Mother Claims Walmart Clerk Refused to Sell Her a Shotgun Because She’s a ‘Petite Young Woman’

Walmart Employee Allegedly Refuses to Sell Prayse Dangler a Gun Because It Is Too Big

Is there such a thing as “too much” gun for a woman?  That’s what one Walmart employee in Clarksville, IN, implied when he “firmly refused” to sell a Mossberg 930 to petite Prayse Dangler, she claims.

Not only that, but primarily based on her size, the employee allegedly threatened to call the FBI and asserted that she was really buying the gun for someone else.

Dangler explained what happened on her Facebook page (via the Firearm Blog):

“Yesterday at Walmart I tried to buy a shotgun to keep at the house with me when Brad is gone. We live in the heart of downtown New Albany where there is a lot of foot traffic, and we believe that me having a reliable way to protect myself and our baby when Brad isn’t here is just a responsible thing to do.

Here’s the kicker though. The man behind the counter looked at me in disbelief when I pointed out the beefy Mossberg 930 Tactical weaponThe man then proceeded to interrogate me about what I wanted it for and how it would be used. He said that I didn’t hold it right and that I needed “something else better suited to you”. He put it back in the case and firmly refused to sell it. – All because I am a petite young woman!

He threatened me with the FBI and accused me of purchasing the gun for “someone else” – namely my husband who was with me. My husband informed him that IF he was the one that would be primarily using the gun then he would have bought it himself… [Emphasis added]

(Photo: Facebook)

Both are legally able to own a gun, she writes, and she has personally owned two pistols.  Regardless, she says, “the man refused to sell the gun to me and the passive manager escorted us out of the store.”

Dangler’s Facebook post concludes: “My husband is furious that my rights as a woman to lawfully purchase a sturdy home defense weapon, were trampled by this sexist man simply because the gun looked like too much for me! And I’m horrified that this man made me out to be some criminal for wanting to purchase a gun myself…”

A number of gun blogs are similarly upset, pointing out that Americans have the right to own a gun regardless of sex, race, stature, etc.

But was the Walmart employee egregiously out of line in suggesting something “better suited” for the worst-case scenario Dangler described?

Natalie Foster from The Girl’s Guide to Guns weighed in on the situation, via NRA News:

“I want to give this [Walmart employee] the benefit of the doubt at least a little bit,” Foster commented.  “With all the straw purchasing and everything that’s been going on with Fast and Furious…I understand if he’s trying to prevent straw purchasing, but it seems like he was just being arrogant and ignorant.”

What do you think?  Was the employee wildly out of line for both pointing out that the large weapon may not be best suited to her needs, and then accusing her of “straw purchasing” the weapon when she persisted?

In CONTROL, Glenn Beck presents a passionate, fact-based case for guns that reveals why gun control isn’t really about controlling guns at all; it’s about controlling us. Find out more HERE.

Sounds like someone needs a pink slip.

The funniest video I ever saw was a petite woman shooting a Desert Eagle .50. The gun came back and hit her on the top of the head. It was hilarious, but it was her right. I don’t believe that she was hurt other than probably a bump to remind her for a few days (at least I hope that was the case).

      @ All:

My kid sister is smaller than this woman in the story. She HAS a Mossberg 930 and usually does 20 clays out of 25. But when hunting, she prefers her .357, with which she can knock the bung off a flea.

She does use one of those hand exercisers to better her grip, which is paramount.

Its all about practice, and if I were them, I’d make that idiot clerk apologize, then force the butt head to do the paperwork. Just for kicks.

Nope, the 930 (and most “tactical” shotguns) are actually BETTER SUITED to a smaller framed person than a typical hunting shotgun (which has a much longer barrel).

She has a right to buy a gun but the seller has the right to refuse to sell it, which he exercised. She might seek civil damage but he was within his legal rights as much as she was. Go to another store and buy the shotgun, local gun shops need the business more than Wally world anyways.

Your right it isn’t,but I have sold a few things in my life and never flinched from asking questions as to what the customer wanted to achieve by purchasing a particular item. It’s called Customer Service. From reading the piece it appears this clerk was just that an order taker who went to far. Hopefully she has learned a lesson and her next purchase will be at a Licensed Firearm Store where they can help her make the right purchase for her body and purpose. If she was to purchase a hand gun their, they I would hope would steer her towards a model whose grip would fit her hand. Same thing for a shotgun, these are deadly weapons and need to be handled with proficiency.

