‘Pro-Life, Pro-Gun,’ & Anti-Obama?: The Campaign Ad That’s Not For Who You Think It Is
After the last census numbers were tabulated, Pennsylvania lost two congressional seats and was forced to redistrict the state. In one of the newly created districts an unusual battle is underway, pitting Rep. Mark Critz — a Democrat — against GOP candidate Keith Rothfus.
Congressman Critz is the incumbent. He was elected to that seat back in 2010, filling the spot occupied for 36 years by John Murtha. Critz’s first TV ad of the fall is confusing to some people as it attacks his own party — including Obama by name — on a few points typically associated with Democrats.
Here’s the pro-coal, pro-life, and pro-gun ad:
That language is certainly not found in typical campaign ads seen from a Democrat running for office. Perhaps the old adage, “All politics is local” applies here.
In 2011, the state’s GOP leadership redrew the district’s lines in hopes of making it a likely Republican pick up in 2012. Politics PA reports that Critz is running against the Obama administration for at least one reason: President Obama lost the district by at 8 points in 2008.
Mr. Rothfus has responded with a statement from his campaign manager, Jon Raso:
“The voters know Congressman Critz’s liberal leadership is exactly why they’re struggling, and all he can do to try and stay in power is deceive them. Someone who supports President Obama in over three out of every four votes and voted with Nancy Pelosi 95% of the time during her leadership is the last thing from ‘independent.’”
Current polling data is inconsistent at best.
- A House Majority PAC / SEIU poll has Critz ahead by 6 points
- This summer, the Critz campaign conducted its own survey and claimed a 10 point lead.
- Roll Call calls the race a “toss up”
In CONTROL, Glenn Beck presents a passionate, fact-based case for guns that reveals why gun control isn’t really about controlling guns at all; it’s about controlling us. Posted on September 14, 2012 at 12:18pmLying POS. Voted with Obummer & Pelosi 95% of the time (according to the congressional record) and yet “says” he’s against gun control and abortion…..yeah, right! One term and gone!

Posted on September 14, 2012 at 1:18pmLOL if you look at the Roll Call site they identify a single digit lead of at least 6 points and then call the race a toss up. They clearly understand statistics about as well as mike. But of course the blaze is non-partisan. Or is it a toss up.

Posted on September 14, 2012 at 3:16pmPlease remember that the majority party in both the house and senate control those chambers. Everything from introducing legislation to allowing the votes to occur are controlled by the majority leaders in both chambers. I don’t care if this democrat is the reincarnation of Thomas Jefferson, his party affiliation alone should be the deciding factor this election year. We cannot afford to lose one seat in either chamber and MUST do everything to win more. No votes for any democrat. Period.

Posted on September 14, 2012 at 12:10pmso you’re saying you’re essentially a Republican who wants to feel good about yourself for having morally superior positions on social issues?
That’s the problem of the GOP, NOT that they are socially inferior, but they are admittedly intolerant of behaviors that while abhorrent in some specific cases, are NOT the things government should be intervening in pro or con… instead of denouncing abortion, JUST campaign not to fund it and highlight and support the other more human options… instead of attacking homosexuality and gay marriage, merely support traditional marital definition but recognize the humanity of all, irregardless of their sexual orientation. And find a legal way for homosexuals to fully share themselves with one another.
The founding fathers opposed a two party system. They knew a Republic virtually guarantees the best man (or woman) for the Presidency won’t get the job, but it also protects agaisnt the worst person taking over (and before you argue… Olberman, Matthews, Rahm, Alinksy, Krugerman… trust me, there are worse than BHO)… with a limited helm’s man, the Congress has to have backbone and courage and integrity… all of which there is too little of in Washington today.

Posted on September 14, 2012 at 12:30pmYes RayDoc, some people do actually hold morrally superior values but it’s not to feel good about ourselves since we all have sinned and are currently sinners. Those values can be found in Gods word. You can speak your mind about moral relativity all day long as I get me free speech as well.

Posted on September 14, 2012 at 12:08pmThis seems to be the campaign strategy of many Democrats this year – run to the right of Obama. However, I think most people recognize that any Democrat gets his or her campaign funding from the DNC, which means in the end, every Democrat elected will have to toe the line with regard to ideology. So this pro-gun, pro-life person will be one of many who has a press conference after a contentious vote explaining that he “evolved” into a leftist ideologue who hates God, guns, business owners and conservatives.

Posted on September 14, 2012 at 11:57amMurtha’s constituents wouldn’t care if he was Joe Stalin himself, as long as he can bring home the handouts. If his district voters really cared about those things, why would they vote in an anti-gun pro baby killer like Murtha.

Posted on September 14, 2012 at 12:05pm@Momrules If he believed all that he wants them to believe he would be a Republican. Murtha was in the military so obviously he must have believed in guns but I remember him as one of the meanest I cannot write the words so will just say that he spent tax payer dollars for his own personal airport which he rarely used. And John Kerry must believe in guns as he was wounded to hear him tell it and comes from Boston with the Big Dig reputation. And Mom I don’ t know how old you are but there was a hugely televised debate way back between John Kerry and John ONeil on the Dick Cavet Show. It is still there. John ONeil is the vet who helped get John Kerry defeated. You ought to read it. Let me know in another post if you do.

Posted on September 14, 2012 at 11:23amGlenn Beck just said on his radio show that we basically need to adopt Ron Paul’s foreign policy. He finally gets it. He called for a complete withdrawal from the middle east. Glenn finally gets the idea of blow back now. Too bad he didnt throw his weight behind him for his “crazy” stance on the middle east that now Glenn agrees with.

Posted on September 14, 2012 at 11:56amTwisting the truth a little, aren’t you? Ron Paul thinks the muzz just want to kill us because we’re in their countries. Wrong. Ron Paul is not fond of Israel and sees no benefit to allying with the only civilization in the Middle East. Beck wouldn’t go for that in a million years.
It you want to be accurate, Glenn said to give these countries an ultimatum: Either you pledge to protect our people BECAUSE YOU want us here or we’re out. Case closed.

Posted on September 14, 2012 at 1:06pmCan you put the exact quote from Ron Paul proving he is not a fan of Israel. I think Ron Paul is a fan of America. As far as the Muslims wanting to kill us because we are in their land, well that is what Osama Bin Laden said on his US tv interview in 1998. I mean you can take his word for it, or just ignore it.
You are “twisting the truth”. Glenn Beck said if the middle eastern nations are unwilling to protect our embassies then close them, but he said to pull the troops out of the middle east and Afghanistan. He did say support Israel but we dont have to fight their wars for them (pretty much exactly what Ron Paul said). Its also funny Ron Paul supported cutting off funding for all of these nations and now its the cool thing to say in Washington.
Try listening next time.

Beck is speaking of being less intervening while Paul is an isolationist. The difference is that Beck believes it’s time we stop trying to be friends with our enemies and to stand with our true friends. Paul doesn’t seem to think we need friends at all and that we should just ignore the rest of the world. In many ways, I think that might be why Paul has such a hard time getting people to go along with his ideas.
Think of it this way: when a company is looking to promote someone, are they more likely to choose the hard worker who gets along well with others and is cooperative or the person who comes in, does all his work on his own, and goes home without ever trying to get along with others? I think Paul knows how to fix a lot that is wrong with our country but his record, at least to me, says that he doesn’t work well as part of a team and lacks leadership skills.
