S.E. Cupp Clashes With Co-Hosts on ‘The Cycle’ After They Mock Romney’s Release of Tax Returns: ‘Shameful’

S.E. Cupp Clashes With Co Hosts on The Cycle Over Romneys Tax Returns

After calling on GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney to release more of his tax returns, the left got their wish on Friday when he did exactly that, publishing his complete tax filings from 2011. However, instead of giving Romney credit for paying all his taxes (14.1 percent) and giving 30 percent of his $13.7 million income ($4 million) to charity, the hosts of MSNBC’s “The Cycle,” with the exception of TheBlazeTV’s S.E. Cupp, remained unimpressed.

Co-host Steve Kornacki, a political writer at Salon, argued, somewhat jokingly, that Romney disqualified himself from being president based on his “own criteria” because he paid more in taxes than he needed to. Cupp later clarified that Romney merely waived some of his tax deductions on his charitable donations, bringing his effective tax rate to 14.1 percent.

Romney previously said he always pays exactly what he owes in taxes, adding that paying more taxes than he is required to would disqualify him from becoming president.

“I’m sorry, it’s just comical if nothing else,” Kornacki added, most of his co-hosts laughing. However, Cupp was clearly not amused and sat in her chair stone-faced until he finished his rant.

“I think you’re better than this,” she told Kornacki. “This is a man who was lambasted as a cheat and a liar, someone who was dishonest for months. Harry Reid said he paid no taxes. That’s shameful. He owes him an apology.

“Not yet. Not yet,” co-host Toure interjected, seemingly calling for Romney to release even more tax returns.

Kornacki went on to say that Romney has only released two years of tax returns, which does not satisfy Democrats’ desire to see a decade worth of his returns.

The story you want is not that he actually paid 14.1 percent in 2011 or that he gave away 44 percent of his income to charity and taxes in 2011. The story you want to make is that one day he said, ‘I’d be disqualified if I voluntarily paid more,’” Cupp said.

Watch Cupp hold her own in the clip below via MSNBC:

Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

Toure said Romney would have paid just around 9 percent in taxes if he didn’t “artificially inseminate” his tax rate.

This is when Cupp explained that Romney didn’t voluntarily pay more taxes, he merely waived his tax break on some of his charitable donations.

“So, when he doesn’t release it he’s a liar and he’s got something to hide, and when he does he’s out of ideas,” Cupp added, visibly annoyed. She went on to say the real story is that Romney is “generous,” a story her co-hosts were trying to bury.

Toure then attempted to cheapen the significance of Romney’s charitable giving and what it says about his character. Just for the record, the amount of money Romney gave to charity in 2011 doubles what President Barack Obama donated.

The rich man giving a bunch means less than the poor person giving a penny,” Toure said, actually referencing the Bible.

“That’s really cheap,” Cupp replied.

This is garbage. Arguing over his taxes. How about arguing over health care- why is it, when a CD player is first introduced in the ’80s it cost $1000, in ’80s dollars, and now, what $40 bucks? Then certainly an MRI screening should go down as well, right? Wrong.
Why is it the antidote to scorpion venom costs $40,000 per vial in the US but just $100 in Mexico? What the hell is going on here. I’m sick of this phony garbage. These f’ing elites.

This is all just a distraction.

Romney doesn’t know about it either. I haven’t heard him say anything.

The “hosts”, media, both sides of the media, need to start talking about this. Repubs /Democrats leaders either don’t care or don’t get it. That’s why I side it’s all a distraction, from both political parties.

As neither candidate wants to talk about it – neither of the biased media outlets will bring it up. There are candidates outside of the two party system who are talking about it – but as they say around here, “we are stuck with what we got”

Yea, let’s talk about health care. I’m fighting cancer, have been for 2 years. I saw my premium go up 17% the day after the supreme court affirmed obamacare. I had my insurance company over rule my doctor on one of my treatments, opting for a cheaper one. And he’s MAD about that. he told me he got into medicine to cure people, and government is getting in the way. But, you can keep your doctors (or family has lost two) and your premiums won’t go up. Yea, right.

For one thing Mexican wages are very much lower than American wages.

For another the Federal Register of American Laws is likely much longer than the Mexican code of laws.

