Stunning Vid: Soccer Player Throws ‘Grenade’ Off Field Seconds Before It Explodes

Video footage showing players milling around a field during a club soccer match in Isfahan, Iran, captures several objects on the ground. Some of them appear to be trash or plastic bags. One of these objects though turns out to be an explosive.

The footage posted on YouTube shows a player picking up what is being described as a live “grenade” (although it doesn’t seem it is a grenade in the traditional sense of the word), seemingly not recognizing what it was, and throwing it casually off the field seconds before it went off.

Watch the scene:

Some of the players ran away from the explosion while another walked near the smoking area and seemed to throw up his hands in frustration.

The footage posted on YouTube by ThePrincessHira states:

During a local club match in Isfahan,Iran some spectators threw a hand grenade on field,a player found it and thought it was some other object and threw it on sidelines just in time,if he had done this a few seconds later his hand would have been blasted.

Business Insider reports that the match between Iran’s Sephan FC and Saudi Arabia’s al-Ahli SC was part of the quarterfinals for the Asian Championships League. It states that the incident occurred last night.

The motive behind the explosive being on the field is unclear. Ironically, The Metro points out that it “came shortly after the UN’s International Atomic Energy Agency expressed concern that Iran had continued to defy directives over uranium enrichment and nuclear weapons development.”

Digital Journal makes note of a member on Reddit saying incidents such as these, although perhaps not commonplace, are not unheard of. The user pedroabr writes:

I was watching the match live … and I’m Iranian …. many years ago fans used this handmade grande to through it near to the field when 2 famous Iranian football club( Esteghlal _ Perspolise) were playing against each other. specially after scoring each goal …. there were tens of these grande used to be explode on those days … now a days police search every single person for many times before they get in … but still they manage to bring these handmade grande inside of stadium

The description of the video states that the game was called off after the incident and police are conducting an investigation.

“grenade”? my backside!! more like a firecracker!! I bet they will blame it on the Jews?!?! 15 meters is the wounding area of a “grenade” 5 meters is the “killing radius”………Blaze you really need to either fire or hire a military advisor!! I guess they were all out of them when you raided the huffington post huh?

      Agreed.

That wasn’t a grenade It was a rather puny Prank or an IED that didn’t work. A grenade would have made a much bigger bang, and fragmentation would have turned a few of those guys into a bloody screaming mess.

Wonder if it was the Sunnis wanting to blow up the Shiites or the other way around? Definitely not a military grendade. More likely an Iranian IED (Impotent Explosive Device).

Right. But we’d better send thousands of our guys over there to get wounded and die in defense of …um… whichever side our fearless leaders (Obama OR Romney) decide to defend. What? No Americans are under attack? The constitution is in no danger from this quarter? Who cares? Today’s M80 is tomorrow’s nuke, right? Actually declaring war via our congress as the constitution states is for sissies and nut burgers, right?

You who vie for global gun (or nuclear weapon) control should be deprived of your guns here at home.

We sissies and nut burgers will calmly prepare to vigorously defend any direct attack here on our homeland.

      gre·nade/grəˈnād/

      Noun:

1.A small bomb thrown by hand or launched mechanically.

You guys are right…that device is no “grenade” in the classical meaning of the word, a frag as Ranger rightly points out would have shredded those players with lots of small hot bits o death while an HE device would have knocked them over, punctured ear drums and maybe caused internal injuries to the players closest to the blast. A stun “grenade” does not have that amount of how shall I put it, red and orange component to the explosion while a flash bang is all noise but again without the red orange burn. What this looks like is a IED using some kind of low yield or out of date cordite. The brown hue to the smoke gives it away somewhat. Cordite was used in the late 19th century all the way into Viet Nam….some WWII era munitions were used in the first Gulf War (the Iowa class battleships use bags of cordite as the propellant for it’s main gun batteries 16 inch shells). Anyway…that player is lucky he didn’t lose his hand or his life. Good thing no one was hurt.

Just have to say, the flames look more like a petrol conflagation as opposed to an explosion. Hi Explosives don’t have roiling balls of flame. AND the smoke that bellows out from the center isn’t right. Smoke usually forms past the ends of the flames, not the source. I’m calling BS, its a smoke device that somebody “photoshopped” the flames to.

The smoke billowed to quickly and didn’t bloom as it would from a normal smoke device unless it was one that had a big percussive bang to it.

Those players ran in fear, if it were just smoke most people would react by looking for the small fire in an attempt to put it out. The flash seemed accurate for the flash of a nice sized firework. This is real vid, no doubt.

That wasn’t a standard grenade from any military, nor do I think it was a high explosive, unless it was just a few ounces.

A standard grenade is about a pound or pound n’ half of TNT. Wrapped in a body of steel designed to fragment into wicked slivers about the size of a fingernail. This steel shrapnel is whipped out at nightmarish velocity, and I can tell you for certain that some of those guys standing around would have looked like bloody shredded beef after the blast.

The explosion was also rather puny. I think it was some kind of improvised device, poorly made or a prank.

The grass was pretty tall, if you look the shoes are half covered by it. The thing that is strange is that when he releases the object, first it looks as though its trajectory is going to land in front of the fence, but then his arm continues and the object reappears and passes over the fence. I think the poster Photoshopped in the first object to make sense of the location of the explosion, not realizing it happened just past the fence and blew through into the field. It was pretty loud because they all ducked, and ran as if on cue after the explosion, I think the poster added confusion by showing a false object.
