Rand Paul Says Romney Must Do More to Win Ron Paul Supporters

Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, son of former presidential candidate Ron Paul, says Mitt Romney will need to be more aggressive about fighting for a balanced budget and limited government to win over his father’s supporters.

“You have to really truly believe in balancing the budget,” Rand Paul said in an exclusive interview with TheBlaze. “That means cutting government spending. Slowing down just the rate of growth of government spending probably isn’t going to be enough for a lot of Ron Paul people.”

With the retirement of the senator’s father and libertarian icon, Texas Rep. Ron Paul, at the end of this year, many expect Sen. Paul to play a key role in integrating the message of the GOP’s libertarian-wing into the national party platform for years to come.

In a discussion with TheBlaze Senior Contributor Mallory Factor last week, Sen. Paul saidΒ that the Romney campaign can still win over undecided voters who hadΒ supportedΒ his father’s campaign by fighting for balancing the budget and limited government as outlined in the Constitution.

Sen. PaulΒ announced his support for Mitt Romney in JuneΒ shortly after his father acknowledged in an email to supporters that his delegate total was “not enough to win the nomination.”

The Kentucky senator delivered a key speech at the Republican National Convention last month where he emphasized the American dream and the American people’s personal ingenuity. Outside of the well-received words, his high-profileΒ presence at the convention was important for the national party hoping to win over Republicans and right-leaning independents who supported Ron Paul, a candidate who has still not endorsed Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney. A further rift between the GOP and Ron Paul followers came earlier in the convention when delegates walked off the floor in protest after rules were passed that they saw aimed at curbing the power of grassroots supporters.

In a recent visit to TheBlaze office in New York, Sen. Paul said that although he wants to see Mitt Romney beat President Barack Obama this November, if Republicans do win the White House and a majority in the Senate, he is not aΒ guaranteeΒ to vote down the party line if they do not present ideas to realistically address the problems our nation faces.Β The senator said specifically that he is”not aΒ guaranteeΒ to vote for a Republican budget either, unless it balances in a finite period of time.”

The Pauls’ libertarian brand of conservatism has attracted attention for its ability to reach out to voters that the Republican Party has often had difficulty connecting to–like younger Americans and anti-war advocates.Β Sen. Paul told Mallory Factor that he believes the GOP could make gains in Democratic strongholds in the Northeast or West Coast by appealing to libertarian-minded voters with less aggressive positions on foreign policy and moreΒ tolerant views on issues relating to marijuana sentencing.

Having recently returned to Congress after summer recess, Sen. Paul also explained why Republicans in Washington have not been able to repeal Obamacare, and what they will do moving forward on this issue and addressing executive overreach on foreign policy.

Watch Sen. Rand Paul discuss these issues with TheBlaze below:

In CONTROL, Glenn Beck presents a passionate, fact-based case for guns that reveals why gun control isn’t really about controlling guns at all; it’s about controlling us. Find out more HERE.

The Republicans and Democrats can play with there sock puppets all they want, people are starting to wake up and grow up and realize the puppet show is just that its a show. It doesn’t really matter…There is no room for a non-fascist in either party.

Systems are always perfectly designed for the results they obtain. Despite a carefully kept delusion to the contrary, the individuals in the various political seats make no real difference.

We once had a system that achieved the results it was designed for. We had sound money and apportioned tax system and therefore natural limits on government.

Idiots, criminals and demagogues have monkey hammered it beyond any semblance of what it once was over the last hundred years. The system is co-opted. The general public doesn’t even understand the reason for sound money and apportioned taxes anymore. Don’t blame them, its not taught in any schools. Fix or replace? We would need a President, a Senate majority and a House majority all willing to take a chainsaw to the Fed and the DC bureaucracy at at the same time putting their of their lives and livelihoods at risk. Uh not going to happen in this system.

At this point, replace is the only answer. Time for a reset. Neither Democrats or Republicans can get the job done.

I called my county courthouse to find out what other options I have to renounce my Republican affiliation since I have become aware of it’s joining the Communist/Democrat affiliation..they told me that I could register as a Libertarian..or a no party affiliation..but I have to be registered as a Republican or a Democrat to vote in the primaries..that sounds fair and Constitutional..no? Since the only ones who can possibly win are the Communist Republican of the same Communist Democrat Party..Isn’t this fun?

i dropped my republican registration right after the primary’s and the rules change to kill grass roots (tea party/libertarian) movements.. i happen to be in a open primary state now due to a ballot initiative, but i would have changed it no matter where i lived. it is a simple way to protest, EVERY OPEN PRIMARY STATE SHOULD LOOSE “”ALL”" of ITS REGISTERED REPUBLICAN VOTERS . all the closed primary states should loose all their registered republicans until just before the next primary. Let me make this simple… if you don’t go along with 100% of EVERYTHING the libertarians preach, you are suddenly a “constitution-hating communist progressive.”

