CNN Admits Finding Slain Ambassador’s Personal Journal in Libya…And Using it for ‘Tips’

On Friday night, Anderson Cooper revealed on his show that CNN used Ambassador Christopher Stevens’ personal journal as a source in its reporting after the deadly attack that killed Stevens and three other Americans in Benghazi, Libya.

Discussing when, specifically, the information was used, Cooper said:

On Wednesday of this week, we reported that a source familiar with Ambassador Stevens’ thinking said in the months before his death, Ambassador Stevens talked about being worried about what he called the never-ending security threats in Benghazi.

We also reported that the ambassador specifically mentioned the rise in Islamic extremism, the growing Al Qaeda presence in Libya and said he was on an Al Qaeda hit list.  The information for that report, like all of CNN’s reporting, was carefully vetted.  Some of that information was found in a personal journal of Ambassador Stevens in his handwriting.

We came upon the journal through our reporting and notified the family. At their request, we returned that journal to them. We reported what we found newsworthy in the ambassador’s writings… [Emphasis added]

Here is video of Cooper’s admission, via Mediaite:

Though Cooper appears to relay the information as nothing more than a side note, the Wall Street Journal is reporting that there is much more to the story.

Not only did CNN fail to mention for days the fact that it apparently used the personal journal of a murdered ambassador as a source, Stevens’ family reportedly asked CNN not to discuss the journal or its contents until they had a chance to review it.

Furthermore, Philippe Reines, a senior adviser to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, disputes CNN’s assertion that the network contacted the family within hours of finding the journal and readily agreed to return it.  Apparently it took several attempts to get CNN to agree to hand over the private information.

State Department spokesman Philippe Reines called CNN’s actions “indefensible.”

Early Saturday morning, CNN published a story with more information on the journal, and how exactly it came into the network’s possession.

The network explains:

Four days after he was killed, CNN found a journal belonging to late U.S. Ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens. The journal was found on the floor of the largely unsecured consulate compound where he was fatally wounded.

CNN notified Stevens’ family about the journal within hours after it was discovered and at the family’s request provided it to them via a third party.

The journal consists of just seven pages of handwriting in a hard-bound book.

For CNN, the ambassador’s writings served as tips about the situation in Libya, and in Benghazi in particular.  CNN took the newsworthy tips and corroborated them with other sources.

CNN held onto the journal just long enough to photocopy the entire thing. At that point they returned the original to the family and claimed innocence.

Progressivism is not about superiority, it is about equality. Our favorite lines from the pledge of allegence are “One Nation Under God With Liberty and Justice For All”. CNN made a horrific mistake, whoever was responsible should resign at once. Candy Crowley should also step down from being a moderator, George Stephanopolis can be her replacement as a moderator.

I wonder what CNN tore out of the journal that wasn’t favorable to the Obama minionstration. Of course they copied it, but what else did these treasonous liars do?They knowingly and freely chose to corrupt and steal evidence from a crime scene. A terror attack took place and CNN didn’t think twice about doing this? The media isn’t untouchable legally.People need to be arrested at CNN and charged with interfering with a terror attack and federal investigation. CNN should go off the air and have their FCC licensing pulled for airing their own admission of corrupting a crime scene and investigation. If there was any justice left in this society,CNN should be DONE.

Aside from withholding the journal from the famliy, they also withheld it from the government. Non-the-less, they are to be commended. If the Obama people had gotten to it first we would still be getting the line about the video being the underlying cause of his death, without reference to the alqaeda fatwa calling for his assasination.

Could care less about CNN, the position they took with the journal
& the position they put themselves in.
it is their cross to bear-
who knows what the other “elite” media would have done ?
      It’s a ratings war, it’s a revenue war….NO stone left unturned.

Nothing about these nitwit networks surprise us, anymore.

That said, what’s done is done,
      we know for sure,
by proof of the good Ambassador’s own writing
that he feared for his safety & those protecting him.

      This is the EXACT antithesis
of what Hillary & Oblameo wanted us to believe.
That sorrowful, hang-dog look they displayed,
at the White House denouncing the crime
      was not for those fallen
but out of guilt & coverup for their OWN failure-
to secure the Ambassador & his staff.

      Heads should ROLL on this-
      yes, Hillary’s leaving the post,
none of the career State Dept, employees,
in DC or foreign posts can stand her-
she still needs to be held accountable.

The other head that must ROLL is Obama’s-
the buck stops at the top,
he & Hillary are complicit & complacent in this attack
& shrugging blame off on the video.
      UNBELIEVABLE !

      Ever since, George Bush left,
no one dare utter the word, “Terrorism”
      whether home or abroad.
Obama said, “America can absorb another terrorist attack”
& yet, he’s characterized every attack to some other fault…word games !

