On Friday, Chick-fil-A President Dan Cathy said media reports claiming the restaurant chain will no longer give charitable donations to groups that oppose same-sex marriage are untrue.
Cathy issued a statement on former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee’s website, one day after Chick-fil-A released a company statement arguing that their corporate giving has been “mischaracterized” by the media.
“There continues to be erroneous implications in the media that Chick-fil-A changed our practices and priorities in order to obtain permission for a new restaurant in Chicago. That is incorrect. Chick-fil-A made no such concessions, and we remain true to who we are and who we have been,” Cathy wrote in his statement.
The controversy flared up this week when a Chicago politician said the company was no longer giving to conservative groups, like Focus on the Family, that oppose same-sex marriage in exchange for being allowing to open up a restaurant in Chicago.
In its statement Thursday, the Georgia-based company said its corporate giving was not intended to “support political or social agendas” but rather to support “programs that educate youth, strengthen families and enrich marriages, and support communities.” Read some of the statement below:
For many months now, Chick-‐fil-‐A’s corporate giving has been mischaracterized. And while our sincere intent has been to remain out of this political and social debate, events from Chicago this week have once again resulted in questions around our giving. For that reason, we want to provide some context and clarity around who we are, what we believe and our priorities in relation to corporate giving.
A part of our corporate commitment is to be responsible stewards of all that God has entrusted to us. Because of this commitment, Chick-‐fil-‐A’s giving heritage is focused on programs that educate youth, strengthen families and enrich marriages, and support communities. We will continue to focus our giving in those areas. Our intent is not to support political or social agendas.
As we have stated, the Chick-‐fil-‐A culture and service tradition in our restaurants is to treat every person with honor, dignity and respect – regardless of their belief, race, creed, sexual orientation or gender. We will continue this tradition in the over 1,600 restaurants run by independent Owner/Operators.
The statement did not make any reference to gay marriage.
The company’s response on Thursday, its second in recent days, was posted on its website after Chicago Alderman Joe Moreno announced the alleged policy change. Moreno said the change followed extended negotiations, and as a result, he would no longer try to block a Chick-fil-A restaurant from opening in his district.
Social networking sites lit up following Moreno’s remarks, with many people saying Chick-fil-A had caved to pressure from gay rights organizations.
The Cathy family has always been public about its faith. Since Dan Cathy’s father, Truett, opened the first Chick-fil-A in 1967, the restaurants have been closed on Sundays. The company refused to reconsider the policy during the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, sacrificing even more profit.
Dan Cathy became a flashpoint this summer when he told the Baptist Press that the company was “guilty as charged” for backing “the biblical definition of a family.” In a later radio interview, he ratcheted up the rhetoric: “I think we are inviting God’s judgment on our nation when we shake our fist at him and say, `We know better than you as to what constitutes a marriage.’”
Earlier this week, before the statements, Dan Cathy tweeted to celebrate a fundraiser by Chick-fil-A’s primary charitable arm, the WinShape Foundation. The beneficiary? The Marriage and Family Foundation, which was among organizations cited by gay rights groups as opposing same-sex marriage.
When The Advocate, a leading gay rights publication, called attention to Cathy’s tweet, some civil rights groups quickly reassumed the critical posture they had abandoned only a day earlier.
“Chick-fil-A can’t claim to be turning over a new leaf while simultaneously funneling thousands of dollars towards a group that does not acknowledge the dignity and respect of LGBT people,” said Fred Sainz, a spokesman for The Human Rights Campaign.
In recent years, civil rights advocates have also publicized at least $3 million in contributions the WinShape Foundation has made to conservative organizations such as the Family Research Council. The group’s headquarters was the site of a shooting last month when authorities said a gunman and gay rights supporter, carrying a backpack full of Chick-fil-A sandwiches, opened fired on a security guard.
Chick-fil-A posted more than $4.1 billion in sales last year, most of it below the Mason-Dixon Line. Just 14 of its restaurants are in the six states and the District of Columbia where gay marriage is legal. Massachusetts has just two locations, both more than 10 miles from Boston.
The company reports that its sales figures have increased annually each year of operation.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Sep. 22, 2012 at 12:56amListen up everyone!!! Don’t let your hatred for the liberal media blind you to the facts here. Chick-Fil-A caved just like eHarmony, and now they’re out running ambiguous statements (Huckabee too for that matter) that is intended to serve two masters. The statement is an absolute joke – they’re basically just saying “we’re still Christians” and that’s about it. NOWHERE did they ever directly rebut the claims (by the disgusting liberal media) that they stopped donating to pro-marriage charities.

