Obama, Romney Trade Jabs Over Anti-American, Islamist Furor in the Middle East

WASHINGTON (TheBlaze/AP) — Even in the midst of tragedy, partisan politics rages. Republican Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama are trading tough words over the handling of foreign attacks on U.S. diplomatic missions in the Middle East, injecting foreign policy into a presidential campaign that has focused on a sour economy.

Romney accused the Obama administration of showing weakness in the attack that killed the U.S. ambassador to Libya, Chris Stevens, and three American members of his staff. Romney blasted the initial statement from the U.S. Embassy in Cairo as disgraceful and “akin to apology,” adding later, “It’s never too early for the United States government to condemn attacks on Americans and to defend our values.”

However, the embassy statement came before the protesters had breached the embassy’s walls and was not an apology but an affirmation of the American policy of religious tolerance and respect. A statement by Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton minutes before Romney’s was released condemned the attack in Libya and said there was no justification for such violent acts.

Obama made a somber statement in the Rose Garden condemning the attacks and announcing plans to deploy additional Marines at diplomatic posts overseas. In an interview with CBS News’ “60 Minutes” later in the day, Obama said the episode showed Romney’s penchant for having “a tendency to shoot first and aim later.”

“It appears that Gov. Romney didn’t have his facts right,” Obama said. That night, during a rally in Las Vegas, the president said he had a message for the rest of the world: “No act of terror will dim the light of the values that we proudly shine on the rest of the world, and no act of violence will shake the resolve of the United States of America.”

The four diplomats were killed Tuesday as protesters overran and burned the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya. In a separate incident, the American Embassy in Cairo was breached by protesters, and the nation’s flag was ripped down, although no deaths were reported. And on Thursday, protesters stormed the U.S. Embassy compound in Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, tearing down and burning the U.S. flag.

U.S. officials are investigating whether the attack in Libya was a terrorist strike planned to mark the 11th anniversary of the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Initial reports were that both the Libya and Egypt events had been motivated by anger over an anti-Muslim film made in the United States.

Obama made separate calls Tuesday evening to the presidents of Libya and Egypt, urging them to work with the U.S. to ensure the safety of diplomatic personnel. Obama and Libyan President Mohamed Magariaf vowed to work together to identify the Benghazi attackers and “bring them to justice,” the White House said in a press release.

Obama told Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi “he rejects efforts to denigrate Islam, but underscored that there is never any justification for violence against innocents and acts that endanger American personnel and facilities,” the White House said.

The Obama and Romney exchange came with less than eight weeks remaining in the tight presidential race, a campaign that has remained close for months and is being fiercely waged in fewer than 10 battleground states.

Economic concerns could play a more prominent role Thursday, when Romney appears at a rally in the Virginia suburbs outside Washington, D.C., and Obama holds an event in Colorado’s Denver suburbs. Obama carried both states in 2008, but they remain up for grabs and heavily contested by both campaigns.

The Federal Reserve was expected to announce Thursday whether it plans to take new steps to jumpstart the U.S. economy. Many anticipate that the Fed will release a third round of bond purchases aimed at easing long-term interest rates and spurring borrowing and spending.

The economy has been the top issue throughout the race, with recent surveys showing Romney with a narrow advantage over the president when it comes to plans for reducing the nation’s unemployment rate of 8.1 percent. On foreign policy, Obama has held an edge on which candidate is better suited to handle international affairs.

Romney, on Wednesday, defended his decision to issue his criticism Tuesday night, at a time it was not yet known that Stevens had been killed. Asked if he would have done so had he known about the deaths, he said, “I’m not going to take hypotheticals about what would have been known and so forth.”

Some Republicans with experience in national security matters questioned the GOP candidate’s handling of the events and top Republican leaders in Congress did not echo Romney’s remarks. Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky said Obama “correctly tightened the security overseas.” Asked about Romney’s remarks, he declined to answer and walked toward his office in the Capitol.

