‘Read the Bible Jack A#%’: Dr. Pepper Sparks Creationist Outrage Over ‘Evolution of Flavor’ Facebook Ad
Companies sometimes get themselves into trouble when they use controversial issues and themes to push their products. Dr. Pepper, the popular soft drink company, is the latest brand to spark outrage after it chose to use evolutionary theory in a new Facebook graphic.
Entitled, “The Evolution of Flavor,” the ad, which is red, pink and white in its color, shows an ape, a creature that appears to be transitioning and then a human being. Under the ape’s image it says “pre-Pepper.” The caption for the middle, transitionary picture reads, “Pepper discovery” and the final image, showing an individual drinking the beverage reads, “Post-Pepper.”

The reaction has been fascinating to see unfold. While some have expressed anger over the image, claiming that it showcases the company’s support for evolutionary theory, others see it as comical.
The graphic was originally posted on Thursday on Dr. Pepper’s Facebook page with a message that reads “Now that’s progress.” Already, it has more than 23,800 “likes” and over 3,100 comments.
“Evolution ain’t real…Read the bible jack a#%,” wrote one individual who was displeased with the ad.
“Just lost my support. Will no longer be buying your products,” wrote another, with others sharing very similar messages and pledging not to “sponsor” the company and its products any longer.
But not everyone was dissuaded by or discontented with the ad.
Another commenter expressed his delight at the outrage coming from some, writing, “I believe in evolution, and love how pissed theright-wing fundies are getting about this silly little ad, but I still hate Dr. Pepper. Anybody know where Pepsi stands on the issue?”
And others took aim at the Bible, which detractors were holding up as prime evidence against evolutionary theory.
“The bible is a piece of crap work of fiction. Grow up and stop believing in fairy tales,” another commenter wrote.
Here’s a sampling of some of the messages, as they appear on Dr. Pepper’s Facebook page:

So far, the company has not publicly addressed the furious debate it has sparked. Recently, Oreo (made by Kraft) also found itself getting some criticism after the company publicly supported gay pride on its Facebook page.
The subjects of evolution and creationism have been widely-discussed of late, with scientist Bill Nye and the Creation Museum sounding-off against one another through viral videos and media appearances.

Posted on September 14, 2012 at 9:26amby your logic, if evolution is THE only means by which any speciation has developed, and given the species we know of are more extinct than alive today, and given our obvious weakness and susceptibility to the rest of the universe, we should be extinct, too…
so by some.. (ahem) MIRACLE we aren’t… I will grant you the FAR right ‘THIS WAS ALL DONE IN SEVEN DAYS’ crazies are just that… as crazy as those who insist it’s all simply evolution, basedo n finches that were not truly separate species at all (oops) and on a ‘scientific theory’ (hasn’t/ can’t be proven in its entirety, so by definition it could be wrong) that involves a fudge factor to get that critical element: life.
Pascal (another scientist in his day) had it right… if we’re wrong about God, living a Christian life is not a bad thing… if we’re right…
But i dont’ want to convert you @End… you have free will and get to make your own choices… that is i suspect our biggest difference: i wouldn’t stand on the blog here and belittle your for your lack of belief, but i don’t have to bring other people down to feel good about myself.

Posted on September 14, 2012 at 11:08amAccording to the best science we have in cellular and molecular biology origins of life on ear are as close to near-indefinite improbability as science gets to see. That is with our current understanding of course (but i fail to see why the most related fields of science best evidence are weighted as less important than random story makers of say anthropologist or general scientists. Note most molecular and cellular scientist don’t even have expertise on this issue). Now the hypothesis of evolution is an logical one. And one i actually agree with (in general as there are a few different concurrent hypothesis). But that doesn’t mean ill ignore the areas that are not substantiated by science, just like we shouldn’t have stated as fact: the earth is flat, spontaneous generation is how all things come to be, quantum mechanics cannot be real; we shouldn’t state state things as facts when the science doesn’t support that position. Even if the rhetoric does.
All the rhetoric in the world will not change the scientific reality that we should not be here, with what we know.