What part of this did you misunderstand sir? It sounds to me they are supporting groups that make families stronger. Instead of focusing on this, the media and civil rights groups are focusing on whether or not the groups supported are for a certain type of marriage or not. Regardless of what the media says, Chick-fil-a supports the kind of values stated above, type of marriage is really not the issue. Would you rather they donate to a group that supports the weakening of families? I doubt it, so what’s the problem?

Sep. 22, 2012 at 10:00amA lot of people on here seem to want to believe that Chick-Fil-A didn’t cave. I want to believe that too. I don’t think they are suddenly for gay marriage BUT, they never deny they were in negotiations with Moreno. They NEVER deny that they stopped funding some of the charities they use to like Focus on the Family.
I’m sure the deal they struck was to make both sides happy. Focus on the Family is James Dobson’s group and is LOATHED by the left. So maybe they just stop funding them but keep funding their other lesser known charities so they can say they didn’t cave and Moreno can brag that he got the stop funding the “hateful” Focus on the Family organization.
Learn to read the stitches on the fastball. Chick-Fil-A has been issuing the same statement since this happened but HAVE NOT denied the specifics (except for one the groups claim that they never received funds from their charity).
I’m still suspect and I won’t eat there until they specifically say who they did and didn’t stop funding. And I eat there once a week.

That is why Chicago is “allowing” them to open the restaurant, because it is against the law to deny them this privilege because of their religious freedoms. I can’t understand why they would want to open a restaurant in a corrupt, nasty, ungodly city as Chicago….it is becoming another Detroit….I would rather go south, where we all “cling to our Bibles and guns”….you betcha.

Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.” i think he was on to something there. anyone with an understating of the discipleship of christ understands that jesus is love. we are taught to love our neighbor more than ourselves, and everyone is invited to the lord’s table. though someone may not accept the invitation, everyone is invited. nothing in dan cathy’s acts advances christianity or supports christian values. i challenge christians to ask, if jesus were here today, would he support behavior such as this. in the infinite wisdow of christ and lovingkindess, i can’t imagine he wouldn’t scorn dan cathy’s behavior. i wish more christians would sound their trumpets and THINK about the message of Christ and say, this is not who christ is, this is not who were are. we are human, and like jesus, suffer fear, betrayal and death. only through him shall we go to heaven.

Because all good Christians quote Ghandi, a blasphemer who denied Christ. Well, we’re not exactly proud of heretics who displays with zeal their ignorance or disbelief of scripture. Mr. Cathy believes marriage is between a man and a woman (just as Jesus said) that’s somehow un-Christian? What hateful or derogatory action has he taken towards gays? Answer = none. No where am I saying or implying that they are suddenly for gay marriage. What I am saying is that, from all the available information, they ARE NOT DENYING that that stopped funding CERTAIN CHARITIES.
Please, actually read my post before trying to refute it. Listen carefully to his statement and the official Chick-Fil-A statement. While Focus on the Family did not comment, the Family Research Council, the one who the press was making the biggest deal out of, has not received a donation since 2010, and even that was a mere $1,000. The point is, Chick-Fil-A was never really funding these groups in the first place! From the start, the press has cooked up one big fat lie.
Now, if you don’t want to shop there, that is your choice. But Chick-Fil-A is not backing down. They have not changed. The only thing that has changed is the press’s swan-song in the most obvious piece of lies and slandering in recent history.

You also aren’t getting it. I NEVER said that Chick-Fil-A has abandoned their christian principles. I have not called for anyone to boycott them. But, what I said was that Mr. Cathy DID NEGOTIATE with them. That is undisputed. He also did not address all of the charities that had stopped receiving funding from WinShape such as Focus On the Family. Turn a blind eye to that if you like and maybe you have no problem with it. I just believe after the outpouring of support from people to Chick-Fil-A, if they did stop support ONE SINGLE charity in a compromise, we deserve to get the truth about it. That’s all I’m asking for.
It’s hypocritical for us to call out liberals for accepting spin when we are going to swallow it hook, line, and sinker just because we like the person doing the spinning. It’s called intellectual integrity.

“There continues to be erroneous implications in the media that Chick-fil-A changed our practices and priorities in order to obtain permission for a new restaurant in Chicago. That is incorrect. Chick-fil-A made no such concessions, and we remain true to who we are and who we have been.”
Sorry but the language is too ambiguous. From what I understand it was not Chik fil A that donated the money to pro marriage organizations but through the Cathay “WinShape” foundation. I would like to hear clear language that they will still be donating to these organizations (the ones previously donated to) and not that Chik fil A has not “changed practices or priorities.”
I would like to see a corporate link from Chik fil A or the WinShape foundation expressing whether they will continue to donate to pro marriage organizations.
Let your yeas be yeas and your nays be nays.
Until then neither myself nor my family will eat at Chik fil A.

