Is Congressman Todd Akin’s new campaign video “creepy”? That’s what some commenters are saying after watching the Senate candidate’s most recent pitch at women voters, titled “Women for Todd Akin.”
Perhaps it’s that it begins with a woman who could pass for an Iranian dissident or a member of the Witness Protection Program. Able only to see her silhouette, viewers hear the woman proclaim: “Missouri’s women for Todd Akin is a coalition of women whose goal is to reach others with the truth that Todd is a humble, intelligent, and compassionate leader. He’s not just a good choice for Missouri, he is the best choice for Missouri Senate.”
After that, a number of women appear on the screen to explain why they are voting for Todd Akin, who is arguably most well-known for his “legitimate rape” comments.
The blog Jezebel has a number of excerpts from the clip, accompanied by their own comments:
“For my first twelve years, I grew up in Russia, where it was communist. There was no freedom at all. The government told you what you could and what you could not do. So coming to America for the past seven years, I have been able to make my own choices, it’s because of the Constitution being able to choose between right and wrong.”
Yeah, I love choices, too. Too bad Todd Akin doesn’t. Next.
[...]
“I am very involved in pro life, and I know that he is 100% pro life, AS I AM.”
100% pro life is just sanitized talk for “no abortion, no exceptions.” Which is kind of the thing that got Todd Akin in the public opinion doghouse in the first place, right?
Here is the video:
The video was apparently featured on the “Missouri Women Standing With Todd Akin” section of his website, which features the tagline, “We Think for Ourselves.”
A number of rapid changes have apparently been made to the site since Tuesday morning, due to a number of factual errors regarding the women that are depicted as supporting Todd Akin.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch writes:
The site displayed a large photo showing Akin standing with his wife and two other women. The headline over it read: “I’m a women[SIC], and I support Todd.”
The problem is, one of the women in the photo doesn’t—and the campaign apparently knew it.
Corinne Matti, who is pictured on Akin’s site standing to Akin’s left, is a “tracker” for the Missouri Democratic Party. Her job, which she does openly, is to attend Akin’s public events and report back to the Democrats. She has been doing it for more than a year.
“I suspect they were so desperate to find women that they had to borrow one of ours,” quipped McCaskill spokeswoman Caitlin Legacki. [Emphasis added]
The previous video has also been removed, though whether it is because of the immediate criticism or a factual error is unclear.
Here is the new video:

If you truly understood the arguments that you are trying to poorly make, you would be more informed on the writings of Peter Singer. Do yourself a favor and read his writing regarding abortion. While we’re at it, I already know at what point a baby is full term. My question to you is, at what point does a fetus become a baby, at what moment of gestation can one no longer abort, but rather murder an unborn child? Is seems by your vague statement that you are totally cool with aborting up to full term.

Sep. 19, 2012 at 9:36amHere is the issue; we need to stop with the Akin bashing. He is here, he is not going anywhere and we need to get past a couple of stupid remarks and get behind this guy. I am a MO voter; personally, I don’t really care what his personal thoughts are about rape or abortion. I am not voting this year on social issues, but FISCAL ones. We DO NOT need a write in candidate, that will surely hand the election over to McCaskill. The Repubs have stripped this campaign of ANY backing, so Akin does not have the resources necessary to run a well financed campaign with big money. His son is running his campaign, while I’m sure he may be a smart person, I’m sure he simply does not have the qualifications of that of a big time campaign manager. Here is the issue with Akin, he is actually too conservative for the main stream RINO’s. He voted against TARP and No Child Left Behind which is why the republican machine was so eager to get rid of this guy. While he was not my guy in the primary, I am NOT going to jump ship and hand this election to McCaskill over a social issue that, let’s be honest, unless we win the presidency and start appointing judges to the Supreme Court has no chance of getting changed anyway. What does matter is removing Claire from office in order to ensure, hopefully, that we keep the House and gain the Senate. MO voters please vote a straight R ticket this Nov.

