Sam Baciles Anti Islam Movie Sparked Deadly Protests in Egypt, Libya

On Tuesday, Americans remembered the lives of those individuals who were mercilessly killed during the September 11, 2001 attacks.

But on the same day that the 11th anniversary of the tragedy was being remembered, two notable, anti-American events unfolded in the Middle East — in Egypt, Islamists tore down the American flag at the U.S. embassy and, in Libya, radicals burned down the U.S. consulate and killed a U.S. diplomat. These actions were taken, not as a result of the 9/11 anniversary, but in retribution for an obscure anti-Islam and anti-Prophet Muhammad film that was produced in America.

Sam Bacile, 56, the movie’s writer and director, has gone into hiding following the violent reaction to his film. An Israeli, Bacile lives in California and works in real estate development. While filmmaking isn’t his main source of income, he put together the inflammatory movie in an effort to expose negative attributes that he believes come from and are associated with the Islamic faith.

The self-described Israeli Jew told the Associated Press, from an undisclosed location, that Islam is a cancer and that the film was intended to make a political statement, while condemning Islam on the whole. The English-language movie spans two hours and is entitled, “Innocence of Muslims.” Bacile claims that more than 100 Jewish donors helped put up the $5 million to make the film, which has reached no measurable level of success, possible.

“This is a political movie,” Bacile told the AP. “The U.S. lost a lot of money and a lot of people in wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, but we’re fighting with ideas.”

Naturally, considering his view that the faith is a “cancer” and examining the fact that he intentionally sought to target Islam, there’s no surprise that the content presented within the film is disparaging and offensive, to say the least. Muhammad, Islam’s most revered prophet, is made to look like a fraud. His followers, too, are depicted as fools.

“Innocence of Muslims” depicts Muhammad as a feckless philanderer who approved of child sexual abuse, among other overtly insulting claims that have caused outrage. In a 13 minute 51 second trailer, the Islamic prophet is made to look like a murderer and adulterer as well.

Among the insults are insinuations that the Koran is made up and that Muhammad is anything but prophetic — two notions that chip away at the very fabrics of the Islamic faith.

Under the YouTube account “sam bacile,” a supposed trailer for the controversial film is posted (caution: sexual and disturbing content):

It is a well-known fact that Muslims find it offensive to depict Muhammad in any manner, let alone insult the prophet. A Danish newspaper’s 2005 publication of 12 caricatures of the prophet triggered riots in many Muslim countries. And this, of course, is only one example.

Though Bacile was apologetic about the American who was killed as a result of the outrage over his film (reports allege that three other American embassy workers were killed in Libya as well), he blamed lax embassy security and the perpetrators of the violence.

“I feel the security system (at the embassies) is no good,” said Bacile. “America should do something to change it.”

A consultant on the film, Steve Klein, said the filmmaker is concerned for family members who live in Egypt. Bacile declined to confirm. Klein said he vowed to help Bacile make the movie but warned him that “you’re going to be the next Theo van Gogh.” Van Gogh was a Dutch filmmaker killed by a Muslim extremist in 2004 after making a film that was perceived as insulting to Islam.

“We went into this knowing this was probably going to happen,” Klein said.

On Tuesday, there seemed to be confusion surrounding which film had inspired violent protests in the Middle East. Some claimed that the anti-Islam, Koran-burning pastor Terry Jones, whom TheBlaze has frequently covered, was behind the movie. However, Jones is merely promoting the film; he was not involved in its production.

The Atlantic has more about the movie, with additional background details about how Bacile’s offensive project sparked deadly Middle Eastern protests:

The movie is called Innocence of Muslims, although some Egyptian media have reported its title as Mohammed Nabi al-Muslimin, or Mohammed, Prophet of the Muslims. If you’ve never heard of it, that’s because most of the few clips circulating online are dubbed in Arabic. [...]