Posted on September 14, 2012 at 12:11pmI don’t understand what all the fuss is about. The only way I see the Bible differing from evolution is on how we “Humans” came to be. Both evolution and the Bible indicate that life started in the water (Genesis 1:20 – 1:22). Science has proven that all materials are created by stars including the stuff we are made of and once again the Bible confirms this (Genesis 2:7). The truth is that you can have evolution with a Creator and people need to stop being so closed minded about this. If you want to believe that we are just a random creation of the Universe and that we evolved from monkeys (or a common ancestor) fine, but if you are wrong, what happens to you after you die?

Posted on September 14, 2012 at 2:17pm@ ENCINOM…Evolution as a theory of molecules to man is considered a historical science and therefore it is impossible to conduct experiments or collect observational data to test this theory. It is a mere interpretation of the evidence that everyone possess (ID and evolutionist alike). Operational sciences such as expirementation with DNA etc. actually argues against the theory of evolution (molecules to man). There are simply too many nonscientific and frankly absurd conclusions given about what we know is factual in the operational science studies that can be experimented and observed to substantiate the theory of evolution historically from molecules to man. Anyone who claims otherwise has not studied the actual science for themselves, but has regurgitated what they have been indoctrinated with educationally. The simple fact that molecules to man requires an increase in useful genetic information is an incredible obstacle to the idea as it has NEVER been observed even when intentionally trying to be manipulated by scietists. The amazing thing is, despite the colossal scientific issues with molecules to man belief, is that so many “educated” continue to hold on to it. However, many leading (nonreligious) scientists have finally started abandoning the idea because they simply cannot defend such an absurd theory any longer in spite of evidence to the contrary. Give me your best “evidence” for molecules to man scientificlly speaking. Thank you….

From the time of conception we grow up and grow older until we die.In that process the cells in our bodies have to continually replenish themselves. Francis Crick my friend believes in design because he knows exactly what I have posted to you. That molecules to man is NOT possible based upon all the operational scientific knowledge we possess. As you point out he has no religious axe to grind but is at least honest enough to admit that DNA has been designed (even if he believes it is aliens that seeded the earth with it). So far over 900 scientists have signed a dissent of neo-darwinism as being an unsupported & false theory to describe the observations we see through the lens of modern science.

The following is the actual list of over 900 and their credentials. If you want to denounce the theory of Evolution for lacking substantial evidence that’s fine. Clearly most scientists will disagree with you, but that’s fine that you have some higher standard of acceptance.
My only request to you is to please hold Creationism to the same standard.
In other words, if you say Evolution cannot be supported, you cannot in good conscious turn around and say that Creationism can be.
Anyone that holds Creationism to the SAME standard as Evolution in terms of substantiating evidence, must either denounce both or accept Evolution. There is really no other way around it. For every one thing Evolution lacks in testable observations, or historical evidence, or practical examples, Creationism lacks 10 more. And for every hole you find in Evolution theory, there are 10 more holes in Creationism.

Posted on September 15, 2012 at 4:13pm@ VOTEBUSH….Well tell that to many of the ireligious scientists that have taken a position of ID as the only theory that can even breach the gap from molecules to man. And just what holes do you think exist in ID. If you prsent some to me maybe we can test your assertion and see if there is any reasonable explanation. Because you do understand the argument for origins is based upon historical science not operational science so we are dealing with interpretations of the evidence we both possess which is identical the question is which theory explains that evidence the most ocnsistent with what we know to be factual from the operational sciences. So I would assert it is you that is holding 2 different standards up. What you fail to realize is that both theorys begin with a presupposition about the reality we perceive. The question is, who’s presupposition reflects most accurately the nature of what exists? Your position of origins believes that somehting literally had to come into being from nothing since all believe in a universe that displays a beginning. Operational science concluded centuries ago that spontaneous generation (something from nothing) does not occur. You also, have the problem of explaing how molecules actually became living organisms? Evolution has failed to even begin to explain this gap and they have no real answer for how that transition ocurred. Next you have the problem with irreducible complexity within the simple cell itself. Thank you..