Also big organizatons tend to be inefficient. Making it bigger is not going to help.

In the 1990s IBM Lou Gerstner broke IBM into 11 units so that they would think & behave like smaller business. Each unit had to make a profit. If Lou hadn’t done this terminal bureaucratic atherosclerosis would have set in & IBM would have died.

“Gerstner is credited with saving IBM from going out of business in the early 1990s …
In his memoir, Who Says Elephants Can’t Dance?, he describes his arrival at the company in April 1993, when an active plan was in place to dis-aggregate the company.”

I have an admission to make. I’ve slammed “The Five” on FOX for pitting four conservatives against one buffoonish liberal, and I’ll continue to do that. I understand how that grabs ratings from the faithful, even though it’s hardly an intelligent debate of the issues.

I don’t have cable and almost never watch TV (that’s not pretension, just an admission that I get news and entertainment from the internet) but I take it this video is some program on MSNBC. And I see it’s the same concept: a bunch of people on the left side of the political spectrum shouting down and talking over one person from the other side. I’m as revolted by that “reality TV” as I am as the FOX show. It’s pathetic that rational discussion of important issues has been replaced by this kind of ratings grabbing BS.

Fortunately people like us are smart enough to see through the BS.

The true reason that health care costs continue to rise in this country is very simple. Take it from someone who works in the healthcare industry. Ever since Medicare came along the cost of services has continued to rise. Why? Because there is absolutely No incentive for a government run program to save money or drive down costs. Let’s list a few examples: Housing market crash: Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. The cost of education: Sally Mae. Now let’s look at government run agencies that may not cost the public more but lose money every year and therefore do cost the taxpayer more. The Postal Service, Amtrak, The Parks and Recreation service. I completely agree with you that the cost of healthcare is too high. It is not because of a lack of ingenuity. Government overregulation of providers and a government run health system called Medicare that continues to drive up fee schedules are the two main reasons.

DOCTORS AND HOSPITALS CHARGE TOO FREAKING MUCH MONEY! PRICES HAVE GOT TO COME DOWN.

I think that Ryan’s voucher plan is a good one because with each person having only X amount of dollars to spend on a particular procedure, the prices of health care WOULD HAVE to come down. People think that market pressures wouldn’t work on doctors and hospitals.

I assure you that they WOULD. Sonograms are not different from widgets. The price will be affected by what the market will bear.

Barry said that he would cut the “unpatriotic” federal debt in half if he were elected in 2008.
It was at around 9 trillion then. Instead of cutting it, he added seven more trillion.
      It’s at 16+ trillion now.
      O.K. You leftwing idiots.
From George Washington to George Bush the federal debt never went higher than about 9 trillion. Obama promised to cut that in half. Instead he took it from 9 trillion to 16 trillion in 3 years. So. From 1781 until 2008 it never went higher than 9 trillion. From 2009 until 2003 Obama has jacked it up to 16 trillion.
      How much is a trillion?
One million seconds = 12 days.
One trillion seconds = 31,688 YEARS.

There’s lots more scorpions in Mexico than the US, I thought you knew! GE now makes all of the CT/MRI scanners in China so in 2012 our health institutions have to pay all of the hidden import fees which GE adds to the cost of the machines. Besides, the cost of maintenance on these monsters, because they’re made in China, is now 20 times higher than in 1980. Back in 1980 the Radiation Medicine guys/gals made $10.00/hr; a good wage at the time. Now a good rad tech commands $80K per year. Now the real reason to your question. Doctors in 2012 order 400-500% more CT and MRI’s than in 1980; why you ask………because Medicare will pay, insurance companies will pay and our generous politicians and courts refuse to limit damages from bogus law suits. The hospitals go along with the game by charging horrendious fees for these tests so that the Medicade and uninsured types can get their tests also. The doctors are doing everything they can to keep from getting sued. Lots more needless testing and lots more work for our hospitals. I hope your questions were rhetorical because with a high school education and a little common sense you could have answered your own querys. Scorpion venom is much more easily harvested from Mexican scorpions. When they drink tequila they give it without being squeezed….really!

Since Glenn left Fox, I see no equivalent TV programming at all ! And, I never view CNN, MSNBC, ABC, CBS or any other sedious visual rag. Why when you can accurately predict their substance ? But, I am curious as to why Cupp, who I thought was associated with Glenn, is associated with them.

