War on Football: TX School District Bans Christian Banners at Football Games
Just months before the annual War on Christmas is slated to kick-off, atheist activists are tackling yet another target — football. TheBlaze has covered a number of stories involving non-believers and their campaign to eradicate any semblance of religion from public high school and college teams. In the latest example, Kountze Independent School District has officially banned run-through banners that contain religious messages — an act that has set off a firestorm of controversy.
According to Fox 33, the trouble started after cheerleaders in the city of Kountze came up with the idea to add Bible verses to banners after attending a cheer camp. The words of encouragement were intended to inspire the football team, but following a complaint, the district’s superintendent Kevin Weldon has banned any and all religious-themed designs.
KSNW-TV has more:
“Coaches preach devotionals before games. We wanted to show our support for our boys,” explained Meagan Tantillo, the young woman who came up with the initial idea to use Christian-based signage.
The superintendent has been tight-lipped about who made the complaint that led to the ban on Christian run-through banners. However, he has admitted that he was reluctant to comply.
“It is not a personal opinion of mine,” Weldon explained in an interview with KVUE. “My personal convictions are that I am a Christian as well. But I’m also a state employee and Kountze ISD representative. And I was advised that that such a practice (religious signs) would be in direct violation of United State Supreme Court decisions.”
Rather than sitting back passively, the town’s 2,100 residents are apparently talking feverishly about the situation — and taking action.
Tantillo and her fellow students responded by making Christian signs and presenting them at the school’s volleyball game this week. The football players, among others, are also supporting the girls’ efforts.
“We aren’t backing down,” claims Tantillo, as the students plan to find ways to infuse faith into games as much as possible moving forward.
A Facebook page currently shows more than 33,100 people signing on to support Kountze High School students in their ongoing battle.

However, Weldon has made it clear that legal counsel recommended that religious activities not be carried out, even if the are being organized and implemented by students.
“Per the advice of TASB Legal, please do not allow any student groups to display any religious signs or messages at school-sponsored events,” the superintendent wrote in a letter to parents who are involved in organizing extracurricular activities. “I appreciate your immediate attention and conveying this to your staff and sponsors of student groups. For example, the run-through signs at the football games.”
So far, despite the district’s mandates, it appears the battle is far from over, as atheist activists’ “War on Football” wages on.

If the banner were held by family and friends in the crowd, I don’t see any problems. But really, what is the point? Is it really appropriate to be invoking God for a football game? Does it mean when a team loses that God is mad at them? Too many people on both sides of this issue are WAY too eager to fight battles indiscriminately, without regard to finding a a reasonable basis to respect the other side. This is just one more example of that.

Simple prayer asking for God to grant us a game without injury – both for us and our opponents. And should it turn out that way – Grant us the victory. (sounds a little selfish doesn’t it? :) But… we won state my junior year.
Article is titled wrong. It’s not a war on football. It’s a war against Christianity. Did you watch the vote at the DNC? They DENIED God – 3 times. My jaw dropped. It was the Bible coming to life.
No doubt about it folks… have you and your house in order. Be right with God. World events are swirling like we’ve never seen before.

You’ve been brainwashed to believe that kids have no right to express their freedom of religion and to assemble peacefully… wait, i think I heard that somewhere before. Yes, the Constitution.
All countries have their Heritages/Culture and system in which they were founded on. In the Middle East they have Sharia, in most South America Catholicism and in the USA, Judea Christian values. Like it or not, this is our culture and to speak freely of Jesus is a free choice we have. When a PUBLIC entity says “NO”, then it is Unconstitutional. It is freedom OF religion not FROM! This is our culture and heritage, if you don’t like it that’s fine…you don’t have to. But I have no sympathy for those who dare stop it and slander those that believe. BTW, it’s such a horrible religion… teaching people to love, have morals and be accountable. Our freedom is based off the God given rights and that’s why this country is great!

Nobody is saying private individuals can not hold signs in the stands and say private prays. The Problem is the Cheerleader squad, in uniform, on the field give the appearance of the School endorsing Christianity. If this was a private school, there is no problem, its a public school funded by tax payer dollars.

