The Chicago Teachers Union is entering its second week of striking in what has become a very public spat with Democratic Chicago Mayor and former White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel. The strike was discussed by the “Real News” panel last week as possibly the culmination of longstanding tensions in the Democratic Party between traditional Big Labor roots and “New Democrats.” As the strike has continued for a second week, increased coverage has put the spotlight on what each side is really fighting over at the expense of time for many inner-city and at risk kids who suffer more and more  each day out of the classroom
Mark Mix, President of the National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation, joined Monday’s show to discuss the fallout in Chicago and how the dispute compares to similar high-profile Big Labor and government fights we’ve seen in recent years where Republican legislators were in the hot seat now experience by Emanuel.

Sep. 18, 2012 at 8:06pmDoes anyone find it ironic that the teachers couldn’t come back to work on Monday because they “needed more time to review the offer”…maybe they should have passed it to see what was in it like with Obamacare!

Sep. 17, 2012 at 11:48pmMaybe the panel should consider this as another way for big government to get involved in local issues. These reform policies are all basically the same across the country.

Sep. 17, 2012 at 9:41pmTo nite on Real News, You pretty much lumpedall teachers together “Teacher Unions”. Please don’t just assume that all teachers agree with the way the Chicago Teachers Union is handling this strike. PLease don’t lump all teachers together that all they want is more, more, more.
Remember, teachers today spend more time with our children in a day than thier parents do, now times, weeks, months and years. Not all teachers just follow blindly. As the old saying goes, “a few bad apples ruin the whole bushel”. As long as there in tenure, you are going to have the bad apples, whining that they don’t want to be evaluated the way they are evaluated. Again, NOT all teachers feel this way. Those that don’twant to be evaluated then there is a problnm with the way they run their classrooms, or Don’t run thier classrooms.Teachers can’t teach the basics anymore. They have to teach to the state and federal mandated tests to prove that our children can compete in the world. When they have to spend most of thier teaching hours teaching to these tests, there is no time left for the 3 R’s. It’s also sad that teachers, have to join their states Teachert’s Union. They don’t have a choice.
So please just don’t lump ALL teachers in your overall thoughts of the “teacher’s Unions”. There are a great many more than you could imagine that don’t agree with the “Teacher Unions”.

Sep. 17, 2012 at 9:21pmObama needs all of this disruption and disorder. Good to distract the voters from his abysmal record for the past 3 1/2 years . AND he needs to make sure his buddies in the Chicago teachers’ union get more ” stuff.” Pay back time .
