‘Spokesman’ for Anti-Muhammad Film Speaks Out on Islamist Protesters: ‘They’re Pre-Incited, They’re Pre-Programmed to Do This’

HEMET, Calif. (AP) — The public face for the anti-Muslim film inflaming the Middle East is not the filmmaker, but an insurance agent and Vietnam War veteran whose unabashed and outspoken hatred of radical Muslims has drawn the attention of civil libertarians, who say he’s a hate monger.

With the Coptic Christian filmmaker Nakoula Basseley Nakoula in hiding, film promoter Steve Klein has taken center stage in the unfolding international drama. He’s given a stream of interviews about the film and the man he says he knew only as Sam Bacile, and is using the attention to talk about his own political views.

Steve Klein Speaks Out About Innocence of Muslims, Protests

In this frame grab from a video made on Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2012, Steve Klein, an insurance agent and Christian activist involved in "Innocence of Muslims," a film denigrating Islam and the Prophet Muhammad that sparked outrage in the Middle East, speaks during an interview at his office in Hemet, Calif. Nakoula, who used Bacile spelled multiple ways as a pseudonym, contacted Klein months ago for advice about the limits of American free speech and asked for help vetting the movie’s script, Klein said in an interview with The Associated Press. The filmmaker asked the 61-year-old grandfather if he would act as a spokesman if the film “caught on,” and he agreed.

The role dovetailed with Klein’s relentless pursuit of radical Muslims in America, an activity he says he began after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. It took on more meaning in 2007, when his son, then a 27-year-old Army staff sergeant, was seriously injured in Iraq. Matthew Klein, a medic, was awarded the Bronze Star for Valor and a Purple Heart for injuries he suffered in the attack by a suicide bomber, according to the Army Human Resources Command.

“What do I get out of this? I get to die one of these days hoping my granddaughters and my grandsons will be safe from these monsters,” Klein said while sipping a beer on the front porch of his home.

He claimed to have visited “every mosque in California” and identified “500 to 750 of these people who are future suicide bombers and murderers.”

“Those are the guys I’m looking for. I’m not interested in mom and pop running a pizza store or running a smoky shop, a hookah shop,” he said.

Klein works with his wife as an insurance agent out of a small office on the second floor of a downtrodden business complex in Hemet, a small city in the shadows of the San Jacinto Mountains about 90 miles southeast of Los Angeles. He describes himself as a failed real estate investor who lost 20 properties in the recession. In 2002, he was the American Independent Party’s candidate for state insurance commissioner, receiving 2 percent of the vote.

The Southern Poverty Law Center says they have been tracking Klein for several years and have labeled two of the organizations he is affiliated with as hate groups.

Klein founded Courageous Christians United, which conducts protests outside abortion clinics, Mormon temples and mosques, and started Concerned Citizens for the First Amendment, which preaches against Muslims and publishes volumes of anti-Muslim propaganda that Klein distributes. He also has helped train paramilitary militias at the church of Kaweah near Three Rivers, about an hour southeast of Fresno, to prepare for what they believe is a coming holy war with Muslim sleeper cells, according to the law center.

“It’s extreme, ugly, violent rhetoric and the fact that he’s involved in that weapons training at that church, when you combine things like weapons training with hatred of a people, that’s very concerning to us. Those are the kind of things that lead to hate crimes,” said Heidi Beirich, director of the center’s Intelligence Project.

Beirich said her group has not linked Klein to any violence. A review of California court records shows only two minor traffic cases for Klein.

Klein is not affiliated with the church of Kaweah, Pastor Warren Mark Campbell said. He was invited to speak about Islam and hasn’t been back in more than a year.

Klein dismissed the concerns of his critics, angrily calling them “the wife-beaters and the pedophiles.”

“Those people are screwballs. End of comment,” he said.

What Klein has been eager to discuss in the days since his name became publicly linked to Nakoula is his role in the film’s creation and his own political views.

Klein said he recognized parallels between what he saw in Vietnam, where he says he infiltrated Viet Cong cells, and “Muslim sleeper cells” he began finding after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. He visits mosques and confronts young Muslim men who “dress up like Osama bin Laden and Yasser Arafat.”

Steve Klein Speaks Out About Innocence of Muslims, Protests

Palestinians protest against the movie, "Innocence of Muslims," near the United Nations office in Gaza City, Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2012. Muslim anger over perceived Western insults to Islam has exploded several times, most recently in Tuesday's attacks against U.S. diplomatic posts in the Middle East in which U.S. ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens and three other Americans were killed. The banner reads in Arabic "you are more dear than my father and mother my beloved prophet Mohammed." Credit: AP

Military records obtained by the AP from the National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis show he served in the Marine Corps from 1968 to 1977 on active duty and received a service star for participating in the campaign in Vietnam. He also received a good conduct medal and a combat action medal before retiring in 1980 with the rank of first lieutenant.

