Justin Bieber is a pop phenomenon who has millions of adoring fans. But from time-to-time, the popular 18-year-0ld performer dips his toes into the sociopolitical world, commenting on controversial issues of importance like abortion and health care. This week, Bieber’s mother, Pattie Mallette, is following in her son’s footsteps.

Rather than tackling issues in a political framework, Mallette is speaking out about her personal experience with sexual abuse, depression and the prospects of abortion. In an interview with “Today” that will air this week, she explains why she opted not to have an abortion and to keep her son.
At the age of 17, Mallette became pregnant with Bieber and was encouraged to have an abortion, but that prospect wasn’t palatable to her, she explained.
“I just knew I couldn’t. I just knew I couldn’t. I just know I had to keep him,” she explained. “And, do the best. I — you know, I didn’t know how I was going to do it. But I just knew that I couldn’t — I couldn’t abort. I had to do my best. I had to see what I could do. And I was determined to do whatever it took.”

Prior to her pregnancy, Mallette faced a variety of serious issues that threatened to destroy her life. Sexual abuse was the catalyst for many of the challenges she faced.
“I’ve learned it’s normal and natural for anybody who’s been through sexual abuse to carry that shame and that blame and feel like there’s something wrong with you,” she told “Today’s” Kathie Lee Gifford. “So I definitely carried that.”
This shame had potentially life-threatening consequences, as Mallette detailed how she once attempted to take her own life — an experience she said was ”a culmination of, you know, built up over the years with the abuse and the pain and at the time I was messed up with all the drugs and alcohol.”

Mallette described drugs and alcohol as exacerbating her depression and helping to create a scenario that led to her suicide attempt. These issues are also detailed in Mallette’s new book, ”Nowhere But Up: The Story of Justin Bieber’s Mom.”
The full interview will air this week on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Mallette’s son first caught attention for his own statements about abortion back in February 2011. Considering his pro-life stance, it’s very possible that his mother’s own experience has colored his views. As TheBlaze previously reported, Bieber told Rolling Stone magazine that he doesn’t “believe in abortion” and that it’s “like killing a baby.”
When Rolling Stone pressed him about how to handle cases of pregnancies resulting from rape, Bieber admitted while the situation would be “really sad,” he doesn’t see that as a reasonable excuse to have an abortion. “Everything happens for a reason,” he said. “I don’t know how that would be a reason. I guess I haven’t been in that position, so I wouldn’t be able to judge that.”

Sep. 18, 2012 at 12:01pmI am starting to like this kid and his mother was only 17. Boy look at him now. I knew a girl who was raped and became pregnant and she decided to have the baby. Never thought of aborting it. I told her she probably has a future senator, or athlete. She’s a saint.

Sep. 18, 2012 at 7:19pmMartin Sheen’s wife came into this world as a result rape. Her mother would not abort, finding the baby completely innocent of the heinous crime that befell her. While Martin Sheen supports a mostly liberal agenda, he is staunchly pro-life. His marriage has lasted decades and he credits his wife with every good thing that has ever happened to him. Now don’t get all crazy on me, liberals. I’m just reporting the facts. Look it up. You’ll see.

Sep. 18, 2012 at 10:27am“Justin Bieber’s Mom Details Why She Chose Not to Abort Her Son”. Does that mean she is pro-choice? No one is for abortion. Let me repeat that NO ONE IS FOR ABORTION. It is and always has been about the woman’s Choice. Just like Justin’s mom made a choice. It’s not the governments call. How hypocritical can you conservatives be wanting a small government and for them to stay out of your lives yet proposing the government make a law to tell women what they can and can’t do? The inconsistency and “deer in the headlights” look when confronted with logic makes you look stupid, ignorant, and confused.

Sep. 18, 2012 at 10:57amDear “YourWorstEnemy,”
You’re logic is non-existant. If NO ONE is for abortion, then there wouldn’t be any. It wouldn’t exist. Period. If it’s all about ‘choice,’ then why can’t we choose to eat salt, sugar, soda, use baby formula in a New York City hospital, or choose whether we have health insurance or not? Why can’t employers choose to NOT pay for someone else’s contraceptives or abortions? That’s what the Dems want…to force us all into their rules of what they want. I don’t want to fund Planned Parenthood, or Sandra Fluke’s bedtime activities, or her ilk’s abortions with my tax money. I also want to choose my own lightbulbs, and the kind of toilet I want. But you liberals don’t want us to make any of OUR own choices, except to murder our offspring. Any what about the BABY’S choice to live? Why not just kill, I mean abort, your 2 year old when they become incontinent too?

