CNN’s Soledad O’Brien Confronts Joel Osteen on His ‘Being Gay Is a Sin’ Stance: ‘That Is the Opposite of Uplifting’
Pastor Joel Osteen is frequently derided for what some see as messaging that is too soft on sin. However, he has been very clear, when asked, about where he stands on specific social issues. Among them: Homosexuality. In past interviews with Oprah and Fox News, Osteen has declared that “being gay is a sin,” making his opposition to it, on Biblical grounds, more than known. This morning, the subject, once again, came up in an ultra-uncomfortable exchange when he appeared on CNN’s “Starting Point.”
In an awkward back-and-forth, Osteen was confronted by host Soledad O’Brien and NewYorker.com writer Richard Socarides. O’Brien, while framing the preacher’s overall message as positive, took aim at the fact that there seemed to be a divide when it comes to his handling of homosexuality.
“You are known for these uplifting services…and I always wonder when you say, homosexuality is a sin and there’s a bunch of people who clearly are gay who are in your church, you’re calling them sinners,” O’Brien said. “I mean, that is the opposite of uplifting, I would think.”
Osteen quickly responded, saying that homosexuality isn’t really an issue that he focuses upon. The faith leader went on to say that there are a plethora of sins and that Christians have a tendency to categorize them (something he doesn’t support).
While he attempted to exit the conversation, another member of the panel jumped in. Mediaite recaps some of the dialogue:
Panelist and NewYorker.com writer Richard Socarides asked if, since we’re all sinners anyway, “homosexuality isn’t so bad.” Later, he asked Osteen whether he “chose” to be straight.
Osteen replied that “I know I have not chosen to be straight. I just feel like that’s who I am.”
He also said his success is due in part to “staying in my lane” and focusing more on uplifting scripture.
At one point, Osteen was fielding questions, with not a single individual on the panel agreeing with him or vocally supporting his stance. O’Brien jumped in during his dialogue with Socarides to say, “One question at a time” — a statement that shows just how tense it became on the set.

Posted on September 20, 2012 at 3:12pmHomosexuality is an Abomination to God. Why is it so hard for people to take the bible at face value? They have A right to be gay I suppose, but it is our duty as faithful followers of Christ to tell the truth, however hurtful it might be. Now don’t get me wrong, that doesn’t mean that we have the right to belittle, beat up or any of that nonsense, but we must let our position be known when confronted with the question of…is being gay A sin…..
just my 2 cents

And I prefer Impe, over Osteen, as well. However, given Osteen’s extremely wimpy interpretation of biblical absolutes, Osteen’s comment regarding a scriptural “abomination” is breathtaking.
I will admit that I’ve always viewed Joel as religiously spineless when it comes to what the Bible teaches as absolutes. While there is no doubt as to the judgement of scripture against the act of homosexuality, I just never expected Osteen to actually state the obvious. Perhaps there is still hope for him, but I fear he has come to the table of scriptural accuracy very late.
Is there still hope for his ministry?

And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect’s sake those days shall be shortened.” before they GET IT!
Mr. Osteen would do well to read Malachi 2 to learn the curses the Eternal lays on priests who lead his people astray. Priests, ministers etc. have a special responsibility not to corrupt God’s laws!

3.) There are 62 books in the Bible. ALL but 1 mention refraining from fornification and/or adultery and the one that does not mention anything about ‘sex’ has a different message. Why would the inspired Word of God mention this subject throught thr bible??

Posted on September 20, 2012 at 4:03pmI believe homosexality is wrong. It is not God’s intended plan. And yes, in the OT it was an abomination. In fact, God said homosexuals were to be put to death in Lev. 20:13. God’s clearly not happy with it. God also calls eating pig ands seafood without fins or scales (shrimp, lobster, crab, crawfish, etc.) detestable. (Deut. 14). The NT shows us a part of God we were never exposed to in the OT. God tells Peter to kill and eat unclean foods in a dream. (Acts 10:13-15). God reveals Jesus who dies for all sinners. “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8) In Corinth a man was having sexual relations with his mother in law. Paul said to remain distant until he had time to learn what it was like living like the devil (deliver him to satan for a season) and in good wisdom that man came to his senses. They countinued to shun him but Paul tells them to accept him back in and love him. God wants us to love all people no matter what. If they’re not living a holy lifestyle then pray for them. I leave with this spoken by a man of great wisdom and stature, “Be merciful just as your Father is merciful. Do not judge and you won’t be judged. Do not condemn and you won’t be condemned.” – Jesus Christ (Luke 6:36-37)
God bless.