Are you trying to bring some degree of non-lying rationality to MSNBC ? Is this somewhat like “Casting pearls to the swing?”

John Stossel claims that different hospitals charge different prices for the same procedure, like an MRI scan…And there needs to be a way the patient/customer can shop for the cheapest hospital….The medical field and pharmecutical companies have so much red tape that keeps them from functioning like a regular business to reduce costs and make necessary ajustments for the benefit of their customers…

I’m convinced that Insurance cost you the customer more in the long run, rather than having your own “insurance”, saving up your own money….If you don’t need it, you don’t spend it!

If we allow this to go on as a nation we deserve the crap we are headed for. We don’t talk about our future being played out presently in Greece and the rest of Europe who implemented the same type of failed liberal spending policies Obama has implemented. These group of jackals decide instead to chew on the difference between paying 9% and 14% on taxes and have the gall to act appalled that a multimillionaire decides to give 44% of his income to charity instead of the government.

I think the left is so funny it hurts.

Obama’s plan to get the unemployment rate down is to discourage people from looking, his plan to show improvements in the economy is too make it so bad that anything looks better. The reason Romney’s rate is so low is that he gets most of his income from capital gains, and he gives away much of his income which makes it look like his rate is low. If he gave away everything to charity, the left would criticize him for owing no taxes.

By the way, both Biden and Obama, the big advocates of being our brothers keepers, had an abysmal record of charity until they figured out someone was looking.

I don’t think what the liberals are doing is funny at all. To me it is scary! Once we begin giving 51% of the people food stamps, and once we tell 51% of the people that they are too poor to pay taxes, and once we give free health care to 51%+ of the people, and once we extend our unemployment benefits and social programs to the magic 51%, we will be on an irreversible road to true socialism. People do not want to give up what is free because they will not work hard to become successful, since all they do is take from those who slave over their jobs 40+ hours a week. That is why politicians promise everything to the people during their campaigns, but only give a portion once elected. The problem is, that if we give one percent of what they want each year, in 51 years, they are making more than those working – - so why work?? This will be America’s downfall.

I guarantee you Romney pays a higher INCOME TAX RATE than you. But most of his “income” is capital gains, which is currently at 15%. For those of you who don’t understand capital gains…You make income and it is taxed, what you have left over after Uncle Sam bends you over, is then invested and what do you know makes some money. THAT IS CAPITAL GAINS! No different than anything you invest in, even if it is just your savings accounts and CDs. If you ask me it is double taxation.

SECOND … No one is claiming that Romney broke any laws!!!
THIRD … He not only took all the “loopholes” available to him (Not a crime now you see) but he even DIDN’T take some of them that were available to him … costing him some real cash (that dirty crook) …
FOURTH … Bet you all MY tax refund ($0 last year) … that you took all the available deductions for yourself (you dirty crook).
FIFTH … So WTF is the beef??? Barry didn’t do ANYTHING to reform the tax code … even when he had both houses in his pocket!
SIXTH … Does the name Tony Rezco mean anything to you?
SEVENTH … NOW we know who the real tax cheat is!!!!

ALL PROGRESSIVES ARE FREAKING AIRHEADS … NOTHING BUT DEAD SPACE BETWEEN THEIR EARS.

Romney GAVE TO CHARITY over twice as much as his LEGAL tax bill … Does the name Joe Biden mean anything to you when it comes to charitable contributions … it should!!!

Romney did say that he has never paid less than 13% in taxes. Also, Romney said he shouldn’t be president if he pays more than he should in taxes…..So faced with a tax dilemma in which Romney would pay less than 13% if he deducted his charities – he decided to deduct only some of it in order to meet his own criteria. This should be obvious proof that Romney paid less than 13% in previous years – when he was not running for president.

It wouldn’t be a big deal if Romney didn’t make two separate and contradictory ‘apologies’ for his wealth. Romney frets over every single thing – this is why he is a flip flopper. Instead of just honestly discussing the problems with the socialist mindset, Romney chooses to conform to it.

