KEENE, Texas (TheBlaze/AP) — Police say a North Texas officer followed policy by dragging a 77-year-old woman from her SUV when she refused to provide identification and said she first needed a bathroom.
A review by Keene police found no wrongdoing by Sgt. Gene Geheb who pulled over Lynn Bedford over for driving 66 mph in a 50 mph zone. The Aug. 19 incident captured on police videotape was made public Wednesday.
Geheb several times asked for Bedford’s license. She refused, said she had a bladder infection and needed a restroom.
“Just hurry up; I have to go to the bathroom,” she said.
“Let me see your driver’s license and insurance, please,” the officer ordered.
She refused the officer’s request several times.
“Well you listen to me–,” she began.
“No, I want to see your driver’s license and insurance, please, and then I’ll listen to you,” the officer said.
“I’ll give it to you in a minute,” she shot back.
“No, you give it to me now, or I’m going to take you to jail,” he said.
“Well, go ahead,” the 77-year-old replied.
The officer did exactly that, pulling her out of her car and handcuffing her. Bedford was cited for speeding and failure to provide ID. Chapter 521 of the Texas Transportation code states, motorists are required to carry a valid driver’s license and “display the license on the demand of a magistrate, court officer, or peace officer.”
Further, “a peace officer may stop and detain a person operating a motor vehicle to determine if the person has a driver’s license as required by this section.”
Watch the raw video of the altercation below:
Bedford’s attorney Clay Graham, of Fort Worth, Texas, says the officer overreacted and she deserves an apology.
“The officer is not very interested in listening to what she has to say,” Graham said. “She gets a little frustrated. And then he just overwhelms her. That’s what I see. And then it goes from routine stop to ridiculous stop.”
Police Chief Rocky Alberti says Geheb followed policy when violators don’t provide identification.
“This incident has been reviewed thoroughly by the Keene Police Department and the City of Keene Administration,” Alberti said in a written statement. “All parties have concluded that Sgt. Geheb did not violate any state laws or department policies, and in fact was following department policy in regards to violators not providing identification.”
Did the officer handle the situation appropriately? Let us know what you think by taking our poll:

If we tried the same thought experiment/psychology experiment with 20, 30, 40, 50, & 60 year-olds, whites, blacks, males or females & then tabulate results by gender age, & race.
Then have people discuss the discrepancies.

Sep. 13, 2012 at 9:33pmDriver’s licenses for Citizens who are only using the road for travel and not for commercial business is immoral and against natural law. Not one other creature on this planet has to have a license to travel; and don’t tell me it is because we use cars to get around because most of you complain and piss and moan when you see a bicyclist trying to get to work or the store using “your” roads.

Sep. 13, 2012 at 9:36pmShe was clearly uncooperative. She refused his request several times. He told her he would arrest her and she said to go ahead. When he asked her to get out of the car, she was defiant again and refused. He did what he had to do. I thought he was actually pretty gentle with her all things considered. He pulled her out of the car but he could have slammed her on the ground, wrenched her arms behind her back to cuff her, etc.

Sep. 13, 2012 at 10:31pmSGTB, driving is a privilege that is why it requires a license. You can drive by foot or on bicycle where ever you please with out a drivers license. If you are a passenger in a car you do not have to have your license. The only person required to have a license is the one operating the vehicle. How can you say that a license is like travel papers? Its not. You have a license to show that you passed the state required test and that you are allow to use the privileged of operating a car.

Sep. 13, 2012 at 11:11pmBAH Educate yourself. You can still travel without a license just not in a car. A drivers license is not required to move from one place to another. Its required for the use of a car. Out of date Supreme Court cases do not change that. For all if not most of those there is a more recent case that changed the law. Our laws evolve. So are you telling me some one who has been in multiple accidents because of drinking and driving should be allow on the roads? As to me being a Statist, when I am at home or on my land I would love to be left alone, less taxes all of that. However when I am in public I expect certain laws. Because there are too many idiots roaming around. I do not need the government to protect me from myself, that is my business. But I do believe it should protect me from the rest of the idiots out there. Traffic laws I have no problem with, drivers license I have no problem with as long as I am on a road paid by everyone else I am good with these rules.

