US Ambassador Christopher Stevens Killed During Embassy Violence In Libya

U.S. Ambassador to Libya, Christopher Stevens, and three staffers have been killed during an outbreak of violence at the American embassy complex, the White House and State Department have confirmed.

Mr. StevensΒ has a ten-year history of working in the region and was appointed to his post in Libya in May of this year after successfully working with the rebels during the conflict that removed Col. Gadhafi from power. Stevens’ State Department bio reads:

John Christopher Stevens, a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, served asΒ Special Representative to the Libyan Transitional National CouncilΒ from March 2011 to November 2011.Β  Prior to this role, he was the Director of theΒ Office of Multilateral Nuclear and Security Affairs.

“Chris was a courageous and exemplary representative of the United States,” President Obama said in a statement. “Throughout the Libyan revolution, he selflessly served our country and the Libyan people at our mission in Benghazi. As Ambassador in Tripoli, he has supported Libya’s transition to democracy. His legacy will endure wherever human beings reach for liberty and justice. I am profoundly grateful for his service to my Administration, and deeply saddened by this loss.”

The news was first reported by Libyan officials who told outlets such as Reuters that the deaths occurred “when gunmen fired rockets at them.”

CNN anchors cited an unnamed source in Benghazi who claims to have witnessed rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) being fired into the complex last night. The source believed the Americans were fleeing the embassy attack when their car was hit by one of the RPGs.

Al Jazeera News reports that Ambassador Stevens has died of “smoke inhalation,” although details are still emerging:

According t the Associated Press, Stevens was killed Tuesday night when he and a group of embassy employees went to the consulate to try to evacuate staff as the building came under attack by a mob [with] guns and rocket propelled grenades. The three Libyan officials who confirmed the deaths were deputy interior minister for eastern Libya Wanis al-Sharaf; Benghazi security chief Abdel-Basit Haroun; and Benghazi city council and security official Ahmed Bousinia.

It’s believed the attacks were a result of an anti-Muhammed movie in the United States sparked the outrage. The attack on the Benghazi consulate took place as hundreds of protesters in neighboring Egypt scaled the walls of the U.S. Embassy in Cairo and tore down and replaced the American flag with a black Islamic banner.

Before Tuesday, five U.S. ambassadors had been killed in the line of duty, the last being Adolph Dubs in Afghanistan in 1979, according to the State Department historian’s office.

You can read the statements by President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton on the attack and the ambassador’s death, below:

OBAMA:

I strongly condemn the outrageous attack on our diplomatic facility in Benghazi, which took the lives of four Americans, including Ambassador Chris Stevens. Right now, the American people have the families of those we lost in our thoughts and prayers. They exemplified America’s commitment to freedom, justice, and partnership with nations and people around the globe, and stand in stark contrast to those who callously took their lives.

I have directed my Administration to provide all necessary resources to support the security of our personnel in Libya, and to increase security at our diplomatic posts around the globe. While the United States rejects efforts to denigrate the religious beliefs of others, we must all unequivocally oppose the kind of senseless violence that took the lives of these public servants.

On a personal note, Chris was a courageous and exemplary representative of the United States. Throughout the Libyan revolution, he selflessly served our country and the Libyan people at our mission in Benghazi. As Ambassador in Tripoli, he has supported Libya’s transition to democracy. His legacy will endure wherever human beings reach for liberty and justice. I am profoundly grateful for his service to my Administration, and deeply saddened by this loss.

The brave Americans we lost represent the extraordinary service and sacrifices that our civilians make every day around the globe. As we stand united with their families, let us now redouble our own efforts to carry their work forward.

CLINTON:

It is with profound sadness that I share the news of the death of four American personnel in Benghazi, Libya, yesterday. Among them were United States Ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens and Foreign Service Information Management Officer Sean Smith. We are still making next of kin notifications for the other two individuals. Our hearts go out to all their families and colleagues.

A 21-year veteran of the Foreign Service, Ambassador Stevens died last night from injuries he sustained in the attack on our office in Benghazi.

I had the privilege of swearing in Chris for his post in Libya only a few months ago. He spoke eloquently about his passion for service, for diplomacy and for the Libyan people. This assignment was only the latest in his more than two decades of dedication to advancing closer ties with the people of the Middle East and North Africa, which began as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Morocco. As the conflict in Libya unfolded, Chris was one of the first Americans on the ground in Benghazi. He risked his own life to lend the Libyan people a helping hand to build the foundation for a new, free nation. He spent every day since helping to finish the work that he started. Chris was committed to advancing America’s values and interests, even when that meant putting himself in danger.