First of all, no scientist believes in ID, that is absurd. It is contrary to what Science strives to be.
You’re right, there are somethings that Science cannot answer as of yet, such as what caused the Big Bang as you pointed out. As you put it,
“Your position of origins believes that something literally had to come into being from nothing since all believe in a universe that displays a beginning.”
Correct. There are theories (M theory aka String theory) that propose, mathematically, what this state was like, but I agree, as of now we don’t know for sure.
HOWEVER, ID faces the same problems. If you want to say some big buy in the sky made everything, GREAT! That answers that question. The next obvious questions is where did that big guy come from? To say He just kind of exists is not sufficient. Why can’t we just forgo that step and say the Universe just kind of ‘existed’ in a bang state. Why do you NEED someone to have created it, but don’t require something to have created that someone?
Surely you see my point? Fabricating reasons (such as ID) as potential answers to a question really only adds OTHER questions without actually getting us any closer to an answer. Like trying to count to infinity, you can say one more number, but you’re not actually any closer to the final number.

You are correct, an organ or animal condition of “irreducible complexity” would disprove Evolution… Please find me one.
There are a lot of things that might disprove Evolution. If God came down and told us he created everything that would disprove Evolution… I wont hold my breath..

Posted on September 16, 2012 at 6:20amI like Dr. Pepper and unless someone can prove this company somehow did something major to deserve all the criticism, I will continue to buy the product. I am a staunch conservative and a Christian and I can’t help but wonder why everyone is making a big deal out of this. If you go into any public school in any town and find your way to the science department, you will find a poster which depicts evolution as a fact, similar to, and the obvious source of this rendition. This was obviously a sort of parody of that depiction and not a political or atheistic message. How trivial and almost moronic are we becoming these days? I will not boycott anything that relies on the 1st amendment. If you don’t like what someone is saying or what you assume they are saying, you just simply use YOUR OWN RIGHT to counter that issue. In this case, obviously Dr. Pepper did not evolve, it was created but I truly believe the soft drink has more of a chance to have evolved then the universe. It definitely takes allot more faith to believe the universe came from nothing than to believe in intelligent design. If I tried to tell a psychiatrist my car (allot less complicated than the universe) just evolved in my driveway one day, he would most likely diagnose me as delusional with hallucinations. Everyone is entitled to their beliefs, so go for it Dr. pepper. Pay no attention to the eighth graders in here, they look at everything through the prisms of right and left or political conspiracy.

Posted on September 16, 2012 at 9:08am@VOTEBUSH….I’m sorry my friend you are simply ignorant on this point (not meant anyway but the actual definition of lacking knowledge) when you stated..”First of all, no scientist believes in ID, that is absurd. It is contrary to what Science strives to be.” “The next obvious questions is where did that big guy come from?”….This is not a problme as the question is an illogical nonsequitur. God by definition is eternal. Something must be eternal or we all run into the impossibility of infinite first causal regression. Again, this old problem is not a problem for those who have debated this topic deeply. By your approach and tactics you are either green in the area of this debate topic or you are getting your information from sites without any real background of knowledge in these topics. While neither theory answers all questions that is really not the point. The question is which explanation explains in a more consistent way the evidence before us all. That is why MANY actual (believe it or not) scientists are ID proponents when it comes to origins. If you don’t believe me do your own research because you are the first person I have ever debated that claimed no scientists were ID advocates. Many have written books and peer reviewed research on it. Finally, just so you know my credentials so you don’t post youtube videos anymore I have over 15 years of college, graduate, and postgraduate education (not bragging just so you know I don’t need more educatio

Sir, I am anything but Green on this topic.
The question “where did God come from” is about as far from a non sequitur as you can get. It is literally the ONLY sequitur to follow the claim “God created it.”.
Your claim “God by definition is eternal” is a logical fallacy.
There is no proof to the existence of God so making arguments about what his intrinsic characteristics are is completely baseless. “Unicorns, by definition, have white fur”. Unicorns can’t be substantiated, so of course I cannot substantiate the claim that their fur is white.
And why can the Judeo-Christian God exist, but the literally HUNDREDS of gods from other current and past religions not? There is about as much evidence to suggest Krishna walked the earth as there is for Jesus, yet from your perspective one is a much more obvious scenario, why? They both are myth.
MOST IMPORTANTLY:
If God can be eternal, why can’t the Superverse described in M Theory be the eternal originator of our universe? That is at least supported with math. If you are so desperate to find a point of creation for the Big Bang, M Theory does just that and it does it with verifiable methods. I am not going to get into the details of M Theory (I don’t know much of them), but here’s a video to get you started.

