‘Real News’ War Room: Why Does Romney Struggle Presenting His Conservatism?
A recurring problem for Mitt Romney throughout the Republican primary that has now carried through well into the general election campaign has been a propensity to trip-up when discussing his conservative views in uncontrolled or seemingly private situations. The latest gaffe to create a subsequent media frenzy and raise questions about his candidacy got off the ground Monday, when Mother Jones released a video clip of Romney during a fundraising dinner with supporters in Boca Raton. In the “secret video,” he speaks in an inelegant way about the Obama campaign’s appeal to the 47 percent of the country that doesn’t pay income taxes and is dependent on government assistance.
The uncomfortable soundbite falls in line with hits like ”I’m not concerned about the very poor,” “corporations are people my friend” and “I like being able to fire people who do a service for me,” all moments in the campaign that Romney’s staff and surrogates would like to put in the rearview mirror.
John McCormack of The Weekly Standard writes that these types of gaffes dating back to CPAC 2012 and “I was a severely conservative Republican governor,” may not be a sign of Romney’s difficulties as a campaigner, but a true lack of understanding and belief in conservatism.
“These appear to be the words of somebody who doesn’t understand American conservatism and its relationship to the American idea,” writes McCormack. Going on to add:
The reason such remarks keep slipping out of Mitt Romney’s mouth is not that Romney wants to wage a class war against lower-income Americans. The likely problem is that Mitt Romney is not a conservative–or at least wasn’t a conservative until late in life–but he is running for president as the nominee of the conservative party on a conservative platform. So he has trouble defending conservative ideas. And when he sells himself to conservatives, he sometimes comes across as a right-wing caricature.
The “Real News From TheBlaze” panel Wednesday discussed what Romney’s remarks say about his conservatism, and whether conservatives still attacking Romney this late in the game are cutting off their nose to spite their face:

Yet some how all of you so called “conservatives” truly believe we will suddenly choose the RINO candidate in 2012? Well, when Romney loses, just remember that the only people to blame is youself. Ill be voting for actual conservative, constitutional values and his name isnt Romney.

Posted on September 20, 2012 at 4:18pmYes he is the weakest out of all the candidates that were running in the primary. Now Fox News has a poll that shows Obama is up over Romney by a huge percentage in three states that will give him the Electoral: http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2012/09/19/obama-has-edge-over-romney-in-three-battleground-states/#ixzz2719gIO00
If all of you were to start talking amongst yourselves about voting third party, we might, just might be able to defeat Obama, but it is in the Republicans hands, like it has been since the beginning, to make the difference. You have to come to the realization that Mitt Romney is not the one that will accomplish the goal, but a third party is and the one that is going to be on all 50 + ballots in the states and territories, is Gary Johnson. Sorry, but that is the truth.

Posted on September 20, 2012 at 5:37amWhy does Romny struggle to present his conservatism?
Because Romney lives by his own code of ethics.
He is not a show boat. He just quietly goes about his business and his business is sucess!
He does what his consience tells him is right, not what a bunch of people looking to be entertained tell him is right.
The office of the President is a business office, NOT areality show like Obama treats it.
Anyone that is undecided at this point has their head squarely imbeded in their AS$
I am ashamed that this country has so many people that are willing to give up what they have been given for a hollow promise. Little do they know, that once Obama and the like have what ther are after the lives of the useful idiots will be meaningless to them. They will be cast aside at best. Left on the side of the road like a dead skunk.

Posted on September 20, 2012 at 10:06amALL-.IN…I agree with you about Romney, but, to win you need diversified appeal. Mostly Romney has negative support: He’s NOT Obama. That is his strength, but he is in a strange position. I think He’s not appealing to the Christian base cause Most Christians look at Mormonism much as they do any cult. Joseph Smith is presented in history as a charlatan and possibly a mass murderer. However nice mormons appear to be they will always carry this black mark.
He could appeal to social moderates, at the cost of conservative social thinkers. The working class, may respect his business history, but don’t believe he can drive a nail. He has not connected with the suffering blue collar people. He has allowed his message to be diluted by the left’s attack dogs, and has not made headway with many younger voters who would like to see a tattoo or two.
I personally, will probably vote against Obama. and that is the best I can do right now.