Sean Smith was a husband and a father of two, who joined the Department ten years ago. Like Chris, Sean was one of our best. Prior to arriving in Benghazi, he served in Baghdad, Pretoria, Montreal and most recently The Hague.

All the Americans we lost in yesterday’s attacks made the ultimate sacrifice. We condemn this vicious and violent attack that took their lives, which they had committed to helping the Libyan people reach for a better future.

America’s diplomats and development experts stand on the front lines every day for our country. We are honored by the service of each and every one of them.

This is a breaking story. Updates will be added. The Associated Press contributed to this report.

These areas have been historically identified as soverign territory of the country being represented. This is an attack on American soil just as if it was here at home. This is an ACT OF WAR and must be treated as such. The Traitor in the White House will not have the balls to stand up to this and once more we will be seen by this radical bunch as weak and unable to defend ourselves. Wake up people before you are executed for not becoming a Muslim or for daring to have a different point of view.

Act of war? Yep. But who started it?

We have now conducted drone strikes in at least 6 countries, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Yemen, Iraq, Libya, and now Somalia. So have we declared war on all of those countries? If so, then isn’t the Libyan response a retaliatory attack to our declaration of war?

      @Tommy,

I’m fully aware of that. Absolutely. “these people” were and are Al Qaeda. Who did you think we were getting into bed with? We put our enemy in charge of a country for Pete’s sake. Did we really expect them to be nice? In fact haven’t we declared war on Al Qaeda? So if we are at war with them don’t you think they’d attack us? I have plenty of critical thinking skills. Our state department doesn’t. Neither do people who expect Al Qaeda to follow diplomatic laws after we put them in charge while at war with them.

It can be seen as an act of war, but also as an attack by a mob wthout government sanction – and that is the potential exit door for the administration. It depends on how the Libyan government re-acts. If they move to decisively punish the perpertrators, which I doubt, then the US should react on a diplomatic level. If not, then a hardline response is required.

In any event, Libya, and Islam, should receive a clear message that the principle of free speech is inviolate.

Unfortunately, Mr Obama’s amateurish bumbling has emboldened civilisation’s enemies. This is now a time for some skillful, competent, and resolute leadership.

What Mr Obama does next will be very revealing

I haven’t seen the film which caused this but there is enough anti Christian and anti Jewish materiel floating around arab countries which should make us attack their embassys. We don’t because Americans, Europeans and others are CIVILIZED people. These Islamist radicals are argueably the most uncivilized people in the world.

But WHY did Obama pick Al Qaeda to support in Libya while “fighting” them elsewhere? Why was Gahdafi so bad that Al Qaeda is preferable to him? This didn’t just happen because we decided to fund a revolution.

This is because Gahdafi was building and African monetary union that was gold backed and meant to control the distribution of African natural resources on the open market by not selling in dollars. Hence the US can’t print money without massive inflation. We picked Al Qaeda to run a country RATHER than to be honest with our own citizens and to be fiscally responsible.

Always follow the money. Obama is a fascist @$$clown but we didn’t create Libya because we dig al qaeda…we did it to keep the great robbery going.

Don’t worry American’s Obozo has got this..He has already apologized repeatedly (on the hush hush Red phone) for the film. He understands that Al Qaeda in Libya had to take the US Ambassador and 4 others in the name of the Elihgh or Abdullah Mulllauhalalll. He (Obozo) is sorry, and he feel’s he got an A+ in the foreign policy dept. for evacuating Egypt (4 billion a year taker) embassy and just letting Al Qaeda take our Flag and Shred it and replace it with the Flag of Al Qaeda. We saved American lives by allowing Al Qaeda to take over our embassy on 911/12.

Don’t worry though, the private sector is doing fine, because Obozo’s federal gov’t is going to purchase a billion Bibles and have a mass burning again to placate to Al Qaeda in Egypt and Libya.

Roth has an excellent point. Our president is using drones to assassinate people in other countries. Whether or not these people deserve it is secondary to the fact that that is an act of war as well. Our president is eroding our standing overseas and is inviting these kinds of attacks on our people.

He shows is disrespect for the sovereignty of other nations, inviting disrespect of ours.
He assassinates people (including US citizens) but says violence isn’t the answer for others.
And when attacks do come, he apologizes that others (and not himself) have offended them.

There was no need to wage war on Libya. “We” acted like thugs for our European allies and their oil supplies. leading from behind started as a “no fly zone” enforcement and within 48 hrs ground targets were being struck. For all intents we helped arm Al Qaeda elements as they took over Libyan military caches to bolster the over throw of Gaddafi. For over a decade Gaddafi was toothless not ruthless. He had lost control over the western parts of Libya. Now Islamic radicals, by virtue of our help are now emboldened enough to turn on our embassies. And no one saw this coming?

