1995 Video of Obama Resurfaces: ‘We Collectively Can Decide on Our Fate’

Both presidential nominees are facing more scrutiny for statements they have made in the past as the 2012 election is now less than two months away. Just this week, GOP nominee Mitt Romney faced criticism for his now infamous “47 percent” remarks, while President Barack Obama fought to downplay a 1998 video in which he voiced his support for “redistribution.”

And while some Obama’s remarks from his past have gotten a lot of media attention, others have seemingly slipped under the radar.

One of the videos that apparently went unnoticed is an unearthed clip from 1995, which originally surfaced sometime in 2009, which shows a visibly younger Barack Obama speaking candidly about collectivism and the history of America.

The discussion is titled “Strassman vs. Obama: ‘Corporate Power’ vs. ‘Common Ground.’” Obama announced his candidacy for Illinois state Senate in 1995.

“Technological change is gonna happen, scientific discoveries are gonna happen; I think with the collapse of communism I think we recognize that markets are gonna happen,” a young Obama says in the video.

“But having said all that, I insist — and in this I think I am inheriting what was probably the best part of the dream from both my father, my African father, my white American mother. I think the best legacy of theirs, my inheritance, is the notion that we collectively can decide on our fate…things like technological change, things like mass media, things like the market, are all subject to our control, that we can make decisions for better or worse and continue to move forward and progress.”

After being asked to clarify how government can make decisions as a “collective,” Obama explained that it would have to be a democracy with a “small ‘d’.”

Obama continued: “I would challenge a reading of American history that would say the entire history of America is towards concentration of power and oppression. I think that American history moves in waves and cycles. I think that recapturing the spirit that existed not just in the civil rights movement but in the union organizing movement, in the populist movement, I think there is a running thread, one of the better angels of our nature in this country which has been the notion that you know we can sit around the table and find common ground and make democracy work in the way that it should be worked.”

“Its not popular right now to say that and to believe in a kind of a common good but I think that notions of common good are the glue that hold our society together,” he concluded.

When looking at just this one video, it would be easy write it off and argue anyone’s views can change over a nearly 20 year period, however, this isn’t the first time that Obama has been caught on tape talking about controversial topics regarding a more socialistic path for America.

  “…punished with a baby” regarding murdering his own grandchild should his daughter get pregnant.
  “…under my plan… rates would necessarily skyrocket..” regarding his war on American Energy.
  “…police acted stupidly…” regarding an altercation between a black professor and local police BEFORE the facts came out.
  “…You didn’t build that…” regarding his war on American business.

  All this collectivism is a bunch of crap! They passed ObamaCare and there is no appreciation. Only crying for more, more, more! More food stamps, more welfare, more unemployment benefits. Higher and higher taxes on those that can pay. The ones receiving benefits are “the ones that need it most”. Collectivism is only incentive to be dependent and disincentive to produce. Mr Obama finds the spirit of American in the union organizing movement. If you look closely at that movement in the first half of the 20th century it is one of thuggery, communism, and racism.

  Exactly REX…Obama sees America as flawed and in need of betterment that’s it’s usually an “oppressor” and a “concentration of power” except at times when things like the union movement take hold and it supposedly veers away from being “oppressive and a concentration of power”.
  
  Obama sees government as the arbiter of success and redistribution where a “collectivist” “one mind” mentality controls the nation. This dovetails perfectly into Obama’s “you didn’t build that, someone else made that happen” whereby Obama believes an individual can’t take his own path but that the government is responsible for any success you achieve. Again it harks back to his emphasis on collectivism. By undermining individual success he attempts to create a mindset among Americans where we’re all beholden to the government and “the hive” ..the “collective”. Yes..this is a concentration of power to the government and a slap in the face to the spirit of the constitution but in Obama’s eyes it’s better because it’s “collectivist” in some way. This way..the government can redistribute as it pleases..picks winners and losers..etc. What this does is it makes the people beholden to the will of government. Isn’t Mr. Howerton being deceptive with his headline since what Mr. Obama is actually saying is that he disagrees with the notion that “the entire history of America is towards concentration of power and oppression”

But then again after the whole “apology tour”, “you didn’t build that” , cutting Medicare by $700B and removing work requirements from welfare lies, would you really expect anything else?

In Obama’s eyes..America has always needed “fixing” to become more collectivist which is to say..more socialist or even soft communism in order to be “better” than what it is normally.