Posted on September 20, 2012 at 3:35pm@Allin, “He does what his consience tells him is right.” Did his conscience tell him to go along with his attorney and the RNC when they changed the rules at the convention, against the voice of the people, to silence grassroots candidates? That is where the Romney mess up is at. I tried to get all of you to call your local GOP headquarters and the Romney campaign to voice your disgust for this, but apparently you did not. Romney is the weakest candidate out of all the candidates we had to choose from in the primary. Now we are stuck with him on the Republican ballot and he does not have what it takes to win. What does everyone suggest we do? I believe that getting behind a third party candidate, like Johnson, for one election, would get Obama out, and it would send a clear message to both parties that we are not going to take it anymore. In four years, maybe the Republicans will put up a true Conservative for us to get behind. But, we will not get there unless Republicans get their heads out of their @sses and get together on getting Obama out. Romney will not do it, I just do not see how he can at this point.

Posted on September 20, 2012 at 8:04amMADASHEll. You’re right… Ron Paul’s out (he certainly was a POS wasn’t he?). Now the Paul acolytes opine that Gary Johnson is the important force in this election and not Romney. That Johnson offers real choice, and more importantly, that Ron Paul supporters should jump ship to the Liberal-tarian party and vote for The Governor. Why would Ron Paul supporters or anyone else do that?
For most Paul parrots it was Ron Paul or nobody… and now you’re saying all the Ron Paul scholars should go back on their word (Ron Paul do or die)? Or those of us out here who think both Paul and now Johnson have been and would be an absolute contributer to the moral decay of our society (morally bankrupt socially-Liberal-tarian views)… you now want us (we, them) to vote away from our consciences, our Conservative values and morals (our common sense) and go with another big government guy named Johnson?
You should check out Johnson’s record in New Mexico and stop with the song and dance…
Attention alleged Libertarians (Liberal-tarians)… Governor Johnson expanded New Mexico’s public debt just as quickly during his adminsitration as President Obama has during his and he did so during a monstrous economic boom rather than a time of recession. He has no record to run on when it comes to “fiscal restraint”… Johnson did just as much damage to New Mexico’s debt profile on a percentage basis as President Obama has nationally!
Must be just about about the dope…

Posted on September 20, 2012 at 10:31amMy two cents……The people who installed Obama in the office he holds, were able to do it without vetting or qualifications or eligibility. The out come of this election depends on them, not the electorate.
We have surely lost our national sovereignty. If this cabal believes that Romney can help them more than Obama can, Romney will win. Since Obama has proven himself to be rather foolish and ineffectual, Romney may just be the next POTUS. Obama will have his talk show and we merrily “progress” into the NWO.

I will not take anyone serious that shows such bigotry towards one man or one groups ideology. You are against all that is libertarian and all that you say is biased. I know this, Mitt Romney has very little chance of winning the election, so I would say that voting for him is a wasted vote, and I now consider my vote for him in the primary wasted. He was not the guy that the party should have pushed, they should have pushed Santorum or Gingrich, and after they dropped out, I believe now that they should have pushed Paul. any one of those three would have been in a better position to defeat Obama, but alas, we have Mitt Romney. He will be the cause of Obama getting reelected. The only chance that I see at this point is, Gary Johnson, but he will not win if Republicans do not get behind him, and with the mindsets I see, I do not think that will happen, so four more years of Obama is what we are going to get and the country will stay divided until the economy crashes and we all have nothing.

Posted on September 20, 2012 at 12:20amRES-ME….Obama is a satanic globalist, making sure that the U.S. is ready to accept the loss of sovereignty to the NWO. An ‘objective’ review of his term in office bears this out. The last two dominoes are the dollar and the guns we hold. QE3 takes care of the dollar and all the recent “public” gun crimes will lead to the seizure of our firearms , (deadly force will be used).
When the dollar collapses the “emergency” systems will be put in place and the military and para military will be deployed all over the country. At this point civil rights will be suspended and enforced fascism will be the ‘law of the land”. I’m sure you can extrapolate from there.

Posted on September 19, 2012 at 10:27pmNah Butcher that’s crap and you know it. Romney doesn’t represent freedom in any way whatsoever, and at least on this site, it’s obvious most care more about gay marriage than the rights guaranteed by the Bill of Rights. That and killing Muslims. Obama is tolerant of homosexuality and not killing as many Muslims as preferred by the average Blazer, therefore he’s a commie and Romney not. Despite them agreeing on practically every other issue.