If someone else wants to write a banner for all the other relgions let them do so and fly them at the games. If the freakin’ atheist want to wish them luck because they feel we got here by happenstance then let the do so.
This isn’t about what is on the banner as much as it is about giving into government and special interest groups our right and freedom to express ourselves.
Instead of just teaching evolution, teach both creatonism and evolution. Instead of banning prayer, open it up with prayer from all and if the atheist don’t want to pray they can spend 1 minute telling us over the loud speaking how stupid we are for praying to a God we can’t see, hear or touch.
Don’t take our right to express ourselves away just so atheist don’t get their feelings hurt because they are afraid we may be right. Give them equal time on the intercom to voice the opinion.
The problem is those atheist are too smart to get up in front of 5 thousand Christians and tell them why they don’t believe, but they have no problem compaining that we are infringing on their rights not to be subjected to prayer. The PC crap needs to come to an end.
Our Secretary of Defense tells us not to talk negatively about Islam and our own government tells us we can’t pray to our own God.

You need to read the U.S. Constitution. First of all it is Freedom of Religion. Second of all neither the school nor the students are the U.S. Congress therefor the display of religious beliefs by them are not in violation of the U.S. Constitution. That would be the 1st amendment that you need to read. Oh heck here I will quote it for you and you can look it up yourself if you are capable.
U.S. Constitution Amendment 1
Congress shall make no law respecting the establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
That’s it. Can’t seem to find where it says a school or students of that school can’t exercise their freedom of religion even if it is on school property. If you can find it please feel free to reply but I would suggest you learn it, love it, and live it. It’s all about freedom.

If the majority of the student body has one similar cultural aspect, than shouldnt they be allowed to express that. Just like the fact that I am a Christian, but I am force to learn about evolution and a history of the worlds origins and how it developed that i dont believe in, but the school systems revoke the thought of teaching the other side of the arguement wwhich is creationism. Many people will fight and say that there is no facts that support creationism, but than why has the bible been proven to be one of the most accurate history books in the world. Instead we learn of the theory of evolution. Our begingings as a single celled organism maturing into a complete being. Even though there has never been a species that has been found that is in the transitional period of one species to the next. This is just one school that has had enough and wants to stand up for their beliefs just like those that have pushed creationist teachings out of schools have been for years. So why is there an up roar? Why should only one side get there way we we are supposed to been in a free nation that is sympothetic to what others believe? Just becuase someone is taught something in school doesnt mean they have to believe it. Just like I dont believe in evolutionist theories, but im not complaining

The executive, The states, The people, The congress. All these branches will fight to the end on that specificity, but the separation of church and state crowd. Why? oh that’s right because it was argued buy the Supreme Court that if it was not the whole government then a state could decide it was going to become baptist. That would just be preposterous so they couldn’t of ever meant that!

The difference is that evolution is science, its a theory that has been tested, refined and retested, its provable . Creationism is nothing more than a myth, no different than any other religion’s creation myth. There is no science to support it, no lab tests to prove it and it can not be changed despite what the evidence demonstrates. Creationism has no business in any school.

Since we are picking apart the constitution. The 14th amendment says nothing about freedom of religion. The only thing close in that amendment is ” No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States” There is no law being passed or enforced by the cheerleaders. Note ALL of the statements about freedoms restrict the government from enacting LAWS that RESTRICT. They do not say opinions and beliefs cannot be expressed. Members of Congress pray all of the time right there in the well of the house oh and btw athiests are welcome to express their beliefs as well. AND by the same token people have the right to complain to the cheerleaders personally to say “hey you know what when you put up that banner I feel excluded” At that point it would be up to the cheerleaders if they want to be respectful of others or not. My hope would be they would but they are FREE to act as they would without the government getting involved.

I would similarly request that it not be associated with a formal group from the school. If the evangelical christian students want to bring the banner to the games great. But any representatives of the school should not be associated with it.

First, if by truth you mean what Beck, Barton and other like them preach, than you are confusing truth with lies.
Second, the 14th Amendment incorporates the bill of rights onto the states and the state entities and agents. Any action by an agent of the state that gives the appearance of an endorsement of religion would be a violation of the Constitution. The Cheerleader Squad, during a school sponsored event, in uniform and in the center of the field displayed a Christian message. It was a clear violation of the Constitution. Your problem is that you are too stupid to realize that Beck and Barton have lied to you. The case law controlling this subject can fill volumes of books, they all dismiss the reactionary teachings of Beck and Barton.
The true issue is that you wish for Christianity to have a special place in American Culture, above all other religions. From the debate regarding marriage equality, to the employment issues regarding woman’s health care and contraceptives, to school pray and teaching science, Conservative Christians are demanding that their religious dogma be supreme to all others and control any questions. Conservative Christians want a back door Theocracy, that only appears like the Secular Republic the Founders left behind.

