Faith healing is an immensely controversial means of curing peoples’ ailments. Depending on the extent of one’s illness, the practice can be down-right dangerous, particularly when it comes to declining medical care for life-threatening and easily-treatable diseases. Russel and Brandi Bellew of Creswell, Oregon, learned this the hard way after their 16-year-old son died due to a burst appendix last year.
Rather than take their son, Austin, to a doctor or a hospital when his symptoms worsened, the Bellews decided to “pray away” his condition. Now, following his death, they are avoiding jail after admitting that they let their teenager die in an effort to practice their faith healing.
The Bellews pleaded guilty to criminally negligent homicide on Tuesday and, as a result, they were both given five years probation. Had they been convicted of manslaughter, the husband and wife would have spent a mandatory minimum sentence of six years and three months behind bars.
KVAL-TV has more:
In addition to the probation the Bellews received, they will also be legally required to contact a doctor if and when their other children have any sickness or impediment that causes them to miss school for more than one day, the Register-Guard reports.
While the courtroom heard that Austin purportedly wanted to rely upon faith healing rather than doctors’ knowledge to cure his illness, the legal penalties still stand. Regardless of what the teenager wanted, under Oregon law, one must be 18 years of age in order to make decisions regarding personal medical care.
Austin, who died in December after a week-long battle with appendicitis, was one of seven children. The family’s religious beliefs, which forbade them from seeking medical attention for their son, come from their membership in the General Assembly and the Church of the First Born.
In the church’s eyes, modern medicine isn’t the answer to peoples’ medical problems. Instead, prayer and faith healing are intended to cure disease.
Here’s an original news report from when the parents were arrested back in February:
One of the most surprising facts in this case is that this isn’t the family’s first time experiencing tragedy as a result of not seeking medical attention. Austin’s father, Anthony, died back in 2007, after he failed to see a doctor to treat an infection in his leg. His mother later married Russel and, tragically, the situation repeated itself just four years later.
The remaining six children were removed from the family home following Austin’s death. While it is not yet known whether they will be permanently returned, a social worker handling the case believes that they are safe in the home. In recent months, the parents have taken turns caring for them and they have been, most recently, living with their mother.
The couple was forced to live apart from one another and to not speak during court proceedings.

Sep. 19, 2012 at 10:45amI have a lot of Pentecostal friends who practice this belief. I do believe that God heals people every day. However, healing comes in many forms and I believe that we are very blessed to live in a society that has healthcare. An appendectomy is a routine procedure, and their son would probably still be alive if they had taken advantage of what God puts right in front of us. So what if they didn’t have insurance. Paying a hospital back over time is better than having a dead child. What a shame. There are some kook pastors out there that really mislead people… Telling them they don’t have any faith if they seek medical help, or that their illness is because of sin in their lives. I’d be willing to bet they belong to a kook church. Not that all Pentecostals are kooks, but the denomination has some controversial teachings. The kind of teachings that result in stories like this.

Sep. 19, 2012 at 10:26amI’ve said it before, and I will say it again. I am an agnostic. I believe in God.. But not for ONE MINUTE do I think God cares enough about me to personally interfere in my life (as I feel God has too much on his plate to concern himself with an individual person).
God does not micro-manage humanity. God gave us the ability to look after ourselves, and it does that a great dis-service to rely on him for everything. And you religious zealots can’t say God is responsible for everything, unless you truly believe that he is responsible for ALL of the bad things that happen as well…. If that were the case, than you would be saying that God is responsible for giving AIDS to babies in Africa and all of the famine and strife that most of the world faces….
To trust the life of your child to the will of God, when you have the ability to save him yourself, is foolish. What if God is busy doing something else?? You would let your child die, while waiting for the help that most likely will never come??
God may have created everything, but that doesn’t mean he wants to babysit everything for eternity… MAYBE that is why he gave us the ability to do it ourselves…
In the end, no-one knows… And God gave me a brain that tells me NOT to rely on intervention, when I can do something myself…

Sep. 19, 2012 at 10:28amThat reminds me of an old joke:
A farmer is in Iowa during a flood. The river is overflowing, with water surrounding the farmer’s home up to his front porch. As he is standing there, a boat comes up, The man in the boat says “Jump in, I’ll take you to safety.”
The farmer crosses his arms and says stubbornly, “Nope, I put my trust in God.”
The boat goes away. The water rises to the second floor. Another boat comes up, the man says to the farmer who is now in the second story window, “Jump in, I’ll save you.”
The farmer again says, “Nope, I put my trust in God.”
The boat goes away. Now the water is up to the roof. As The farmer stands on the roof, a helicopter comes over, and drops a ladder. The pilot yells down to the farmer “I’ll save you, climb the ladder.”
The farmer says “Nope, I put my trust in God.”
The helicopter goes away. The water continues to rise and sweeps the farmer off the roof. He drowns.
The farmer goes to heaven. God sees him and says “What are you doing here?”
The farmer says “I put my trust in you and you let me down.”
God says, “What do you mean, let you down? I sent you two boats and a helicopter!!!”

It doesn’t count. They are morons because they rejected their rational capacity to think. The article says this isn’t the first time their “faith” has failed them in the medical department.
“As any veteran of doctors will tell you.

Absurd. I doubt “most” doctors would claim they are just guessing. Any medical website will give you a list of symptoms related to any given disease, knowledge of such diagnostics is not guessing.