As for the charge that people are “parroting” info from “evolution sites” without actually understanding the issue at hand, the unless you can refute the material cited, whether the person posting it fully understands what they are posting or not is irrelevant. It is entirley appropriate and even commendable for someone to back up their claim with reputable citations. Also, one needn’t have a PhD in molecular biology or genetics to have a solid working understanding of issues pertaining to human evolution. You (Sleazy) post links all the time that you believe support your view. I wouldn’t deride that as “parroting” and I find it curious that you would criticise “KindSoul” for posting something he or she found on an “evolution site” (as long as the refernce is legit it doesn’t matter where you get it from). Creationists post junk science quotes from creationist sites all the time, so much so in fact that even the creationist website AIG advises people to be careful about what arguments they “parrot”.
Now, if someone posts a link suggesting it supports something when it doesn’t, that’s another matter and you would be right to point out to the poster that their referenc doesn’t refute what it is intended to.
Also, Sleazy, you seem to be suggesting you have academic credentials pertinent to the matter at hand. Why not ju

Posted on September 16, 2012 at 3:40pm@Sleazy and KindSoul: Just a few additional comments. The preponderance of the evidence places the time frame of mitochondrial Eve at well beyond the Biblical literalist 6000 year time frame. But it’s important to note that even if “mitochondrial Eve” lived 6000 years ago, it would be irrelevant to the Genesis vs Darwin debate because mitochondrial Eve isn’t supposed to be the first woman, she is the oldest maternal ancestor of the present day human population. She wasn’t the only woman around then either, and she was not a contemporary of Y-chromosomal “Adam” (the male line counterpart of mitochondrial Eve). This isn’t fertile ground for those looking to find scientific support for a literal intpretation of Gensis.
There is a pretty good, well sourced Wikipedia article regarding the key issues here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitochondrial_Eve
Finally, I would just say KindSoul, I’ve interacted with Sleazy here before and my sense of him is that while we obviously disagree about evolution, he’s a basically decent person and does a pretty commendable job at keeping what can be very heated discussions civil. Try to keep that in mind. These threads are more interesting when they don’t desens into flame wars (not that this one has, but too many do).

Posted on September 16, 2012 at 7:18pm@Sleazly.. again.. Gaps in evolutionary knowledge and a lack of known “mechanism” for origin of life to this point in history makes for a convenient argument for the creationist. Throughout the timeline of “natural history” creationists easily use “gaps” in data to strengthen their beliefs and dismiss extant evidence. Then, when the data boils over into the realm of (mostly) irrefutable, they conveniently adopt the new world view provided by scientific pursuits into their own beliefs and keep truck’n. Germ theory is a perfect example. Currently, as long as you’re not a “young earth” creationist type of creationist you have your foot in the door on the subject of origin of life and gaps in evolution and can feel relatively assured within your lifetime that there is a good chance your position will retain strength. If you could live for 1000 years, you might be shocked to find out someone figures out the perfect “niche” to recapitulate spontaneous nucleic acid polymerization and template based replication of those molecules. We can take random RNA polymers and keep feeding em through a column until one is selected for having (by chance) kinase activity. The Miller experiment certainly doesn’t explain origin of life but man, that must have really upset creationists at the time.

I find it fascinating how someone could be the “savior of the world” when at the time only a small niche of people in one small spot on the globe even heard of him. Don’t you find it the least be ironic that your human-sacrifice-to-himself-to-save-yourselves-from-himself didn’t do a damn thing for anyone in another hemisphere? Centuries passed and generations of people died not knowing your Jewish zombie would have been their savior let alone did they know what the heck Judaism was. If it was that damn important you’d think your so called “god” would be willing to save everyone on equal terms but it appears they weren’t important enough. And you wonder why everyone doesn’t goosestep to your religion, it’s because your murderous, spiteful, inconsistent, etc etc “god” is not and will never be worthy of worship.

