The death of a 1o-month-old in North Carolina from a dog mauling this week marks the second time within the last two months this breed has killed an infant in the United States.
The Virginian-Pilot reports the incident occurred Tuesday in Hertford, N.C. where the boy, James Hudson, was reportedly in his grandmother’s care. She said although the mixed-breed dog never showed aggression toward the baby, it had previously bitten an older child.
WAVY.com reported that family and police identified the dog as a “pit bull mix” but the shelter officials called it a “Labrador-American Bulldog mix.”
The Virginian-Pilot describes grandmother Terry Atkinsson visibly distraught while sharing details of the events. Atkinsson said she and other children were in another room when the incident occurred. She said she tried to get the dog away from the infant but was hurt herself in the process.
WAVY TV-10 has the boy’s grandfather, Kent Bowser’s, account:
“There was screaming going on,” said Bowser. “I was kind of in shock myself. Even though I saw what was going on, I still couldn’t put together in my head what was going on.”
Bowser helped carry the baby to the front porch where family members tried to put bandages on the baby’s wounds.
“We prayed to God the whole time we was doing it.” said Bowser, fighting back tears.
Watch the report:
A neighbor of the family, James Thatch, told the Virginian-Pilot, that although the family is nice “that dog has got to go,” based on what he has seen of the dog’s actions on numerous accounts.
WAVY reports the family finding the dog — Copper — on the streets two years ago and adopting him. According to the Virginian-Pilot, following a standard 10-day waiting period Copper could be put down.

Bowser said he hopes other families can learn from this incident.
“If you have children and you have animals, make sure you totally understand the relationship you have with your animals and your pets,” Bowser said according to WAVY. “Go with your gut. If your gut tells you something ain’t right. Just go with your gut.”
A similar incident occurred in July, where a baby was killed by pit bull terriers in San Diego, Calif.
The CDC states that 4.7 million dog bite incidents happen each year and cites children age 5 to 9 as the most vulnerable. DogsBite.org states pit bulls killed 52 Americans from 2006 to 2008 and account for 59 percent of fatal attacks. Steven Hume for the Vancouver Sun points out in his editorial regarding recent dog attacks occurring in Canada recently that “it is the dog AND the owner” that are the problem, but he notes several statistics linking pit bulls with a tendency to be more violent.
(H/T: Daily Mail)
This story has been updated to reflect that the shelter in North Carolina identified the dog as Labrador-American bull dog mix, although the police and family members called it a pit bull mix.

We need to abort ignorance. Your ignorance proves that. I am sadden over the baby and will say a prayer tonight for the baby and the family. I will also say a prayer for all the pit bulls who have been horribly misjudged do to a few bad pit bulls that were raised mean or mistreated to make them that way.
I have owned many dogs and have seen dogs meaner than pit bulls. There is a dark force out there just trying to rid the world of pit bulls. What about Dobermans, Rottweilers, Shepard’s? All these dogs have killed too.
I have been worried about pit bulls for years because of the bad press they receive. But now, since last December. I am a happy owner of a pit bull. We adopted her from a foster home that received her from NY and sent her to VA, but the owners couldn’t keep her. They had lost their home. We are so blessed to have received her because she has brought so much joy in our home. Every where we take her, people comment on how great she is and that she doesn’t have a mean bone in her. The sad part is, that the adoption agency had to lie and write down that she was part pit bull because people are so scared to adopted them. Once I saw her I knew she was a pure bred Pit. I wouldn’t take her for an dog I have had in the past.
And just like my guns, come take it. If you dare.
So lets not be so ignorant. Smell your breath before you speak next time.

That only time you hear about a pit bull is when it has attacked. Just like your boss at work. You hear the bull crap if you screw up, but not the praise when you don’t.

In my opinion you have a warped sense of allegiance to a problem breed.
I have owned many large breed dogs, Shepherds, Dobs (my favorite, usually two). I have heard of some incidence with both but it is not a common thing. On the other hand pits are a common thread to problems and not a week goes by that (and maybe not a day) there is not a problem with a pit.
If I’m out walking and I see a pit unleashed the first thing I do is make sure the holster is unlatched and the grip is in my hand.