I hear all of you people say the Government is bad, but you sure do love government endorsements of your religion don’t you?
In God We Trust became our official motto in the 1950s
Under God wasn’t added to the pledge until the 1950s
People now use these things to say that we’re a Christian nation.
You say you want religious freedom, but have no problem using the government to force others to conform their lives around your book.
If a politician doesn’t mention God, there is an uproar
Please stop with this “liberty vs tyranny” nonsense you people spew.
You are all for tyranny, just your form of tyranny.
To the person who said “redefinition of marriage”
Marriage was never official defined, which is why you have State’s now passing Constitutional amendments defining that.
Regardless, marriage doesn’t come from the Bible and if you think it is, you have a horrible understanding history. The Bible wasn’t the first book written, and whatever came from the Bible, came from previous societies.
Genesis isn’t a factual account of the beginning of the world, it’s not an eye witness account. It is merely a crazy person looking at the world and making stuff up as they went along as to how they got to current day.
Regardless, we live in a Constitutional republic which means the majority can’t force something on the minority if it’s deemed Unconstitutional.
One day, it will be deemed unconstitutional to deny homosexua

The loss of U.S. sovereignty is inevitable, and I know this from my bible study. We have mere months to watch it come down. If any doubt this, then they are not seeing the indicators. You had a short list of your faves to hate, make a list of your faves to love and compare them. who do you trust? I would say, if you are honest, there would be none.

I don’t look up to politicians
I don’t look up to celebrities
I don’t look up to athletes
I don’t try to emulate anyone. I am my own person.
Now just because I don’t look up to those people, doesn’t mean I don’t hope for the best and try to genuinely work with them to make a better society.
Religious people who constantly tell me, “well I hope you don’t put your faith in mankind because you will be let down.”
First off, I don’t use faith in any aspect of my life.
Secondly, just because someone may let me down, doesn’t mean I shouldn’t try to work with them and hope they have good intentions. If I eventually find that they don’t have good intentions, I can move on and try the next person.
Being let down is a part of life. There is nothing about this world that says we shouldn’t be let down.
And just because I do get let down, doesn’t mean I have to accept the impossible and follow superstitious teachings that there is some invisible being that will never let me down. That always has every right answer. That is just flat out nonsense.
All I see Christians on here talk about is how gleeful they are for the world to come to an end so everyone can die and they can meet their supposed savior.
Feel free to have such a grim outlook on this world and on humanity, I choose to think that one day things will get better.

Posted on September 20, 2012 at 11:13amModerationis best…You make the best arguments, and get my blood flowing, and I like that. I’m getting to know you. The coming global empire needs people like you. People who will obey and do what is needed to “progress”. You have no moral standard but humanism. People who will have no moral prohibitions People who think they know good from evil instinctively.
You may believe that you don’t have a place for faith in your life, but in reality you can’t function without it. You have faith. Maybe more than I do. You are sure enough of your own paradigm, that you have denied any greater intelligence. Any moral imperitive, beyond your own contrived value system. Yep, you are gonna fit in, perfectly.(OK sermon over..now encouragement):
Personally, I think you are due for a catharsis, and a change of heart….You are way too good of a fellow to remain in the dangerous and precarious status you currently occupy.

Posted on September 19, 2012 at 9:29pmEastInfection, I give your comment 8 out of 10 points for accuracy. I believe your assessment is closer to the truth than John McCormack’s. I think Romney probably gives slightly more than “a crap” about the social issues, but they definitely are NOT on his list of priorities. And, considering our fiscal dire straits at present, I believe that we are all willing to concede some ground on social issues to get a leader who is strong on fiscal ones.

So Romney goes from being a progressive to an anti-entitlement crusader??? BS. He is a political flip flopper, saying and doing whatever it takes to get to the next step. The man has no core outside of private business

This whole concept that you’re either “conservative” or “liberal”. I think THAT’S b.s….
Why do people have to be pro-life and pro capital punishment to be “conservative”?
Why do people have to be pro-choice & anti- capital punishment to be “liberal”?
These things make no sense to me.
I can run down the list of issues & i’m invariably on “our side” on some issues & “their side” on others… yet i feel like i’m consistent in my ideals & beliefs.
I’m tired of others trying to make me chose (a) or (b) when the entire alphabet should be available.