(Gibbons A., Calibrating the mitochondrial clock, Science 279:28–29 (2 January 1998)
‘We obtained over 55 kilobases of sequence from three autosomal loci encompassing Alu repeats for representatives of diverse human populations as well as orthologous sequences for other hominoid species at one of these loci. Nucleotide diversity was exceedingly low. Most individuals and populations were identical. Only a single nucleotide difference distinguished presumed ancestral alleles from descendants. These results differ from those expected if alleles from divergent archaic populations were maintained through multiregional continuity. The observed virtual lack of sequence polymorphism is the signature of a recent single origin for modern humans, with general replacement of archaic populations.’ (Knight, A., Batzer, M.A., Stoneking, M., Tiwari, H.K., Scheer, W.D., Herrera, R.J. and Deininger, P.L., DNA sequences of Alu elements indicate a recent replacement of the human autosomal genetic complement, Proc. From there the love story of GOD for man and, at times, man’s love for GOD continues until the last mark of punctuation in the last book of THE HOLY BIBLE, Revelation.
you all are free to choose GOD, JESUS AND THE HOLY SPIRIT, or not. Isn’t that something? THE ONE WHO made you, the ones who reject HIM, leaves you free to choose to love HIM back.
Far, far different than the muslime group. they will sodomize you in front of your family and cut off your heads and let your blood run in the streets. you get NO choice with them.

Posted on September 14, 2012 at 10:10am@Sleezy, Let me insert the next paragraph which you left out.
Regardless of the cause, evolutionists are most concerned about the effect of a faster mutation rate.
For example, researchers have calculated that “mitochondrial Eve”–the woman whose mtDNA was
ancestral to that in all living people–lived 100,000 to 200,000 years ago in Africa. Using the new
clock, she would be a mere 6000 years old.
No one thinks that’s the case, but at what point should models switch from one mtDNA time zone to
the other? “I’m worried that people who are looking at very recent events, such as the peopling of
Europe, are ignoring this problem,” says Laurent Excoffier, a population geneticist at the University
of Geneva. Indeed, the mysterious and sudden expansion of modern humans into Europe and other
parts of the globe, which other genetic evidence puts at about 40,000 years ago, may actually have
happened 10,000 to 20,000 years ago–around the time of agriculture, says Excoffier. And mtDNA
studies now date the peopling of the Americas at 34,000 years ago, even though the oldest
noncontroversial archaeological sites are 12,500 years old. Recalibrating the mtDNA clock would
narrow the difference (Science, 28 February 1997, p. 1256).
You cut and paste things you really don’t understand.

Hinduism pre-dates Judaism. Prior to Judaism their where other religions in the fertile crescent. Why not the Zoroastrianism creation myth.
Where is the Christian evidence outside of the bible for their God being the Creator?
Of course science doesn’t have this issue, science uses facts and tests and refines theories.

Posted on September 14, 2012 at 10:44pm@ KINDSOUL….You have no idea who I am, my education, or field of study. My point was is that it was argued for years that the age was several hundred thousand years old and now almost a 10 fold decrease by people in your camp as to the age of the mDNA. You are the one who has no clue what they are talking about, went to an evolution site lQQked up my comment and posted the reply you did because you don’t understand what it is really implying about our understanding of DNA and what the 2 studies combined are pointing towards. Try again my friend if you think I don’t know the science. I would put my educational background and credentials up against most here on the blaze that so arrogantly assert what they “know” to be truth and what the “know” science demonstrates. The problem you don’t understand is that the fast mutation rate argues against and old human population. What you posted is stating that the models that have always been used to come up with time frames is quite overly estimated based upon what they are OBSERVING. You simply don’t even know what that means for your argument, “that humans have a common ancestor hundreds of thousands of years (if not even longer by some stimates) in the past”. You don’t understand population bottlenecking and the lack of polymorphism. The rates they have identified and the lack of polymorphism identified point to a very recent (5000-10000 year) common single origin for modern man. Thank you….

Terror means one is in fear of one’s safety, property or life. A homemade movie that is anti-Islam does not make a person fear for their life. If that was true, then Christians are being terrorize by Hollywood all the time (how many anti-Christian movies have they made?)

This world is heading off a cliff anyway. I use coupons combined with in store sales on name brand items. I never pay full retail for anything. I have had to learn to do this, to stretch a dollar to the fullest extent. I usually pay less for them than most ‘off name brands‘. And the other day ,I made a Killing on craft foods.. I paid “0” Monies for over $200.oo dollars in product ,that were on a sale combined with in-store coupons .
Also in regards to the stupid twitter comments. I would also like to add. Unlike Muslims ,I do not get so easily offended every time some clown makes a comment against my faith. I will continue to enjoy my Dr. Pepper, as I continue to ignore their petty comments.