It does seem strange that the same people that have no problem with a fully formed baby being killed by an abortionist in incredibly painful ways, yet cringe at a dog attack on a child.
Abortion is murder. The female is killing another human with premeditation just because she desires it. The dog attack would be involuntary manslaughter at best.

Sep. 16, 2012 at 11:30pmExcellent observation! We need to ‘put down’ those who abort/kill babies.
I have a pit bull mix…lab/border/collie & pit bull. We got her at 6 weeks old for a house dog. She’s the most perfect dog…ever. I also have two Great Pyrenees as livestock guard dogs. These two Great Pyr females have taught our lab/pit/border mix how to guard against animal predators. All three of my dogs love people…and will lick you silly. All three female dogs are spade and licensed.
It’s the owners that are as much at fault…as the natural tendencies of the dog to be aggressive. I see a lot of pit bull dogs in Oregon. These dogs are purchased by aggressive people…and they intend for their dog to be aggressive. Folks used to raise Doberman Pinchers, Afghan Hounds, or German Sheperds for aggression,
We got our Lab/Collie/Pit mix as a little puppy because nobody wanted her. And she’s been taught to be sweet and love people (not cats, raccoons, opossums, cougars, or bears).
Special note: for some reason…dogs don’t like children. I’ve noticed that my grandkids move too fast towards a dog. It frightens the dogs. Kids do the same fast movement towards my goats and sheep…it scares the animals. Grownups usually know to move slow towards a new dog. And for some reason…children like to tease dogs. Maybe children don’t understand the dangers of the animals.

Sep. 17, 2012 at 8:45amFirst off I am a pitpull owner. Secondly, I was ignorant to this breed like a lot of you on this page. Several things hit me about this story. 1.) There was a history with this dog. The neighbor saw it. I bet the grandparents knew it. Yet when the grandparents leave a toddler alone with it, it is the dogs fault for being a dog. 2.) Seems that anything resembling a bulldog, mastiff or a bully breed is automatically deemed a “pitbull”. By no means am I saying that this kind of stuff doesn’t happen but in this case it is neglect on the part of the grandparents. As for what they were bred for, yes they were bred for fighting other dogs, not humans. The Pitbull was bred to be non-aggressive to humans. You can thank your Michael Vicks and wannabe Gangsters for your aggressive pitbulls. The story even stated the dog was found on the streets and then adopted out. They didn’t know the history of the dog and could have been a fighting dog before being discarded. Now with that said, I know the internet badasses as going to opine.

Sep. 14, 2012 at 9:29pmI am an animal lover and i dont think these dogs should be banned. That said, i totally agree with bubba. If you own a pit, you are 100% liable for what the dog does. I personally would never own one or a mixed of a pit and i currently have 4 mixed breed dogs and a pure border collie. I also cant stand it when i hear people blame it on the owners. ( its not the breed, its the owners) there was a pregnant woman in ca a couple of years ago that raised 2 pitts and championed for them, the poster child of a perfect pitt owner and one afternoon her huband came home from worked to find her mauled to death. If people want to own a pitt, go for it, but when you or someone else is dead, you should be held accountable. Sure all dogs bite, few maul you to death….big difference! Is it worth it?
Btw – pits are ghetto, low class dogs! Drive around an upper middle class or wealthy neighborhood and you will never see a pit. If someone claims to be rich and says they have a pit, they are BSing! You can take the dog out of the ghetto but you can never take the ghetto out of the dog and that is why people with money dont have them as pets! The dogs cant be trusted!

Sep. 14, 2012 at 10:29pmBy your logic, punishing the owner, that REQUIRES a victim. Laws, such as those in many countries, some US cities that severely restrict, or ban outright, pit bulls are much more logical. There’s NO reason to own such dogs. Any dog that will attack a carriage-horse by biting onto its face and dragging it to the ground so it can kill it better has absolutely NO place in a family environment. It does NOT matter how ‘nice’ your pit bull is, or that it never bit (you), any dog can ‘snap’. But when a pit bull does, it’s not a ‘bite and release’ type of dog. It hangs on, it tears flesh, it rends, it disfigures, it mutilates, it does NOT let go. You’d need an iron pipe or a shotgun to make it let go. Denver does it correctly…it banned them completely and kills those turned in.

