Violence against U.S. Embassy’s in Egypt, Yemen and Libya (four were killed including U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens) has led some countries in the Middle East to petition Google to block the anti-Islam and anti-Muhammed movie trailer posted on YouTube that the rioters claim is the focus of their ire. Some have been petitioning Google to take it down while others, looking toward the future, wonder if Google should change its policies to prevent such events.
Given that the video doesn’t violate any of YouTube’s policies, which is a product owned by Google, the site is refusing to block it completely. But in an unusual move, it did temporarily block access to it in Egypt and Libya on Wednesday. On Thursday, Pakistan’s government decided to follow suit. AFP reports Indonesia has petitioned Google to block the film as well, while Afghanistan’s government has temporarily blocked access to YouTube as a whole.

The trailer, at the time of this posting, has more than 1.4 million hits on YouTube. It has been reposted many times on the site as well. (Image: YouTube screenshot)
“We work hard to create a community everyone can enjoy and which also enables people to express different opinions,” YouTube said in a statement. “This can be a challenge because what’s OK in one country can be offensive elsewhere. This video – which is widely available on the web – is clearly within our guidelines and so will stay on YouTube. However, given the very difficult situation in Libya and Egypt we have temporarily restricted access in both countries. Our hearts are with the families of the people murdered in yesterday’s attack in Libya.”

Muslim anger over perceived Western insults to Islam has exploded several times, most recently in Tuesday's attacks against U.S. diplomatic posts in the Middle East. (Photo: AP/Adel Hana)
Reuters reports Afghanistan blocking the site as a preemptive step to prevent violence within its own country:
“I welcome any decision by the government because it badly affects the minds of young Afghans,” a senior government official told Reuters on condition of anonymity.
Another government official, who also declined to be identified, confirmed the ministry had ordered all Afghan Internet providers to block YouTube’s site.
Fears the video could provoke riots prompted at least one provider to act before the government’s orders were received.
“We have not yet been told, but we blocked YouTube … to avoid the blood of innocents spilling over. All it takes is one Mullah watching that video, and then he’ll preach about it later on, causing chaos”, said Farhad Fazi, the president of Internet provider AFSAT.
With this latest incident, which is actually one of many calling into question Internet freedom, CNET writes that with 72 hours of video being uploaded to YouTube every minute, there are “increased the odds of collisions between free speech and conservative religious sensibilities.” Here are a few other recent instances CNET calls out:
In May, the Pakistani government blocked access to Twitter over potential “blasphemous” caricatures of the prophet Muhammad. Two years earlier, Pakistan temporarily pulled the plug on connections to Facebook after a Seattle cartoonist’s satirical suggestion that Thursday be dubbed “Everybody Draw Mohammed Day.” And then there was the controversy over the cartoons in a Danish newspaper in 2005.
In Saudi Arabia, blogger Hamza Kashghari was arrested in February on blasphemy charges for daring to criticize Islam. Even the Vatican managed to persuade the Italian government to shutter Web sites that allegedly posted blasphemies against God and the Virgin Mary.
Google is now in a difficult situation, John Ribiero for IDG News writes, when it comes to “mak[ing] a choice between Internet freedom and helping keep the peace.”
In light of recent events, some like Michelle Stinson Ross for Search Engine Journal are asking questions like who should decide where the line between free expression and religious tolerance lies? The individual? Or “should service providers like Google amend their user policy in light of this incident?”
So we pose the question to you:

Sep. 13, 2012 at 4:41pmWhile I will defend any Americans right to free speach as affored by our Constitution, I do not agree with or support this mans version of “making a political statement”. The film production was, in my opinion, completely irresponsible, unethical, and immoral. Did this guy really think there would be no consequences from this film? The films full intent was to ridicule and denegrade. Having said that, I don’t believe for a second that the riots were as a result of the film. They are in fact the result of the poor foriegn policy of the current administration that has empowered the more radical elements of Islam.

Sep. 13, 2012 at 11:54pmThe film was an after the fact excuse. The attacks were planned long in advance.
Hint, they took place on 9/11.