“I’m kind of an unsophisticated James Bond operative. I want to piss this guy off, I want to find out, Why does he want to kill me?” he said. “Why does he want to capture my daughter and granddaughter and rape them? Why does this guy want to act this way?”

That work indirectly led him to his affiliation with Nakoula, an Egyptian Christian living outside Los Angeles, who contacted him about making an anti-Muslim movie.

Klein reviewed the script and then the man disappeared, only to resurface months later with a complete film ready to show at a movie theater in Hollywood.

The filmmaker’s idea was to give the film a title that would draw in “hardcore Muslims” and then trick them into watching a movie that bashed Islam in the hopes that they would give up their faith, Klein said.

Nakoula papered Southern California mosques with flyers about the “Innocence of Muslims,” but not one ticket was sold, said Klein, who said Nakoula was crushed.

The AP has tried without success to find a copy of the entire film.

Later, a 14-minute trailer showed up on YouTube and has been blamed for inflaming mobs that attacked U.S. missions in Egypt and Libya this week as well as U.S. Embassy in Yemen on Thursday. U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens was one of four Americans killed Tuesday in an attack in Libya.

Klein said he had no regrets about participating in the movie’s creation.

“Do I have blood on my hands? No. Did I kill this guy? No,” he said. “Do I feel guilty that these people were incited? Guess what? I didn’t incite them. They’re pre-incited, they’re pre-programmed to do this.”

I truly believe there are sleeper cells in the US. Only a fool would not.

What I am having trouble with is this: ” Klein said he recognized parallels between what he saw in Vietnam, where he says he infiltrated Viet Cong cells.”

As a Vietnam vet, I seriously doubt he “infitrated” VC cells. He may have developed Vietnamese sources or agents who infiltrated VC cells. It is close to impossible for a Caucasian to infiltrate a VC cell.

Hate to ask a silly question. Can someone tell me, with these sickening murderous acts committed against the US Consulate personnel in Libya and further associated violence and rioting there and abroad, were/are these the reactions of Extreme Islamist, Moderately Extreme, Extremely Moderate, Mild, Lukewarm, partly, not very much, or…???

I mean no offense if this question may seem to also mock the poor US souls (in Libya) murdered by such evil people. If it has, I sincerely apologize.

And can someone please tell me, having read headline (at Raiders News Update website), “Stop provoking Muslims, Says Vatican”, is that an attempt at humour (by the Vatican) or a demand to bow down and be subservient to this political militaristic fascistic national-socialistic order (Islam)?

And, If someone says Islam and Christianity and Judaism all believe in the same god…. you might fool plenty of others.

I have an old (Australian) newspaper cartoon clipping – it depicts
caricatures of Madonna (the ‘entertainer’ of recent times) crucified on a cross (as part of her “Confessions Tour”) and standing nearby her is mufti-type looking person talking with a bishop/cardinal-type looking figure and the mufti exclaims, “Boycott?…Haven’t you guys heard of Jihad?”

Perilous times. Beginning of sorrows has been for some time.

God bless Australia. God Bless USA. God Bless Israel.

    Maranatha.

The Vatican says to “Stop provoking Muslims.” I say this to the Vatican: “RENOUNCE your church’s murderous past.” The Roman Catholic Church has murdered, and tortured more innocent christians in this world’s history, and this church has yet to officially renounce the atrocities of the Dark Ages, and the Inquisition. Renounce your idolatry, abortions by your own nuns, and the pedophiles that haunt your pulpits. Simply put….”Pull the beam out of your own eye”……Just sayin.

No doubt, Hanner, that the Vatican has a lot to answer for with regard to its own history and having pursued its own dogma and doctrines (of which most are in direct contradiction to the Gospel and teachings of Jesus). Obviously, the Vatican and its hierarchy have had their wicked moments.
There other so-called Christian sects who are also wolves in sheep’s clothing. Personally, I believe some are truly false and have been organized to provide fuel to those who wish to ridicule God/Jesus and believers, with the purpose to drag people away from the truth of God the Father and Jesus Christ. I choose to have a personal relationship with the Creator and Saviour. God/Yahweh is not a wooden idol to me, He is my living Father in heaven. He has provided plenty of warnings about events that have been, are current, and are about to happen.