You’re serious? You think he can’t be president over a percentage number disagreement of the taxes he paid, when all the way till now we were told by people like YOU that he never paid them at all?
Would you rather Obama, who has brought us record deficits, record unemployment, record bank failures, record foreclosures, record number of Americans on food stamps, record spending, foreign policy disasters, US credit downgraded, record US troop death toll in Afghanistan, record number of golf games, Gunwalker, Solyndra, OH – ALMOST FORGOT just how many Obama staff we found out were in serious ARREARS on their taxes. Shall I continue?

I see you have the comprehension of a 4 year old as well. I know tax rates for a lot of things and capital gains was probably the first one I learned. What gave you and the other knothead the impression I didn’t know he pays capital gains. I just don’t think their rate should be lower than others. Income is income. Some people shovel crap. Give them the tax break.

Seriously?Obama is about as straight as a pretzel. He needs a TelePrompTer and an army of writers to keep all his lies together. And you actually believe comparing a compulsive liar to a competent, albeit a liberal Republican is a winning argument? If I want an Ivy League bumbling coke head actor to read a script and play the president in a youtube video,I would hire Obama or Clooney. If I want to stop the fiscal insanity and begin the crawl back from the Democrat spending policies that is killing a nation, I would vote for the guy who I can trust to run a lemonade stand.

Perhaps you would like waking up living in North Korea,Cuba,Mexico,Iran,Zimbabwe, Kenya,China,Russia,Greece—the rest of us don’t. Come November, we will rise up,raise the flag and fight.

So let me get this right; income is income? his tax rates are lower than yours=unfair? He paid 13% when he only really owed 9%=dishonest? and this somehow makes him unqualified to serve as President, right?
OK so somebody who”shovels crap” doesn’t qualify for a lower rates right? I assume that your reference to”shoveling crap” is a demeaning slur directed towards the working poor. Shame on you. The working poor have a tax benefit. You know; Earned income credit, oh don’t forget “childcare tax credit”. The crap shovelers as you call them have an effective tax rate approaching zero. Since income is income they should lose these tax benefits? Is this unfair because you pay 28.6%? If you indeed payed 28.6% you are in the elite range on income earners. He paid 13% when he could have paid 9%. I think this is honorable, not dishonest, and shows that his charitable giving was done out of a sense of community and charity since he did not claim the “benefit “of the deduction. How many deductions did you forego to benefit the Treasury?
I would much prefer a President with a sense of community and charity than I would a selfish, narcicisstic,”take my money and give it to everybody else”,jug-eared progressive like the one we have in office now. Your comments seem to reflect a certain animosity directed at anyone who is currently doing better than you or who has a tax benefit that you don’t. That my friend is Envy. Sad really. once again we must address your comprehension skills. First of all, the 9 % bolsters my argument. That means romney pays almost 20% lower than me and a good portion of other small business owners. As for the 47%ers, you do know what payroll tax is right? well as it turns out when you include that tax the guy shoveling crap pays a higher percentage than romney as well. thats why I say he should get the break before anyone like romney including myself. Never said it disqualifies him for President so feel free to continue making things up.It seems to suit you. In my opinion it is his off shore bank accounts that disqualify him not his tax rate. Just to be clear. I don’t care if he does that either. I have many of friends that do it but they are not running for president. I don’t agree with it and I don’t do it. I also never demonized anyone. If romney showed a consistent pattern of that type of giving I would applaude him too. Unfortunately he does’nt. In fact, when compared to 2010 it looks like he is artificially inflating his tax burden to get to a reasonable rate. Finally I don’t have a envious bone in my body. I have anything I want and are completely satisfied. However, I’m interested in paying down the debt. Something people like romney, while definetly having the means to, is chosing not to, and just wants more tax breaks till he is at a less than 1% tax rate. while your throwing around words like envy you may want to look up greed and see what that has to say

Democrats like Charlie Rangel, Time Geitner (who’s in charge of the IRS) John Kerry, John Edwards don’t pay the taxes they’re supposed to but that doesn’t bother Soybomb and others because they’re Democrats. They can perjure themselves like Clinton, and say things like i didn’t have sexual relations with that woman (and they’re still heroes and now are telling the truth?) but all that doesn’t matter because they’re Democrats. They’re Democrats by Religion and won’t convert with logic or common sense. Waste of time.
