Report: State Dept. Had ‘Credible Information’ 48 Hours Prior to Libya Consulate Attack But Failed to Act

Senior diplomatic sources say the U.S. State Department had credible information, 48 hours prior to the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya and the embassy in Cairo, that American locations may be targeted, however, no warnings were issued, no “lock down” orders given, The Independent reports.

On Tuesday, a mob of radical Islamists stormed the consulate in Benghazi, killing U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans in a fiery assault. Officials say the murders of the four men were likely the result of “a serious and continuing security breach,” the report states.

U.S. officials now believe the Libya attack was premeditated, despite initial reports that an anti-Muslim YouTube clip sparked spontaneous riots throughout the Middle East. However, Stevens’ return to Libya was intended to be confidential as well as his location in Benghazi, where he and his staff were murdered, raising additional security concerns for American assets in the country.

The attack was an organized two-part operation by heavily armed militants that included a precisely timed raid on the supposedly secret safe house just as Libyan and U.S. security forces were arriving to rescue evacuated consulate staff, a senior Libyan security official said on Thursday.

Wanis el-Sharef, eastern Libya’s deputy interior minister, said the attacks Tuesday night were suspected to have been timed to mark the 9/11 anniversary, with the militants using the film protest by Libyan civilians to mask their action.

To make the crisis in Libya worse, “sensitive documents” have reportedly gone missing from the U.S. consulate in Benghazi as well as a secret location of a “safe house” in the city, where the consulate staff had retreated to but were bombarded with a mortar attack. Other “safe houses” in the region are no longer considered safe.

The Independent has the exclusive on this story:

Some of the missing papers from the consulate are said to list names of Libyans who are working with Americans, putting them potentially at risk from extremist groups, while some of the other documents are said to relate to oil contracts.

According to senior diplomatic sources, the US State Department had credible information 48 hours before mobs charged the consulate in Benghazi, and the embassy in Cairo, that American missions may be targeted, but no warnings were given for diplomats to go on high alert and “lockdown”, under which movement is severely restricted.

Mr Stevens had been on a visit to Germany, Austria and Sweden and had just returned to Libya when the Benghazi trip took place with the US embassy’s security staff deciding that the trip could be undertaken safely.

Eight Americans, some from the military, were wounded in the attack which claimed the lives of Mr Stevens, Sean Smith, an information officer, and two US Marines. All staff from Benghazi have now been moved to the capital, Tripoli, and those whose work is deemed to be non-essential may be flown out of Libya.

There is growing belief that the attack was in revenge for the killing in a drone strike in Pakistan of Mohammed Hassan Qaed, an al-Qa’ida operative who was, as his nom-de-guerre Abu Yahya al-Libi suggests, from Libya, and timed for the anniversary of the 11 September attacks.

Eastern Libya’s deputy interior minister, Wanis el-Sharef, said a mob first stormed the consulate Tuesday night and then, hours later, raided a safe house in the compound just as U.S. and Libyan security arrived to evacuate the staff. That suggested, el-Sharef said, that infiltrators within the security forces may have tipped off the militants to the safe house’s location.

Killed in the attack were U.S. Ambassador Stevens, information management officer Sean Smith, private security guard Glen Doherty and one other American who has yet to be identified.

El-Sharef said four people were arrested at their homes Thursday in relation to the attack, but he refused to give any further details. He said it was too early to say if the suspects belonged to a particular group or what their motive was. Libya’s new prime minister, Mustafa Abu-Shakour, said authorities were looking for more suspects.

Additionally, U.S. embassies across the world ramped up security Thursday as Muslims reportedly angry over an anti-Islam film stormed the U.S. mission in Yemen and clashed with police near the American mission in Cairo.

In Yemen, hundreds of protesters chanting “Death to America!” stormed the U.S. Embassy compound in the capital, Sanaa, and burned the American flag. Yemen’s president, Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, quickly apologized to the U.S. for the attack and vowed track down the culprits.

  in the morning on 9/11 I was watching some of the ceremonies and many mentions of heightened security because terrorists like to use dates as future terrorism. Now since we all know or at least have been told this and Egypt and Lybia both just this year had violent revolutions, they have been killing Christians and our press is saying now there was no warning. This is just another big lie formed between Obama and the media. We are not that stupid . The people of msnbc should be ashamed. Not a mention of murder or terrorism and if you didn’t know better you would think Romney did the attacks.

  Neidermeyer, there are times when I feel the same way. But then I stop and recognize that it’s really a small price to pay, considering that I get tons of quality content, a sounding board to discuss with like-minded Americans (and a few resident nit-wits, a/k/a trolls), and I get it all for absolutely zero dollars. And yet, the small but hard-working staff have to get paid.
  
  So, I just try to count my blessings that enough revenue is gained by such a small exercise in frustration to allow me to still be able to find truth in media without having to actively pay for it.
  
  All of that being said, my browser has felt the pain of the pop-ups/clickthroughs as well.