I have “small” female friends (one at 4″11 and 95 pounds) that can handle just about any weapon out there. This “gimme that thing before you hurt yourself, little girl” mentality has got to stop.

And I can’t see why anyone who has ANY problem selling a person a weapon according to her 2nd amendment rights would be working in a job where he sells weapons.

That would be like a priest working as a pimp after hours. Or narcotics agent working as a drug dealer. Oh, never mind. Both of those things have happened too.

Yeah, um, you’d be the only person breaking the law in that scenario, big guy. It’s called assault. What law did the Walmart employee break? Be sure to let law enforcement know you have a right not just to be a jerk, but to also threaten bodily harm.
The solution is to take your business elsewhere. Stupidity would be taking a minor inconvenience and turning it into a physical confrtontation. You can certainly choose to make what you perceive to be a bad situation worse. And then be held legally accountable. Keepin’ it real… real dumb.

You know what tends to see lots o’ people embracing discrimination on this forum: Anytime an eatery wants to ban children. Apparently, kids DON’T have a right to eat where they (or their parents choose). Is eating a right? Probably….
So refusing to do business with folks may be poor customer services, but is it generally illegal or unconstitutional in the private sector? Nope. If Walmart doesn’t wanna sell you cough medicine, it doesn’t have to. Yeah, I really like being made to feel like a junky or drug mule when I buy my over the counter cough medicine. Solution: Go to a store that DOESN’T insult me.
You don’t have a “right” to get ticked off and show your rear. You do have a right to take your business elsewhere.
If businesses don’t have to serve kids, guess what, cranks? THEY DON’T HAVE TO SERVE YOU!!! All they gotta do is have a valid reason. I’m not defending Walmart. I’m attempting to defend civilzation.
Slap people about because you’re emotionally unstable and believe you have a right to force others to do your bidding. That may be machismo; it sure as hell ain’t bein’ a man.

Hey Aggie, as someone who currently lives in Texas, and before that Arizona, I have to tell you that when it comes to 2nd Amendment rights, Texas isn’t even CLOSE to being Constitutional. I used to belong to the AZ Civilian Defense League and they were an effective gun rights lobbying organization. There is nothing similar in Texas. You can’t carry concealed without a permit, you can’t carry openly at all and a permit costs over $150. In a number of other states, you can carry openly, or even concealed without a permit. Some states (PA among them) only charged $25 for my last PA concealed carry permit. Exactly how does Texas who requires a permit to carry a handgun AT ALL. When Texas gets to Arizona’s level of Constitutional carry without a permit, I’ll agree, but until then a number of states have Texas beat big time. I think the situation is that the capital is located in Austin and there are simply too many liberals (and court mandated districts set aside for liberals) in the legislature to actually make the gun laws truly Constitutional.

Gee, Hornz, you just made a good point and may not even realize it. Take your business elsewhere as you choose… vote with your time and wallet. That’s absolutely what this couple should do. So long, Walmart! I’m sure some other dealer will gladly legally sell a weapon to this family. Hell, I only had to be reminded twice how one of the local Tractor Supply stores doesn’t need my money. Hey, no problem! I’ll GLADLY deal with other stores in the area if you’re doing so well!
Walmart absolutely sucks canal water when it comes to knowledge and support (e.g., ammo selection) of firearms. Hell, this description fits pretty much all of the store’s departments. Understand, I’m not anti-Walmart. I just sure as hell have learned thru a few experiences NOT to bother with Walmart on supporting my firearms.
This forum not up to your standards? The same philosophy applies. Unless you wanna stick around and continuously repeat your critique over and over. You wouldn’t do that now, would you? The Constitution has absolutely nothing to do with this incident. Unless the employee at Walmart is an agent of the government. The Constitution was designed to protect the citizens of this country from the government by outlining exactly what it can and cannot do. Walmart is a private company and the employee who refused to sell the woman a shotgun is a private citizen, not an agent of the government. Therefore there was no violation of the second amendment by the sexist salesperson.

I would suggest going to a gun shop/range where they rent weapons, or borrowing someones, to see if it is, in fact, the right choice. Bottom line, she should be able to purchase any gun she wants if she meets the requirements.

    IDIOTS!!