Repeat slowly the Marine Hymn… when you get to the words “from the shores of Tripoli” ask yourself why those words. What is the reference about?

Ask yourself why President Jefferson has a Koran? Ask yourself why our Congress had the Koran printed for public distribution that contained a warning message?

For those who know this story, do these events in Libya and Egypt seem like karma all over again?

So ROTHBARD_IN_CLEVE rejoices in the death of his fellow Americans as they seemingly got what they deserved because we are an evil country that should beg the muslim’s forgivness and bring our troops home.

Sorry folks, I’m not suffering fools lightly today. I can not watch one of my countrymen’s bodies paraded around town and then listen to some freaking loser who is sitting in the safety of his own home, protected by the very military he wants to complain about. When he should be on his knees thanking God for the freedom he has to post his slanderous tin-foil hat conspiracies provided to him by the sacrifice of better men.

Rush is now reporting that Mitt Romney is being accused of playing politics by speaking out. Obama has said that we are not leaving. Hillary is defending Libyans for taking Christoper to the “hospital”. Aren’t we just the luckiest nation having Hillary speak for us? And she wanted to lead us? Of course, Obama still bows to the Arabs. And blames someones else. Business as usual. And Romney’s comments were the only presidential comment I have heard in 4 years. Hell, yes, they attacked us. We need to stand with Romney.

@Rothbardian Since when did we declare war with them? They say that it is the movie 2016, isn’t it and they do not like it. Glenn warned us about the Arab spring how many years ago? This is so disheartening and I feel sick. They kill our representatives in our embassy and we don’t stand up and scream we are not going to take this anymore. At least it is not Bush’s fault, it is now Romney’s. And yes I have been around a loooong time and these are the meanest people I can remember. @Squid,

Who’s rejoicing? That’s something you’ve cooked up. It’s horrific and shameful and those people are animals. BUT, you’re being naive if you think they all woke up one day and started hating the US. And they don’t hate us because we are free. They hate us because for 30 years we gave them Mubarak who tortured people to death and his police state rounded people up. THEN we went on TV and talked about freedom for all. THEN we bomb six different countries and kill civilians in the process.

Seriously man, we aren’t freaking victims here. This is the game we chose to play. We set out to nationbuild. We got in bed with terrible dictators. We blow people up without due process and declaration of war and sometimes those are women and children. THEN we cast ourselves as the good guys. Then we give money to Al Qaeda to overthrow a dictator because he was a threat to the Fed’s printing press. Good Lord man, step outside of the initial anger and look at the chessboard we’ve created. If you don’t think that what we’ve done doesn’t make enemies then you aren’t too clever.

I think that your disappointment in Mr Obama is causing you to go a bit over the top.

Western nations, and even some of our enemies, still have the greatest respect for your nation. They know what the problems are, and who is taking little effective action to solve them.

Don’t be too distressed; America is still respected and admired, and is still the acknowledged leader of the free world.

A change of leadership will do wonders for your nation and, with your improving fortunes, the rest of us will also benefit. I believe that it is likely that Mr Obama will be summarily ejected from office by the electorate, and the usual diplomatic congratulaions to the new president will be particularly sincere and heartfelt.

Especially how he handled the Iranian hostage crisis. Our people were released the day Regan took office partly because of Carter but mostly because the Iranians knew Regan was going to do something massive about it. This time, we have Owebowma the spineless ready to apologize. And I do not think the ******* are interested in taking hostages this time. It is way past time to smoke some camels and their lovers.

      I don’t know, but I don’t doubt you.

I do know that in at least one country, they did not like Carter preaching human rights & running down their country. They lived under military rule, they brought in press clippings to school of things like a journalist who had died in police custody. They were upset about it. The journalist had a closed casket funeral even though his wife wanted an open casket funeral. These were the kids of rich people. They wanted their to fix their own country without preachy Carter telling them how.

The 1st 2 or 3 years Carter ran down the military. If you look at military spending Carter, Clinton, & Obama have run down the military. Under Obama it might being going up because of the wars but the underlying structure is being hollowed out.

I have respect. I read his biography. I do not doubt that the ambassador voted Democrat. But I read his resume & it was solid for college education to law school to several years as a trade lawyer & so on.

I respect someone, who is a trade lawyer for several years who enters the Foreign service of the State Department & works his/her way up more, than a campaign-bundler who gets appointed ambassador.

