See Christian Pastors Rapping (Yes, Literally) to Encourage Thousands to Participate in ‘Back to Church Sunday’

Whether you’re a regular churchgoer, someone who has fallen away from attendance — or an individual who has never, in your life, been to a worship service, “National Back to Church Sunday” will have something to offer you. The initiative, aimed at encouraging Americans to attend local houses of worship, will involve thousands of churches across America. Pastors are so fired up for the national effort that they’ve even put together a rap video to help advertise it (see below).

On September 16, 2012, the campaign will culminate, as churches have been inviting citizens for months to give church a try this upcoming Sunday. The initiative, unique in its own regard, relies upon Christians to inspire and invite neighbors, friends and community members to go to church with them.

In 2011, more than 7,600 houses of worship participated, according to the “National Back to Church Sunday” web site. And at a time when so many are questioning faith’s role in the nation and examining whether churches are dwindling in their influence, the end result of the campaign was an average 25 percent increase in attendance on the designated day.

On the official web site for the event, the following reasons are given for why Christians — and churches — should get involved:

  • It’s a catalyst – Pastors give a call to action; communities have a rallying point
  • It’s simple – All churches, one date, one clear message – come back to church!
  • It’s personal – It empowers members  to make a personal invitation to church.
  • It works – On average churches saw a 26% increase in attendance on Back to Church Sunday.
  • It’s grassroots – It’s powered by the people, not a program
  • It empowers – People are energized by an inspiring event and easy-to-use invitations
  • It’s free – Churches don’t have to buy anything or use any of our resources – it’s simply a great idea that works by just doing it!

While the goal for 2012 was 10,000 churches, the group has already attracted 12,752 churches. Getting involved is easy, as the program provides a five-step plan that provides tips and resources for individuals and houses of worship, alike. There’s even a useful church search tool that helps connect people to local congregations.

The grassroots campaign takes on some viral tenets as well, with comical videos and a robust social media presence. Take, for instance, the pastoral rap video that encourages citizens to participate (viewed on YouTube almost 139,000 times):

And then there are some comical videos depicting awkward and unpalatable methods of inviting un-churched peoples to worship. Here’s one (for the entire list of videos, go here):

The campaign has attracted some high-profile attention, as well. Bethany Hamilton, the 20-year-old who lost her arm in a shark attack when she was only 13, has joined in to help support the initiative. In a press release announcing her support, she stressed the importance of growing up as part of a church. The experience, she said, brought her encouraging friends who have helped her live a Christian life.

“My church is a place where I can develop friendships with others that will encourage me in my walk with Christ,” Hamilton explained. “I hope you can find a church too. National Back to Church Sunday is a great time to start looking for a church that suits you.”

      Unlike taxes, giving to the collection plate is voluntary. You do not have to give if you don’t want to.
      For those that do want to give, it is their right to give their money how they please…same as for you…so stop hating.

It is for the poor and needy of the body of Christ. Judas is their example, not Jesus. I pray they will see the error of their ways before it is too late.

    And while worship focuses on the Sovereign Lord, and His mercy and love in the midst of a very wicked nation that has lifted up the massacre of millions of innocent, fostered pedophiles and rampant pornography, thrown Him out of the schools, I think it sad that we have to “remind” or “beg” people to get back into church. While I love America with all my heart, she needs to repent before He judges us harshly…

      This ISN’T about coming to WORSHIP GOD, it’s about filling pews to collect money. Most have replaced God, deifying his son. They do not get “THOU SHALT HAVE NO OTHER GODS BEFORE ME” and don’t start with the trinity stuff – that began in the 4th century – three hundred years after the resurrection and ascension of Jesus to stand at the RIGHT HAND of the Father. What part of “In my Father’s House” don’t you understand.

      But then churches are mostly social hedonistic gathering places – send in the clowns to dance and rap for their god. It’s all about the money in your pocket – and hardly about even “salvation” while they lead you down the crooked path to a very warm place they will preach at you about.