Sounds to me like the Ron Paul supporters need to do more to win Mitt Romney supporters. Constantly insulting us will NOT help your cause.

I don’t care what Mitt Romney says. I will not vote for him no matter what. Just like Clinton said in the 90β€²s: β€œThe era of big government is over” only to try to do the opposite. Thank God we had a republican congress to stop him..

Vote on Principle and don’t bow down to these establishment hacks. The establishment GOP hes given us Romney, McCain, Bush Jr, Dole, Bush Sr, and they fought against Ronald Reagan, who was the only good candidate and president.

Vote for Libertarian Gary Johnson this one time to send a message that we don’t like what the establishment GOP had forced down our throats. If Obama gets elected it means we will get an even stronger grass roots organisation going to give us more small government Congressmen, Senators, and Governors, as we have seen since Obama’s election.

But if we get rid of Obama, what will we then get with the Democrat Mitt, other than a false sense of security which will lull big government opposition to sleep, while Mitt goes on to do what he has always done, and that is being expedient, and not principled. I dislike Obama as much as anyone of you, but I like this Nation more than I dislike Obama.

      What does Mitt believe anyway?

It has been this way all along, with articles that goes against TheBlaze’s agenda. Especially when there are comments written like yours and mine that are Pro Liberty and Freedom, and against what TheBlaze is pushing. But now they can say that they did post an article to save face. Even though it is done at a time when few have a chance to see it, and soon to be hidden, to make room for a National Enquirer type article, or a GB puff piece.

I think a lot of you get the Paul supporters wrong. I have always liked many of Ron Paul’s ideas, but was like a lot of you on here that his foreign policy was wrong. I am beginning to think that he is more right than wrong on his foreign policy. I am beginning to believe we have make a huge mistake picking Mitt Romney over Ron Paul. I can say that Ron Paul, if he had become the nominee, would not have allowed the rule changes that caused the rift in our party now. This article try’s to make you believe that the rules changes problem is with Paul supporters only, but that is not true. I was planning on voting for Romney until that happened, and a lot of people like me are doing the same. I am voting for Gary Johnson, and I believe that Mitt Romney will not have a chance to win, because of how he and the RNC handled the primary and the convention. I know that Romney will not get the Paul supporters, no way. Go to the Paul sites and read what they say, they are not going to no matter what Romney says, Rand is being delusional and many Paul supporters have turned their back on him also.

Welcome to the truth. I like you voted for Mitt in 08′. Only after that I wanted to prove to myself that Ron Paul was crazy since that is what talk radio and Fox news told me to think. After reading Ron Paul Revolution and allot of history that he pointed to I came to realize that he was right and I was wrong, and thereby became a Ron Paul supporter. One thing that the establishment republicans don’t understand about us, is that what we support is not just Ron Paul (the honest politician), but his ideas and the logic and history that backs them up. So even if Ron Paul where to campaign for Mitt, I would not vote for Mitt, as he is a weak kneed Democrat at best, and unfortunately many Americans would go back to sleep if Mitt got elected, thinking that he will fix things, which he won’t. Yes, he will help the economy in the short run, but at the cost of loosing the small government momentum that caused the historic election in 2010.

Ron Paul is a philosophy, and who best will stand up for that?

The ones who pushed the button for Romney had their chance. It was the ONLY chance to elect a TRUE and HONEST Paleo-Conservative to the White House and you blew it. You let Clear Channel Radio (Bain Capital) shills like Beck, Levin, Shammity, and Rush influence your thinking, and you made excuses to yourself thinking β€œwell at least he’s not a commie.”
The blame will be ON YOUR SHOULDERS, not ours. We tried (sometimes impatiently) to warn you that the house was on fire, and that Ron Paul was the ONLY one who showed up with a firetruck, while the others stood there with buckets of water and in some cases gasoline.

You denied the one who had more support from the military than ALL of the others combined, and INSTEAD voted for the one who had the most support of the BANKERS and other special interests that got us into this mess in the first place. You sat there and yapped and quivered like a bunch of chi hua huas when it came to a pip squeak nation like Iran who can’t even produce enough gasoline for their country, and was NEVER a threat to us.
You sniveled like little school children about how you weren’t going to support Paul β€œbecause of his supporters” and ignored the opportunity of a lifetime instead.

