Jay Carney: This Is Not a Case of Protest Directed the United States

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney on Friday insisted that the protests in the Middle East are not “directed at the United States” but are instead the direct result of an anti-Muslim YouTube clip.

“This is a fairly volatile situation, and it is in response not to United States policy, obviously not to the administration, not to the American people. It is in response to a video, a film, that we have judged to be reprehensible and disgusting — that in no way justifies any violent reaction to it.”

Carney went on to repeat this point at least two more times during his daily press briefing with reporters.

“But this is not a case of protests directed at the United States writ large or at U.S. policy, but it is in response to video that is offensive to Muslims,” said Carney.

“The unrest we’ve seen is in reaction to a film in which the United States government had no involvement,”he added.

Carney explained that for other countries it can be “difficult to understand” why the United States allows such offensive speech as that displayed in the anti-Muhammad flick “Innocence of Muslims.” He reiterated that the Obama administration would not seek to limit freedom of speech, even speech it finds offensive.

However, today’s events — in addition to the anti-American protests throughout the week — seemingly contradict Carney’s assertion. In country’s like Tunisia, Lebanon, Malaysia, Indonesia, India and even Israel, protesters burned American flags and chanted phrases like “death to America,” Fox News reported.

Earlier this week, U.S. Ambassador to Libya, Christopher Stevens, and three staffers were killed after a group of armed radical Islamists stormed the American embassy complex in Benghazi.

Additionally, anti-American protesters in Morocco Wednesday reportedly chanted “Death to Obama” outside the U.S. consulate in Casablanca.

Despite numerous news reports that indicate the attacks on the U.S. consulate in Libya was planned ahead of time to occur on the 11th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, Carney also said there was no evidence to suggest that was the case.

  Did you hear Glenn today on the radio? He basically endorsed Ron Paul’s foreign policy. He said we need to pull our troops in the middle east and Afghanistan home. He said we need to support Israel diplomatically but not fight their wars for them.

  I already know what Obama’s speach will be, “there is no excuse for these actions, but the video was offensive, but that not an excuse, that was a really offensive video though.” This man has never chosen a side that wasn’t already in his pre-presidency agenda. Glen Beck, Rush Limbaugh etc have been working on the misguided assumption too, that from top to bottom the people of the USA are not being lied to incessantly. I’m came to the realization last year in the primary season that when Beck, Rush, Hannity, Red Eye Radio, Schnitt Show, Andy Dean, Mark Levine et al (Conservative Radio Host’s) all had the same reason to discount Paul.

There is a great book by Bridgette Gabriel called “Because They Hate” in which she shares in depth research and personal experience with attacks by Muslims. I highly recommend it.   To say that Israel shouldn’t exist is to say that the USA shouldn’t exist either. Heck, at least Israel had history in that place. We certainly didn’t. The Arabs lost wars and were subjects of the crown. The British ruled that land and could do with it as they pleased no differently than you can with your land or the US with ours. When we showed up in North America it wasn’t empty. People were here already. But do the native Americans own the US now? Nope. They lost. Period. Get over it. They have their little spaces and have the rights of dual citizenship but essentially their claim that this is their occupied land is moot.
  
  The Arabs have a choice. Accept and move on as the native Americans did OR attack Israel. Unfortunately, since the advent of gunpowder every arab army ever assembled blows chunks. They suck in unspeakable ways. They have no courage or character and leading them into battle is like herding cats…coward cats.
  
  You can’t use the 622BC date unless you are going to apply that to every other border in the world. Selectively holding Israel to that while letting every other political border stand is symptomatic of someone who won’t see reason because they are blinded with animosity.
  
  Don’t like Israel? Pick up a weapon and do something about it. Heck, don’t like the USA? Same same. I have no problem with any of that. Just don’t try to tell me that there is some sort of injustice there.

  GONZO, Its a bit late on this story to say this, but towards the end of Rush’s show today, he was talking about there being either a paper trail or an E trail regarding the information that was out there about the attacks on these two embassies and how certain authorities did gain that info and pass it along to the Americans. Undoubtedly, our government was warned and did know of the potential of these attacks. If not specifically those two embassies, it could have been either of several mid east embassies. Still, nothing was done to upgrade security for any of them for the first time since 9-11.

  If it’s the crusades surely the animosity would be from both sides wouldn’t it? You do recall the influx of muslim immigrants throughout Europe and the US yes? This isn’t a simple case of “we’re on their land” is it champ? They’re on ours too.   What I find almost as disturbing as the attack on our embassy in Cairo is the attack on the embassy that originated right here within the United States!
  
  As we know, the embassy tweeted a statement condemning the film in question in an effort to calm the gathering crowds before violence erupted. The statement did not have the approval of the State Department nor the President. You can imagine what it must have been like in that embassy at the time and their effort to do something to fend off the violence.
  
  We know what happened next. Our Cairo embassy was attacked, as was our Libyan embassy. WHILE THAT ATTACK WAS ONGOING, another attack on our embassy came from right here in the US!
  
  Romney attacked US embassy employees for the statement they’d made to quell the violence they foresaw! Romney couldn’t even wait until the radicals had stopped their attack, nor wait until he even understood what was happening before piling on the embassy with his own verbal assault.
  
  Yes, Romney is a fine American (sarcasm) to launch his own verbal assault on the actions of embassy personnel while bullets flew, fire raged and Americans died.