Posted on September 20, 2012 at 4:07pmPastor Osteen is a classic example of what the Bible referred to in Revelation 3:16: God is saying…”I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm – neither hot or cold – I am about to spit you out of my mouth.” Osteen is evidently a lukewarm Christian. It is good that he continues to say that practicing homosexuality is a sin. The Bible says it very clearly in too many places for anyone to say otherwise: ex. Leviticus 18:22; Leviticus 20:13; Romans 1:25-27; I Timothy 1:8-10. However, he evidently refuses to deal with it appropriately in his congregation and in doing so he is ignoring what God says to do in such instances. If it’s a sin…STOP SINNING! We cannot pick and choose to apply scripture if we agree with it or not.

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
“The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”
(Proverbs 18:21, NIV)
TODAY’S WORD from Joel and Victoria
Every word you speak matters. Something you say may seem insignificant to you, but to someone else those words can be life changing. When you use your words to lift someone’s spirit and speak words of vision and life over them, you are depositing seeds that will last throughout eternity.
It’s especially important to speak vision into our children. As a parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, teacher or friend, the children in your life need to hear on a regular basis that they can do something great with their lives. As parents, our words carry incredible weight. That’s why you should never put a child down. Don’t ever say, “You’re slow, clumsy or dumb. Why can’t you make good grades like your sister? Why can’t you hit the baseball like your cousin?” Those words are seeds. They can take root and affect that child many years later. Too many people have been crippled by low expectations. But today, all of that can change. Today, you can start to speak vision over yourself and over the people in your life. Today, you can call out the seeds of greatness in others and stir up the gift of God inside. Today, speak life, speak hope and speak vision!
THIS IS JOEL’S MESSAGE FOR TODAY and then I’ll add the Prayer.. NOTE it was inspired by PROVERBS. Any questions?

Posted on September 20, 2012 at 4:24pmRead a good commentary on Rev. 3:16 and come back to tell me what it means. I’m tired of the same old scapegoat. In fact, if you didn’t read the opening of the letter it is addressed to the seven specific churches in Asia Minor (Rev. 1:10-11). And Paul and Peter were talking about gnostics in their day when they referred to false teaches coming in. Here’s an example people always tend to leave out: “They are those with whom the payment for evil is evil. A daytime banquet of defilement is considered by them a pleasure, and they are filled with defects. When they celebrate in their love feasts, they indulge themselves, Having eyes that are full of adultery and sins that never end, as they seduce souls who are unstable and have a heart that is trained in greed, children of the curse.
(2 Peter 2:13-14) I’m sorry but Joel Osteen or many other preachers that are scouted out by prophecy buffs do not go around participating in “love feast”.

I agree with you 100%. Gays (the real ones) were definately born that way. The way I see it, is that God has given us free will, just as he has given nature free reign – that’s why really bad things happen to really good people. Human conception and the splitting of the egg are incredibly complicated processes, and things sometimes go “wrong”.
I’m not trying to be funny here, but when nature fouls up, some people get Downs Sydrom, some get a club foot, and some get gay. It’s just nature,