Sep. 19, 2012 at 8:44amI wonder why you never hear about these “faith healing” people giving testimony that a broken arm suddenly repaired itself after prayer? Or a body part being taken off in a combine accident magically reattaching after prayer? Sure, they may pray the “faith healing” prayer for the little things [that the body would naturally take care of anyway], but when it requires actual medical attention, this is what you get. A dead son.
There’s a reason why people didn’t live as long as today, . . . back when medical attention wasn’t as advanced. The sad part is, . . . . even after this, they will “praise god for answering the prayer with ‘no’…”, and someone else will fall victim to their beliefs.
Let’s be logical here. We’ll assume that there IS a god and he makes people as ‘he’ wants, including having the ability to work as a doctor. Maybe your “answer to prayer” is a qualified medical professional. Are they so backward that they can’t consider that? Do they expect their god to provide food on their table instantly? Do they wake up in the morning already clothed, clean, and teeth clean? Do they get assistance from the guy who works on their central air? . . . . . . Do they go to the dentist? If ‘yes’ on any of these, . . . why would they suddenly “wait for faith healing”?

Sep. 19, 2012 at 8:41amSo under Oregon law, a person under 18 is presumed not to be able to make an informed decision. I wonder how many 17 year old Oregonians are serving in the military? Does that make them too dumb to make that decision? Seriously, if we are to have freedom of religion in this country, and the kid was able to make an informed decision about his care, then the boy had a right to refuse medical attention and was responsible for that decision, not the parents. I’m no believer in faith healing, but I certainly respect the choices of a mentally competent person to choose when or if to get care and from whom.

These natural supplements you speak of are not the same as actual working treatments, and that’s sort of the point of this article. If you look at the bottle of these supplements, it will say something along the lines of “This supplement has not been tested by the FDA. It is not intended to diagnose, treat or cure any disease.”
What those parents did is a crime. They willfully killed their son and all they got was a five year slap on the wrist. Belief does not equal truth. Whether 5% of people believe in “western” medicine or 95%, it works. You don’t have to believe in it for it to work. You either understand it or you don’t. Sorry, but probation is not enough. I’d accept, oh, a couple of thousand hours of community service, but not just probation. And I truly fear for the other children. A husband and a son dead. That’s too much. Ref living separately; not sure why that ruling, but perhaps trying to keep them from colluding on a story.

Sep. 19, 2012 at 9:10amAbsolutely. I was scanning for sanity on these comments and found your message.
I had an appendicitis and my parents were good enough to take me to the ER. God’s blessing allowed them that wisdom. My brother’s burst on the way, but got to a doctor.
It is so incredibly painful, and I feel so sorry this child had to lose his life. It wasn’t some sin he had to bear the burden for. Wake up people. Use the gifts we’ve been given, it is a mockery to God to allow this to happen.

Sep. 19, 2012 at 7:59am“While the courtroom heard that Austin purportedly wanted to rely upon faith healing rather than doctors’ knowledge to cure his illness, the legal penalties still stand. Regardless of what the teenager wanted, under Oregon law, one must be 18 years of age in order to make decisions regarding personal medical care.”
______
So under 18 years of age, the state makes the decision..? In the state of Oregon, are all children under the age of 18 wards of the state?
I understand that this topic is hard. On one hand we have parents who trust God for healing. On the other hand we have the State saying a crime was committed. What was the parents crime? For believing that God heals sickness?
I am thankful for modern medicine. But even with that, we still die, don’t we.

Sep. 19, 2012 at 8:43am“What was the parents crime?”
I can answer this easily from experience. Let us set aside for the moment the child was going to die. So even omitting this fact for the moment the crime is still very clear. It is against the law to cause through willful failure to act a child to endure terrible pain and suffering. How can I know about the pain you might ask. In 1964 my appendix failed when I was a young, rushing me to the hospital saved me by a slender thread because when it began partially leaking, it had not completely burst. I know the pain and remember it clearly to this day. For 2 days I was complaining at home and at school about the pain and this was before it burst. The school nurse refused to send me home or call my parents commenting I was just trying to get out of school early. She was why my parents failed to believe I was in danger. Since I had never before done such a thing one would think the nurse would have given me the benefit of doubt. I waited until the day ended and walked in pain 2 miles home as I usually did. Later in the evening my yelling in pain convinced everyone. I can tell you no one should ever be allowed to let a child suffer like this and I cannot understand from the sheer suffering how these parents are not in jail.
I will not judge the faith issue yet the parents were in error as no healing occurred. That does not prove there is not a God who heals if He chooses to. However to allow a child to suffer in pain like this is criminal.

Sep. 19, 2012 at 9:17amIf the parents stood over the child waving a wand like Harry Potter and the kid died you’d all say they should rot in jail. But appealing to the appendix fairy makes it understandable? These zealots are no different than the zealots who start gihads and stone people to deathe because a 2000 year old piece of fiction told them to. Perhaps in 2000 years Harry Potter will be a god, at least the fiction will be better.

Sep. 19, 2012 at 7:53amI believe they are idiots, but what bothered me is they were forced to live apart. ? what was that about, and why can the court do that? I get it if one parent is accused of abuse-who would want to live with a spouse abusing your kids, but they were both accused and the kid went along, so why? As far as God will heal you, I believe He can help, but since He has given us brains, research, good medical care for curable disease, and some very good drs, why wouldn’t you use what God has created through His people? Never made any sense to me. On the other hand, sometimes drs treat to long, especially with kids, but often with adults too.
