Turn on the news and it’s a little hard to see the funny side. That’s where John Bobey comes in. “We’re the spoonful of sugar that helps the medicine go down,” he says.
Bobey is the senior writer for Glenn Beck’s mock-presidential debate comedy tour “Unelectable.” Tonight is the last date for the tour and performed at the Majestic Theatre in San Antonio. HD movie theaters across the country will carry it live.
Due to the improvisational nature of large portions of the show, pitched as a “plain spoken, common sense” approach to politics (ie. “unelectable”), none of the shows are exactly the same. But this last one will be almost entirely different from the rest. “In the last 36 hours, it’s gone through a significant rewrite,” Bobey, who has worked with Beck for six years, tells TheBlaze. Bobey said last-minute changes to any of Beck’s productions are not uncommon. “He’s so immersed in the present day politics and current events, Beck always wants to make [his shows] reflective of his most recent thoughts,” he says.
Of course, a lot has happened over the last several days. A U.S. ambassador was killed in Libya. A video surfaced of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney seeming to dismiss nearly half of America as self-pitying victims. President Obama had a similar problem: an audio clip from the late ’90s — in which he says “I actually believe in redistribution” — made its way into the news. With all of that, Bobey, along with Beck and the cast of the TheBlaze’s B.S. of A., have to produce a two-hour show that makes people think about things in a new way. But even more difficult, Bobey has to make people laugh about it.
It was Beck’s daily show on Fox News that vastly expanded his fan base and earned him name recognition even among non-news watchers. It began in 2009 as a current affairs program modeled much like Beck’s radio show: a mix of comedy, interviews and commentary on the day’s news. By the time it ended in 2011, the show had gained a reputation for being almost entirely serious. Bobey recognizes that as a challenge.
“Being funny about things is always tough,” he says. “Fans of Glenn who came aboard in the Fox days, may not be aware at how adept Glenn is at comedy. That may be a surprise. But he’s not only a conservative commentator, he’s a genuinely funny person. You can make an incredibly serious point through humor.”
Bobey says so far, the show works. “The ever-evolving nature of the show… is Glenn believing very strongly in what an audiences wants to hear and needs to hear: Rallying and entertaining,” he says. “What makes Glenn so popular is that he feels a real kinship of the audience. He has a sense of what they will like and usually he’s very right.”
The show starts 8 p.m. ET. Find participating theaters and purchase tickets HERE.

Sep. 21, 2012 at 2:28amIt’s hysterical to see all these Beck haters come in here and say these wild things. You sure it’s us who are blind and can’t think for ourselves? Maybe you guys have been drinking too much koolaid, you got your head so far up the mainstream media’s ass, you forgot what the sun looked like, and forgot to even care. Everything Glenn has been saying has come true, yet you idiots refuse to accept it. But that’s understandable for fools who think MSNBC, ABC, or CBS are credible news channels.

Sep. 21, 2012 at 7:17amSTOP SAYING MAINSTREAM.
We are making too many excuses with the media and just blaming them all on being too liberal and that is why we don’t get our message across.
That is a garbage message.
I actually like GBecks
But can not stand Hannity, Rush, Coulter, or Laura Ingram.
Ingram is the worst. They all are full of crap and don’t represent the GOP I was raised in and have represented my whole life.
I can’t tune in to her show and hear her complain about the injustice of “Let’s Move” anymore. How desperate have we become for attention that we have to talk about nutrition and making kids exercise. And how much more attention have you raised to the Democratic party?
Just shut up; we have a million-and-one issues going on that NEED to be talked about and we are trashing on a throwaway topic that was, actually, well-intentioned?
She is making herself look stupid, and Republicans as a whole look like we are too inclusive.
I want to win an election, and I want to feel like I can be a good Republican (as I have been as a Republican Congressional aide and campaigner) and still be able to feel okay that I went to college and think a wheat muffin is better than a hamburger in the school lunches that I F’N PAY FOR.

Sep. 21, 2012 at 1:59pmAnd in this paragraph I mentioned Hannity, Rush and Laura… where? I actually don’t listen to Ingram, but I do listen to Rush and Hannity. Rush, meh, I just listen to him when I’m bored, and he does make some good points. I still think Hannity, however is a well-intentioned guy, even though he is a big influential commentator on Fox.
But Glenn, Pat and Stu are my all-time favorite, and most influential team of commentators. They are who I get most of my information from. More so than anyone else in the political world.