Posted on September 20, 2012 at 5:29pmDETROIT-unlike liberals and leftists, conservatives and libertarians can agree on some points and disagree on others. This is a point that I heartily disagree with you. I don’t accept that homosexuals are born homosexual. There is no genetic pointer, no marker that one can go to in a human infant and say “this child will be a homosexual”. If there was this whole argument would have been put to rest a long time ago. A genetic pointer to homosexuality does not exist. Every homosexual or their advocate that I’ve asked to produce one either gives me debunked garbage or simply cannot produce one. Homosexuality in it’s strictest form only exists in human beings. What looks like homosexual behaviour in nature is merely shows of dominance, dispute resolution or survival mechanism this is not homosexuality, this is social behaviour within the pack, troupe, flock etc. No where in nature does there exist an animal that will mate exclusively with the same sex to the complete and absolute exclusion of the opposite sex. Your friends may be good people I don’t doubt you, but they’re not being honest with you..somewhere along the line of their development as individuals (early as it may have been) they convinced themselves that they were not attracted to the opposite sex at all. This is a psychological phenomemon, not a genetic one. Why am I so sure? Because homosexuality is a dead end, it serves no purpose to mate with the same sex, in fact it can kill you.

Exactly.
The only reason the media left bring Christian pastor’s on the show to interview is to highlight and label their beliefs on abortion and homosexuality as intolerant and hateful.
On the other hand, when interviewing Muslim leaders, they steer clear of the same issues. They prostrate themselves by making the enemies of Islam their own enemies as well through their condemnation of what they classify as Christian or Jewish extremist hate, while ignoring the massive examples of Islamic terror against homosexuals, Christians, Jews, and women.
Homosexuality is a sin. Homosexuality is an abnormal sexual behavior and is a primary path to propagate STD’s to include issues related primarily to gay sex practices..Multi partner premarital heterosexual behavior is just as bad and is supported through public school birth control access and readily available abortion services to remove all consequence and accountability. Both homosexuality and sex outside of marriage are sins. I believe the reason they are sins is that God knew this activity would lead to serious health and mental well being consequences. I consider the Word of God an operating manual for the human race. The evil ones want to steal the souls of your children and have been outrageously successful by eroding the rights of parents through progressive public policy and propaganda.

Detroit, do you feel the same for pedophiles? Should we not promote their rights as well? NAMBLA considers historical precedent (ancient Greek practices, etc) to justify their position that sexual relations with consenting post pubescent children is normal. They also use examples of modern day cultures where this is legal and part of religious tradition.
To be honest, virgins that are over 18 are rare in this country. Virgins in high school are considered prudes and excluded from the social grouping of sexually active virus incubators.

While we pray for & are just to those who engage in sexually immoral sins, as Paul tells us, we must “put away from [ourselves] the evil person.” (1 Corinthians 5:13) It’s extremely hard to walk away from those we love who are being sexually immoral – I’ve had to do it twice. Now, I’m facing the pain of walking away from a very good friend who is caught up in new age idolatry & won’t hear anything against it, even though she actually harmed me w/ it. But walking away is what we’re called to do. The 1st person I walked away from, repented & returned to the Church & I have hope for the other two. It’s painful but avoiding pain isn’t being a Christian. Picking up our crosses & following Christ is what we’re supposed to be doing. And sometimes the cross is walking away from people we love & praying they will return (& treating them justly while we wait).

Whatever else you think of Osteen he’s right on that one point. I just can’t figure out why he accepts the premise that calling someone a sinner is somehow a negative thing. He NEVER leaves it at that. UNLIKE O’Brien, Osteen believes sinners can CHANGE through a personal relationship with Christ. He believes they don’t have to suffer the consequences of their actions if they’ll let Him into their heart, and allow Him to change it for good.
I can hardly imagine a more POSITIVE message.
O’Brien is guilty of the intolerance she projects onto Osteen (and all Christians, apparently). She conceives of groups as so bound up in some kind of essence that they can’t control, that she can’t imagine the poor rising out of poverty, blacks rising above racism, legal immigrants enjoying full citizenship rights, etc., etc.
Her accusation of intolerance could not be more hypocritical.

Biblically the desire for homosexuality is a denial of God and the placing of God below ones own lust. The cure is as simple as the belief in Jesus for salvation. Jesus will start cleaning your house if you will let Him.

