Your ears are about to thank you.
A video posted on YouTube Sunday could be the best one you see all week. It shows what is described as a “South-East Asian girl” standing in front of a karaoke machine inside a department store and belting Whitney Houston’s iconic “I Will Always Love You.” And when we say “belting,” what we really mean is hitting every note and blowing the store — and the the world — away.
In fact, the video has even made its way to RyanSeacrest.com, where it received high praise. See why below (and be sure to turn the volume up to really give your ears an experience):
It’s unclear who the girl is and where the video was taken. The channel belongs to a user called “therealsingapore.” I’ve emailed family that lives in Singapore to try and confirm if such a store — with rampant English on the items for sale — is common.
For what it’s worth, the video description contains this disclaimer: “Her friend has recorded this video and has given us full permission to reproduce it. The singer of course was absolutely delighted that we put her video on our website and youtube.”
We’ll update with any information. For now, just watch the video again.
UPDATE:
My wife’s aunt, who lives in Singapore, got back to me and offers some context. Mainly, I was wondering if such an Americanized store could exist in Singapore, where the video seems to be from (the question could help confirm the video’s location).
“Yes, there are stores similar to Walmart in Singapore,” Aunt Andrea told me after I asked about the store in the video appearing comparable to the retail giant in the U.S. “There is one called Giant that is a Malaysian based chain. We call it the Malaysian Walmart. There is also a French chain called Carrefour. This video actually looks like a Giant. And someone randomly stepping up to do karaoke in Asia is not surprising at all.”
So does that explain the English plastered all over in the background? Kind of.
“As for the English, Singapore was originally a British colony and English is the language of business and parliament,” she explains. “There are older Singaporeans who do not speak much English but there is no need to speak Mandarin there at all. Everyone speaks some English and all signs are in English. There are actually four main languages in Singapore, English, Malay, Mandarin and Tamil. Depending on what part of town you’re in, you’ll see/hear the different languages but there will always be English.”
As for the girl, Aunt Andrea does have a theory. “This girl does appear to be Filipino,” she says. “Typically they are in Singapore as domestic helpers (maids). There is a good chance she is a maid and it’s a Sunday (her day off) and she’s using her talent publicly to try to get noticed. It seems to have worked. I pray she catches a break. That voice doesn’t need to be stuck inside cleaning a house forever.”
Still, she admits “there are Singaporeans who are Filipino,” so the theory isn’t ironclad.
Either way, the perspective from someone who might live in the same area is interesting.
Update II:
It appears we might have an identity for the anonymous singer in the video: Zendee Rose Tenerefe from the Philippines. GMANetwork.com explains:
Zendee Rose Tenerefe, the ‘random girl’ who was spotted doing a mind-blowing performance of the song “And I‘m Telling You” outside an appliance store in a mall said she was in talks with the “Ellen DeGeneres” television show in the United States for a possible guest appearance.
[...]
Recently, she appeared in Party Pilipinas where she performed with Kapuso Stars Rachelle Ann Go, Maricris Garcia and Jonalyn Viray.
She first gained attention when a stranger who was capturing her mall performance of “And I’m Telling You” on video uploaded it on YouTube.
The video which showed Tenerefe wearing simple attire and a red bag while singing became viral.
A girl by that name does have a YouTube channel and certainly looks like the girl in the first video. You can compare the voice with another posted video from that channel, below:
Same girl?
Thanks to Blaze reader David for sending along the information.
UPDATE III:
Most Watched Today seems to think it’s Zendee Rose Tenerefe, too. In fact, if you were confused as to why the second update mentioned the song being “And I’m Telling You,” that makes two of us. But then Most Watched Today posted a second video of Tenerefe singing the iconic R&B hit — and you’ll be as floored as you were with the first video:
Most Watched Today says Tenerefe is 21-years-old and “was spotted singing on a store’s karaoke machine at the SM Mall of Asia located in Pasay City, Metro Manila in the Phillipines.”
According to the site, the “I Will Always Love You” is the most recent video and is the result of the young woman returning to the location “that made her famous” for another performance.

Sep. 18, 2012 at 8:58amShe’s good, but to be honest, thats not such a big deal…
Almost ALL Asian women have the voices of angels…. The Japanese and Chinese in particular have languages that “train” the voice.
Thus why Karaoke is so popular in Asia. If you go over seas, you will find that about 80 – 90% of their population can sing so well that they could make careers here in the U.S. easily if they could speak clear English…
I have met many Asian women that sing this well, if not better.. Its not really that uncommon…
But she DID do a good job… Better than just about any American….