      They can’t teach the word or expound the truth because they don’t know it. Wisdom and understanding come from God. Example: the Apostles. The Lord personally chose and taught those men as an example to all other wannabe ministers, priests, preachers, …..etc. God chooses His own preachers!! He teaches them the understanding of his word and he teaches them how he operates in our personal lives. This kind of teaching takes a special relationship with the Lord that most people don’t have. Example: Moses, the prophets of OT, apostles….etc. Are they better Christians than us, NO. They are simply the ones that God had chosen and taught his ways so they could teach others. So my point to all this is this: These so-called preachers, priests, pastors, and whatnot of all these churches are NOT chosen by God to stand in the pulpit. If you will notice in the NT that whole cities and mountainsides of people would flock to the the Lord and the Apostles ministries. They didn’t have to worry about attendance. They were hunted down by the people. Why? Because of the power of God manifested through the gifts of the Holy Ghost. Those gifts are only given to true believers with the right calling and relationship with God. It’s what separates the truth from fiction. I’ve heard some on here say that they have turned away from God because they haven’t seen anything to make them believe in him….I rest my case about these false teachers.

      Please, please, Church in America – enough with the gimmicks. The gimmicks just turn seekers off that much more. The people in America who are already wary of any kind of religion can smell phoniness a mile away.

      Here in New England, nearly everyone is jaded to “religion” and just about any brand of Christianity. No one here wants catchy music, theater, lights, cameras, or any other nonsense. They want to see you put your money where your mouth is and live out your faith, and even then they’re suspicious. It can literally take years to get to know anyone here to the point where you can even be open about your faith. It’s pretty evident here that even the slightest iota of fake Christianity does a hundred fold more damage than the good that it was intended to accomplish.

      I think this is probably also true in the rest of America, at least among seekers and the younger generations. Be who you say you are. Live out your life in obedient faith, be open about your own faults, show people genuine love with no strings attached, and don’t get in people’s faces. The Holy Spirit is the only One who can change anyone’s heart, so start praying. No amount of hoopla, 10 step evangelism magic, latest cure all book, or so called Christian culture will change anything. It’s all a heap of nothing – Christ alone is the answer. Until we realize this, the Church in America will continue its decline.

      How about WORSHIPING God. How anyone can sit week after week and be “sermonized” at and pay someone to do it is beyond me. They call it a worship service – it’s entertainment to fill the collection plate. And every knee shall bow and every voice proclaim that Jesus is the Son of God – not God – his is the kingdom of this earth – King of Kings and Lord of Lords – ONE world government – a theocracy that will Worship God his Father because Jesus paid the price.

    Why beg someone to come to your church (notice: with a small c) because you do not have anything to offer? Former Church goers, and the young, are hungry for The Truth (Bible Doctrine). So, find a Church, and not a church, where there is a Pastor-Teacher presenting The Truth. Now, I must say, there are vary few Churches that can supply you with The Truth. I know there is one in every major southern city (over 100-thousand population) that is an off-shoot of Berachah CHURCH, Houston, TX.

      These churches are so far gone that they will do anything to get attendance. Only God has the power to draw people by the convicting power of the Spirit. If Rap, Rock, and every other form of entertainment is being used by these churches, then I have to ask this question, “WHERE IS GOD IN ALL THIS?” There is a mass exodus in all of these churches because the people know in their spirit that they are not being fed the truth and it has turned them off. When the real deal shows up they will return.

      In Jesus’ prophecy about his ‘presence’ and of the conclusion of the system of things, he mentioned this; 45 “Who really is the faithful and discreet slave whom his master appointed over his domestics, to give them their food at the proper time?46Happy is that slave if his master on arriving finds him doing so.47Truly I say to ​YOU, He will appoint him over all his belongings. Matthew 24:45-47

      Since it is obvious that the world is in it’s last days, does this indicate that the spiritual revival has already taken place?