First would never buy a gun at Walmart when I can get a better price at Cabella’s or Cheaperthandirt.com but that is just me…

My wife was looking at the Mossberg 500 and the guy behind the counter was fine with her looked at it at Cabella’s…granted the A-HOLE next to her laughed at the thought of my 5’1 wife buying a 12 guage and made the comment under his breathe that she couldn’t handle the weapon…he was lucky I was away managing the kids or his HICK ARSE would have been sporting the shotgun right where the sun don’t shine….

sorry…you can’t judge a gun and user….lots of women have and use guns that many think are “too much” for them..and many of those same women handle and shot and are more accurate than the “manly” men that scoff at them….

IDIOTS…pure and simple…sell the damn gun and take the commission..you dolt!!

Fortunately there are 5 out of 8 Wally Worlds in my area of north central Fl that sell a decent selection of firearms (including AR-15 PLATFORM) & a good supply of ammunition. We also have a Bass Pro and a Gander Mountain over near Orlando that sell them also. I have priced all of them and for the most part Wallys is cheaper. A friend of mine works for them and tells me they make very little margin on weapons sales. Most of people staffed in these WallyWorld sporting goods here are knowlegeable in the process and the laws as well as the state hunting and fishing licenses rules & regs. I cant see ol Clyde, Marlon, Brandy, Merle or Cullen here refusing to sell a firearm to anyone that is of legal status.

If they are out of stock on a rifle, shotgun or any ammo I may look to purchase they will order it for me no problem.

On buying out of the CTD, Cabelas, or any other site, if you weigh out the cost plus shipping, I find that ammo and or the firearm is cheaper to purchase at Wallys, (most of the time) if they have what I’m looking for.

We are fortunate that here in this part of central FL, we are a pretty conservative group & cling to our guns and religion. We work, own property, hunt, fish, and protect ourselves, our families & neighbors, we love America & our Constitution. We also make some damn good BBQ!

BTW, I have found a good company for online sales and that is Slickguns.com, they are pretty reasonable.

I got a.357, my first gun, and myself, my ex husband and a friend took it out one day to shoot it (it was my first time at shooting a gun ever), it was way back when so in WA State we had a place we always went up in the woods that was safe. We pulled in and another man was shooting his guns and when we came up and I took out and the man looked at me and looked at the gun and told me “becareful don’t drop it” as he was chuckling under his breath, and he stepped back. I looked at him and told him I wouldn’t drop it and took aim at a milk jug hanging out of the tree, again I had never shot a gun before, I took aim and pulled the trigger, SHOT it DEAD CENTER multiple times. By the time I looked over at him he was putting all his gear away and walking away. My ex husband looked at me and said the man turned white as a sheet, looked down to the ground and turn around to leave!

DON’T JUDGE WOMEN!! If we can carry a child for 9 months, breast feed them for a year and keep them under control for 18 years, I think we are able to shoot a gun that’s a little bit bigger then we are!!!

As a “petite” woman, my 5′ frame prefers a pistol, but if someone turned me down for a shotgun purchase, I’d be yelling just like this lady! Seriously, Wal Mart, what has happened to your employee standards? This is one of a number of ugly stories about stores where your employees have WAY over-stepped their boundaries! There was one about not believing a woman’s $100 bill being ripped up and thrown away because they ‘didn’t believe it was real’! Not good press lately, guys! Get your act together!

I am a man, but was firing my Dad’s 12 gauge at the age of 7. At that age I was really small too. When I entered the 7th grade, the start of the then Jr High School, I was all of 4’10″ . This should give you an idea of how small that I must have been at 7. Those three years of Jr High drove my parents nuts though. I grew 13 inches, and my shoe size jumped every couple of months. I was essentially a tiny thing back then, but my Dad taught me well not only with shotguns, but his .30-06, and some pistols back then. I can’t see an employee making such a judgement call, and even if he does think she holds it wrong, her husband can teach her. Sort of like driving a car when a youngster first gets behind the wheel of a two ton potential weapon. You have to begin to learn somewhere.

This Walmart employee was way out of line. Anyways, they should not even be selling guns at Walmart. That’s like selling twinkies at the fish bate store. It makes no sense. Walmart employees no nothing about guns and shouldn’t be handling them in the first place… A Walmart employee can be anyone from A to Z and usually don’t have an IQ above 50. The greeter usually picks their nose and stares at their feet. They’d probably sell it with the bullets inside. Anyways, this employee was wrong, rude, and this woman should get an apology and get the gun she was trying to purchase for free. At least that would be the mannerly thing to do. And fire the loser behind the gun counter… or put him in charge of placing the bananas in the fruit aisle.