Twenty years ago to serve a murder warrant two cops would go with a sledge hammer now days the swat team goes and flash bangs everyone in the house. Cops view themselves as a military more than a service provider. Oh ya watch cops in other countries they’re much more polite than American cops.

Sep. 15, 2012 at 2:19amAs a person with diabetes, I have often feared a situation like this. She should have just let go all over the back seat of his cruiser. This officer should be suspended for such treatment of an innocent woman. She broke a cop funding law, she did not infringe on ANYONE ELSE’s rights. Poor old woman was probably doing everything she could to hold it in, and had let her foot get a little too heavy trying to get to a restroom, and bam he stops her. She already feeling incredible bladder pressure that nobody who has never had diabetes understands which makes her already very agitated and tells the officer of her infection at the time of being stopped. Now, he could have quickly said, “Ok Mam, I understand your predicament” I am going to follow you to a restroom, and then afterwards we can deal with your traffic violation.
No, instead he is going to show her who’s boss. He calls her Lady in an aggressive, angry tone and threatens to jail her for not immediately giving him her drivers license and registration. His treatment and the overly aggressive treatment of most of the police I come into contact with today is 1/2 the reason these guys have such bad responses from people.
America has changed. It’s no longer “the land of the free and home of the brave”. Has not been for a while I’m afraid. We’ve become the “land of the a million tyrants”. The line Mel Gibson used in the Patriot has come true. Why did we trade 1 tyrant 4000 miles away for a mil

Driving is a privilage for 14th amendment citizens and sheeple. It is an unalienable right of the people. Roads are payed for mainly by gas taxes. I pay them, you pay them. Where do you think you get the authority, either individualy or collectively, to tell a soveriegn,( i.e. one of the people, me) that I need to possess a licence and identify myself to another human being(badge or no) without being charged, under penalty of purjury, for a crime by another soveriegn?

I don’t remember if i had my seat belt on when he passed or not, but i usually put it on when i get to a major road if i had not put it on when i got in the car….but anyways a mile or two down the road the cop jumps in behind me and flashes his lights, so i pulled into a shopping center so i didnt back up traffic…He asked me if i knew why he pulled me over, and i said i didnt have a clue…and he said when i was pulling out of the neighborhood i didn’t not have my seat belt on. But i did have it on at this point and didnt remember if i did or didn’t have it on when i was in the neighborhood, so i didnt say anything and gave a “maybe i did maybe i didn’t look”….so he wanted to interrogate me as to why i was there and where i was going.,….i did not get a ticket on this one (the most recent)
Another one was a tag light out….and another was my blinker was blinking too fast so there must be something wrong with one of my other blinkers, so he wanted to check …
No tickets on any of them…..but tickets are not my complaint…my complaint is i no longer feel free to drive without cops searching for a reason to harass me. I have only been pulled over only once in 19 years, and three times this year alone…something has changed for the worse….

They are so screwed up demanding their rights on every single little issue, suing anyone and everyone that insults their personal feelings or somehow offends their sensibilities. I don’t know, I’m just tired of it all, the whining and complaining, the lawlessness and breakdown of decent moral character. The acceptance of the idea that everyone and anyone can do whatever they please and to hell with everybody else, shoving their gross sewer perversions down everyone’s throat. Remember this: Nobody gets off in this town, trains don’t even slow down. My sweethearts done married and gone, got on a bus to San Antone, nobody gets off in this town. Or I’m on the road again, making music with my friends, can’t wait to get on the road again. Is there anyone at all who remembers Detour, there’s a muddy road ahead, detour, paid no mind to what it said, detour. Oh, these bitter things I find, should have read that detour sign. Application here: Detour, there’s a cop just ahead, detour. Oh these bitter things I find, should have read that detour sign. And top of the morning to you all. Much ado about not a lot. Population Keene, Texas 6,000 plus.