Make no mistake. The BLAME WILL BE ON YOUR SHOULDERS, because it won’t just be RP supporters not voting for him, it will be independents and disenfranchised Dems as well, because they realize that it’s just another Goldman Sachs vs Goldman Sachs contest

      @p8triot and 13thimam,

It wouldn’t take too much to win Ron Paul supporters over, or at least me. All I need is a real budget plan from Romney that aims to balance the budget within his term (not 28 years) and begin paying off the national debt. I can live with all of his other progressive crap, but I draw the line at the money because that is what will take this country down, not the Muslim Brotherhood. If we don’t get a handle on the money NOW, it won’t matter who gets elected, the results will be the same. If Romney doesn’t come around, he won’t get my vote.
He shifts with the wind so much that I’m not sure I’d believe him anyways.

@13THIMAM In a race this tight and with the democrats and republicans in this country so evenly split it might just be that the small minority of third party independent voters have the most power. You better hope that isn’t the case because Romney is in trouble if it is. Also if Romney does lose then third party independent voters will have all the power and we will choose the next republican candidate instead of FOX news and Karl Rove. It might be worth four more years of Obama to have that power. I have confidence that whoever the president is I will continue to succeed because I don’t let government or the president determine my fate and neither should you. The only thing worse than democrats lies are republicans excuses!

@SquareHead, Yes, I woke up, as you say, after the convention. After the power grab that the RNC and Romney campaign did, I was beside myself. I was already disgusted at what they had done to Ron Paul, and it wasn’t even needed, that I decided right there not to vote for Romney. Then when the Democrats did the same thing at their convention, I realized that they are no different, and is why we are in such bad shape. Neither party cares about us, they only care about themselves and their power at all costs. It was at that point that I first wished I had done more for Ron Paul and that Gary Johnson was going to be my pick. It would be Paul now if he was to enter the race somehow. I apologize to all of you for not helping. Now we need to stop the socialistic machine in both parties and vote them the heII out!

What counts is that you are awake. What the establishment don’t understand that this is not a “Yes we can” emotional movement. So the establishment has completely missed the mark. The R3VOLUTION is a an awareness based on the Constitution, History and Proven Fact, and that is not even tied to Ron Paul, though he was the one that awoke me from my apathy. The thing is that ones so know that the world is round, you can’t go back and pretend that it is flat..

It reminds me of a quote a quote I read that went something like this: “Ones the mind has been stretched out with a new truth, it can never go back to its original shape”

So the R3VOLUTION now is moving behind Gary Johnson, and if he commits suicide, between now and the election write in Ron Paul.

Some poeple have the idea to always vote for the right-most electable candidate that can possibly win. >>>>>The problem with that advise is you can do just that and still drift ever leftward and/or statist. This is what has happened for about 100 years. We have drifted leftward even though we have had Republicans and Democrats in power.

The trajectory of our Republic is towards the Left. This can only stop if WE MAKE A STAND and force the issues back to the right. This means the Republicans have to change to get the Ron Paul voters… Not the otherway around.

Ron Paul votes will not…. and should not…. vote for Romney until he takes a plaform that has some resemblance to RP’s main issues. End the FED. Return to sound money. Stop the meddling and protecting the world overseas. Stop the welfare state expansion.

If he truly takes these to the platform, then I would vote for him. Problem is that even if he were to adopt these issues tomorrow, I am not sure I would believe him to actually make effort to impliment them when he is office.

You are saying to always vote for the right-most electable candidate that can possibly win. i.e. Romney >>>>> The problem with that advise is you can do just that and still drift ever leftward and/or statist. This is what has happened for about 100 years. We have drifted leftward even though we have had Republicans and Democrats in power.

The trajectory of our Republic is towards the Left. This can only stop if WE MAKE A STAND and force the issues back to the right. This means the Republicans have to change to get the Ron Paul voters… Not the otherway around

Paul people have a choice .. TYRANNY under Obama … or vote for Romney and pray that he does what is right … I think he is a good man .. a man of his word.

Romney needs to push a Conservative platform, and if the Paulies don’t like it, or don’t believe it is Conservative enough for them, they can vote for whomever they like. Romney needs to just tell the truth about himself, nothing more, nothing less. Why pander to the Ron Paul kooks?

The debt will be so high and our grandchildren will be paying it. Obama will spend like a wildman if given another 4 years…his very plan for global redistribution.

You guys crack me up. THIS ISN’T HARD! Just take a constitutional platform. That’s it. We don’t want Romneycare. We want our rights that are inalienable to us. We want free markets. We want liberty. We want a constitutional republic.