      @whitefang: We are in the last days for sure. The bible shows me that God is just and merciful and I fully believe that. If the Lord returned today, how many people would actually be ready to go? These churches are in shambles and many people are just plain lost. Even a bunch in these wrecked churches. Here’s how I believe it to be: God will pour out one last mighty revival just like in the early church to prepare his people to escape the wrath to come. Those that are left to face the tribulation will have truly begged for it, because they will be showed God’s supernatural power and mercy before it comes upon them. I looked up the Azusa Street revival, and read up on the things that went on back then. It was prophesied back then that a greater revival than that one would come in about 100 years, and it would go into all the world. Guess what…we are in that exact time today. I believe that prophesy because I can look around and see the desperate need for it. The Lord always shows up in the darkest hour to deliver his people.

      The Watchtower Bible and Tract Society is another corrupt religious organization.

      “We all need help to understand the Bible, and we cannot find the Scriptural guidance we need outside the ‘faithful and discreet slave’ organization,” (Watchtower, Feb. 15, 1981, p. 19).

      The only Teacher, Counselor and Help for me is the Holy Spirit.

      The WT is like the Roman Catholic Church, and other corrupt churches, that believe that it is the one true church or religion on earth. Blasphemers, I’d say.

      “Only this organization functions for Jehovah’s purpose and to his praise. To it alone God’s Sacred Word, the Bible, is not a sealed book.” (Watchtower, July 1, 1973, p. 402).

      The WT believes that without them, one can’t truly be saved or approved by God.

      “We need to obey the faithful and discreet slave to have Jehovah’s approval.” Watchtower 2011 Jul 15 p.24 Simplified English Edition

      The WT also believes that without them, the Bible can not be understood accurately.

      “[A mature christian] does not advocate or insist on personal opinions or harbor private ideas when it comes to Bible understanding. Rather, he has complete confidence in the truth as it is revealed by Jehovah God through his Son, Jesus Christ, and “the faithful and discreet slave.” Watchtower 2001 Aug 1 p.14

      I see you know what some Watchtowers say and and your selections are taken out of context but you are correct. Do you find it strange we would have such confidence in the identity of the faithful and discreet slave? The slave has to be real, it cannot be a falsehood.

      What is your opinion, based on scriptural evidence, as to who that slave is? You tell me, I will listen.

      The revival of true Christian worship is connected to the emergence and the identity of the faithful and discreet slave. If we can identify who meets the qualifications of being that slave, then we can have confidence in their spiritual direction.

      The evidence points to that revival as having already taken place.

      “Out of context”? Those are pretty straight forward comments, regardless of their context. Heck, I studied since I was a kid with the JWs. NONE of it is out of context.

      Matthew 24:45-47 is not referring to an organization or formal assembly of men, at all, especially not to some earthly incorporated body of men. It’s referring to the individual man, not to an artificial entity or specific group of people.

      “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.” 2 Corinthians 5:10

      Your quotes are out of context in that there is surrounding reasoning’s and scriptures that lead the reader to logical conclusions. However the quotes you selected are indeed accurate and I have no problem with them.

    This isn’t about God or church if it was true leaders would be going to church on the Sabbath as Jesus did, not as the world counsel of church’s do (Vatican owned one world church).
    Eric Abel of Outreach, Inc. “Most people in America have been to church, yet only 20 percent are regular attenders,” he explains. “Statistics show that every week, we lost about 150,000 people in churches. People leave for a variety of reasons — many don’t believe in organized religion or they’re just too busy with life. But one of the main reasons [they offer] is that Christians are judgmental and hypocritical sometimes of people who don’t fit in.”
    This is a salesman gimmick. Blame and victimize (sound familiar?).
    National campaign for Babylon and her sisters to swallow up more victims. Their concern is money not you. (NOTICE!), all the reasons fall on the unattended (guilt) not on the lies taught in the pulpit. Lies and deception drove them away and now they try to draw you back with guilt.
    Go to the Bible and pray for the truth. Worship on the sabbath, the true day of worship. Jesus will find you where you are and the cost is His not yours.