Sep. 14, 2012 at 10:32pmI believe with the pits, indiscriminate breeding and breeding for “fight” dogs has just about ruined the breed. Once a dog that was considered a “baby sitter” the good has been bred out of them. They are an extremely strong dog that needs a job every day of it’s life, and a darn good good trainer to decide if it has traits that will eventually cause a problem. Perhaps a ban on them for awhile with only qualified good lines bred by pros could save this breed, but I almost think it’s to late, and that’s sad. Another dog destroyed by stupid dog fighters and more stupid people who think mean is cool.

Sep. 16, 2012 at 4:13pmYou are soooo right! We should ban any breed of dog that can injure or kill a human infant from being within a 5 mile radius of any school or home with a child. I can’t believe we still allow chihuahuas to be pets in people’s homes where they have children. Just last year I saw a news story in my city where a chihuahua ate an infant’s feet off while the parents slept in the next room. When they got up to finally see why the baby was crying, the vicious dog had already eaten most of the child’s feet.
End sarcasm…
You people are freaking lunatic morons! ALL ANIMALS ARE ANIMALS! You should not trust your infant with any animal ever. It isn’t the dog’s fault that it is an animal prone to animalistic behavior at any moment and you cannot prevent every such incident from happening. Hell, you can’t even trust your children with other human beings if you listen to the news on a regular basis! You all need to stop generalizing and letting fear control you and your vote. Sep. 16, 2012 at 4:21pm@ AZThunder, The only common denominator in your pitbull stories is YOU! Maybe YOU need to learn how to act around a dog and maybe then YOU wouldn’t get bit by them! You shouldn’t lean over a dog or get in their face unless you are the owner and you are actively asserting your dominance over the dog to gain its’ obedience. Even then this is risky though as the dog may want to try to assert dominance over you. After all, it is pack nature for a dog to occasionally challenge the alpha for dominance. That said, there is also another whole host of things that YOU could be doing wrong to cause dogs to bite you. Maybe you are just an arrogant rat with a dark soul and the dogs sense this and want to do God’s will and strike you down? That’s a big maybe and not one I put much stock in, but the moral is that you are the problem if YOU keep getting bit by different dogs.

Sep. 14, 2012 at 9:19pmThank goodness for you St. Francis. Finally a Blaze reader that performed the research. So many of these reported Pit Bull attacks are actually other breeds but the media has a bias towards Pit Bulls and it is easier to just blame the Pit Bull than look into the dog. There is also a media bias towards Pit Bulls, which this article clearly proves.

I have seen shelters advertise clearly lab/pit crosses as “lab mixes” when the puppies are so obviously lab/pits. The owner said it was a pit cross and I am sure when the owner took the dog to the vets that what they were told and i would trust what the owner said the dog was any day over a shelter! Sep. 17, 2012 at 12:38amWe have a lab/collie/pit mix. Had her since she was 6 weeks old (they gave her away too young). But I respect the fact that she is a potentially dangerous dog. She loves people and will lick you silly (see my earlier post). Did you know that a raccoons are actually little bears?…and will tear you up if frightened.
I have a dear friend that was walking through a public park with their little dog (Papillon). Then a woman with 3 pit bulls (all off-leash) came through the park…the 3 pit bulls attacked and nearly killed that little Papillion dog. It cost the owner of the little dog $1200 for vet bills. I wouldn’t let any of my dogs off-leash in a park.
My husband was bitten in the lower leg by a Chihuahua last week. Any dogs MAY bite. This little Chihuahua has never been trained to not bite. I’ve been bitten by a Doberman, cow dog (my fault), and a Dachshund.
In my many many years experience with dogs…most do NOT bite. And you folks are wrong about Pitt Bulls being naturally “bitey”. It depends on the genetics and the training (environment) of the dog…just like the genetic tendencies of people. Some people are aggressive…some are not.
The question should always be asked: “Why do you own a Pitt Bull dog?”.
We rescued our Lab/Collie/Pitt mix…and we wanted a house dog to bark when people arrived.
FYI: horses, snakes, chimps, birds, and donkeys are potentially dangerous. People kill…animals kill.
Wait…aren’t we all animals????