Sep. 22, 2012 at 1:08amAgreed 100%. We stood up for Chick-Fil-A and came out in the masses to support them. Like them, we were also accused of being homophobic, intolerant, hateful and every other name in the book. But we didn’t care, because we stood for something TOGETHER. And now what do we get? A lame statement that skates around the question – DO THEY STILL DONATE???

That’s un-called for. Have you read his posts? Take of the rose colored glasses and realize you are being spun. Look for where they deny de-funding the specific groups that were named. You won’t find it. I like Dan Cathy and Chick-Fil-A but until they prove they did not stop funding the specific groups that were named. I’m not eating there.
Oh, and quit with the Salem Witch trial debate tactic. Because you disagree doesn’t mean they’re a witch.

Sep. 22, 2012 at 12:55amNobody tried to ruin the company brand name. All that was recommended by the gay rights folks was a boycott. The gays also got their elected officials to oppose putting more Chick-Fil-A stores in Boston Area and Chicago. The folks that supported the company’s position called for a buycott and supported them with cash through purchases. In the end here, I think we have conflicting reports and at this point, I don’t think Mr. Cathy knows which way to jump. Kind of reminds me of Romney on the campaign trail.

Sep. 22, 2012 at 1:24amYes, we are living in a world of deception. Did you read Chick-Fil-A’s statement carefully? Where did it say they are still donating to pro-marriage groups? It doesn’t. They MUST directly reaffirm their support for the charities they’ve been donating to. Otherwise, it’s a victory for the liberal media and special interest groups. (Please don’t be blinded by your disgust for the liberal media – Chick-Fil-A is not in the clear just yet.)

Sep. 22, 2012 at 1:07am@ CATB The 1st Amendment to the Constitution says “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech,…” I don’t see how Mr. Cathy had any rights violated. He is free to say whatever he likes. Nobody is trying to arrest him and throw him into prison. However, if his actions or words are offensive to a particular group, said group has the right to bring it to the attention of others. If a boycott is the most effective way to do so, that’s just the way it goes. In this case, Mr. Cathy’s supporters quite properly organized a buycott to demonstrate their support.
You Neo-con crackers are always screaming about having your 1st Amendments violated when you get a lot of grief for the remarkably stupid things you say. The 1st amendment doesn’t say anything about protecting you from stupid! As an example, think of Laura Ingraham repeating “the N word” over and over on the radio and losing her job. That moron from the north, Sarah Palin made comments about 1st Amendment rights being violated in this case when the 1st Amendment had nothing to do with this controversy…just an uneducated fool.

Sep. 22, 2012 at 2:11amVery true words on freedom of speech. You can say what you want and the government does not punish you for it, but there still might be other consequences for your words and expressions. However, if a company wants to open a store in a certain area but a politician in power won’t let them because of something they said, does this not punish them for something they said?

Sep. 22, 2012 at 1:30amYou probably saw Huckabee on Fox, as did I. Did he directly reaffirm that Chick-Fil-A will still be donating to pro-marriage charities? No, he didn’t. I’ve seen this before when eHarmony caved, and it’s happening all over again. Chick-Fil-A needs to be direct and tell the truth and answer the question directly – ARE YOU STILL DONATING TO THE SAME CHARITIES OR DID YOU CAVE?

Sep. 22, 2012 at 1:32amDan Cathy is an amazing CEO and I admire him greatly. But this statement from Chick-Fil-A is too ambiguous and seems to serve two masters. Nowhere did they ever reaffirm their support for the charities they’ve been donating to. Until they make a more direct statement, I have to unfortunately believe they did cave under pressure.

Sep. 21, 2012 at 10:59pmThis is not a new tactic. The immoral lies constantly, and will use any tactic to try and get their way. This world hates the value of God, Laws of God, Commandments of God and warnings from God, even to the point of taking Gods Word out of content and context, and claim to be Christian and God created homosexuality. Apostate clergy and apostate churches are many, and they make their fraud known when words and actions don’t match up. The Cathy families values and words do match up.
Stay strong Cathy family. God Bless.

Sep. 22, 2012 at 1:44amWell said, and may God continue to Bless Dan Cathy and his family. I’m just hoping for Chick-Fil-A to tell the whole truth here – they still didn’t answer to the claim they stopped donating. In fact, their statement was so vague and generalized, it almost seems they did in fact cave on that front much like the liberal media suggests.