Romney’s account didn’t mesh completely with events in Cairo.

The statement that he referred to as akin to apology was issued by the embassy in Cairo at midday Tuesday at a time the staff was aware of still-peaceful demonstrations in the area nearby. The mob breached the compound’s walls and tried to burn a U.S. flag about four or five hours later.

The embassy statement condemned “the continuing efforts by misguided individuals to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims – as we condemn efforts to offend believers of all religions,” and noted that religious freedom is a cornerstone of American democracy.

Romney added that the White House later “distanced itself” from the statement, saying it hadn’t been cleared by senior officials in Washington. “That reflects the mixed signals they’re sending to the world,” he said.

Obama said in the “60 Minutes” interview that the embassy was trying to “cool the situation down” and it was released “from folks on the ground who are potentially in danger.”

“My tendency is to cut folks a little bit of slack when they’re in that circumstance, rather than try to question their judgment from the comfort of a campaign office,” Obama said.

He added that as president, “it’s important for you to make sure that the statements you make are backed up by the facts, and that you’ve thought through the ramifications before you make them.”

I can imagine the day after the election when Obama wins. Romney will be to blame and all of this cheerleading will turn to contempt for nominating this lying fraud of a man. Romney has been on both sides of every single issue over the past ten years. How can anyone trust this guy? This is what happens when the establishment candidate trumps the genuine article.

Romney was the individual who made a completely false accusation on Tuesday night in the attempt to score political points. The PRESIDENT answered a question regarding Romney idiotic response and complete naivete regarding the middle east and foreign policy in general. But I bet Romney can give you good advice regarding which foreign banks to hide you money in and which ones won’t provide information to the US in terms of taxes owed.

Sorry, I said this earlier at another thread, but Romney did the right thing and the feckless n Chief had to hide behind his skirt (that would be Hillary for the clueless) to say the right thing then he followed up with a near robotic prose of undetermined urgency that we will get those that did this. Sad; really sad. :)

Notice how this (& any other matter which comes back to homicidal Islamic antics) continuously identifies that most Muslims (foreign & domestic) are:
    1) Ruled by emotion.
    2) Allowed to act on their emotions as they see fit.
    3) And not to be held to the same standard as the rest of the world.

Won’t it be ironic if Obama’s election bid is foiled not by the economy, but by all the Islamic zealots who won’t shut up, settle down & let Big O get on with the business of saving the planet?

What’s REALLY stale on this forum (& in the media in general) is the knee-jerk BS that if you point out the one way street of expectations clamored for by Muslims, their apologists & enablers. YOU’RE the hater. Kiddies, most of us don’t hate because someone is a Muslim or political/ideological opposite. An overwhelming number of Americans just don’t care for bullies.
Me (like I HOPE most grownups), I’m not ruled by my emotions, so spare my the tiresome “Hater!” label. Like a lot of Americans (R or D) I’m not particularly religious. So spare the Christian fascist remarks.
Can we at some point call a violent, ignorant spade a violent, igorant spade? I don’t care if people wanna practice Islam. Do so in peace. I do care if ANY zealot (Muslim, Christian or secular) believes I gotta comply or else.
At some point, we have to recognize the Islamic world is like the great American junky: It does not want to be saved, only left alone (& allowed to do as it pleases).

This is an example of Washington ineptness at it’s finest. A total misread of the events taking place in Libya especially. The lack or intelligence and the misreading of the situation as it “escalated” throughout the day cost 4 people their lives. For some reason politicians keep catering to the radical and violent concept known as Islam. First of all it is recognized as a religion of which it does not meet the definition of. If Methodist wanted Methodist running the country in a Methodist way with the whole country being of Methodist culture and the supreme leader being Methodist with everyone wearing Methodist attire and the schools and “laws” being Methodist in nature….would you consider Methodism a religion…of course not. If 50% of the Methodist were disenfranchised and not even allowed to dress appropriately for hot weather or even seen in public without an immediate relative beside them, would you like it…of course not. If at every turn a Methodist person was blowing up every Tom, Dick and Harry who offended them and ridiculed everyone else who wasn’t Methodist, would you like that…of course not. If a Methodist wanted a particular group exterminated violently because they hate them so vehemently would you like Methodist…of course not.