Posted on September 19, 2012 at 9:19pmI sent this to Glenn after watching Real News…. and then I came across this article at the right scoop.
http://www.therightscoop.com/mark-levin-calls-out-bill-kristol-and-others-for-trash-mouthing-of-romney/
After watching Real News and listening to SE rip Romney’s WORDS, I was appalled at the arrogance of her, along with the rest of the panel, except for Buck, to waste a segment of the show telling us that he sucks as a communicator. Personally, I don’t like her breathy segments and her style … He’s 65, he’s successful and for SE to explain how he could have expressed himself better (in her opinion) was nauseating. Buck said it best, Obama supporters want him to win and they will circle the wagons to make him look good. Conservatives are circling Mitt Romney’s wagon and are shooting at him, not enough to kill him but to do enough damage to prove their point that they are smarter. I do not appreciate ‘our side’ Noonan, Krystal and now Real News telling us that this guy is a buffoon and we’re stuck with a dope. I like Mitt Romney. I like the way he talks. He looks great on camera. I think he’ll be a GREAT president, if we don’t destroy him first.

Posted on September 19, 2012 at 9:48pmAbsolutely! I agree 100% that the left-wing media are criticizing Romney PLENTY without the right’s help. I honestly think that many of these “right-wing” folks are actually playing populist to what they perceive is a liberal majority. Most of them think the massive landslide of Conservative victories in 2010 was some kind of fluke. Won’t they be shocked in November when America’s silent majority speak out louder than ever!
They are guilty of the same shortsightedness that the dems have shown, i.e. they have bought into the lie perpetrated and propagated by the leftist media. The lie in question is that a majority of Americans are now liberal and that the brainwashing campaign from Hollywood, Madison Ave., and 30 Rock (among others) has succeeded.
While there is certainly a very significant number of American people who HAVE succ-u-mbed to the incessant propaganda, there are still more of us who quietly recognize the brainwashing for what it is and therefore do not fall prey to it.
The dems have been drunk with power since 2006. They have fallen prey to their own propaganda and, thinking they had finally won for all time, have proceeded to strut about, exposing their true face – as God-haters, liars, cheaters, and anti-capitalists – to an America they thought were completely in the tank. Well, November should sober them up, and thanks to their own arrogant display, the hangover may last for a decade or more (I hope).

Posted on September 19, 2012 at 10:01pmBy the way, I have a lot of confidence in Romney’s ability to right the sinking ship of our precious Republic. I believe, based on his strength of character and his proven record of success in affecting huge about-faces in horribly failing institutions, that America may very well fall in love with Mitt by the time he is up for re-election in 2016, much as we did with Reagan between 1980 and 1984.
I will be praying for his success, because OUR success – in fact, our very survival as a Constitutional Republic – depends greatly on HIS success as a leader.
GO ROMNEY/RYAN! America is pulling for you, and we’re praying for you and our nation!

DRUDGE REPORT: 1 BILLION PAGE VIEWS IN PAST 31 DAYS! FIRST TIME IN SITE’S 17 YEAR HISTORY… DRAMA, DANGER, LIFE AND LOVE, IT’S ALL HAPPENING NOW…
America is more awake than we have been in 30 years. This is too promising for a few lukewarm commentators like Kristol & Cupp to continue to deny.
You populist jerks better get with the program, because we can see your true nature as pessimistic elitist snobs. Your lukewarmness in the cause for Liberty gives off a familiar stench. Smells like OWS and DNC.

Buck is the only one who speaks from the heart as a true conservative. And he’s always interrupted by Cupp and Cain, and it’s Buck’s that says the most interesting things by far. Cupp and Cain are too concerned with appeasing liberals and keeping with their jobs at msnbc and cnn.

Posted on September 20, 2012 at 1:23amToday, in this country, one cannot speak the truth and get anywhere. This is a symptom of a grave disease. A terminal disease. There is no cure, but soon there will come a day when promises are made and deals are cut. Beware, for there will be no man who has anything on his mind but his own ass.
Big bad wolf coming, and nobody will rescue or even sympathize. HA HA….Secular humanism is not humane, it is murderous…. there is one way out of this and the qualifications are beyond most.Gold is pretty, as are firearms, but they aren’t gonna help. Only way to last is to become a dedicated satanist and worship the antichrist, cause he’s a comin’. That is unless you love the Lord, and trust the Word deeply enough to risk martyrdom.