All this talk about compromise to get rid of BHO is garbage. Our forefathers could have compromised with King George. Did they? Or did they draw a line in the sand? The intolerable acts that started the revolution were nothing compared to what we endure now. They had spines. They had principle and courage and faith. I’m quite sure they’d be sickened by what this nation has become and that people who claim to be for liberty are berating others to vote for a tyrant.

I am not beholden to a party. I put my faith in God and my judgement in the constitution. Those are the only constants anymore. I had great grandfathers at Valley Forge and Lexington. My ancestor didn’t grab his musket and head out the door to stare down a British muzzle so that I could sell out the very concepts of liberty that he was willing to die for and would not compromise upon. Shame on all of you and shame on us as a nation. We were given a gift unlike any in history and you all want to pi$$ it away. That somehow Romneycare and NDAA and the Fed and so on aren’t really that bad and I’m sure our founders would accept them if only they were as smart as us.

I’ll die on principle before I gloat in victory as a serf like you all. Sam Adams was

A vote for The Big O, is a vote for The Big O, and a fascist/socialist/communist system (the merger of these will be “Americanist”, enhanced and safeguarded by the technological snoopery they’re putting in place).

A vote for RINOmney, is a vote for RINOmney, and a fascist/socialist/communist system, the same as The Big O. If you don’t believe me, just look at their records. It’s all right there, in black and white.

If I vote for The Big O, I vote against RINOmney? No, I vote for The Big O. If I were to vote for RINOmney, I would be voting FOR HIM, and not AGAINST The Big O.

But, neither of these two scoundrels has given me ANY REASON TO VOTE FOR HIM.

Why should I consider four more years of Obama, to be any worse than four years (with a locked-in-cannot-be-challenged-thank-you-rules-change option on EIGHT years) of RINOmney?

Thanks, but no thanks. I’ll vote for Johnson, with a mostly clear conscience.

The system is going down, either way. It is mathematically impossible for it to continue much longer, without causing MORE hardship when it collapses, than it would to put in someone SANE to actually FIX THE PROBLEM.

While you Republicans point a finger at us, who said early on that we simply could not, and would not, vote for RINOmney, make sure to studiously ignore the three fingers you’ve pointed at yourselves.

The US has since been run as a Corporation..we all have numbers and are sold on the auction block like cattle..The Congress answers to the un federal reserve in place of US citizens.. The un federal reserve takes all of our tax money and loans it back to us at a ridiculously high rate of interest.. If Romney were a Christian..If Romney wasn’t financed by the un federal reserve’s Sharia Compliant Banks..if he weren’t for the taking of our freedoms..through NDAA, the Patriot Act..gun control. global warming, higher taxation. if he hadn’t created and supported Obamacare..and if when his lips were moving..he wan’t lying..then we might support Romney..but how can we feasibly support a liberal running as a Conservative.?.

The question is, who is the offended party? Your answer to that will determine who needs to placate whom.

I am voting for Romney, but not with great enthusiasm. I feel that the tea party and liberty got a heavy kick in the A** by the RNC elites.
But I also agree with Rush Limbaugh, that a vote for anyone but Romney is not a protest vote, is not a “I’m gonna show these idiots in Washington!”, it’s simply a vote for Barry, whether you like it or not.

Ardent Ron Paul supporters and many Libertarians are planning to write in a cantidate, or sit it out. I think (as many have suggested) offering Ron Paul a serious cabinet position like Treasury Sec would go a long way in shoring up his base.

Going after these elusive Reagan democrats, and undecided risks losing his base. Swinging to the left to catch these people in the middle is not worth it in this election.

Wherefore thus saith the Holy One of Israel, Because ye despise this word, and trust in oppression and perverseness, and stay thereon: Therefore this iniquity shall be to you as a breach ready to fall, swelling out in a high wall, whose breaking cometh suddenly at an instant.

    Isaiah 59:12-14
For our transgressions are multiplied before thee, and our sins testify against us: for our transgressions are with us; and as for our iniquities, we know them; In transgressing and lying against the Lord, and departing away from our God, speaking oppression and revolt, conceiving and uttering from the heart words of falsehood. And judgment is turned away backward, and justice standeth afar off: for truth is fallen in the street, and equity cannot enter.

These are shadows; not only of the past, but of the things to come.

