A controversial American flag bearing the image of President Barack Obama was quietly removed from a Texas classroom and dismissed by the school district as bad flag etiquette with no political undertones.
Diane Boyett, communications director for the Victoria Independent School District in southeast Texas, estimated the flag was up for about a week at Stroman Middle School before the principal became aware of it and took it down Thursday.
“It was removed as soon as the principal got the first email about it, she went to the classroom, she looked and she removed it,” Boyett told TheBlaze Friday afternoon.
She said the flag was displayed in a disciplinary classroom reserved for in-school suspensions and used by “very few students.” She said she didn’t know how many students saw it, but estimated the number would be very low given the recent start of the school year.
Boyett said the school district received six emails in total complaining about the flag, most of which seemed to be copied in whole or in part from the same form letter and didn’t have valid email addresses to respond to.
U.S. flag code states the flag must never bear “any mark, insignia, letter, word, figure, design, picture, or drawing of any nature.”
“The teacher was thinking it was a commemorative piece for the inauguration for the president,” Boyett said. “[She meant] absolutely meant no disrespect.”
Asked whether displaying such an image of the president was inappropriate at a public school, Boyett said no.
“I don’t believe that having a picture of the president of the United States is political,” she said, just as putting up images of George Washington or John F. Kennedy would not be political.
Boyett said Stroman Middle School plans to use the incident to teach students about proper flag etiquette.
“We’re going to take this as a teaching tool and the students at the school on Monday will be receiving a lesson on flag code, flag respect and what the flag actually means,” she said. “We try to turn everything into a teaching opportunity.”

Sep. 14, 2012 at 6:33pmThis is an outrage on two counts: 1) it is utterly disrespectful of the flag (and violates the code), and 2) as a public servant, the teacher has no right to campaign in the classroom. She should be dismissed and that flag should be destroyed.

And it is political, blatently so, and the asshat ‘teacher’ knows it; the placing of bobo’s mug on a flag is an attempt to get away with posting something political by giving the excuse that since it is on the U.S. flag (disgracefully so) that it is actually patriotic, and non-political. I remember pictures of George Bush Sr in the classroom in grade school. That said, the crap in this school was very wrong. It was obviously political in nature and disrespect for the flag. Everyone in this is disrespecting the flag. These days there are a lot of people disrespecting the flag but when it is led by the President, The democratic party, The Schools, and Teachers this is horrible. The President has consistently done things that disrespect the flag. He and his people have placed it on the incorrect side and laid it on the ground for two. The president needs to learn how to properly treat the flag of the country he lives in.

A picture of the president is fine in any institution as long as it is an official picture and does not have reference material from the political campaign.
The symbol shown next to Obama had on the flag is a political symbol and not an officially federally recognized symbol to the position of the office of the president of The United States.
As there are always a number in any social group that may not respect the person in office, the photo is also a representation of the office itself and it garners a certain respect in regards to the nation on a whole.

2. It is a campaign flag (note the campaign ensignia not the Presidential Seal) and therefore IS inapropriate int he class unless it os in a discussion of politics and the other candidate is represented.

This was an act of displaying a desecrated flag in a school classroom and this is an issue of indoctrination, due to the fact that Mrs. Shelton is an Obama supporter…
This flag was altered to include and image of President Barack Obama. This is, in fact, an infringement on Federal Flag Code: Public Law 94-344 Section 4(g). Which states: “The flag should never have placed upon it, nor on any part of it, nor attached to it any mark, insignia, letter, word, figure, design, picture, or drawing of any nature.”
How do I know this??? I am one of the Patriots that was behind this, in order to get the flag down off of the door in this classroom…I was advised by a parent of this situation and We The People took it upon ourselves to put the word out to the world..