Relatively speaking, that is true since all are the same level of “badness” — the “death penalty” level:
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God
-Romans 3, Holy Bible
20 but [apostle Paul] declared first to those in Damascus and in Jerusalem, and throughout all the region of Judea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should REPENT, turn to God, and DO WORKS befitting repentance.
-Acts 26, Holy Bible
REPENT (rî-pènt´) – verb – To make a change for the better as a result of remorse or contrition for one’s sins.
2 And Jesus answered and said to them, “Do you suppose that these Galileans were worse sinners than all other Galileans, because they suffered such things?
3 I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish.
-Luke 13, Holy Bible
28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting;
29 being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, …

32 who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them.

Posted on September 20, 2012 at 11:55pmWe had this discussion at church. About whether you should kick gays who try to attend out because homosexuality is a sin. It’s clearly sexually immoral.
But, we’d also need to kick out all you folks who got divorced and remarried. It’s adultery plain as day. It is a sin just like sleeping with someone else when you’re married.
AND we’d need to kick out probably 90% of the men. That includes many men on this website, or for you ladies, your husband and/or son who hit that private browsing function on IE or Firefox and masturbate to a video from youporn, redtube, spankwire, etc. Maybe it’s 95%?
Kind of counterproductive eh? So, instead of kicking gays, husbands, fathers, sons, and divorced women out, let me make something clear- as a Christian, I will not run from, shun OR JUDGE a sexually immoral person who is not a Christian. It is not my place. You can be my friend and I’ll associate with you any day of the week.
If you’re Christian and sexually immoral, you have a higher standard. You’ll be held to it. And loved even if you fail to meet it and more importantly loved as you deal with the inevitable consequences of living a life outside of what God intended. I’ll do that because God extended that grace and mercy to us all despite our sins, and I’ll extend it to you.
Love,

A preacher is not to preach his beliefs, he is to teach the Word of God. Joel preaches half of it for what appears to be a fear of offending, and this would cause people to reject him and his messege. So, it would seem that he in fact puts himself before others. The whole message is meant to convict people of their sin and repent , which means to turn from it. Joel may very well do more damage then good with his “good” and uplifting message. People were offended at Christ and His message and the others at this table indicate that truth still exists. If this man would have laid down the truth with meekness (strength under control, forceful but gentle) without compromise, that would have been so. The truth is meant to cut to the bone! Maybe one of them would have been convicted by their wrong thinking. Guess we’ll never know.
Read Jeremiah 6:9-12… is this offensive to you ?

Posted on September 21, 2012 at 9:22amThank goodness Adam didn’t think he was ‘born’ gay, otherwise none of us would be here. Think about that all of you supposed homosexual Christians (which would make that act in direct opposition to Heavenly Father, quote: “Be fruitful and multiply”, the FIRST great commandment after the fall) and a sin by definition and description. Now those who struggle with the highly addictive (being sexual in nature) sin of homosexuality, attend church. stay celibate while they struggle through the VERY strong shackles of this sin (the more egregious the sin the stronger the ‘chains’ that bind you to that sin are) I empathize, love you and pray you will be triumphant over the sin, in a day where the society has broken down to not only accept homosexuality but force it on the masses through ‘speech control’ and punitive “legal” social actions, the struggle is harder than ever before. Stay Strong, pray constantly, and stay actively involved in righteous endeavors.

Posted on September 21, 2012 at 5:32pmNowhere in the Bible does it say that homosexuality is a sin. It talks about man on man, woman on woman action from a heterosexual point of view. It is unnatural (same sex, sex) in that regard. Sex in general, other than procreation is generally a sin though, isn’t it?
I have to wonder if some people are capable of perceiving the difference between homosexuality and homosexual acts. The whole thing gets messy when we consider that “homosexuality” is a modern creation and identity… but that may just be linguistics. *shrugs*.

When you look at SIN in that light then you would see why Homosexuality is a SIN, it fails to produce any generations for continuation of the species that is a SCIENTIFIC fact that will not change no matter how many times you test it or study it. You can only create follow on generations if you the mixing of genetic material from two genders, one male – one female.

