Obama Speaks Out on Egypt: ‘I Don’t Think That We Would Consider Them an Ally, But We Don’t Consider Them an Enemy’

President Barack Obama made some curious comments on Wednesday about the current relationship between the United States and Egypt. In a sit-down with the Spanish-language channel Telemundo, he responded to the violent anti-American attacks taking place in the Middle East. He also delved into his views on whether Egypt is still a U.S. ally — and his answer may surprise you.

When asked by a reporter if the U.S. still considers the Middle Eastern nation a key supporter, Obama attempted to stay neutral in his assessment. But his response, regardless, paints a picture of a strained relationship that was not-so-long-ago in a much better standing.

“I don’t think that we would consider them an ally, but we don’t consider them an enemy,” the president proclaimed.

This assessment is starkly different than the one that former Vice President Dick Cheney gave back in 2011. During a speech to conservatives, he discussed former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, who was, at the time, being urged to resign.

“He’s been a good friend and ally of the United States,” Cheney said of Mubarak.

Considering the ongoing fallout and political transformation following the Arab Spring last year, the loss of Egypt as a U.S. ally in a region that is anything but friendly to Western interests is noteworthy. After all, Mubarak supported the U.S. for decades.

Additionally, during the Telemundo interview, Obama discussed the notion that the U.S. is in a waiting and assessment period, as the country waits to see what Egypt’s response to the U.S. embassy attack will be. The president also reiterated his belief that the nation’s leaders need to protect U.S. interests there and that he’s hopeful that the Egyptian government, led by President Mohammed Morsi, will respond in a manner that is favorable to the American government.

According to the Associated Press, Morsi did come out today against the attacks. The leader has vowed to prevent other atrocities on foreign embassies in Cairo and claimed that the Egyptian people reject such “unlawful acts.” During a conversation with Obama, Morsi said that he condemned “in the clearest terms” the Libyan attack in Benghazi that led to the deaths of four Americans as well.

  how much money do we spend every year on foreign embassies? My understanding is that their only function is to help American citizens living and traveling abroad. If that is the case, maybe we should shut down the embassies and direct Americans to the local american military base.

  Maybe BHO needs to read ALL the tenets of the Moslem Brotherhood before opening his mouth. Their agenda is:
  
  1) Completely destroy Israel.
  2) Convert the whole world to Islam (By whatever means necessary) with Cairo as the Capitol of the New Moslem Caliphate.
  
  The agenda includes the destruction of the United States. BHO is so clueless as to what the goals of the Brotherhood are it is pathetic.   ASHESTOASHES, Okay, I think you missed my point about Jefferson simply being an Ambassador. SOY gives me the feeling that his aspect of the Constitution is pull everybody back from all of these countries and insert our collective heads in the sand. Apparently, the Ron Paul/Gary Johnson way of doing business in the world.
  You are right that comparing an ambassador position in eighteenth century France is far different from our embassies in today’s middle east. As far as the Muslim’s desire to conquer and rule the earth, we did after all have an Embassy in Moscow during the Cold War. I think they had a similar idea regarding the world. Standing at the East German, and Czechoslovakian borders for the better part of the ’80s decade reinforced that fact to me. Embassies and Ambassadors do more than provide good will between nations. They have to keep their fingers on the pulse of those other nations, and I mean that as in the old Agricultural Attache cliche. Hard to do if we have nobody there. Its a dangerous thing at times, but in my humble opinion, I feel that it is a necessity.

  I don’t see the point of having military bases AND embassies in every foreign country. Seems like a lot of redundancy. Either close a military base or close the embassy – I do not see the need for both in a foreign country.

  White House spokesman Tommy Vietor, Thursday says that the administration is not signaling a change in that status.
  
  “I think folks are reading way too much into this,” Vietor said. “‘Ally’ is a legal term of art. We don’t have a mutual defense treaty with Egypt like we do with our NATO allies. But as the president has said, Egypt is longstanding and close partner of the United States, and we have built on that foundation by supporting Egypt’s transition to democracy and working with the new government.”

  If Biden had been available he would have wanted to know what more he could do to apologize to the godless demons that murder for fun! Obama has never been available except for awards and to hear his name praised by the Hollywood crowd, so it is not outside of normal that he went campaigning as soon as he made these remarklably stupid remarks! He considers the islamists and al qaeda as HIS allies, while Israel and the Jewish people are definitely HIS enemies!   Last month the Canadian Government had ordered the Egypt Embassy in Ottawa to close and oust all their Embassador and other workers out of the country. Canada also closed the Canadian
  Embassy in Egypt and all Canadians there were returned. I do not believe that America under Obama is so dumb to support the Muslim Brotherhood, giving them money so they be able to kick us in the face, sure…they are not your enemy Obama..but they are the enemy of the real Americans, and Obama-you are not. unanswered questions:
What did he talk to the MB about when he met with them in the WH.. did they talk about what was on their IPods?
What was he really doing last night?
When he said ” it was a mistake” was that because it was only intended to be protests and no one was supposed to die?
Can a POTUS.. by executive order.. cancel elections whenever he deems it necessary.. ie in a crisis?
Is this linked to our elections?

I’m listening to Beck right now talk about this very subject. I have to agree with his assessment of 0bama. Lazy and very slow to move on a situation. But, when it comes to the Muslim Brotherhood, he right there Johnny on the spot. I wonder how quickly he can that 1.3 Billion dollar check out to Egypt now?

Why is it that Obama is so quick to help when the situation deals with the Muslim Brotherhood, however, he does nothing when they attack America. Oh wait, he apologizes first….which by the way muslims see as an act of weakness.

Yes, thanks to obama, Egypt is no longer an American ally, of course, obama personally IS an ally of the muslim brotherhood and his comrade Morsi. The violence against Americans that we are seeing in Egypt, Libya, etc. is exactly what obama and Hillary had hoped for – this is what they call “democracy” – this is their “arab spring”.

If we are to survive as a nation, obama must be removed from power – November can’t come soon enough.

  SOY, that was the result of the treaties made with Egypt following the Yom Kippur War. Granted, Egypt has had some rough leaders, but did do what they could to keep the peace. Even to the point that Israelis were vacationing safely in many Egyptian resorts. There were not attacks on Israel by Egypt since ’73 either. Okay, I know that you see no reason to provide them with the funding and military assistance since you wish to retreat, bury your head in the sand and have incestuous relations with your family. Hey, if you support it, you may as well revel in it.

And 3,000 people died on 9/11 and 4 died on 09/11/12 so they are not our enemy, we would not want to hurt their feelings. If the Muslim people are so peaceful when is the “Silent Majority” going to speak out aganist this? I guess they don’t mind being owned by the extremists. Wait a few days and they will speak out with pressure from Obama to say something against this. They should have spoke out on 09/11 when it mattered, now it is just empty words. Egypt is the result of the American policy of supporting oppressive dictators throughout the Middle East. We oppressed the Egyptian people with our support of Hosni Mubarak.

Look, we did the same in Iran, and it took the same path back in 1979 that Egypt is taking today. We have punished a whole lot of people for quite a long time.

Though, what is always forgotten is the plight of the Coptic Christians in Egypt. They’ve literally gone from the frying pan under Mubarak into the fire of the jihadis.
