WASHINGTON (AP) — Heavily-armed insurgents attacked a British air base in southern Afghanistan Friday, killing two U.S. Marines and wounding several other troops, U.S. officials said.

Prince Harry, third in line to the British throne, is stationed at the base on a four-month combat tour in Afghanistan. There was no immediate word on his whereabouts at the time of the attack.

U.S. officials said the attack at Camp Bastion in Afghanistan’s Helmand province involved a range of insurgent weaponry, possibly including mortars, rockets or rocket-propelled grenades, as well as small arms fire.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because U.S. military authorities in Afghanistan had not yet announced the battle.

Camp Bastion is a British air base and is adjacent to Camp Leatherneck, the main base for U.S. Marines in Helmand.

A number of aircraft at the base also were hit by insurgent fire, the official said.

Capt. Harry Wales, as the prince is known in the military, is serving a four-month combat deployment as a gunner on an Apache helicopter. Harry, who turns 28 on Saturday, is expected to start flying Apache missions this week. This is his second tour in Afghanistan.

It also was not clear Friday whether the attack was linked at all to the protests and violence across the Muslim world this week that has been linked to an anti-Islamic film. Afghanistan’s southern region has been a hotbed of the insurgency and frequent attacks.

As an American I hate to read about Americans being killed. As a retired Marine it really p#ss’s me off to read about Marines being killed. Get our troops out of these countries full of hate filled a$$wipes

Bring our young men and women home from Afghanistan. Obama does not ever refer to what we are doing there in a “let’s win the war” lingo. If we are not out to win it–bring them home. They are being picked off one or more a day. This is ridiculous. We are going to end up with troops that we are unable to get home–especially since this high IQ administration really thinks that a video that has been on the internet for two months is responsible for this rage. I hope that Mitt Romney comes out and blasts this administration for its juvenile attitude in dealing with Muslim extremism–that it exists, and that it will bring down America because of all the political correctness, and the dangerous appeasement practices of this administration–not to mention Navy Chaplains that cannot say God—no one can iterate Muslim extremism–and last but not least, inviting these extremists into the different branches of the government. Give it a rest and WAKE UP AMERICA BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE. I think we are really close to too late as it stands now. How does the Secretary of State get up and reply to these terrorist attacks by condemning a stupid, juvenile movie that no one watched. Romney yell it loud and clear that we have free speech–at least for a bit longer.

Obama parachuted in to get a photo op with the four dead from Libya, and the media had an Obamasm.

Did he make it to the funeral in Indiana yesterday when another hero, a soldier who died in Afghanistan, was buried? Will he be there to honor the bodies of the two marines killed in Afghanistan yesterday when their bodies return to this country?

Will he even take the time to personally sign the condolence letter that the Defense Department sends out to fallen heroes families?

Maybe in his mind you’re only a hero if you are a politician and the cameras are running.

REALLY? with all of the drones in our arsenal? maybe instead of a million square foot building in Utah to house DHS US citizen spying computers they should use their drones and money and recourses to actually fight terrorists instead of focussing on us US citizens. Really, they are putting in a billion dollar facial recognition system/cameras on every street corner in the US all to track the only people in the world that are half sane. oathkeepers.org DHS is a joke only in place to strip US citizenry of their individual liberties, focus on those that truly mean us harm. WE lost 2 US Marines for God sake in a war zone where the hell are all of the drones and spy planes….

It saddens me greatly to have our wonderful young men and women die overseas for countries that hate us. Maybe its time to pull them all out and let those countries kill each other. To have our ambassador and 4 marines killed, and now two more soldier killed is a horrendous event in American history. This administration has left us open to these events. A weak president is worthless. If Obama is re-elected, we might as well give up. Our Republic will be lost forever.

An unsecure military base! Yet O’ will allow sequestration cuts to military weapons and cut the number of soldiers, yet expect them to defend themselves. If our economy were vibrant, we wouldn’t need a military cut, but his solution will be higher taxes. He won’t even defend our soldiers prior to the cuts.

  I agree. This should be layed at their feet: Obama, Jay Carney and Hillary Clinton. They want to pass this off on that move. Look what those Islamists have done to our people and Bibles. They think they can do this and some not retaliate. When Obama gets out (arrested or whatever) they will think twice before acting like they do.