Attempting to compare Christians actions toward homosexuals as oppressive is ridiculous when you look at the actions of Islam in which our government supports 100% in their endeavors to govern nations.
Every action to assist Islam by this administration has been nothing more than a death sentence for Christians and homosexuals in those nations. But yet King Hussein is applauded by the MSM for his efforts in helping the poor Muslims and their hatred, backed by violence.
When was the last time a Christian killed their child for disgracing their family because the child was a homosexual? In Islam it happens on a daily basis, and nothing is reported. But we will continue to send financial support to a nation controlled by a group that continues to murder women, children and homosexuals in the name of Allah without hesitation.
Why aren’t they interviewing King Hussein for supporting terrorist organizations with American taxpayers money?

Posted on September 20, 2012 at 2:30pmHere’s an interesting dynamic to this discussion. Richard Socarides’ father- Charles Socarides- was also a psychiatrist and completely disagreed with his son (Charles Socarides has since passed away) on the nature of homosexuality. Charles Socarides maintains that homosexuality is a psychological disorder whereas Richard Socarides (himself a homosexual) maintains that it’s not..that a homosexual is “born this way”..hence the question “did you choose to be heterosexual” to Osteen.
It’s a very loaded, misleading and disingenuous question by Richard Socarides and Osteen had Socarides squarely in the gunsights when it was asked. Osteen should have responded that we dont’ choose to be the normal state of our species..we are genetically pre-propgrammed to be heterosexual as it is the natural and normal state of our species. To be homosexual is to be outside the ideal state of the human species thus making homosexuality an unnatural state for human beings to be in. It’s not like being left handed or something. But Osteen should have continued from there in order to pin Socarides..that if R Socarides has any credible evidence that homosexuals are “born this way” where he can produce genetic pointers to that state of being he should produce it…but a homosexual’s word alone is simply not good enough knowing how obsessively militant and misleading homosexuals and their advocates can be along with the psychological issues inherent in homosexuality.

She saw not good prospects she was interested in. She freely admits she would have rather had a normal dating experience. I’m not sure what percentage this would apply to, but liberals always take the LOWEST as the common denominator and destroy society to accommodate them. Look at the pathetic 18 year old whose parents would not take her to get a picture ID, so she would be unable to vote (sob, sob,) so we have to bastardize the whole process. Liberalism actually does have a final destination, and it is between Cuba and the depths of he//.

Posted on September 20, 2012 at 3:17pmAvengerk. It matters not if there is a genetic marker or not. Many abnormalities are passed on genetically. The bibel says that the sins of our fathers will be passed on to the third and fourth generation. I assume, sometimes genetically. Mankind clearly has done great harm to itself over the generations due to sin. They have not taken care of the earth and have caused genetic mutations and illness – do I even need to go into detail about all the destruction and suffering we have brought upon ourselves because we do not obey the laws of God and nature? Is there any doubt that there are genetic mutations due to sin? Wake up and quit using genetics as an excuse Common sense should tell you we were not made to create new life in certain ways. The creation of life through the joing of two bodies and souls is natrual and intended to be an incredible gift from God. Posted on September 20, 2012 at 4:40pmAMERBUR…the biblical argument (although important) does not convince the godless liberal and the deluded homosexual and his advocates that the homosexual is aberrant or abnormal to the human species.
The crux of the homosexual argument is “born this way”. The implication is that they are genetically predetermined to be homosexual. Additionally..there’s supposedly nothing wrong with being homosexual..it’s just like being left handed or something like that. So if they’re supposedly genetically predetermined to be homosexuals…they then insinuate the idea that they are not to be singled out from society for something they’re powerless to prevent. But ask a homosexual advocate to produce genetic evidence for homosexuality..for some kind of test to show that a child will definitely be homosexual and he can’t do it. Quite simply that’s because there is no genetic predisposition for homosexuality. It’s an aberrant psychological state, a developmental phenomenon in the human species alone. No where in nature does strict homosexuality- where same sex will exclusively mate with same sex to the exclusion of the opposite sex entirely-exist, except in humans. Not penguins, not bonobo apes, not chimps, not dogs…only in humans does this exist. But if that truth is enforced then the whole “born this way” argument collapses and this is something homosexuality and it’s advocates can’t have take place.

you asked “Is getting remarried after getting a divorce a sin? Are you committing adultery? ”
No, according to Jesus there is one cause for divorce. See Matthew 19 ver 9 “I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery”
If your spouse is guilty of sexual immorality, you are allowed to divorce. You may remarry, but the spouse will always be an adulterer. The Catholic Church does not agree with this and I don’t know of any other Christian churches that do. Regardless it is right there in the bible.

