right, those windmills, and solar panels look so natural. Every time I see them I feel like I in a post card, LOL. What in Gods name could be more natural than fossil fuels?

Sep. 12, 2012 at 6:29pmI worked for a Oil Refinery in Long Beach when that happened. We were contract welders, and had to wait in line every night to fill our welding machines until we finally told them it took too much time, so we would have to work elsewhere. The next day they opened up a Gas Tank for us to use at the Refinery, and we could fill our personal cars twice a week as well. Every storage tank was Full at the Refinery, the Half Way Tank Farm was full as well, and the Terminal where we off-loaded Oil Tankers had all our tanks full, and we had 11 tankers anchored in the harbor because we had no room. We had even transferred some of our oil to Bakersfield by Pipeline to store, and they claimed shortage. I can’t speak for every Refinery, only what we had heard, that they had just as much oil at the time of claimed shortage. They sent Government Inspectors to each Refinery, I only saw ours outside his lush office once, and never at the harbor. I’m sure he was well tended upstairs….

Sep. 12, 2012 at 6:35pmValero gas has been killing fuel filters here and causing engine problems. The repair shop I visited said they had 30 cases this week so far, to include city vehicles who only use that fuel. Typical of cheap low quality fuel. If you want to buy american stick with chevron or exxon etc. There are about 20 different companies that are all American.

Sep. 12, 2012 at 8:50pmLukoil & Valero are both paying dividens to the socialists. Oil from the middle east is paying for Islamic terrorism (remember the tax Muslims must pay that is in part used to fund Jihadism)?
We need to drill our own oil, mine our coal, build more nuke plants, put up windfarms where it blows and solar panels where it shines.

Sep. 12, 2012 at 9:45pm@Airbornedevildog, from a fellow Devil, you should really fact check what you are saying before you post it. Though Chevron and Exxon did start out as American companies selling American oil products, they are now about as American as a pickup game of cricket. Most of the oil that is sold here in the U.S. comes from foreign nations, it doesn’t matter if it is being sold by Valero or Exxon, it comes from somewhere else. That said, you really shouldn’t buy from Citgo because that brand of fuel is owned by the socialist nation of Venezuela. It is just unfortunate that Valero and Venezuela start with the same letter. For alot of people, that seems enough proof to claim that they are the one and same. But, what can you expect from a species that once thought it okay to hold witch trials.

Sep. 13, 2012 at 1:05am@DMERWIN – Station owners have to sign contracts with suppliers. Almost have to give up their first born to get out of them before it ends. $8 a gallon is the next best thing they can do. Complain all they want with no results – BUT…loosing huge profits in a single market area ABSOLUTELY gets their attention. Many markets loosing profits could make some managers loose their jobs. Lets hope so! SHEETZ….TAKE NOTE!

Sep. 12, 2012 at 9:36pmWhy not buy the rest of the world’s oil until we have the remaining easily accessible wells and then export it for gobs of cash like the Saudi’s do? Of course, I believe in the “theory” of abiotic oil and thus know that oil is continuously being produced so long as the ground beneath our feet contains carbon and hydrogen in an anaerobic environment at high temperature and pressure. So this idea probably won’t work.

Sep. 12, 2012 at 12:02pmThey are under contract and likely have serious penalties. They are in a legal situation, but their point will be well taken.. They will win this one. They can’t sell gas at the prices they are forced to anyway. It is possible that Lukoil killing them on purpose so they can have the franchises themselves, which is an anti-trust issue they will lose as well. BP attempted this int he 80s although what they did was drop prices at a loss to kill adjacent competitors. Any legitimate Attorney General would have been on this already,.