Sep. 18, 2012 at 10:24amAgreed Jimbo… There ARE exceptions…. Yoko being the most notable….
And when I said they have the voices of angels, Most Asian women can hit notes that many American professionals cannot hit, and they require NO voice training to do so…. There are many over-seas that still take voice lessons, but if you take an Un-trained Asian singer, and compare them to even a moderately trained American singer… The American will get left in the dust NEARLY every time…
Sure there are always exceptions… Some Americans are can be talented with little to no training, however the ratio of Talented Asian singers to American ones blows us away… I can’t say I like it, but its the truth… Go over seas some time, and you will be blown away…

Sep. 18, 2012 at 10:43amI lived in Japan for many years, and I can tell you in my experience Asian woman can not sing whatsoever, granted you will have a few exceptions. While Asian women in the states can do it, the languages of Chinese and Japanese actually limits their capabilities.
(I am fluent Japanese and Chinese, and know English very well, I have experiences all over Japan for a number of years. The one thing that stuck out to me during my time is the pure lack of singing talent.)

Whether she’s trained or not, her voice is natural and graceful. A rare combination and damn near extinct these days. Sounds like choral singing or training to me. Maybe she sings in her church, where the best training usually takes place. Great resonance.

Sep. 18, 2012 at 12:12pmAre they absolutely sure the young lady isn’t lip synching? In watching the video there are moments where the voice and her mouth just don’t seem to add up. There is a specific moment between 2:20 and 2:25 where the young woman’s teeth are very visable and she appears in that moment to have largely closed her mouth but the voice continues at a rythm that doesn’t add up with what should be a lack of air movement and tone from her mouth.
Of course I am most likely off my rocker. I so hope I’m wrong because it is a breath-takingly beautiful rendition and I would love to see the young lady succeed.

Sep. 18, 2012 at 1:53pmIt was a lip sync.
Microphone pulls away (style) but voice volume does not change.
Notice the background noise of people. High pitch TREBLE ONLY. Yet the music is filled with BASS? I don’t think so. That’s a prerecorded karaoke track added in Final CUt Pro. Then the vocal performance, also recorded in a STUDIO is added in. Then the canned conversations of 100′s of people in the background next. Then mix this with when she really DOES talk on the microphone in the store, at the end, and you will notice that her voice is treble like with NO reverb anymore. Its a PHONY. BUSTED.

What you are saying is very possible. It is amazing what we can do recording-wise with the technology available today. Regardless, if that’s her voice (overdubbed or not), she is quite good. I believe if it is her own voice, she has definitely been working on singing for a while… likely had professional instruction. This wasn’t some spontaneous, candid fluke.

That’s not to say that all your points are poor…it may be planned, with a tripod mounted video cam and maybe even pre-recorded. Irrespective, I am pretty certain she IS that great based on all three videos. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m gonna see if I can find any of her other covers on youtube.

Almost all young women in Singapore are shy and retiring but I have been to karaoke restaruants and been coerced into belting out a tune to the great amusement of my Singaporan co-workers.
As far as I am concerned this young lady needs to be found and she should start a music career as a replacement to Whitney’s beautiful voice. To me nothing is more pleasurable than listening to such range and fluidity. She has a gift and viola let us find her and get some of that ear candy.

How would you even have a music industry in the Orient if 90% can sing better than Elvis, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, etc? How can they even be entertained then if their everyday average Joe is better than the best the rest of the world has to offer?

Sep. 19, 2012 at 6:55pm“…the ratio of Talented Asian singers to American ones blows us away.”
These days Americans are far too busy killing themselves in trying pay their ‘debt’ to the biggest ‘company store’ in human history, the United States government.
Once Americans (conservatives very much included) reject the notion of government as caretaker and savior we can get back to actually living life again, i.e., enjoying the finer things in life, like the arts.
If you haven’t noticed, there is much less appreciation for real talent and accomplishment in the US of late. These are to be envied, discounted, or simply ignored, but not admired.
Fear, uncertainty, and cynicism rule the American day in 2012.
This is but one example of collectivism’s effect on the very fragile things that make America exceptional. The best that we have to offer/enjoy will be the first to go in this new America.
There is a huge price to pay for allowing tyranny to rise. The opportunity cost is staggering to consider.

They also used a TRIPOD to hold the camera, who does that for a supposed “spontaneous” random event? What a lie. This video is a promotion. It is made to LOOK like it was random, but the audio tracks give it all away. High fidelity BASS in the audio, thats a prerecorded track added in FCP, and the vocal performance had REVERB. When the editor brings up the audio of the woman saying “sing one more?” that audio did NOT have reverb. Untrained ears don’t hear or notice any of these things. Think how easy it would be to fool people on really important things with a video, if they can be fooled on these easy things…