Sep. 14, 2012 at 8:12amyes please let’s bow to the 7th century throwbacks.. who feign outrage at a film while mutilating women and children for dressing like westerners. Who behead religious converts. Who execute woman who drive. Who strap bombs to mentally challenged children and then blow up innocent people. Yes we should not allow any opinion in print or media that might offend this wonderful religion of peace. Get a life! these idiots will never be satisfied until the world has submitted to their brand of gutter religion.

Sep. 14, 2012 at 9:08pmWhen someone draws a cartoon of Mohammed, the Muslims riot. When someone writes a book about Mohammed, the Muslims riot. If someone makes a video about Mohammed, the Muslims riot.
If a women is outside caught unescorted, they rape her and say it is her fault.
If a blind person with a seeing-eye dog tries to get into a Muslim’s cab, they refuse to take the fare.
I am totally sick of all this Islamic whinning about every little single thing. We should pull our embassy staff out of all these countries, and once they are out of the country, we shut off all aid to those same countries, not one single bloody penny. We can take all that aid money and donate it to Israel to help them build up their defenses to protect their people from all these lunatics.
I don’t think any man who condones beating of women, marrying little girls (age 9???), hates dogs (must be a cat lover), and systematically promotes the death of anyone not of the religion that he makes up, deserves any respect. If Muslims don’t want to be offended, then they should stay off the internet, go back out into the desert, and play with their camels.
I understand that YouTube (an American innovation) is accessible over the whole world. We have freedom of speech in this country, but most countries do not have that right. Maybe YouTube should have an option for videos being uploaded to code them for US viewing only. That keeps our 1st Amendment freedom AND helps stop other countries from getting upset.

Sep. 16, 2012 at 12:12amThe last temptation of Christ, Jesus depicted as having sex with Mary Magdelene. What about the cross in a bottle of urine, displayed at the smithsonian as art a decade ago. Christians didn’t go out and kill and burn. Muslems need to understand the marketplace of ideas. All they are doing is showing Islam for what it is a religion of violence, get a clue muslems.

At least Jesus (Son of God and not just a prophet) and His followers are not as thin skinned as these savages or the world would be in a total blood bath. Get over it! Sep. 16, 2012 at 10:11pmWe have to understand Islam for what it is, and be careful when we use the word “radical”. Usually when someone uses the word “radical” when referring to Islam they are saying, “those who have perverted the ways of Islam”, but what they fail to recognize, (largely from not reading or understanding the Koran) is that these actions of violence and oppression amongst the world and amongst their own people do not stem from radical ideology, but from the very teachings of Islam it’self. A Muslim who understands and follows the Koran to a “T” will act accordingly as the Koran teaches in these situations. If you want to know what to expect from a fundamentalist Muslim, then you need to understand what they are taught. I can’t blame them for their actions because what would you do if you were taught from birth as they to believe as they believe. Does this mean that we should not defend ourselves? No! Any threat to freedom needs to be dealt with accordingly. But we need to stop supporting a cannibalistic society like Islam. Leave them to themselves and they will implode as they always do. The west will always be the Great Satan to them.

I wish everyone would read Brigette Gabrielle’s THEY MUST BE STOPPED (Amazon, less than $10) which gives a very quick read; history current and future and thoroughly BACKED UP / almost more references than paragraphs! It’s true, it’s accurate and you know when you’ve finished that read that you have the basic story of what ISLAM is, what they want with us. Gabrielle also has a web site on line. She’s former Muslim and has fought hard to get the word out to us. I pray for the rank and file Muslim. They thought they were joining a PEACE and LOVE Religion and it turned out to be 1) NOT a RELIGION at all but a THEOCRATIC DICTATORSHIP (Government) 2) NOT the GOD of ABRAHAM, ISAAC and JACOB but the creation of man and Satan 3) the only teachings worth while come from pieces of our OLD and NEW TESTAMENT…the rest is ARAB TRIBAL LEADERS fantasies and macho laws 4) in the year 1000 they got as big as they are now and finally the TURKS beat them …they were on course for full world then. They are on course for full world take over now. OBAMA IS A MUSLIM, a practicing, loyal, faithful
MUSLIM regardless of what he says…look at what he does. He’s been groomed by COMMUNISTS and anti-AMERICANIST like AYERS/SOROS/AXELROD/JARRETT for years. It’s only because of outspoken, defiant people who are alive now (Praise GOD) like Gabrielle, GLENN, Coulter, and others you respect, that we are still free. FIGHT HARD!!