So you want to win the debate by silencing the other side of it through slander and intimidation. Wonderful use of science – if science is your religion instead of a method of discerning fact. Please show me the science proving evolution. It does not exist, which is why evolution remains a “theory.” Touting it as the, uh-hem, God’s honest truth has no more scientific merit than saying God created it. Unless you have those missing links that none of us know about.
Science is not about providing why, only how. It is only right until it is proven wrong. At one time, the best minds in the world that it was a flat disk. Now we know better. Real scientists know this and know that today’s truths are tomorrow’s half truths (Sir Isaac Newton’s 3 Laws, anyone?).

Theory: a coherent group of tested general propositions, commonly regarded as correct, that can be used as principles of explanation and prediction for a class of phenomena.
Its the brain damaged Christians that view the bible as anything more than a collection of myth who are the problem. Their is nor, zero, none, zilch evidence for creationism outside of the bible.
Nor has evolution been disproven, the evidence supporting evolution fills museums world wide as well as University libraries. The American belt to marching back to the dark ages with their rejection of science and reason.

What a lot of schools pay for a coach will get at least 2 regular teachers. Back when I played 50 years ago it was all after school and everything was done with donations includin a coach.

Are they that ignorant? Or are the merely participants in the liberal movement to deprive everyone of their right to express their beliefs wherever they are?

Posted on September 20, 2012 at 5:41pm@sfrich i ran cross country and we always prayed before each race and asked god to keep us safe as we ran and to keep the other runners of the opposing teams safe as well. and all the 4 years that i ran there was never an injury that i can recall. and now that i run at the collage level i will keep praying for my team mates and the other runners who i compete with.

Our law schools have been teaching our lawyers and future judges past court dissensions instead of teaching what the constitution, bill of rights and declaration of independence have had to say. Why do you think that is? Why is it that instead of teaching what IS the SUPREME law of the land they teach our future judges what the judges before them think that law meant when it said ….. (fill in the blank)?
I think you know why that is but you are one of those that think Government is all powerful (or should be) and want this nation to look like the other nations of the world and so you hold up a court ruling instead of what the LAW ACTUALLY SAYS!
I could care less what a judge has to say about our Constitution but I care DEEPLY what that constitution has to say….We all here know that you clearly don’t….you are free of course to move to a country that better suits how you believe…China sounds like a good fit for you.

But I will go out on a limb and say the 14th Amendment was ratified after the International Banksters seized this Country due to the Federal Reserve Act of 1913.
That was the year income tax began, and I know the 16th amendment was never ratified and came after 1913.
I am sure the Founding Fathers would have never passed a 14th or 16th Amendment.
Those are Amendments put in place by the International Global Banksters after their minions – The progressives, infiltrated our government like german co@kroaches !!!!

On Thursday, a judge granted a request by the nonprofit Liberty Institute law firm to temporarily bar the implementation of the ban. It also set a hearing for early October when the sides will be able to make their arguments. The cheerleaders planned to raise their 20-foot banners at Thursday evening’s junior varsity football game.

Find other parents who are upset by this and stand together and fight. Money is the biggest factor here. If students aren’t in the classroom, the school doesn’t get paid.

Posted on September 20, 2012 at 9:50amWhat if the school’s cheer-leading squad was coached by a Hindu? And she (the coach) required her girls to carry a banner that had Hindu quotes on it to every game? As a Christian parent of one of the cheerleaders, how would you feel?
What if your son was a football player, and he was a Muslim, and he wanted there to be a banner for just one game that displayed Islamic teachings — but the school said no way?
The bottom line is that there are plenty more good reasons to limit school-sponsored religious displays than there are to allow any public school to display whatever it wants.

Freedom from religion means the state is not allowed to command you to worship in any way. Nothing in this equates into license to stop people who believe from expressing their religion. For over 200 years this nation remained strong and things were fairly good here. Free thinking people knew a group expressing their views did not imply they had to hold them. This way of life occurred from the government down to local events such as praying before a game. They prayed in congress, in football games, in general wherever they felt it was appropriate. Hell is all around us with violence and hard times coming in from all sides. This is the evidence of your way and I much prefer my way, the way it was for the first 200 years and more in America. You people have twisted everything and we are spiraling down into desolation, violence, poverty, and tyranny.
My way, the original way was good.