  Did you notice that Obama believes America only veers away from being an oppressor and a concentration of power when things like the unions are given more power?
  And how is Obama’s “let the unions rule” plan working out for GM today? Well..Obama refused to let GM file for a structured bankruptcy in order to preserve the UAW contracts. Investors lost their investments in the company. So Obama had the government (read: tax payer) buy 27% stake in GM and installed the UAW to be in charge. Numerous CEO firings or “resignations” take place. Today GM is in trouble and the management is asking for the government to sell it’s stake in the company so that it can lift salaries and attract new talent to the struggling automaker. Obama’s reply is a firm no because by selling it’s stock, the tax payers will see just how much of a loss they’ve incurred by buying GM and he gets to keep the unions in control there. This is Obama as oppressor but because it’s a “collectivist” oppression based on government centered cronyist power, apparently it’s more palatble to him. This video should scare the hell out of every freedom and constitution loving American or anyone with a clear and logical mind. Obama is tainted, he’s marinated in leftist thought and it’s causing us pain.

  If the US is such the oppressor to Obama, then what would he call the Middle East? If he hates this country so much then he should leave and go live in a country that believes in socialism, the collective good, and redistribution of wealth, except his of course. Obama would then feel much more at home.
  Of course, the US oppressor allowed him the right to full college benefits, gave him the right to become a Senator with no experience, and the right to hold the highest office in the country. Yah, what an oppressed country he lives in.

While we haven’t been perfect, compared to those around us, we are pretty close. When was the last time an American General set up the white tent for three days outside a city while ordering them to surrender and then, on the fourth day, set up the black tent then send his men in and killed every living thing? That was standard procedure for the Mongols.
Dear Leader’s head was well brainwashed throughout his childhood. He may be an American on paper, but he isn’t an American in thought. He is like the whiny welfare types that don’t realize that they are in the worlds top 25% in income, and they don’t do a thing for it.   Unfortunately my Father in law watches MSNBC religiously… Needless to say we do not see eye to eye with politics. He got so heated one night he was flat out yelling at me about the health care bill. He was trying to convince me that it would reduce costs. I disagreed and said it was going to cost my wife and I more (we are a young couple with limited funds) along with everyone else who is doing what they need to. He proceeded to call me selfish after talking about how he wants to start his own business (which he can’t fund anyhow) and how this could make that possible for him. I just couldn’t find the logic and told him that. He flat out was throwing a tantrum while I did not raise my voice once. Just looked him in the eye.

Although all of this old footage being reported as if it were new information is somewhat damning, I think we are being done a disservice by pretending that anyone need go back any further than the past 4 years to find evidence of this horrible president’s OBVIOUS failure to lead this nation in the right direction.

But, please, continue piling up ALL the evidence, just don’t neglect to report on the CURRENT administration’s utter failure on all fronts, foreign and domestic.

He actually told us what he was about during his campaign, and continues to tell us what he is every time he opens his mouth.   Here Here. I agree. The video only is viable in adding to the narrative of the president’s core belief system. I do believe it helps the less informed that catch snip its here & there. People want to know Obama the person. This is why his numbers are so high. There seems to still be some intrigue or air of mystery. People still want to know who this guy is. Most of us do. We get it. Most Americans don’t see it so I believe it does shock some people. To us the last 4 years is all we need. To the rest still trying to learn the complexities of this president it could be very telling to their overall viewpoint. There are still undecided voters out there. Looks to me like you are jumping the gun here. What about the introductory words ““I would challenge a reading of . . .”? Doesn’t that mean that Obama expressed the opposite of the words quoted in the title of your post?

Not that I would defend anything Obama does, but as Conservatives I want to make sure we are accurate in how we are characterizing his prior statements. We can win without the spin.

The bailout wasn’t paid back at all..GM used TARP money to pay a portion of it and today GM is begging the government to sell it’s 27% stake so that it can lift the salary caps and hire better talent for the struggling company to have a chance to compete. Obama’s answer? No because if the government sells..then the extent of the loss that the tax payer has incurred will become self evident and Obama can’t have that in an election year. This is Obama’s government centered collectivism in full display..protect the unions (read: voters and foot soldiers) and his power at the expense of the company. Obama’s oppression apparently is more palatable to him then somenone else’s.

  I was just going to post the same thing. I go to The Blaze specifically to avoid this type of misleading and dishonest headline stuff. We need to hold ourselves to a higher standard than this. The person who posted this article, Jason Howerton, should fix this ASAP.

  (colonialists). At least thats how I read it. Again and as usual, alot of words but nothing of substance. I myself would love to see him not generalize everything he speaks…….but then again if he were to speak clearly and to the real points this great nation would vote him out for sure!