      Although I wish I could teach a Sabbath lesson and many other lessons but, I cannot. I’m just happy that you all at least have a Bible ( it was not always that way, many believers in the scripture lost their lives for others to read for themselves the word of God) . I pray that you study for yourselves what the truth of scripture is and the Spirit of the Father is in you, concerning His Son Jesus. The world has had thousands of years to deceive and disguise the truth of God. The blind will lead the blind into the pit.       the renewed (yes renewed not new) covenant is to the house of Israel and the House of Judah, so you can see poor gentile you are right you have no Sabbath, you need to engraft into the true assembly of Father YHVH (god’s name for the pagans) which is Isreal read chapter 2 of Ephesians

      Salvation was given to Abraham and his seed (Jesus Christ) Genesis 22:16-18 (obedience through faith in his heavenly Fathers gift of salvation (Jesus Christ his only son)) This gift is not a right for men, but an inheritance of faith (blessing). As the Father and Jesus blesses the Sabbath as the day of worship so it is with salvation through the inheritance of faith in Gods commands. We are, as you said,”engraft into the true assembly of Father”. The Father blesses us through those He chooses (Jesus) and things He chooses (Sabbath) not who or what man chooses. Thank you for your blessing. I like the assembly of the Father.

      “Moses of old time hath in every city them that preach him, being read in the synagogues every sabbath day.” Acts 15:21

      Romans 14:1-8 is speaking about fasting days. The key words here are in verse five, “One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind.” This passage, and its surrounding context, does not mention the Sabbath, or any holy Day, or any day declared and commanded to be observed by the Lord. The only days one had an option to “esteem”, as a personal preference and choice, where those concerning fasting and praying. Daniel, the Apostles, the Judean and Israelite Kings, Isaiah, and other prophets, regarded these fasting and praying days as they saw fit or deemed necessary, under their own discretion. Even during Jesus’ time on earth, some of the Jews complained that the disciples weren’t fasting right along with them. Fasting and praying is something we do to get close to God; not to be seen as religious among others, or more pious than others. It’s an expression of our personal relationship with God, not men.

      I am humbled by the knowledge and understanding of scripture in attendance throughout this blog, yours included. Thank you for your added comment on special days also called sabbath that were not necessarily on the seventh day (Sabbath). This is where the confusion usually loses people. There were two laws that were kept in the most holy place. The ten commandments inside the ark of the covenant and the laws of Moses that were placed beside the ark. These were the laws of the nation . Which included laws pertaining to Sabbaths in general. Jesus talks about the laws of the Jews which burdened the people instead of freeing them to keep the Sabbath in the spirit of the law. ( a great example is our constitution that has been burdened by stacks and stacks of laws) His coming replaced the Sanctuary service, not the ten commandments. The commandments reveal the character of God. If people don’t like the commandments how can they think they can live with Gods character for eternity? If the Sabbath is void, then so are all the others. I should be able to steal or covet my neighbors wife. The law connects us with Gods Character without the law we are lawless which is sin. Jesus was also under the law (the ten commandments) were He to break one of these laws (including the Sabbath) He would not have be accepted as a spotless lamb before the Father. In reflecting the character of God we must live in the spirit of the lamb who was perfect under the law.

    I believe preachers would do well to study the great awakening. Prior to Jonathan Edwards (not the warped Dem Senator, but the preacher in the 1700s) giving his sermon Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God, he got down on his knees, and for three days he did not eat, he did not sleep, he did not drink. For three days he prayed, and that sparked a revival that moved up and down the east coast.

    There were no gimmicks, no light shows, no rock music, no filth from the world. He preached directly from the Bible, he preached on the Holiness of God, and he spent considerable time in prayer before doing so

    What a “novel” idea, to bad it appears to be more of a ‘novelty’. Did ‘Weird Al’ produce this? Maybe if more “christians” would act Christ-like, then maybe those who aren’t christian, or haven’t been to church in a while would be interested in going. My wife and I went to a local church for years( I was even on the board), then we noticed that a lot of the people were talking about other people behind their backs, and for a while we joined in, we had to ask ourselves if this is what Jesus would expect of us. Needless to say we are looking for a new church. Actions speak louder than words, and if that’s what a non-christian sees a “christian” doing, then you really can’t blame them for not believing, or others for not wanting to join any church!