I don’t believe in Evolutiton…however..If you wanted to use a beverage for such an “Evolutionary ” ad..Beer would be more appropriate on time scales as it goes back much further than Dr Pepper into the halls of History.
However am not a big beer drinker….but at the same time …I find it interesting how many animals like beer…other than humans. As I am not a big beer drinker this was a surprise for me when I first realized this about the beer appetites of many animals. Does this mean evolution is not happening???
But I will not be getting violent and or killing people over a Dr Pepper Video. Nor labeling and name calling. That to me is a definite sign or indicator that Evolution is not happening.

Posted on September 17, 2012 at 12:36pmDora — you are so funny! I love to read your postings! “The Bible” means nothing to most people on earth. Your declarations are so broad and clearly reflect your beliefs. I am amazed at how emotional people are towards those who have different views than themselves.
If the “Bible means nothing” — America was developed by western Europeans who brought the Bible with them; Thomas Jefferson had the US Congress print 10,000 Bibles; many politicians take their oath of office by placing their hand on the Bible; US military has chaplains; I can’t think of a single town in the USA that does not have at least one church; Catholics just built a $29 million cathedral in the heart of Los Angles (AKA City of Angles).
And apparently you haven’t looked much into Middle East archeology studies nor high school / college courses that teach the Bible as literature. Many of the classic plays, novels make reference to Biblical statements or stories.
Hang in there Dora — there must be a reason that you are visiting and posting to a website that is owned and presented by an alcoholic Mormon. You trolls are just so …darn … emotional and demanding that everyone else thinks and believes as you do. I had a left thinking brother-in-law who used to declare how he objected to a ‘vanilla’ world …..didn’t want all same thinking but darnedest thing if he wanted everyone to belief as he did — wanting diverse ideas but only if they were like his!

Interesting that you point out to those who declare that they have FAITH in their belief systems. They don’t state that they have a scientific line to support that which must be accepted by faith.
Oddly those who have been posting that they ‘believe in evolution’ vs. “creationism” but in order to believe in ‘evolution’ that is a faith and belief in a mystical desire to be ‘rational thinking”. There has never been any scientific evidence to show that non life elements can randomly create even a one cell living plant / animal. By applying advanced mathematics and statistical analysis — the odds are amazingly so minute that such a single event could have happened randomly that it is zero. Then compound the additional magical events that must have taken place — non living material to one living cell; one cell must survive and in numbers enough to reproduce; exist long enough to evolve into something of ‘higher complexity’; and on and on and on until the alleged highest creature is “mankind’. And nothing more complex since then? The pure application of mathematical probabilities is simply that this cannot be the way that life began and then advanced to humans. Now, one can opt to believe in this myth of how all life began but it certainly is not ‘objective nor based in scientific reasoning.”

Posted on September 14, 2012 at 8:39amANOMNOMNOMMM, for a scientist you fail at knowing what science is. If you are referring to technical science which we derive engineering and math from then yes you win, but origin science is based on an assumption which can not be tested in a lab, and if it is “tested” the output is nothing more than affirmation that you still have a “hunch”. You cannot apply technical science to origin science with a faulty assumption and poof get a desired output. You of all people should know this seeing how you are a “scientist”! Right? Keep on trucking buddy.

For you yourself are already biased toward evolution therefore each and every “test” you make will give you your supposed conclusion because evolution is not a technical science. You cannot throw out carbon-dating (which technically uses technical science) as the proof of your made up fantasies. I do not try to reproduce creation in hopes of convincing you that creationism is the real thing, because it cannot be. I welcome with open arms that it is faith-based, so I would hope that you also would realize that evolution in its whole is faith-based always.

Did you look at that when you came to the conclusion on global warming? It’s well known that “evidence” was contrived. And the fact that you only look at credible evidence is what makes you a scientist and not much more. Other than those that work in the field of medicine research scientists don’t really carry much weight with me. All they have is speculation and theory, nothing concrete. I prefer the physical sciences, i.e. engineering, chemical and the such. At least they deal in reality.

Can one Christian tell why their creation myth is correct and not the Hindu’s or the ancient Greek’s or Buddhist’s? Now you can not use the Bible itself you need independent evidence.
Also please use the correct definition of Theory, in science theories have been tested, refined and proven.
The problem with the American Educational system is that their are to many Christians demanding that myths replace truths.