Sep. 20, 2012 at 10:36pmIt was not funny. Brian is a horrible comic. Maybe his job is to make Glenn look good. But not funny. The show made some awesome points about we are as a country. Glenn makes history come alive. But he needs to keep his day job and not try comedy.

My husband & I saw it this afternoon and we wept at the realization of how our precious freedoms are being eroded. This movie is very inspirational and points out how God is being removed by a few and how we just accept it. It goes to the heart of America and shows how our military provides freedom for the world and how at home we take it for granted.
At this time in history it is a must see because it will inspire you to fight in whatever capacity you can to preserve and restore our great country. Take tissues.

Sep. 20, 2012 at 4:45pmYeah, Glenn is a propaganda sausage factory. There’s nothing funny about him or the way he’s manipulating the weak minded that actually think he’s on their side. People who still listen to him remind me of the people who still believed in pro wrestling after they admitted it was fake. I know it’s like finding out about Santa Claus but at some point the mindless have to wake up to the fact that anyone with an FCC license or a national radio program is being paid to put on a show. If you don’t believe me try calling him, Laura Ingraham, Michael Savage, Rush Fatf*ck or any other host you think is a free thinker and try to rationally discuss any of the topics they’re not allowed (or refuse to). I called Laura Ingrahm to discuss why I don’t care for Romney as a republican and her call screener wouldn’t allow it, called Savage to talk about the Ayn Rand-style solution to our problems (at an appropriate time) and the call screener hung up on me after I said Ayn Rand, Beck’s screener hung up the second I said Ron Paul – I even tried Coast to Coast AM on NSA whistleblower night; they talked to a guy for 10 minutes about an Osama Bin Laden character in the movie Swordfish rather than take my call where I wanted to suggest a non-violent, quick, easy Objectivist, rational solution to our problems (we all stop paying our taxes the problem solves itself through bankruptcy – no more drones, Stellar Wind, carnivore, echelon etc, etc. We’re paying them to harass us. Sep. 21, 2012 at 2:33amThat is absolutely not true. I know this because, unlike you, I actually listen to these radio hosts. I hear Rush argue with callers all the time, so does Glenn, so does Ingram, Hannity (especially Hannity), and so forth. What exactly are the real issues you claim they aren’t talking about, then? Because I’m hearing them cover literally EVERY SINGLE issue we are facing as a nation right now. If you actually listen to them, you would know that it’s the media that refuses to discuss the real issues. I have learned so much more from listening to these hosts in just a few months than I would if I watched MSNBC for two years straight.

Sep. 21, 2012 at 2:41amWell, I should correct: Glenn doesn’t argue much, because he doesn’t really take callers. He spends most of his show making fun of stupid liberal logic and talking about the real issues which you claim he is not.

Sep. 20, 2012 at 4:32pmIt’s great that Glenn is finally taking his comedy show on the road. I love watching his daily comedy show The Glenn Beck program and I love TheBlaze, one of the best comedy sites there is.
I especially love the comments section on TheBlaze where all Glenn’s fans play along with his act and pretend that all his crazy, wacko comedy bits are based on truth. It’s a riot!

Sep. 20, 2012 at 4:09pmMy husband and I really wanted to go, but $20 a ticket is just more than we can see paying. Something to consider in future, I would have paid an extra $10 dollars to see in on GBTV instead of having to go to the theater and pay such a high price. I’m pretty sure if you can do what you do on GBTV and air it in the theater live, you could find a way to do it live for an extra cost for your paying viewers as well. In fact I remember when I first start watching you, that’s why I became a subscriber before you left fox, you had a live special and I wanted to see it. Sorry I and my husband will have to miss this one.

Sep. 20, 2012 at 1:52pmHaving some fun with an audience helps him lighten his load of stress from his daily mission revealing all the news the other channels will not deliver. The other “reporters” are too cowardly to report the real news because they don’t want the burden of having to drive in a bullet proof car…. BUT if EVERYBODY actually told the truth, then nobody would have to. THE TRUTH LIVES HERE and on Channel 212 at DISH Satellite.