Obviously, there’s a lot to this story that’s still unclear. What we do know is that some members of Egypt’s sometimes-raucous, often rumor-heavy media have been playing highly offensive clips from the highly offensive film, stressing its U.S. and Coptic connections. In the clip below, controversial TV host Sheikh Khaled Abdallah (known for such statements as “Iran is more dangerous to us than the Jews” and that Tehran had engineered a deadly soccer riot in Port Said) hypes the film as an American-Coptic plot and introduces what he says is its opening scene.

Bacile’s film was dubbed into Egyptian Arabic by someone he doesn’t know, but he speaks enough Arabic to confirm that the translation is accurate. It was made in three months in the summer of 2011, with 59 actors and about 45 people behind the camera.

The full film has been shown once, to a mostly empty theater in Hollywood earlier this year, said Bacile.

  We can’t vote Obama out soon enough. I didn’t vote in 2008. I almost wanted Obama to win because I wanted people to wake up. I never expected Obama was going to be a worst President since Woodrow Wilson. I’ll be voting this year and I’m making sure my entire family goes with, because I know every one of them plans to vote for Romney.

  You seem to be Goebbels biggest fan. But more to the point, Goebbels produced propaganda to justify the Holocaust. His films carried a government stamp of approval. His intentions were quite clear. If you want to argue that this film was intended to justify killing Muslims than go ahead and and try to prove it but don’t you dare try to insinuate that the producers are somehow responsible for what happened in Libya. People are responsible for their own actions not for how others respond to those actions.

  I am deeply offended by the actions of individuals both in Eygpt and Lybia. If we were to go by the eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth, then Lybian Ambassador would need to be suffocated along with some of his staff members here in the US. But our culture and society doesn’t deal with issues and offenses in that way.
  @Shiroi Raion, I was curious and looked up the phrase you placed on your comment. It is a statement telling you to eat feces. I do hope you didn’t allow this individual to put his left hand on you, as he probably uses it to clean himself instead of toilet paper. The style of the film is such that only a complete idiot would take what it says at face value. Goebbels produced propaganda intended to justify murder while this is at best a satire intended to demonstrate how criticism of Islam and Islamic culture has become taboo. Aren’t you one of those who opposes Sharia being imposed on Americans? That’s what this film is trying to say. The whole point is to show that people have become too accommodating of Islamic customs even when they clearly violate the law.
  
  But rather than see it that way your need to blame Jews for everything from corporate corruption to the sinking of the Titanic causes you to see Jews as being responsible for the death of an American diplomat at the hands of complete strangers in an unstable country halfway around the world.   You can not start with a fictitious statement, then proceed to argue that statement. Goebbels made many Nazi funded films before there was a holocaust. So, your argument is trivial.

  Not at all, but your response is evidence of your extremism. My point is, these acts of propaganda have consequences that lead to results. The hate towards Jews, a consequence of Goebbels activities, resulted in the lil train rides to which you refer.
  
  If it was wrong then, it must be wrong now. Bacile, funded by Jews now, is doing nothing different than that done by Goebbels and the Nazis back then, before the result of the train rides. Bacile is looking for a result. He is spewing hatred. You are an active participant in that hate.

  I may or may not see this movie if it becomes available but feel that all movies about the devil fall into one of four camps… 1) BBC production of Eve and the serpent, 2) “Exorcist,” 3) Twilight Zone type shows, or 4) shows about Satan’s demons doing what they do best – creating destruction and misery such as the faithful Muslims. I don’t know if I’m up to watching another movie about the devil and how he tries to trick humans into willingly giving their souls to him.
  Ishmael sure was pissed off when God turned His back on him and instead blessed Isaiah. IMHO, God keeps the muslim around just in case He needs to punish His people now and then for disobeying His commandments and turning our backs on Him. Both Jews and Christians need to get on our knees, repent, and beg for forgiveness that God will forgive us our evil ways. If Satan rises up and uses his people to destroy us… it’s our fault for having turned our back on the God of Israel. South Korean pastor, Bo Ra Choi has been seen vision of hell for the last several years. She has seen so many people in hell. She saw Prophet Muhammad was suffering in hell. Muhammad was screaming and shouting not to come to hell. The audio sound was recorded in the local church in South Korea during the worship service. She speaks in Korean what she heard from Muhammad. Experiences like this are popping up all over the world just as it was prophesied in the Bible. With all of the people who have died and been brought back to life, and all experiencing either hell or heaven, the debate on whether there’s an afterlife is over.