You can raise all the straw man arguments like “rape’, that you want. The bottom line is you are for abortion and the kiling of babies. Rape and incest make up less than 2% of abortions.
You try the “small government ” argument too, another straw man .. Let’s apply your idiotic logic to a husband killing his wife. Only he gets to decide if the wife is a burden to him, then the state stays out of it cuz well you know small government.
You are an intellectually dishonest fool. I pity your children and grandchildren assuming any of them survived birth..

Get out of our houses with the personal choices we make. Get out of our bank accounts with the money you take to pay for your abortions and contraceptives. Get out of our faces with all your rules and regulations! Get out of our health care insurance. Mind YOUR own business! If a woman wants an abortion, or condoms, or the Pill, or anything else, let her pay for it herself or with her boyfriend/husband’s help! It was their ‘choice’ to have sex (not counting rape or abuse), so let them ‘choose’ to pay for their own consequences!

Sep. 18, 2012 at 11:13amIf conservatives had their way, abortion would not be up to the government. It wouldn’t need to be illegal because you’re right, no one is for it. The problem here is that “progressive” and “open minded” folks like yourself insist upon making it something normal. It is not. And if conservatives had their way, lies wouldn’t be spread and all women would know the dangers of abortion and would understand they are, in fact, destroying an innocent human life.

Sep. 18, 2012 at 11:54amYou’re not pro-choice. You’re pro-abortion. Pro-choice means you’re in favor of people being allowed to make choices. Any choices. But you mean it in a way that applies only to abortion.
Pro-choice means being allowed to choose whether or not to own a gun.
Pro-choice means being allowed to choose your own health care.
Pro-choice means being allowed to choose your religion and follow your beliefs without being penalized by the state.
Pro-choice means being allowed to choose whether or not to pray in classrooms.
Pro-choice means being allowed to choose to start a business without having to sift through 4000 pages of government red tape and having to hire a lawyer just to make sense of it all.
Pro-choice means being allowed to choose to exclude people from your group that you don’t want.
You’re not pro-choice. You only mean “abortion” by that term. You are pro-abortion through and through.
But pro-choice means being allowed to choose whether or not to live, and abortion takes away that baby’s choice. And the right to live ALWAYS trumps convenience and comfort. The right for the baby to live ALWAYS trumps the wishes of a person to live without being “burdened” by an unwanted baby.

Liberals with lazy brains wail about “choice”. It is about “responsible” choice. Dismembering and killing an innocent child is hardly responsible choice. It is murder.
If you truly believe in choice, give the child a voice as to whether or not they agree to be aborted.

Sep. 19, 2012 at 6:42pmSo when you get raped, the “attacker” is absolutely NOT pro-rape, but merely exercising their “choice” to have sex. I absolutely agree with you. Using the logic of less government this will open up a whole new world for us law abiders. After all this is all about a persons choice to do what they want with their own body. I guess I don’t understand the arguement that the rape victim is in fact a victim, and this is a terrible crime, yet when the baby is killed that seems OK. It would appear the left is waging a war on babies. at least the rape victim has a chance to prevent this act, whether it is screaming, running, fighting back etc. The child has NO defense! It is at least possible for the woman to prevent the conception of the child. It would seem to me it is a “little” unfair to kill the baby when they had NO choice.
You have to make decisions:
1) when is it living?
2) when is it absurd to kill a baby? before birth, during birth, after birth, 1 week after birth, 2 weeks, a month, 5 years old?

Sep. 18, 2012 at 10:00amWe would not be discussing abortion if the laws made sense;
1. In the case of pregnancy out of wedlock where both parties consented to the act, NO abortions allowed for the sake of convenience of either party; BOTH parties and ONLY both parties, are responsible for the health and welfare of the child , and in the case of adoption, both parties are to anonymously share the expenses of the adoptive parents until the child turns 18- period.

Sep. 18, 2012 at 9:10am@ voiceofreason “Women are not baby making machines.”
Snicker. Actually we are. We bear the children. That is our function, designed by God (or nature if you prefer, makes no difference in this case).
It’s the women who keep denying that who mess up society for the rest of us. Just because we have the ability to defy nature, doesn’t mean it’s in our best interest to deny the role of a woman, or try to put ourselves on “equal footing” with a man (apples and oranges).
No one has the right to end human life, especially one that cannot defend itself in any way. Frankly, any woman who would willingly kill her own child deserves little sympathy.
In cases of rape, that is an awful thing. But I detest even more a person that would tell that woman she can kill that baby and forget it.
Once there is life inside you, the baby is your baby, but that life is no longer “your choice.” We don’t get to play God and choose who lives and who dies without a clear, compelling reason why we must do so (life of mother). To deny this defies all reason borderlining on insanity. We don’t pick up a knife and hack a baby to pieces 5 mins born, and we have no excuse to do the same thing before he/she is born. There is no difference.