The sales clerk went way beyond the pale here.

It’s the job of a salesman to try and find the right product for their customer. Especially if the product could be dangerous. If a small woman wanted to buy a big gun, I’d probably try to steer her towards something a little smaller. However, if she was insistent I’d sell her the gun. I wouldn’t try and intimidate her and threaten her with the FBI. Size isn’t everything. Proper training and strength can more than makeup for a lack of size.

I’m a petite woman. I shoot a 590 Mossberg 12ga with no problem. My neighbor is a petite woman. The same gun almost knocks her over. Pointing out that the customers size/weight may cause her problems is a kind thing to do. After purchase is no time to discover such a simple thing, but that’s where it ends. The Walmart employees actions beyond that are obtrusive and unacceptable.

I have zero doubts that she is telling the truth. I once worked as a vendor for a soft drink company. One of the least favorite parts of my job was delivering to Wal Mart. As strange as it might sound, Wal Mart employees are the most arrogant people you will ever come across. Despite the fact that they are considered trash by most of society they seem to be very proud of themselves. This woman is telling the truth, the gun clerk and the Manager should be walked to the door.

Most stores have a sign that says “We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone.” This is a common rule. If the customer creeps you out, you can refuse, so long as the refusal doesn’t violate a “protected class” argument.

While all businesses do have the right to refuse anyone. The clerk does not. The clerk does not own Wal-Mart and must operate under the policies of the company that employes him. If he really thought this was a straw sale he should have called his manager.
About 2years ago I went into our local Wal-Mart to buy ammo when I told the clerk that I wanted 2 boxes of 45. I was informed that no-one should have that much ammo at one time. I politely walked away, found the manager and ask him if he would have any problem if I bought all of the milk he had in the case. After he told me no; I then ask why buying 2 boxes of ammo was not ok. I left with 2 boxes of 45.

Please, leave the lawyers out of this. Vote with your wallet. If you want to experience good customer service, you aren’t shopping at Walmart. I know lots of folks work at Walmart and some probably visit this forum. Hey, thanks for keeping the shelves stocked (for the most part). I stand by my experiences and those of people close to me: Walmart is cheap… you’re trading something for that cheap product; usually, it’s the idea of anybody in the blue vest giving a damn whether or not you leave satisfied. Walmart KNOWS you’ll be back; they’re counting on it. I’m not anti-Walmart. Just know what you’re sacrificing as a customer.

Yep. Instead of being bigger than Walmart, let’s screw EVERYBODY. Bring a suit and watch how fast Walmart stops carrying firearms. Brilliant. Oh, and let the cost of the courts be passed on to us. This is the solution of a wilting violet.

Gooch…Wal-Fart is not cheap. That is a deceptive practice they use to fool people. You can typically find the same products cheaper almost anywhere else. Bolycott them like I did for over a year and you will find that out for yourself.

Besides I used to be a Walmart Store Manager and I know their inside scoop. I should have wrote a book about it. They literally send the managers out to other stores and they pick a few of the highly visible items. Then Wal-Fart will lower those item prices to beat the other store by a penny or two. They do this until they drive the other company out-of-business and then the public gets to pay full price for everything. The full price is higher than the other companies high price. Ultimately the Wal-Mart shopper loses.

      NOT A CRAZY
Like I’ve said throughtout my posts, Walmart ain’t exactly customer friendly at the ground level. But, oddly enough, they hate bad PR. Calling that 1-800-WALMART line tends to get attention. There is a disconnect between how Warlmart wants to be perceived and how its boots on the ground behave. Another poster with experience as a vendor had a good post further along in the queue about the arrogance of some Walmart employees. Bizarre.
If I’m bored and want a laugh on the weekend, I’ll go shopping with my wife. She’ll tangle with the most obstinate employee. She is continuously schooling Walmart on their damn coupon policy. Slow learners… and, man, my baby is like a dog with a bone. You WILL regret your ignorance. The show is better than most movies you’ll pay to see. If she’s going to the local Martin’s, I pass. Those people seem to actually care about their customers and policies. Go figure. Boring… but appreciated.

It’s lawsuits baby. they have gotten so many stupid complaints that to work at Walmart you have to have a certain mindset and that doesn’t include being a freedom thinker. If you don’t believe me go on line a fill out one of their jobs application. All the way through to the questions that determine your mindset. If you are educated you might want to fake your qualifications downward. But it’s the questions about how you deal with situations that matter.