A dog of any breed can attack at any time, for any reason, so parents just be careful with your kids around especially larger breed dogs.

When will people realize that there is a gene flaw in the breed; one that cannot be trusted. I’ll admit that not all Pit Bulls are vicious, but what right do people have, as owners, to subject the rest of us to the possibility of harm just because their Pit Bull “would never hurt a fly”. How many times have we heard how “gentle” and “loving” someone’s Pit Bull was BEFORE they attacked someone. Lose the breed altogether, I say.

Sep. 14, 2012 at 9:14pmThe Blaze spends a lot of time talking about media bias. I am shocked that only one other Blaze reader picked up on the fact that the article itself refers to the dog as a mixed breed. There are so many dogs that, in the eyes of the ignorant, could resemble a Pit Bull if mixed with another breed. Yet, the article’s headline is that it was a Pit Bull. You see, it is not a Pit Bull if it is mixed. It is a mixed breed, period. The reason so many of you are afraid of Pit Bulls is because of irresponsible reporting like this. Pit Bulls, if raised correctly and responsibly, are great dogs. Owners of large breed dogs need to be extremely cautious if you have small children. All dogs are still animals with animal instinct. I happen to own a Pit Bull and he is great. I would not, however, leave him alone with any small child. That is not because he is a Pit Bull, but because he is a large dog and I understand that he is still an animal. I am so sick of people commenting on things they simply know nothing about. Come on Blaze readers, you are better than this. Read the story and do your own research. Please read the article below.

Tomorrow I am going to pick up a dog who has bitten every family member at least once, each time drawing blood. It bites the children if they are “too loud”. It bites the husband when he tries to touch his wife. It bites visitors. This dog has been doing this for 5 years. Luckily ythis is a 5 pound pomeranian and not a pit bull. My guess is the people are making the dog nuts. He will be evaluated to see if it is something physical or something in the current family make up. If he passes the evaluations he will fnd a new home. If not, he gets to go see Jesus. I am sorry but there are too many good dogs out there to put up with a biter like this dog or the pit bull who only bit someone “once”.

Sep. 16, 2012 at 1:11pmWow! Kathystone, THANK YOU,. A rescuer with common sense! I have been breeding, training, showing and rescuing dogs for close to 40 years. I am currently mostly retired due to health issues. It is a “breath of fresh air” to hear from a rescue person that doesn’t just blindly think every dog should be saved.
There were two immediate red flags in this story., First, they took this dog in off the street without knowing anything about the dog’s background. Second red flag, the dog had bitten before!
I also agree with those that have found fault with the sensationalism of the report. This was not a “pit bull”, it was a mixed breed. The “statistics” reported by the CDC are suspect at best and the CDC says that the numbers should not be used “identify specific breeds that are most likely to bite or kill, and thus is not appropriate for policy making decisions related to the topic….There is currently no accurate way to identify the number of dogs of a particular breed, and consequently no measure to determine which breeds are likely to bite or kill.” Most of the statistics from the CDC were actually numbers taken from media stories, not factual reports from experts such as veterinarians, shelters, and the like. Breed identification relied on newspapers and eyewitnesses of the dogs. Not experts. (as a btw, the majority of Animal Control workers are NOT experts by any means).

Who do you think you’re fooling with that “the breed is fine” nonsense?
There are over 150 breeds registered with the AKC, and out of that 150 breeds, ONE breed is responsible for 59% of fatalities. You can stack up all the anecdotal evidence you want to, but there are hundreds of your HUMAN brothers and sisters dead and buried because of that ONE BREED.
I GET that bad breeders and abusive masters contribute greatly to the problem, but that knowledge does NOTHING to bring back all those dead victims or help ease the pain of their families.
The problem isn’t JUST the breeders, it is the fact that the pit bull can (and will) bite through bone. They are very powerful and very aggressive, this means they are dangerous, in spite of your protestations.
There are plenty of other breeds which are just as loyal, strong, and even deadly as pit bulls, but they aren’t NEARLY as likely to flip out and kill innocent people.
I am really damn sick and tired of hearing people defend pit bulls after every human death. This has been going on for years, and the argument is always the same: Don’t blame the dogs! Well, dammit, you sure as hell can’t blame the infant!