Posted on September 20, 2012 at 6:56pmBLAZED & DEFINITELY CONFUSED, The difference is that she considers herself a journalist which are supposed to be objective. That girl is anything but objective. I have no problem with her gay panel getting emotional about the subject since they are obviously CONFUSED like you.
This is an opinion site. If you don’t like the opinions don’t log on. I don’t care for Liberal opinion news therefore I don’t watch Soledad or CNN.

Posted on September 20, 2012 at 1:45pmGod created man and woman to love and honor Him along with procreating, no? The ‘everybody’s ok’ philosophy has been designed by men not God. God loves the homosexuals but clearly hates their lifestyle. Just as I have a reason to change my poor behaviors, IF I love God. And clearly those who choose to live the gay lifestyle IF they love God also would have to change their behavior to please God. Of course if they don’t believe in God then this debate is of no matter.

Posted on September 20, 2012 at 1:42pmShall we say that sex with children, dogs and cats is OK. Some acts are a sin. Some times it is difficult to call a sin a sin. He is being obedient to God. If you do not like it, take it up with the God in whom you clearly do not believe. Why do you care what Joel thinks?

Posted on September 20, 2012 at 1:41pmWell Soledad, Hell isn’t very uplifting either. The message of the Church is to warn others to repent to avoid the consequences of our sinful choices. We can continue to choose sin or we can choose grace and turn away from the wages of sin. The thing is, we cannot claim the grace / repentence and continue willfuly in our sin.
Did Soledad flunk her catechism clases?

Posted on September 20, 2012 at 1:40pmWhy don’t they ask muslims why the Koran advocates violence?
Why don’t they say it is evil for muslims to forbide eating pork?
Do it, I dare you — I double-dog dare you!
Tell them evil muslims who bad they are for all their rules, huh?
LMAO — this is ridiculous.
No religion catches flak like Christians for believing what their religion teaches…in a country that endorses freedom of religion.
Hey, if you don’t like what the bible teaches, you are free to believe something else & practice a different religion. Do Christians try to tell other religions what they can & cannot believe as a religion?

Posted on September 20, 2012 at 6:14pm@VOICE … A certain percentage of Christians are evangelical because they are (misguidedly) trying to save lost souls…. like yours. They’re no more in your face than other religions are- or Atheists named “Voice of Reason” are for that matter…. Stand up for YOUR beliefs. Can you do it in a way that doesn’t expose you for being the arsehole that you are? THIS is your challenge in life. Be better.

Posted on September 21, 2012 at 8:10amChristians believe in spreading the word of god to anyone who will listen, muslims believe in beheading anyone who will not submit to allah, and yes islam is a religion of peace, but to them peace is what happens after you cleanse the earth with the blood of christians and jews.

A man steals your grandfather clock, and she would be insulted if you called him a thief.
There ARE absolutes in the real world, Soledad, it matters not if you are offended; lying is sin, stealing is sin, covetousness is sin, pride is sin, adultery is sin, homosexuality is sin. That is not Mr. Osteens opinion, it is God’s.
He is simply relaying the message.

Posted on September 20, 2012 at 1:38pmHe has no answer because he’s afraid to defend the gospel. This is the price for compromising on the gospel. The Bible does not call us to persecute sinners, but to lift up Christ and let His word shine the light of truth on the surrounding darkness. I don’t remember Paul ever saying that he stayed in his lane when it came to proclaiming the truth. His answer should have been, “we are all sinners!” Being nice and appeasing got him run over in this ambush. Enjoy the profits from your cheap gospel, Mr. Osteen.

Posted on September 20, 2012 at 3:40pmSoledad doesn’t understand about morals. The current society is “do what makes you feel good.” That may be the secular way, but don’t expect God to agree with it. The Bible is a book to help guide people in their morals & ethics. Is Soledad going to be praising the virtues of beastiality in 10 years?
