Biden Attacks Romney for Using $250K Figure to Define Middle Class — But Isn’t That the Same Figure Dems Use?

Vice President Joe Biden during a campaign stop in Burlington, Iowa, criticized Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney for saying he wanted to help middle class Americans in the $250,000 range and below.

Romney’s comments came last week during an on interview on ABC’s “Good Morning America.”

“No one can say my plan is going to raise taxes on middle-income people, because principle number one is (to) keep the burden down on middle-income taxpayers,” Romney told host George Stephanopoulos.

“Is $100,000 middle income?” Stephanopoulos asked.

“No, middle income is $200,000 to $250,000 and less,” Romney responded.

Biden thought this was just too much.

“He thinks the middle class is $200,000 to $250,000. Whoa! Whoa!” Biden said much to the crowd’s amusement. “Don’t you all wish you were in that middle class? Whoa!”

“He’s totally out of touch with the reality of what ordinary Americans deal with every day,” Biden continued. “He does not get it. He does not understand.”

But, you see, there’s something we don’t understand. Remember all that stuff about extending the Bush-era tax cuts for the middle class? Do you remember who President Barack Obama said he wanted to extend those middle class tax breaks for?

Oh, that’s right: People in the $250,000 range and below.

“I believe it is time to let the tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans, folks like myself, to expire,” the president said in July. “Anyone making over $250,000 a year should go back to the income tax rates we were paying under Bill Clinton.”

“Pass a bill extending the tax cuts for the middle class, I will sign it tomorrow,” he added.

Does Biden really not remember any of this?

And the president isn’t alone when he uses the $250,000 figure when talking about the middle class.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has gone on the record saying he sees no problem with this number and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) in August also said the limit should be $250,000.

But you better believe the Obama campaign is going to use this to further the Romney is out-of-touch narrative.

“As the vice president made clear in his remarks today, Mitt Romney’s proposals are out-of-touch — he would voucherize Medicare, and pay for new tax cuts for the wealthy by hiking them on the middle class,” a campaign aide told the Huffington Post in a statement.

“While President Obama is fighting for middle class families and has cut their taxes every year he’s been in office, nonpartisan studies have made clear that Mitt Romney’s tax breaks for millionaires and billionaires come from only one place — the pockets of middle class families. That’s the clear choice in this election,” the statement added.

There is NO SUCH THING AS CLASS TAX PEOPLE! Tax the rich they raise prices. Tax the middle class and middle class businesses raise prices and reduce buying products from the rich. Tax the poor and this reduces them from buying products from small business and the rich. ALL TAXES AFFECT THE PRIVATE SECTOR! IT IS ALL TRANSFER OF WEALTH TO GOVERMENT! Wake up America! Do the Math! ROMNEY AND OBAMA ARE BOTH WRONG!

If tax breaks for the rich must come out of the “pockets of middle class families,” it’s only because Obama’s government needs too much money, spends too much money, wastes too much money, wants even more money, and refuses to solve its spending problem. If the middle class is getting hurt, the finger should be pointed directly at Obama’s incompetence and greed for power, not citizens who happen to be wealthy, productive, successful, and the main creators of jobs in this country.

Biden just keeps on giving to show just how much of an idiot he is. There are multiple sound bites of Plugs Bite-Me and Oblamo using the 250K figure as the top of the middle class.

Oblamo and Bite’Me have said more than once that Obama wants to save the middle class. He wont raise taxes on those who make 250K or less. That’s the ceiling these two have been using since 2008.

The two Buffoons also used the 250K ceiling as part of the Unconstitutional Obamacare.

Romney should have a fun time throwing this into Plugs face. You would think Oblamo would have put the “Ropes and Chains” on Biden speaking in public years ago.

“I believe it is time to let the tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans” ah beckett you should have gone to class more when you took the logic course. Identifying the wealthiest Americans as the group above $250,000 is not the same thing as saying the individual making $249,000 is middle class. The PRESIDENT utilizes that figure to indicate wealthiest Americans due to their representative percentage of the population. The middle class range as a percentage of Americans would extend way below that.