    It’s amazing how blind Pastor’s can be…especialy the judgemental ones. You guys are attacking rap and the very creative way that the Pastors in that video are reaching out!! There’s some real wisdom lacking here. Rap or the music is not the problem and never has been. It’s the individual heart behind it and the intention there of. I am involved with many Rap artist who do a way better job of evangelizing using the gift of lyrical expression based on God’s word. If an unsaved person comes to church through the enticement of rap, hears the word of God and get saved..do you believe God will reject him. Heck NO!! Don’t allow cultural prejudice to stain your godly wisdom. Rap consist of words and if its the Word of God it will not return void..regardless of how we view it! So let God’s word reach a culture thats clearly being lost and let the church repent of its owns internal sins then we will see God move!! Remember …If My people..!!

      The spirit of Christ should be present and exaulted when people come together to worship. Because Christ has “left the buildings”, pastors have to create gimmicks to try to get people to come to church so they can get their paychecks. It is all a bunch of nonsence and Christ has nothing to do with it anyhow. Christ has only been manifesting himself to the body of Christ. He has left organized religion because organized religion has continually rejected truth and since God is only obligated to honor his word, he is not obligated to honor powerless programs and gimmicks. A true anointed man of God would not partake in foolishness. I didn’t even bother to watch the video because it is all the same. Hirelings that have to figure out way to entertains the masses. Of course, people who enjoy the empty social aspects of gathering together on Sundays will probably love it because it is the “world”. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. Sunday mornings are not the “assemblying of the saints”. They are gatherings programmed by man whereby they twist the word of God and preach tithing to pass the plate so that hireling is sure to get his paycheck. True men of God never retire and do not receive retirement benefits. It is all of the world and God is not in it.

    I am very saddened by all the negativity that this issue is getting. So what if the four Christian Leaders used “rap” to try to get people’s attention. They are not hurting anyone. Perhaps, just perhaps they influence just ONE PERSON to attend church… then they have SUCCEEDED in their MISSION.

    I hear so many people complaining that as a Country we have taken “GOD, and pushed him away”…. so now here is a chance to try to INVITE GOD BACK INTO OUR LIVES….. and there is so much hostility because of how it’s being done????

    I am very confused. I am a Catholic, and enjoy the rituals of the Catholic Church. No, they do not “rap” there, and it’s very full of rituals, but for me, it’s what I like.

    I really don’t “get moved” by the large Christian Speakers and their audiences (and please, I am NOT TRYING TO OFFEND ANYONE…..) If those Christian Services WORK for you, than YAY!!! It’s the place for you to go. I thought it was very creative to show that the Preacher was in “Chucks”, and used more of a modern theme by showing that his sermon is on an I-PAD. Again, it’s not MY style…but if it EFFECTS even ONE PERSON… then HOORAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    We NEED GOD back into our Country… and well, I am just amazed at how negative so many people’s comments are about this. Rather than understanding the message that “WHY NOT INVITE SOMEONE TO CHURCH???”

    Let’s get the word out there. God is for EVERYONE.

      Jesus never used the filth of the world to bring in sinners. He preached on sin, and gave them the gospel, proceeded with much prayer. He did not travel with a group of jugglers, jesters, and attention getters. He just gave them the gospel.

All your silly rituals and all the gimics will never replace the truth of God. I know you don’t want to offend anyone but the name of Jesus is a rock of offense and a stumbling block to the wicked. You may want to consider the word rather than feel good ritual.

    You don’t put lipstick and mascara on Gods Word, this is NOT how God wants to be preached and evangelized, IMHO. Rap is a vessel for praising the ways of man and glorifying him. I have a feeling God is not pleased by it in the first place:.