  Jerk — Goebbels was a state actor, paid by the state to incite hatred of Jews. His colleague Himmler was a state actor, paid by the state to kill Jews and keep the rest of the populace in fear of their lives.
  
  It was not the average German citizen who participated in the rampage known as Kristallnacht. It was the brown shirts (SA) who perpetrated it, essentially as state actors. Most Germans were horrified by it and intimidated by the state actors.
  
  In islam, no state actor is required. Every individual muslim is req to be a jihadi in action or in cash to support those who go fight the infidel. Every individual is called by Mohammad to avenge blasphemy in accordance w/shariah.
  
  The difference betw state actors and individual actors is clear. Gobbels was a state actor called to produce supporting propaganda. This film was produced by a non-state actor to show the flaws in the character of Mohammad, not necessarily to incite to violence. Even so, responsible adults protest peacefully or simply turn away fm what offends them or incites them.
  
  Political speech is only protected when the most offensive speech is protected.

  In no way do I endorse the violence in Lybia or Eygpt, nor do I feel that it is entirely incited by this movie, but what I think we have forgotten in this discussion is, while the directors and producers of this film have every right to their Freedom of Speech, they are also responsible for their Speech. They knew before making this film that it’s very topic is blasphemy in Islam, and that it could incite violence. They knew that any American over in the Middle East could be the target of any incitement their movie would cause. Their actions and then subsequent lack of taking any responsibility for them should make American who believes in the Freedom of Religion and Freedom of Speech cringe. We are better than this, America! Be responsible for your actions and words.

Now, who was telling the truth about the people they were condemning is up for debate, but the question I have is why are you attacking the producer and not the attackers? Inciting hate is not a crime…in fact, Freedom of Speech is based on the idea that you can be offensive! It’s my right to be offended or not, but I certainly don’t have the right to become violent about it. By that same logic, anyone that writes or produces anything that condemns Christians that’s “insulting” should be blamed if a Christian does something evil to a non-christian? So when Bill Maher produces, “Religiosity,” which is full of lies and hatred towards all kinds of religion, then I, as a believer, am now free to go tear down his door and kill his family for it? And it would be Bill Maher’s fault for inciting the violence, not mine for being the idiot for actually physically harming people for because of his opinions?!   We have made repeated efforts to improve relations with these groups but that fact is Christianity is evil in the Muslim’s eyes, period. And these muslim groups are determined to wipe out Christians (and Jews). Islam and Mohomo state that there is only one single god and consider the belief in Jesus Christ as God is blasphemy and punishable by death.

  This film is NOT the cause of these riots, the film has been around a long time and 99% of the people in the countries that are rioting do not have internet access and have never seen it. It is brought out as an excuse to riot on September 11 and used by Radical Imams to stir up American hatred to the point that these people would attack Americans and the American Embasy’s. This film did not cause these riots if the film had never been made there would have still been riots on the 11th anniversary of September 11. Something else would have been the excuse. Obama needs to take a look in the mirror if he wants to find someone who is greatly to blame for this mess. He is weak, his policy is weak, he brought us to the point of financial catastrophe with $16 trillion in debt and these radical Imams know that there is little the US can do to prevent this even if Obama wanted to.