JCROOK, Put something into perspective. If you make $250K a year in New York City, what economic class would you consider yourself to be? Same goes for Boston, LA, Chicago. Now, if you lived in Birmingham, AL you might just be considered wealthy, but not by much. Drive two hours east and that same amount does not go as far in Atlanta. You are as silly as 0bama to pull a number out of the air and say that we are coming after you. If you listen to 0bama’s speeches, his reference that the wealthy needs to pay their fair share. He is not referring to fill the nations money coffers. He says that it is “the right thing to do.” His view of social justice to knock some wealthy off his perceived pedestal.
The next idiotic thing 0bama says out loud and you and his other minions rally around him for this with no thought in your mind. He screams that the millionaires and billionaires must pay their fair share, then he says anybody making $250K a year needs a tax increase. Are you really that blood thirsty to destroy those who keep this country alive by employing the few they can afford in this economic climate? Okay, keep screaming for bloody murder of that golden goose, then see how long you can make it in your life.

Biden doesn’t get it, doesn’t he know that soon due to the FED completely destroying our currency that $250,000/yr will be the poverty level? They use these arbitrary numbers to describe “fair” and “middle class” but pay no attention to the fact that just 20 years ago those numbers were considerably more affluent. What will be fair tomorrow, or the next day? These people meddle and manipulate things that they either know nothing of or, worse yet, know everything about and are using it to acquire more power. That comes down to one of two possibilities, evil or stupid…or in the case of the current administration, evil AND stupid.

I still have to giggle at 0bama though. He gets on his high horse during his class warfare speeches screaming that it is time for millionaires and billionaires to finally pay their fair share. Then he wants the tax increases to hit those making $200,000 to $250,000! And, his crowds smell the blood in the air and hoot and holler for him to take these wealthy people down. It’s not tax money that he necessarily wants, its his version of social justice to hit the wealthy. Killing the goose that lays the golden egg will have dire consequences for these fools and tools.

Marginal Revolutions (dotcom) linked to an article in the Spanish El Pais newspaper. They said what was wrong with Spain was that it was too decentralized & the politicians talk a good game whatever the party, but what they are is an extractive elite. It is like a game of 2 card monty as explained by Mike Savage. When one part is out of power, some of their players are benched in the think tanks, government staff, etc.

It doesn’t matter what the tax rate is because these cliques will look out for one another & just raise the amount of pay until they are able to buy what they want.

If Bill Clinton makers $250k a year & pays a 75% marginal tax rate & affords what he wants no sweat. If the top marginal rate is raised to 99.9%, then Clinton’s buds will make sure he earns 350k or more & he still affords what he wants.

In the meantime Clinton can run around saying RAISE MY TAXES.

WALKABOUT, Thanks not only for your further input, but also the link. Funny, but Clinton did run around saying taxes should be raised for him and others like him back when he was in office. Of course, not until sometime in his second term when he had become a millionaire and not simply the recipient of a single meager salary. 0bama is worse, he will put himself and cronies into a special class who will pay lower taxes. Jeffery Immelt comes to mind right away. Not to mention all of those special interest groups, businesses, and individuals who were cooperative during the fight for 0bamacare, where he waved his magic wand and all was fine in fairy tale land. To many it is nice to know the king so well.

@Walkabout, you bring up an interesting point, which I think goes to the root of our problems. Politicians have become less and less connected to normal people, and to their original responsibility. The original intent of their ‘public service’ was just that – service, not a means to gather power and wealth. They most definitely were not meant to create a system that protects them, allows them to vote for their own raises, gives them benefits that no one else in the country has access to…and the list goes on and on. The advantages they reap from their so-called ‘service’ are the incentive to do anything to stay in office, and stay connected to the honeypot. It is this element that causes corruption and a win-at-any-cost attitude. It’s simple job protection – like a massive union that only they control.

Every time Bernanke turns on “the printer” we are all see our taxes increase. Milk in our area has gone up 40% in the past 3 years; steak has increased 50% in our area, gasoline doubled. 8% on a grocery bill of $100 is much less than the tax on $150. Not to mention the increase in production costs that gets built in to the price on the shelves, but never seems to get into cost of living increases as far as wages/salaries are concerned.