We paid for it with our taxes, it is a public place and as citizens the children have a right to express themselves. The building is owned by American citizens, not the government. The government didn’t build it, the tax payers did. All the government did is provide the process for which it came about, i.e. give the contract to the local union contractors.
Suck my toes and fingers, kiss my elbows and feet. If they don’t want to read it don’t, if they don’t want to pray don’t listen.
If these parents were smart they would pull their kids out of this school and place them in a local Christian school where they would recieve no indoctrination to slavery and a much better education. They would also be allowed to freely express themselves at all events.
You atheist, socialist fruit baskets can kiss my kneecaps and suck my earlobes until the cows come home and sit on your face.

What they should do is right after the National Anthem is played by the band, the crowd should recite the Lord’s prayer in unison without direction from anyone from the school.
And all you socialist/liberal armpit sucking non believers can close your little ears and eyes so not to get influenced by the actions of those expressing their faith that you don’t believe in.
It’s amazing to me how intimidated you toad sucking finger licking atheist/socialist are by a God you don’t believe in. So much so that you fight tooth and nail to have it removed from any event you possibly can.
Contrary to belief, government didn’t build this nation, Christians did. If you don’t like it I’m sorry. Do like my forefathers did and find a place you can be happy. This land is our land and by the grace of God we have allowed you to exist in it, but it’s high time we placed you non believing nose sucking atheist/socialist/liberals on a train to Mexico. The coach isn’t forcing anything. This is student led. This case blows wide open that it has never been about “anti-discrimination” on the part of the government. Atheists just want God removed, period.
The “what if they were” argument is getting tiresome. How many who make this argument are actually Muslim? If you are Hindu or Muslim, fine. Otherwise, be quiet. As I have said time and again, they have just as much right as any other faith. If they want to make an encouraging sign for the team based on their faith, then do so. Atheists are the ones making an issue, not people of faith (based off the fact that it is an atheist organization going around the country attacking religious freedom).

We are to strive for good…life is hard enough…and religious fatith is not a fairy tale…the fairy tales came about after many centries (even in anciet times) when there was no tv…radio…ipod…computer, etc. I guess the big bang is what is better? how can happenstance be the way? one day when we die we will find out for sure…I pray that we shall meet there to remember our lives how graced we were to believe…time to God is eternity…not our clock on the wall…

The truth is that the jurisprudence that surrounds the Establishment Clause, that control what the Clause means and how it is enforced, clearly demonstrated that this is a violation of the Constitution. The display of this banner effectively tells the community that the school if officially endorsing the Christian faith and all other beliefs will not be given equal status as such.

On a larger scale we need to get the Feds and the States out of Education and return it to local control. That won’t fix everything but the schools will become more accountable for sure. Peace.

Posted on September 20, 2012 at 8:34amThe formula has pretty much been established….Town, school, organization has a tradition that involves something religious (almost always Christian), a complaint is sent to an anti-religion group with deep pockets (usually by one person), the anti-religion group sends a letter demanding the tradition stop citing a bunch of distorted interpretations of the constitution and containing threats of legal action, the Town, school, organization shuts down the tradition right way from fear of lawsuits. The end.
We Christians sure are a bunch of spineless wimps sometimes. We let these groups do this to us time and time again. We’re loosing the battle.

There is No favortism under the Constitution. We are all CREATED equal !!!!
That does not mean the Government is obligated to maintain one’s Financial Equality !!!!

There, in Houston, TX, you can find a Church that teaches THE TRUTH, Bible Doctrine. There are off-shoots of this Chruch in those States, in the Bible Belt, who have a population of at least 100-thousand.
In those States where religion is taught, you will find many churches.

Well, how would you feel if at the next game, the cheerleaders held up a quote from the Koran or some other Islamic symbol. It would be the Christians screaming then. No – separation of church an state is the right thing for this Country. The cheerleaders represent the school, and thus cannot promote any religious views while they are representing their public school, as per U.S. Supreme Court ruling and the Constitutional Amendment 14. If they were just sitting in the stands and were waving a banner or praying, while not representing the school, then they are free to do this, but not while they are students representing their school.