  Yes, the pop ups are somewhat annoying. But then I think about it and the news articles are free. You gotta pay the bills somehow. Now I am on a high speed connection, but my machine is old old old. It has DDR memory. I installed Win7, not as good as XP, it uses less resources though. And for a browser, I have Opera. It is a very light weight browser that is designed for dial up connections. It has tremendously helped my serfing habits. Hope this helps your slow connection. I know it helped my resources. At least try Opera if you cant afford Win7.

Was posted yesterday that our fake president does not attend daily meetings where this type of information is discussed. So who’s in charge? If NoBama took credit for UBL, then he takes responsibility for this. This guy has to go. There is sooo much fodder out there and no one is using it. Romney, Rove, etc, should be all over items like this. And use the Eastwood empty chair.

It was horrible and without YOUTUBE never would have seen the light of day. When I looked at YOUTUBE for it yesterday, only 34,000 people had seen it, now maybe a lot more, I don’t care. THE POINT IS… WE believe in freedom of speech. I could not believe that witch Clinton (she looks worse every time I see her) was on TV once again condemning the movie. I don’t recall hearing her condemn the video clip featuring Daniel Pearl. SHUT UP HILLARY. GO BACK and try to do your JOB…part of which has to be making sure all of our EMBASSY’S know what day it is and have ample protection. THE ONLY thing that impresses other people is HONESTY and STRENGTH of CHARACTER. not you groveling, conniving, weaseling , hand-wringing little power mongers who deflate like balloon . More disconcerting to me is if our top military brass fails to stand tall on the actions taken by this admin. This admin will do anything to stay in power, and the oaths of office “to defend the Consitution of the US against all enemies, foreign and domestic” has to be taken seriously by our congress, senate and military brass.   I just amazes me. Obama knows it wasn’t the video. Clinton knows it wasn’t the video. The ambassador in Egypt knows it wasn’t the video. The Egyptian President knows it wasn’t the video. The militia that attacked the US consulate knows it wasn’t the video. The American people know it wasn’t the video. All of them know the attacks were about 9/11.
  
  The only people who think it is the video was the reason are all the Muslim sheep stirred up by their handlers.
  
  Why didn’t we call out the ME countries that we know all the attacks were about 9/11. Instead, we are playing this childish game trying to convince these 6th century savages that we disavow the video and we are really, really, really sorry.

So, apparently, obama wanted to use the attack on the embassy for political gain by allowing it to occur and then swooping in to solve the crisis – perhaps it went a little farther than he had planned, BUT, one thing is for sure – it has backfired on him – BIG TIME and now, HE must be held responsible for the deaths of four Americans. This is obama’s fault – he owns it, and he must be held accountable!

I’ve said something along the line of this story a couple of times here. Had already heard from several sources that we were warned. And, that this has been the only 9-11 anniversary where security in the mid east embassies was not beefed up. The people who perished were throw aways to this administration. Just have not figured out their end game yet.

why would hillarry want to warn her own people. they shouldve been on high alert or even told to go to safe place. but leave it to the white castle and the valkryes not to protect thier own people, next time maybe give the marines real bullets. stupid civilians trying to fight a military force with rocket launchers, ar 15s with blanks.

If oBUMMER weasel sent me a billion and a half every year, I would not burn or kill anyone. Shoot, I would’nt burn or kill anyone for half that much. I believe Obama was busy with Pimp with a Limp and Vegas Showgirls. Hillary was just trying to be anywhere but near Obama, and Biden had a biker chick on his lap (she still is trying to delouse). So, come on people, they cant be responsible to catch everything, look, we don’t know all the facts, but we do know that the Embassies acted stupidly.

  The stories that I have found mostly do refer to him being sodomized and was asphyxiated during that trauma. If he had been hanged even recently when seen in those photos, the rope marks would have been visible. Hanging is a violent way to die.

  I agree with you.Beck was right on today. He thinks we are being set up and I believe it as well. God Bless all of the families involved and the fifty Marines sent to Libya ot get the remains of those who were killed. I am so angry that they knew ahead of time and did not send in more troops, they did not allow the Marines to have live ammo, sent no warnings, and that they did NOTHING to stop this. This man was sodimized strangled and then hanged. and our president makes an applogy to the Muslims? Beck said that he believed Iran and even Russia was behind this. I agree. I do not think that the photo at the dems convention with the Russian warship in the background was a mistake either. The fact that Russia is negotiating with Cuba to have military bases there, the Russian sub that was spotted close to our country, and so many other things that have happened seem very suspicious. This was planned to happen on 9/11 and I would bet many more will follow. The EPA sending a message with Che on it. This administration is communist. I have never wanted to say this before but there are to many facts to argue against it any more. The truth is the Muslims are angry at BHO campaigning and using Osama Bin Ladens death as a major accomplishment. The progressives want to use this movie to cover their own butts. This will become far worse in the weeks ahead and I fear that it will be used to shut our country down and for BHO to take the final drastic steps needed to ensure his control.