Sep. 13, 2012 at 9:50pmI agree, but keep in mind she’s 77yo. He could have broken her hip when he pulled her out of the car and onto the pavement. Given her age, I would have waited for backup to remove her from the vehicle firmly but safely. I know it takes a while longer, but, geez, show some patience, officer. If you are too angry to stop yourself from causing serious bodily harm to a cranky old (lying) woman who does not pose a physical threat, then IMO you did use excessive force.

Point #2: This was an old woman. Was it necessary to use that sort of force? But Marines can’t use loaded weapons guarding the embassy against real threats…

What? do you think older people shouldnt have to obey the law? can i break the law, and when i get busted say “i gotta peepee” and get off? would i be able to do the same if i had a bladder infection? you get pulled over, give him the damn licence THEN explain. he prob would have let her go with a warning. but you are wrong no matter how you look at it. either she and him have to follow the letter of the law, OR if you think the officer had discresion the ladies bad attitude and failure to comply with a simple request would have made anyone not want to cut her any slack.

He didn’t have to do that the way he did. He is an employee of the citizens, not an authority to the citizens. Sep. 13, 2012 at 9:13pmSo if a town has a drug problem & everyone knows that per city policy the cops will never pull someone over for speeding until the get the drug problem solved, then we all know that everyone will drive under the speed limit & there will not be an increase in traffic fatalities.
Yup makes sense to me.
Either that or you have to spend some time dealing with each type of problem

Sep. 13, 2012 at 8:43pmI don’t give a damn how old or young you are, the law is the law. You want to be a smartazz and not do what an officer asks, even politely and numerous times, you get what you deserve. All the probable liberal had to do was show her ID and he may have even let her go. While the Obama’s eat lobster every nite, these officers earn peanuts and have one of the most dangerous jobs there is, mainly because of liberals, thugs, and lowlife welfare recipients.

Sep. 14, 2012 at 12:20amFreeberty, Huh?! The cops provide a service while welfare recipients do what? Sell drugs? Leach and provide no benefit? The most dangerous part of cops job is their most routine… Traffic stops. They risk their lives daily and most would take a bullet for a stranger. How can you call that a thug? For what these officers do they get paid jack. Are there bad cops sure, but those are the only ones we here about. You do not hear in the media about the nice cop that let some one off with a warning or gave a helping hand. Its part of their job they do not require thanks. There are more good than bad cops we just do not hear about them because they are doing hard job with little to no thanks from the public.

Sep. 13, 2012 at 8:42pmI think he did the right thing. This lady figured she was above the law, and he still took it WAY easy on her. I’m a 24yr old male who grew up in TX and if I had acted that way to a TX cop, he would have punched me in the face and kicked me in the balls and I’d be thankful as hell he didn’t gouge my eyes out while he was at it. You DON’T mouth off to a TX cop!! It’s “yes sir”, “no sir”, “here’s my license sir”, and “have a good day, officer”. Nothing about “you listen to me” or “I’ll give it to you in later” or “go ahead and take me to jail”. Unless she was a tourist, she should have known better.

Sep. 13, 2012 at 9:27pmMy grandma was smart enough to know how to act to a cop, and she was classy enough to act classy too, so this kinda thing would never have happened to her. Sep. 13, 2012 at 9:37pmBut Neither1, I know exactly what you’re saying and completely agree with you. When dealing with TX cops, just for good measure, you should probably throw in a “You look very handsome today, sir” and “Can I please shine your boots before you go, sir?”. That’s just the way things are here, and that’s my point: he went WAY easy on her. Most TX cops, especially the ones in the backwoods like Keene, would have just knocked her teeth out with a nightstick, poured sugar in her gas tank and drove off. She’s in TX, she should have known better.

Sep. 13, 2012 at 9:33pmIf this were Mayberry, what the cop would have done, is follow her to a place with a bathroom, and then wait for her and write the ticket while she was peeing. EWhat if she really did have a medical problem, and suffered some injury after being detained. Cmon, a 77 year old woman, is not going to try to out run the Police. He already has her license plate. We need to respect out elders a little bvetter than this, and give them the benefit of the doubt.