Sep. 20, 2012 at 11:04amVerceof reason: You REALLY are uninformed! Rape victims are and have been for at least the last 20 years or so been given a “morning after pill” of sorts after a rape. It used to be a combination of medications to prevent pregnancy, but now they can use the “plan B” morning after pill. Its something like a birth control pill on steroids. There is no need for an abortion after rape as this medication prevents a possible pregnancy after rape. And, if you’re wife is treated she will be given the same opportunity to take the medication to stop a pregnanacy from occurring. She will be allowed to clean up and get the sperm out of her as you say — geezzzzz. I cant believe you are stupid enough to think Akin wants to prevent women from being able to remove sperm from their body. Where do you get such an idiotic notion? If your wife was raped, you would go over to the rapist’s house and kill his child? Would you kill your wife’s child? Remember any baby is half of her. It’s not the child’s fault.
You are sounding more like a voice of non-reason and hate. Punish the rapist not the child conceived. YES it is hard, but doing the right thing in the face of evil IS HARD. But it is GOOD.

I haven’t seen Mr. Akin or any of his supporters hauled off to jail for speaking their mind. Freedom of speech allows anyone to say what they want without fear of legal ramifications, with some very narrow exceptions. It doesn’t mean that you can say whatever you want without any criticism. Unfortunately the issue this year should not be abortion. Missouri voters need to prioritize because and vote him in for his commitment to removing every word of Obamacare that Claire McCaskill put into law. She is a liar….and a cheat….hiding her plane to avoid taxes and ….bragging about her #50 status as senator~~~ A vote for Claire is a vote for Obama because she sided with him on absolutely everything.
Whether or not you agree with Todd Akin’s pro-life stance doesn’t matter this election because Roe/Wade is not going anywhere. On the other hand…..this is the last chance we have to overturn Obamacare and this election is about freedom. Freedom is being attacked and it trumps all else.

Sep. 19, 2012 at 9:08amSo they planted someone at his events….so what. This guy is not a politician but rather someone who only says what he means and means what he says.
This year is not about abortion but about freedom. If Missouri voters prioritize and actually look at his conservative record (which is opposite of the liar Claire) and realize that we need Obamacare overturned and someone who is fiscally responsible they will vote Akin. He had the establishment dump him and remove funds but is still competitive in the polls despite having less than one-sixth of Claire’s money.
He is pro-life and standing by that and apologizing for the offense his stupid comment made. The word legitimate will come into play when you make rape an exception because anyone wanting an abortion can just call it rape and then get one. The doctor comment was the absurd and stupid comment.
This guy is genuine which is more than most politicians who try to straddle the fence and appeal to everyone. McCaskill in all her ads is pretending to be centrist, touting her #50 status. She voted with Obama on everything………and got Obamacare passed.
The wizards behind the curtain with money blackmailed him into stepping down but it won’t work.

Sep. 19, 2012 at 11:59am@voice please share exactly when a fetus becomes an infant? Is it after the child is born? Is it two years after it is born? Is it at 40 weeks and still in the womb? What if the child is born prematurely, is it only a birthed fetus so we toss it in the garbage? If the fetus and it pops out but we didn’t want that child (or fetus) so again, do we toss it out the window? I’m confused, at what point to we as a civilized society determine when a fetus gets to move up in status to unborn child? Remember the heart starts beating 18 days after conception, so let’s just use that as a starting point.

Social Justice (who does not like justice)
War on Women (who really wants to create war with women)
Pro Environment (Who does not like the environment)
Many more but I’m going to stop to get to another point and I really want you to answer this question
If a woman is 2 months pregnant and a man beats the woman so bad that she looses her “Fetus” do you agree that he should only be charged with assault and battery? By your logic that a fetus is not a life you can’t charge him with murder.
Or a second question if I come across a nest of eggs from a endagered species and the eggs are only 1 day old and I smash them would you agree that no charges should be brought against me since they were not a life?

Sep. 19, 2012 at 2:00pmHmmm, “Very late term abortion”. Again, while I appreciate your choice to use very vague or ambiguous terms, what is a very late abortion? Some progressives have determined that you should be able to ‘abort’ your fetus up to 2 years after the birth. How capable does the fetus have to be? I would argue that without a mother to feed, clothe, and care for an infant no infant is capable of living outside of the womb. So, from your logic a fetus should be a term used up to 18 years of age thus being able to abort it at anytime? (or 26 depending on ‘obamacare’ terms)