    “do not inquire about their gods, saying, ‘How did these nations serve their gods?—that I also may do the same.”

    Mathew 7:6
    “Do not give dogs what is holy, and do not throw your pearls before pigs, lest they trample them underfoot and turn to attack you.”

    Teach them the TRUE Word of God, from the Bible. Show them how the problems they live with are all solved by God’s Holy Law. If they receive it? Great! Praise YHVH! However if they do not:

    Mark 6:11

    “And if any place will not receive you and they will not listen to you, when you leave, shake off the dust that is on your feet as a testimony against them.”

    You know I have served the Lord for over thirty years and these pathetic attempts to fill the seats are nothing more than gimics. Who has the best coffee or who has the best lights or entertainment. Then they hear some dead dry platitudes or boring message they can’t even relate to. How about preaching the whole council of God and not just telling people what they want to hear. Yes the gospel is good news for those who truly have it but you need to call your people and this nation to repentance for we are truly under the judgement of GOD. If they are not ready for what is about to come upon this nation they will be offended at God and will shake there fist at him. It;s time to stop soft pedaling the gospel and tell the whole truth. Sin all sin needs to be addressed. Tell me pastor are the sinners and unredeemed sitting in your church comfortable or are they being convicted of there secret or open sin. Are you building character in your people or are you building numbers. Here’s a nugget, Numbers do not equal anointing. I know some of you will say as always what are you doing Mr. know it all?       There’s a parallel hip hop culture that doesn’t have the traits you listed. Either way, what’s wrong with trying to draw in some of the younger (and likely lost) crowd in an effort to change their paths? Seems like exactly the type of people you’d want to come into the fold to help change their lives, right?
      I’m an agnostic, so I’m coming from an outside perspective here, but it just seems logical to me.

      I call it rap, and not rap music for a reason. Music is a balance, and is a combination of beat, rhythm, melody,…

      Rap is a beat with lyrics. There is no melody and you cannot hum the melody of rap song, thus it is not actually music. It is a beat with words.

      If you go to your local jail or prison, you will find rap to be the listening choice of the violent offender.

      Actually, I think you are wrong.

      I, too, dislike rap music and the images it brings. I live in Albany, NY where there is a HUGE GANG PROBLEM….and I have no desire to hang out with these people. I think the message the “rap song” was giving, is that WE ARE ALL WELCOME to ANY CHURCH…. We all know that different churches, of different variations, of being Christian ARE DIFFERENT…….

      But the point is, it’s a church and people are worshiping together. It may seem a little kooky…but I found it quite funny to see a Catholic person “rapping”…….. that is not what a Catholic Service is like…but he was right about the “woman who plays the organ”.

      I think they really tried to be creative, and to really encourage and INVITE EVERYONE to ENTER A CHURCH THAT THEY FEEL COMFORTABLE IN. Perhaps it’s not that bad of an idea, with all the violence in the world lately…. why not spend a few hours on Sunday, even just mediating, thinking of some higher power, other than yourself.

      After all it may not help, but it can not hurt.

      @rangerskippy half the new rap out there has singing in it and so does quite a lot of the older stuff. Putting lyrical content aside for the moment I can list 20 rap artists/groups off the top of my head (and I’m not even an aficionado) that rely pretty heavily on melody in the music, if not in the words. Sounds like you’ve given a cursory listen to .0001% of what’s out there and decided that’s all there is.

      Violent rap and hip-hop are nothing more than conditioning. Nasty, brutal misogynistic lyrics over a big ‘bottom end’. That is to say, the lowest frequencies affect us the most. Hear the homies lately in their cars? You can hear the bass three blocks away. (I can’t help but wonder if they’re trying to outdo one another, like two bulls snorting out their message. Those ganstas think they’re so sly with their ‘secret signs’ and messages.) The low bass frequencies can’t even be distinguished by the human ear location-wise. You feel them, yet you can’t tell where they’re coming from. Like evil. You subscribe to it, yet you don’t know why. It’s only conditioning. It can be fought and won.