You answered my questions by refuting them, turning the issue to the Vatican’s own diabolical actions. Certainly, the Vatican has had some very dark history, only a fool or uninformed person could deny that. What about the nearly 1400 years of Jihad, which has never ceased since the 7th Century? Do you condone the actions of those who crucified Egyptian Copts as reported recently? Do you applaud the 100 or so Indonesians who protested outside US Embassy in Jakarta, chanting “We are all Osama Bin laden” on the 2012 anniversary 911 attacks?
Jesus also said, “Those who live by the sword shall die by the sword.”

As a Christian, I find the short excerpt of the film extremely offensive and in fact clicked off before the end. I can understand how offensive it must be to all Muslims. However, most Muslims in the Middle East know nothing of the freedom of speech that exists in America so they fall prey to the extremists who are ever vigilant for an excuse to scream, “America, The Great Satan, is blaspheming our religion” and declare a ‘Jihad’ against this country instead of the slime who made the film and the headline hound who broadcast it to Egypt.

Throughout history the Jewish people have shouldered most of the world’s excuses for violence and sins. This person who made the film is an Egyptian Christian coward who layed this at the door of the Jews first, then America second. Yet, he is still protected by the First Amendment as he should be but, he should take responsibility for his work or next time write anoymously. I do not believe anyone should pass any information on where he lives ( however; he should move, quickly) because he is right in what he believes and as most Americans believe. The American people need to hear the truth, understand the Islamic religion and the violence it perpetuates. I believe that films should have been made long ago to inform the American people of the Evil that is in our mist. One day soon, people not of the Islamic belief will hav’to band together to fight the Evil that is coming for us. All parents who have not done so, need to take their children hunting, camping and fishing to teach them how to survive what is coming. Am…Israel Shalom to All!

And to quit funding Egypt Libya and the others. This has got to stop! What is wrong with confronting radical muslims at mosques in this country? The guy is brave and probably better at rooting them out then any government agency who turns their back on this problem. This movie is crudely put together but it gets the point across. If I had the money I would base a movie totally on the quran because most of these Muslims can not read, this is one reason why they act in this violent manner.

Amen brother! Read the quran, then tell me who the bad guys are. It’s all about subjugation and murder. There are two worlds in Islam…Islam, and “The War”. It states quite clearly that those who do not believe in allah are to be killed. It also states clearly that there is no point to conversion. Allah has hardened their hearts and deafened their ears to his message. There has never been a more bigoted, narrow-minded and violent dogma than islam. This film and this man are simply excuses for it. They are not and possibly never will be our friends.

Why is it that anyone who speaks against Islam and what it stands for, is looked upon as a person of hate? This country had better wake up. I see censorship coming out of this. Loss of the First Amendment.

Southern Poverty Law Center like many cause celebs has been for years now on the Politically Correct path..which is censorship or how to control dissent and opinion. They are to me no different than the Homosexual groups labeling others who disagree with them. Same with the womens groups and the “War on Women.” More labeling. Same with Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson…they are all censors trying to control, label, and or shame opposition….while stroking the faithful.

The same thing with this administration…PC…”Tax breaks for the Rich.” More labeling when no law has been broken. Finding, creating in the media, and labeling these new bad guys they just created.
But nothing said about the religion which authorizes such violent conduct.

Islam has a track record of killing and slaughtering people around the world. I do not hear the Southern Poverty Law Center criticizing them. Dissent against Islam…Honor killings and such.

This is built into the religion for those who want to be follow this path.

Get ready for more of this nonsense and then blaming someone else….with more PC.

Well said, ORANGETOM1999. In Australia, states had “Racial Vilification Bill (including religion etc)” introduced as legislation soon after September 11 attacks. Upon the 911 NY attacks, Two pastors (Catch The Fire Ministries) had provided lectures, to its church patrons, on the history of Islam and what the koran says. They were former Pakistan citizens and very well versed in the Koran. They wanted to provide insight to their brethren on the history of Islam and the koran, as most Australians were fairly uninformed about Islam/muslims until 911 brought them further into the limelight (never mind the Munich games, plane hijackings, and other terror acts throughout 70s, 80s, before and after). The pastors would continually emphasize the duty of the Christian to love these people during their presentations. Apparently, some Australian converts to Islam resided in audience (on behalf of their middle-eastern muftis) to monitor/observe what was presented. Despite the pastors constant reminders as Christians “to love these people”, the converts leaders decided that they should have the pastors arrested and convicted for inciting hatred and violence against muslims. Obviously, something which could not be further from the truth. Criminal Court threw case out, however, the muslims were awarded $1million in Equal Employment Opportunity tribunal (and were represented by Roman Catholic C legals!). Hazardous to discuss the truth these days.