Romney tries to make his demeanor Reaganesque but it’s off-putting. He’s more a kindly but odd Stepford Husband. I think he means well and would be an effective president, though he’s far too RHINO for my taste– I support(ed) Ron Paul, (though he is clueless when it comes to the threat of Islam.) Romney should let Ryan loose more and learn to attack Obama instead of being mushy. Remember this is Romney’s SECOND time running for prez, he should be far better at it than he is. Also, Obama wanted to run against Romney, cause he believes he can easily beat him. I fear for our country

” With his air of reasonableness and moderation, he has projected a remarkably likable persona. Even in the midst of a historically dirty campaign for re-election, his likability numbers remain impressive, as seen in a recent AP-GFK Poll that found 53 percent of adults have a favorable view of him.

But beyond the spin and the polls, a starkly different picture emerges. It is a portrait of a man quite unlike his image, not a visionary reformer but rather a classic Chicago machine pol who thrives on rewarding himself and his friends with the spoils of public office, and who uses his position to punish his enemies. ”

I think this is a must read !!!

Soy, I know you think that after four more years of Obama, people will be ready for R.P.’s message and a new Constitutional America will rise from the ashes, but the country may not survive four more years of Obama. If the U.S. goes the way of the Soviet Union, do you honestly think we will not be invaded and conquered? We could have done that to Russia when the S.U. crumbled, but it’s not how we operate. The same can’t be said of our enemies.

That’s a sweeping generalization. Furthermore, it’s pretty well spun to distort the truth. That isn’t fair. Let’s see how it works the other way shall we?

Romney should just appeal to his base and forget the PaulBots. We need to print more money and put it into Freddie, Fannie and bank balance sheets while essentially stealing wealth from everyone. He should better articulate his strategy of world domination and threaten all nations. In fact, let’s do some more invasions and blow some folks up. We need to continue the bloated government, crony capitalism and massive deficits. We should continue to ignore civil liberties and expand the police state to keep people safe even if that means we go into their homes electronically. We should simply tweak the nationalized health care and reinforce how free markets don’t work and that government should “fix” them. We should continue taking from our children by borrowing from the Chinese and/or printing so that we can give money to other nation’s dictators and if they don’t take the money we’ll blow them up.

How’s that work? Spun generalizations are fun eh Squid? Either engage in a debate or don’t but the Alinsky stuff is just distasteful.

Well… Mr. Constitution, I’m sure you know what is required to amend the Constitution. Good luck getting that done with the expressed purpose of legalizing crack, cocaine, heroine, etc… That’s a political winner. A super majority of Congress and 2/3 of the states to ratify. @squid,

I took the oath. I served in Desert Storm. I re-enlisted for Operation Iraqi Freedom. US Army both times. The oath doesn’t end when you take off the uniform.

If you think you are defending the constitution by not only voting for a guy that tramples upon it but chastising those who call that point out then you need to look up the word “defend”.

Unless somebody stands up for right and wrong this train keeps veering to totalitarianism. You’re acceptance of this baloney 2 choice fake construct is the problem. Telling someone that votes for the constitution (I’m voting fore Goode) that they are the problem is simply your way of dealing with the emotional baggage of selling out your posterity.

If your oath means something to you then don’t vote for someone who’s policies are in defiance of the constitution.

      @Squid,

Yes I’m fully aware. There is a reason that the founders made it so hard to amend the constitution. Because the federal government isn’t supposed to have over 200,000 pages of laws. The government isn’t supposed to control every aspect of your life with creeping incrementalism. You want to ban drugs? Fine. Our founders had a means to do so. That’s why we had the 18th amendment. It wasn’t until afterwards that the statists got together and said that’s hard let’s just run an end around on that scrap of paper.

And BTW, you don’t have to amend it to LEGALIZE it. You have to amend it to BAN it. What planet did you go to school on where it says in the constitution that X, Y and Z chemicals are prohibited? EVERYTHING was either enumerate, legal or left to the states. There was no default federal illegality other than infringing upon the rights of the people.

It’s a shame when you have to pander for votes. Doing what’s right for the country should be enough. We are so divided as a country…

I like Ron Paul! I like Gary Johnson! But C’MON folks. If looking at the big picture is not at this moment in time, the most important thing, we could be facing four more years of incremental tyranny!

I posit that we are facing four more years of incremental tyranny, no matter WHICH of the two major party candidates are “elected”.

      Prove me wrong, please.

If I want inspiration I’ll watch G.B. If I want balanced budget, not being a slave to foreign oil, more jobs,
a Stronger Nation that adheres to the principals of the Constitution, a Leader who will Lead and not bow down when it concerns the very existence of myself and my family, I will vote Romney 2012!

An eye-popping sixteen trillion dollar national debt affects 100% of the population, so this country has passed the point of pontification.