I’m glad the journal & CNN exposed the Ambassador’s truth
      which in turn
CONFIRMED Hillary & Obama’s blatant lies

      @ProgressivePete

Liberty and Justice under God is available for all who make the right choices. He sets before us life or death, blessings or curses. God admonishes us to choose life that we might live. Oddly enough there are many who are choosing death out of indifference and even defiance towards God.
Because of this, there is NO equality of outcome.
So if “progressivism is about equality”, it is not going to happen.
Even a solvent government is not going to buy you out of the spiritual law of sin and death in this world.
Progressivism is just another false god in this world that will multiply your sorrows.

FBI was still not in the compound late last week. You can bet that the SEAL’s and other operatives in the area, that have been there since before the fall of the country, removed what ever was of import and gave it to our government officials. The same people running our government own the media. Very easy for these things to fall into the hands of a media owned by global promoters.

CNN retrieved the ambassador’s journal and quickly opened it and printed it up for everyone at CNN to view. They then pretended to be concerned about getting it to the family of the ambassador and asked them if they could publish its contents. The family said NO. CNN has decided to do what they want with the contents. This is outrageous! CNN should be punished for this direct invasion of privacy and be sued by the family of the ambassador. You have to wonder what else the CNN “reporters” found at the scene and when they are going to reveal that. Does anyone else think it strange that the ambassador just happened to be wandering around with his personal diary with him? How secure is the crime scene that reporters just wander in and pick through things and take what they want? Who else wandered into the scene and took things–could Wikileaks have been on the scene, the non-aggressive(according to the Whitewash House and the Dept of Distaste) Muslim Brotherhood? And now the “intelligentsia” in the Whitewash House are going to send 1/3 of the Gitmo detainees back to their country of origin? Did they learn nothing from the Benghazi attack or the various demonstrations around the Muslim world? They weren’t chanting “Gitmo! Gitmo!” It is important to note that the Dept of Injustice in the statement regarding the Blind Sheik said that he would not be released, but they were studying his possible “transfer” to Egypt due to his age and health—hmm, where have we heard that before??!!

You don’t seem to realize the Obama administration has been editing and controlling our news, and dictating what can or cannot be reported. For CNN to report this to the public gives one huge smack to the Obama administration and the lies Obama has been feeding the public. Obama and Clinton have been covering up the facts, including the fact our Marines were disarmed — their ammo was taken away. Our Embassy personnel AND the Ambassadors have reported repeatedly of the growing threats and Obama did absolutely nothing to ensure their safety. Reporters have been fired for refusing to edit their copy per Obama’s demands, and all copy has to be sent to Obama before it’s given to the public. It appears Huma is also doing some editing. It’s pretty cheesy editing. So, before you people demand the FBI to “investigate” the media, learn first what is really going on.

Is this not another example of how not to exhaust the public? Further, is this not an example of media shenanigans, skirting the issue of truth? Who knows what to believe? Daily, we learn what we believe are facts only to learn that facts are often baloney. For example, what was initially called a “spontaneous” attack in Libya seems to no longer be considered a “spontaneous” attack in Libya. Is it not clear partisan, politics includes framing the debate? Sadly, the finger-prints are often found within both parties. However, at this time, it maybe the lack of transparency coming from the White House.

CIA? They probably knew the into and heard the chatter, but Barry was probably too busy meeting with Beyonce or Letterman. I mean, if he wouldn’t meet with Israel’s Netanyahu, why would he pay attention to any possible reports or terror threats from Libya???Everyone faulted Bush for not paying attention to intel in August of 2001, but at least he acted like a President when the event occurred. If Obama failed to pay attention to any reports from CIA or any governmental agency, then he’s done far worse than Bush did. With all we’ve seen with regard to terror, you’d think our embassies would have been prepared with more security on the 9-11 anniversary, just as Bush did throughout his Presidency. This attack and killing of an American ambassador in Libya belongs to Barack Hussein Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton. If the CIA failed, then top CIA brass had better prepare themselves to be marched into Senate hearings and take the fall for their worthless boss, Obama.

CNN began with an honorable mission but because Ted Turner and “Hanoi” Jane Fonda Turner now believe that the Progressive movement takes precedence they have turned the CNN brand into a slur of its former greatness.
Many people now consider the initials as:

It is so sad the personal bias has now been allowed to ruin a noble missions intent.

Will they be charged with tampering with evidence from a crime scene ? After all, the FBI is supposed to be investigating the building as a crime scene, not a terrorist attack. That’s how the liberla media classifies a terrorist attack, CNN included. I guess if push comes to shove, CNN will be forced to declare the incident a “terrorist” attack.

      Let’s all play-

      nobody does it better,
i.e. Vince Foster, Whitewater, Lewinsky, Solyndra, on & on & on.

Yes, CNN has some “splainin” to do
      but watch
as Oblameo & Hillary put ALL the focus on the CNN ordeal
      just like that video
and NOT on their own SCREW UP.

Do you really think, if Hillary & Oblameo got their hands on the journal,
they would’ve let the world know of the Ambassador’s dire concern ?