There is a need for people who understand trade law when we get in to economic disputes with other countries.

I can see arguments bother ways for appointments. I could maker an argument for why campaign bundlers should get appointed ambassador It is along the line of mandarins running things & all having the same mindset (like the NYT press room) & basically frustrating & negating a president’s policies & waiting him out.

I am hitting & denigrating the trolls not the ambassador. They were out there when it was the flag being burnt int the early stories. The Troll Dora Glasberg comes to mind. I believe the trolls & the people they elect are to blame for the ambassador’s death. They enable people like Obama & Carter

Obama & Carter make us a paper tiger. It sets the tone. It makes us weak,. This is the result.

We strike while the iron is hot.

Otherwise they stay low come at a day later & start right back.

Maybe if our Commander in Chief would attend his Intelligence briefings, speak with Israel, and stop apologizing we wouldn’t be in this situation.

    This Administration = MAJOR FAIL

I wouldn’t be surprised if all this is a result of an orchestration by Obama and his corrupt administration to drag us into more war for political gain during this election. Many have predicted this is precisely what Obama would do to try to win the election. He has nothing else to show for, so he starts a war.

Oh don’t worry Patriotic Americans, because Obozo has already apologized to Al Qaeda for our insensitivity on a singe you tube film (Danish) from an American Israeli.

We should be mad at the Tea Party or the leftist filmmaker, but don’t get mad about more blood on the hands of Al Qaeda. Might as well go ahead and apologize to the New Black Panthers for their voter intimidation and say thank you may we have some more. This is flat out ridiculous and laughable foreign policy. I would say this is odd, but this is nothing more than PC.BS. And Obozo has a degree in PC BS.

The Arab Spring saw Revolutions in Egypt, Libya, Tunisia & Yemen. What is the scorecard?

Egypt & Tunisia has hard line Islamicist governments. Libya is looking like crap now too.

Obama pulled a Jimmy Carter on Egypt. He said we didn’t care about Mubarak like Cater didn’t care about The Shah.

Obama owns this. It is his October surprise. There will be more. They are all nails in the coffins of his & the Demo____ reelection chances.

First Egypt, now Libya. Remember how the Marxist in Chief lauded the demonstrators, then allowed our military to be unconstitutionally used to support the Al Qaeda/Muslim Brotherhood takeover? Of course you do! Can you still believe that the presidential race is reportedly “tight”?

“Well, Senator Warner…. how’s that Arab Spring working out for you now? You once wrote me about how “inspiring” it was for you with all those Egyptians demanding “democracy” when I raised my concerns to you and that fool in the WH was supporting it. Do you still find it inspiring having our flag ripped down in our embassy, a black flag raised in its place while radical islamists jump around yelling “God is great”?

Tunisia is not working out so hot either.

Obama had direct involvement in Libya.

Obama’s involvement in Egypt was limited to saying we do not support Mubarak (greenlighting his overthrow) & to sending Code Pink & other leftist groups over to Egypt to effect his overthrow.

Senator (traitor) Warner is an embarrassment to Virginia and the US of America. He has not represented “the people of Viriginia” for his full term as senator and I hope he retires to New York City or Chicago where he belongs.

I have had several occasions to interface with Marine guards at several of our embassies. The only reasons that there weren’t many casualties amongst the thugs that invaded sovereign U.S. territory is because they were ordered not to open fire on them and not from a lack and the means to defend the embassy. Don’t blame the Marines, blame the State Department wonks who gave them their orders.

A US Ambassador is the senior US leader in a country. The USMC security guards take orders from him/her. If told to stand down, the Marines will do so.

Probably, there is a slim chance I see him sending in US Troops to ‘capture’ those responsible for trial and such. Most likely the god-king of DC will do nothing but, as you stated, apologize to these killers for our being there to offend them.

And so the next round of the Caliphate Arising commences around the Middle East no thanks to the Obama administration. We should immediately pull our embassy out of Libya/Egypt, cut off all funding for them and freeze or seize all of the respective governments assest.

Also fire Obama this November, this is one more consequense of the Arab Spring whirlwind we are due to harvest that he has sewn for the nation.

I saw we unilaterally disarm by deploying our nuclear arsenal and make this region the parking lot they deserve to be. God Bless America, I pray we survive the next 4 months. This POS needs to be arrested and tried for Treason! Waiting to see if the GOP has anything to say. Congress should declare this an act of WAR, even if our supposed President won’t. Anyone still considering voting for this AH is either mentally challenged or the enemy within. Lookout America, Civil War is coming….be prepared!