Sep. 13, 2012 at 3:35pmVideos on You Tube have been instrumental and on the front line in exposing Islam as the corrupt, blood thirsty, murderous, woman hating cult that it is.
I’ve seen a lot of videos that show Muhammad was a perverted weirdo just by using Islam’s own “holy” books as their reference. Study the Hadiths and you find that Mo was one sick puppy.
That’s one of the reasons I think this recent “outrage” by Muslims about a film is all orchestrated. I’m sure you can find many videos that say about the same thing on You Tube right now.
But You Tube has also been cowardly in banning videos for no other reason than a lot of Muslims have complained that they were insulted.
Well too bad, Muslims. Islam insults me. I want IT banned from the face of the earth.
I heard that the founder of Google is a big obama supporter. I’m sure all it took was a phone call.

Sep. 14, 2012 at 6:23pmyes todd, i agree, when a so-called ” religion of peace”, shows the mercy it extended to our diplomats and embassy, it reveals itself once again for what it truly is, a satanic sham whose only purpose is the endgame desire of total world dominion, i for one wished we had a pres and government that would have responded with a show of force as in a sample made of one of their symbols of authority or power, if you look at the date (9/11), and realize that islamists always strike at symbols of authority or those in power of those whom they have issues with, then it is not hard to percieve, we in the west consider them to be on par with what we would call conventional thinking, we do not believe, and especially our current leadership that we are dealing with a very cunning and lethal mindset that is willing to sacrifice everything and everybody in the name of their false god allah. we had better wake-up and realize that before it is too late. the very act of raping our amassador before him being killed by this ruthless and godless mob exemplifies the mindset of a rabid dog, it should be put down, i wish we could legally hunt them all down in this country and ship them all back overseas to their own lands, i believe that we will pay the price eventually , just like a cancer patient neglecting early treatment, the odds are slimmer for survial as the cells grow in the body, america has not always been right in how we have dealt with others, but compared to the rest, we are saints.

Sep. 13, 2012 at 3:02pmIf you really believe that freedom of speech is essential to freedom and liberty, then you have to support free speech, even when it is offensive. You dont have to agree with what they say, but you must support their right to say it. If you have freedom of speech, you will hear and read things sometimes that you do not like. Those who defend free speech know that there is someone, somewhere, that will find what you say offensive, and demand censorship of you. By standing for all free speech, you protect your right to speak freely, and thereby remain unfettered by others.
Google should stand for free speech, for to cave into censorship in some regions only sets precedent to impose censorship in other areas, and censorship limits content. Search engines are necessary in an internet of wide and varied content, but, if all that is fit to print is Mao’s red book, well, you don’t need Google to navigate that.

Sep. 13, 2012 at 2:58pmGoogle needs to stick to its policies and the rules and laws by which it is governed… each individual country should decide how it wants to deal with the movie and its internet control. They need to address the people of their country and their behavior…. not try to control the people of other countries. In other words, take care of their own house.
Obama needs to stop the campaign trail for a few days and address the needs of foreign policy and the American People. We need a President right now.. not a campaigner!
Obama is so out of touch with the people he is supposed to represent he has no idea how unsettling it is to the people of America to see things unraveling in the Middleeast… today, he is the one with the thrill up his leg.

Sep. 13, 2012 at 3:08pmGoogle and youtube have a long history of treading on peoples free speech when the content is not politically corret… Unless it is an attack on christianity.. That is ok. A few years ago, google and youtube allowed videos of people burning bibles everywhere all over the site, but post a vid of a burning koran and they would ban your account. .. Then you could search “the truth about christianity” and get nothing but hateful things toward christians as the top search results.. Then do the same with islam “the truth about islam” and it is all pro islam propaganda.