  Just a quick comment on the posters who have posted quotes from the Koran. One cannot understand the Koran unless one is famliar with the principle of abrogation. Passages that come later, chronologically, in the Koran abrogate those that appear earlier, wherever they appear to conflict. This is made more complicated by the fact that the Koran is not written in chronological order, but rather in order of the size of the suras, or chapters. When placed in proper chronological order, the passages that show respect and tolerance for Christians and Jews appear early in Muhammed’s life, while he was attempting to get these peoples to follow him. After both Christians and Jews rejected Muhammad’s authenticity as a prophet, he turned on them, including all of the critical statements and calls for attacking Jews and Christians, which all appear later in time, and therefore, abrogate the earlier, friendlier passages.

Let’s look past the fact that this was clearly satirical for a moment. Your comparing portraying all Jews as evil to justify evil being done to them to portraying Mohammed as insane to provoke Muslims, who the producers see as evil, into perpetrating evil.
  
  I’m sorry, but from where I’m standing the Muslims did far more damage to themselves by reacting the way they did than this video could ever do. I can’t blame them for taking offense but riots and murder aren’t exactly the way to win my sympathy. Peaceful condemnation of the film would have been acceptable and not unlike some radical Christians’ condemnation of Harry Potter. Personally, I think the rioters actually prove the film’s thesis as true.

  huh? we make fun of muslims all the time. Look at any prominent atheist and you will find all kinds of anti-muslim things. For example, PZ Myers nailed several catholic hosts to several pages of the quran and threw the whole thing in the garbage along with coffee grounds and a banana peel and publicized it on his blog. The death threats from both sides were casually laughed off. Don’t worry guys, plenty of ridicule to go around. Personally, I prefer to make fun of the muslims over the christians because you get more of a rise out of them :)

Looking back at the Christian crusades, and the actions in the Middle East, I can’t even argue with you. You’re right. But… (I can’t speak for Islam, I’ll let them defend their own actions) Christians are responsible for so much good in this world too. Christ didn’t commission people to kill. People have that in their hearts naturally. There are many of us that fight human urges and try to live for God daily. Charity and compassion are key to our core. I have “questioned everything”, and I got my answer. Personally for me, my answer is Christ. That’s what I chose, and if you think I’m stupid, I can live with that. :)

  @ cab goat: clicking on the link isn’t even required if one steps back and looks at the wars objectively. Religion was not the cause, it was only the excuse to get the people to go along. Just like the civil war wasn’t about slavery. Wars are always about land, power, or money. Any other ’cause’ is justification for improving PR for one side or the other.   The important thing to note about this is that the movie which is probably an accurate depiction came out months ago. The murder of Steven and 4 others is another attack on the West and on non-Muslims. I have a strong suspicion this was somehow orchestrated by Obummer and his goons to drag us into another war around election time to try garner support and increase his ever declining popularity. Of course, if you disagree with the political point of view in the film, the “enraged” Muslims must simply create a counter-film of their own. I don’t see why burning things, rioting, and killing is an acceptable way of reacting to these people. It simply shows how uncivilized they are and how they will kill anyone who disagrees with their religious view. I am so glad I live in America where differing views and religions are protected by law…..By the way, why wasn’t our diplomat armed to the teeth? If I were a diplomat in the Middle East I’d be carrying at least two personal handguns at all times.

  1,400 years of nearly complete success proves the the mechanical process of Jihad is not stupid. It has brought down empire after empire and has destroyed culture after culture in a bid for ascendancy over all the planet. The only non-violnet way to stop Jihad on American soil, or any non-muslim soil, is to 1) outlaw Islam, 2) close all the mosques, and 3) deport the muslims.

  Mike’s got it right. Plus, Islam, in its normative form, must be discredited and marginalized, just like Nazism and Japanese Imperialism was after WWII. Like those systems, Islam will always have its followers, but to survive, the West must isolate them and make sure they live in fear and secrecy, lest they be deported or jailed. This will, as per sharia law, disuade Muslims from pushing jihad, since the chance of success is remote. When success looks possible, as it does today, Islam requires the faithful Muslim to actively participate in jihad, in one form or another.