Romney should never have gone along with the blatant power grab at the convention with Boehner ignoring the peoples voice. This is going to continue to hurt him to November. It hurt his vote with me and many other grassroots Tea Party voters. With as many as us that have decided to vote for Romney along with the Ron Paul supporters, he will likely lose. We are all voting Gary Johnson. Both the Democrats and the Republicans showed their true colors at the conventions, ignoring the people and doing what they wanted against the voices. The embassy statement condemned “the continuing efforts by misguided individuals to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims – as we condemn efforts to offend believers of all religions,” and noted that religious freedom is a cornerstone of American democracy.

      Soy…
It also appears to assert (and I agree) that way too many Muslims are zealots ruled by emotion. And so we must protect the all-mighty feelings of the modern noble savage (which I don’t agree with). Screw your feelings; screw my feelings. So apparently having an opinion on Islam (other than a positive one) one is “misguided”. Oh, and this honoring of the all-mighty feeling also applies to all other religions. So you can’t really have a stance against, oh, Christianity for example. Or you’ll be condemned. To what? Eh, bit vague on that detail.
So, yeah, it’s actually worse than an apology. It’s a call to limit free speech based on religious emotion. Gee, a simple “We’re sorry” may not have been LESS draconian and duplicitious in nature.
Free speech? Well, that’s just too dangerous and unwelcome. Oops.

SOY, Think about this. In past presidential campaigns involving third party candidates the media has given them plenty of coverage. They gladly promoted Ross Perot to help elect, then re-elect Clinton. They even showed something of a minor rally behind Ralph Nader which could only hurt the Dems. But, when it comes to Johnson, there is hardly a peep from the press. When they don’t see him as having enough weight that they can toss around to beat up on Romney, that speaks volumes as to his standing in the public’s eye. In my opinion, Ron Paul may have carried slightly more weight. So, let’s face it, Johnson will accomplish diddly squat in this race, and I have to admit that my vote for Romney will be more of a vote just to oust 0bama. I already know in my heart that Romney should he become president will disappoint me more than once while in office. What I have read about Johnson, and from his very own site, I already know that I do not care for his views other than fiscal, just like RP. Go ahead and vote your personal conviction, but I intend to get that even bigger fool out of the White House. Then, we can look toward more healing for this nation.

if these two political parties represent good versus evil, then perhaps you should question who is fighting for who

Romney was trying to score cheap political points and if you are honest with yourself, you will agree. I dont know why Romney is doing this all of a sudden.

Even people like John Sununu, McCain, Condi, etc are not happy about this

if you are honest with yourself…..you will realize that the “empty chair” should have been doing what Romney did and not out on the campaign trial raising money.

Romney wasn’t trying to score cheap political points. He was just doing what a true American leader is suppose to do. Stand tall and proud and support and defend our way of life. These radicals need to be put down or else it will continue to spread just like it already has.

Ain’t it a b!tch the Islamicists don’t give two lukewarm craps about the election for the POTUS?
Someone should tell them to settle down and play nice ’til at least after November!
Then again, that would be even more fruitless than herding cats.
Big O can’t use this drama to his advantage, so thru your version of the Marquess of Queensberry rules, neither can Romney? I don’t believe you understand the game of politics very well.
Full disclosure: I am NOT a Romney supporter.

Here’s an idea, instead of sending more troops over there why don’t we just bring them all home!

Romney acted more like a president in one day than obama has in 3.5 years.
maybe obama needs to hold a beer summit with the muslim brotherhood.

Boy Wonder is in waaaaay over his head. He should have stuck with community organizing as this job is exceedingly above his pay grade and competence level.