You must, I say again you must make yourself knows as the alpa or the dog thinks it’s their job to protect you and become very aggressive.

Sep. 14, 2012 at 8:32pmI don’t know if it’s the breed or the type of SOME (perhaps most) of the folks that gravitate to the breed, but I don’t feel comfortable around those dogs at all.

Sep. 15, 2012 at 10:32amJas0707Boy, that is a pretty wild claim. Do you have some evidence? I wont say they are preferred by any race. There are certainly a lot of owners that are not model citizens and those are the ones that have no idea how to properly raise a dog. Those dogs become troubled. I would not fit into your pigeon hole of a typical Pit Bull owner. I got into the breed because so many people don’t understand the breed. There are so many Pits in the shelters and so many are put to death everyday it prompted me to want to try help the breed. I personally dont need a dog to compensate for anything. There are a lot of Pit Bull owners just like me.

Sep. 14, 2012 at 8:31pmWhy was an infant by a pit bull anyway?
Why is anyone by a pit bull? I know there are many of you who do love them and who say they are wonderful, loyal pets. I am glad you like them and that they are your pets. However, many of us are terrified of them and with good reason, actually.
Even the best of dogs, like the best of humans, can be challenged by the behavior on an infant.

Sep. 14, 2012 at 8:42pmPit bull is a term used now days to refer to dozens of different breeds. It would be like grouping all labs and retrievers as a single breed. American Pit bull, pit bull terrier, American staffordshire, all different breeds all considered pit bulls. So any statisics gathered is skewed.

Because OTHER dogs who attack kids usually leave them with a damned band-aid, not a caved-in skull and a coffin!

Sep. 15, 2012 at 7:43amIf any one thinks BSL is going to solve this problem your an idiot. Period. The dog is a “Pit Bull” The breed is…..non existent . It is a “label”, like pasta is to spaghetti. DNA the dog. Is it an American Bulldog, American Pit Bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Bull Terrier (like Spud McKindsey, Budweiser commercial), the heights range from 14-28 in high, weight from 25-120 lbs. Is it a mix? Of what? Lab, they go too! Oh I believe the Dogo Argentino, and Cane Corso amazing resemblance. They are with the Mastiff breed. Please look them up are not in the bully breed of the ignorant BSL law, and should not be, it is stupid you can not identify these dogs as Pit Bulls. This is nothing more then a smoke screen, “see they are gone” 100 thousand Pit Bull dogs dead. Oh, all except the Gang bangers dogs that are injected with “dog anger management” anti aggressive serum. They will continue to breed their sweet Pit Bulls and the world is a much safer place as these monsters emerge from the depths of HELLo underground rings. DUH!! Hey, I know….Lets go after stupid people that leave children unattended with ANY animal (dog), Wait….Did you read about the Pomeranian that mauled and killed a 4 day old infant? 4 years ago. What? Yep, stupid people AGAIN, left the child unattended with the dog. http://www.fiapbt.net/character.html If you enjoy reading truths…http://www.frasercoastchronicle.com.au/story/2012/09/14/the-bite-fac

Sep. 15, 2012 at 11:36pmRoxannandRuewatson don’t try to use with these people. They think Romney is somehow a freedom loving conservative, that gives you the level of critical thinking and intelligence here. I actually have 3 american pit bull terriers, ADBA registered, first generation from proven game lines. And one sleeps at the edge of each of my children’s beds. They are work dogs on our farm and well tempered pets too. They are from lines where human aggression was culled. They are treated well and have a job to do.
The authors of article’s like these should loose there license, they are as bad as the journalist that called the shooter in colorado a tea party member without understanding the facts.
I was raised around actual american pit bull terriers, been around real line dogs my whole life. And every responsible breeder and owner I knew would cull the animal if it ever showed signs of human aggressionl