They would’ve, most likely destroyed the contents
& NEVER notified the good Ambassador’s family
      of its existence
to protect THEIR own political butts.

THAT is the REAL story…no evidence, NO conscious, NO accountability.

The rest of the Bleedia-Schmedia will roll with the CNN factor
& completely negate the REAL issue-
this administration’s FAILURE to heed an Ambassador’s plea
for fortified security in a dire, hardship post.

Don’t let the media & administration take your eye off THAT “shell”.

Whatever happens with CNN….who cares, who watches them anyways ?
They’ve embroiled themselves in a mess
but, in a precarious, unorthodox way-
they have managed to EXPOSE the truth
      with the Ambassador’s own words
which fly in the face of Hillary & Oblameo.

Pick your poison, America…thieves or liars ?

The “LIARS” got good people killed,
the thieves got their hands on a journal which proved THAT very point.

Anyone who sell’s wepeons to our enemy’s should get killed and he was gay and he was put there by our communist leader to sell arms to our enemy. A gay communist working for a communist. Nothing american about it. You don’t like the truth that’s your problem. TREASON is TREASON……

      @Yeastinfection

“Do ALL American citizens who are gay communists deserve to be murdered, raped, and sodomized- pre and posthumously- by angry mobs of Islamic radicals?”

Well, it is easier than us having to do it….

      @U.N.

I know the dude was gay, and considering his employer, its not a big leap to believe he was a Marxist of some sort. We disagree on whether or not these transgressions deserve death but, you have piqued my curiosity with this accusation of him being an “Arms Dealer” to U.S. enemies.

Please provide some reference if you would be so kind. I have found nothing indicating this was the case.

@EAST: Do you watch Glenn’s show? Just last week he said the very same thing that he thinks he was a arms dealer for the CIA. They even posted a 13 min. segment here on the blaze. Selling arms to the enemy is a death sentance. I could careless if he was gay but that’s the reason they killed him. Do some research i’m not the only one who says this. My opinion anyone who sell’s arms to our enemy deserves death plain and simple. And everyone comes out of the woodwork to attack me for saying the same thing. Glenn is to nice to say if he got what he deserved i’m not. Arm the enemy and you are the enemy.

Queerty & some other sites were talking about. I just found out today. Yes, we have edited news.

Maybe someone is setting up a war or is clueless. What next? Do we send gay ambassadors to Pakistan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Turkey & hope for the best like lil babes in the woods?

Susan Rice is a POS, blaming this on the video. The video didn’t help but the hit on the ambassador was long planned.

This wouldn’t be the first time a gay man has turned up dead in association with Obama. Kind of gives you pause for think, doesn’t it.

@ UN… I don’t watch Glenn’s show.. sorry to say. Not in the budget right now.
missed any reference to Stevens being arms dealer on Blaze also.
Google not a help.. if you have a link, i’d love to see it.

@ Walk… Gay ambassadors is a poor tactical decision in the Mid-east on our part for sure.
      …and yes, Susan Rice is a moron… or more likely a pawn……

My prediction: If Romney wins- Obama gets us into a major conflict during the lame duck… Dems spend next 4yrs blaming Romney for getting us into another war…. If Obama wins- same scenario but sold to us as “leading from behind” as our troops are at the front… either way it’s the means to a political end Eisenhower warned about. …. it’s a desperate and proven temporary fix to a bad economy.

@UN … i believe you saw it and thanks for looking. It will pop up again in some other story for sure.

PS: ease up on the caffeine… saying American citizens, who are most likely trying to do their jobs, deserve horrible deaths is a sure fire way to invite name- calling.

@UN: If I remember correctly, Stevens was put in Libya after the uprising. Beck stated that “he” believed Stevens was CIA rather than just an Ambassador, as were the two Marines. But Beck had no proof, only what he was thinking. And stated that Stevens was sent there to retrieve the arms the Obama Administration “loaned” to Al Quaeda to overthrow Gaddafi. This is the first I’ve heard of him being gay. Either way, Obama has blood on his hands.

This is nothing compared to what Obama did leading up to the slaying by not providing the Ambassador with proper security and what he did afterward by blaming it on a movie trailer.

Worst and most corrupt president in history…. by a long shot.

And, Stiggs, how did CNN get access to the site where the journal was found, was there still no security even after the murders? You would think the Obama administration would get a clue and move quickly to secure the building before CNN had access. Pretty sad when network people are quicker on their feet that the US government. Given that Clinton signed off on a contract with a British firm to handle security (not an American firm), that agreed to being UNARMED. Makes you truly wonder which side of the fence our present government is on.

No security at all. They have sent the FBI to investigate, but those agents can’t get there — no security!

Send in the USMC to clean their clocks, secure the scene, and turn out the lights on the way back out to the ships.

If that were in the US they would be guilty of obstruction of justice and tampering with evidence at a crime scene…wait that is on U.S. soil.
