‘Dehumanizes and Marginalizes’: Illegal Immigrant Journalist on Quest to Ban ‘Illegal Immigrant’ From Associated Press, New York Times

The former Washington Post journalist who made headlines last year after outing himself as an illegal immigrant is on a mission to get media organizations to stop using the term “illegal immigrant,” starting with the Associated Press and New York Times.

Jose Antonio Vargas told reporters at an online news association conference on Friday that journalists should instead use “undocumented” or explore other ways to describe someone’s immigration status.

“Right now, my two main targets, and I say that politely, are going to be the New York Times and the Associated Press,” Vargas said, according to ABC News. “The term dehumanizes and marginalizes the people it seeks to describe. Think of it this way, in what other context do we call someone illegal?”

Vargas said he plans to meet with representatives from the Associated Press in charge of the organization’s influential stylebook, and said he has already begun having conversations with New York Times ombudsman Margaret Sullivan, whom he described as “very open,” according to Politico.

Illegal Immigrant Journalist Jose Antono Vargas on Quest to Ban Illegal Immigrant From Associated Press, New York Times In a Time magazine column on the same topic published Friday, Vargas said journalists who use “illegal” are “politicizing an already political issue.” He noted that several news organizations, including the Miami Herald, Huffington Post and San Antonio News-Express have changed their policies in recent years to drop the term “illegal immigrant” in favor of “undocumented immigrant.”

Vargas, who won a Pulitzer Prize for breaking news coverage in 2008, appeared on the cover of Time in June with 35 others under the headline “We are Americans*…*Just not legally.”

Paul Colford, AP’s director of media relations, told Politico in a statement that “illegal immigrant” was the organization’s preferred term until last year.

“Though the term is in the AP Stylebook because it reflects a legal reality, we believe there are alternatives. AP reporters understand that it’s not the only way to refer to individuals in a host of different circumstances,” Colford said. “In the case of a person brought here as a child without permission, the term can be misleading, since the person wasn’t a willing ‘immigrant’ at all. In such a case, AP reporters might simply state the situation: He doesn’t have legal permission to live in the United States, since his parents entered the country illegally (or without authorization).”

In addition to the AP and the Times, Vargas said his Define American organization will also encourage people around the country to report instances of print, radio and television news outlets using “illegal immigrant.”

“The people who read and consume the news in their own local communities should be calling out these news agencies,” Vargas told ABC. “It needs to be at that level.”

  Invaders is a favorite…because it’s very true. Easiest way to conquer a country is by booming population growth and cross-pollination = breeding. Central America has us (legal American citizens of all ethnicities) beat.
  
  Drug trafficers/dealers/gang/cartel people are my biggest peave. I don’t believe in “due process” for these animals. Their relatives harbor them, they do their “business”, and traverse the open border.

There are people in the USA currently who are 1000 times more “alien” than this individual but they have full American citizenship, people like Huma Abedin, the sons of the islamist Mohammed Morsi, crimianl Nidal Hassan, etc.

  Exactly!!! When you enter a country, you do so two ways: (1) legally, with appropriate papers, passport, etc.; or (2) ILLEGALLY. They can spin it however they want, ILLEGAL will ALWAYS BE ILLEGAL. My mother was a LEGAL IMMIGRANT/Naturalized American Citizen, my father a Natural Born American Citizen, I take extreme offense to these individuals who ‘claim’ to be American simply by right of birth. Their parents, who most likely could not have met the standards to gain legal entry, came through the ‘back door’, unlike the LEGAL IMMIGRANTS who applied, waited their turn, PAID THEIR FEES, LEARNED THE LANGUAGE and in many cases, ADOPTED A NEW LANGUAGE & NEW COUNTRY. I can’t imagine how difficult it must be for these ‘misfits’ who don’t fit into either country, but they have no one to blame but their own short-sighted, foolish parents who took the easy way out and now the children must pay for the sins of the fathers. Frankly, I’m done with the sympathy factor, DEPORT ALL ILLEGALS NOW!!!!

  My family was trying to escape Europe as the Soviets were coming in to take it over after WWII and they almost didn’t get out of the country because they had to wait for their Visa and permits to be allowed to board a boat to come to America, only a small handful made it, the vast majority didn’t and were all murdered by the communists – yes the same communists the DNC, SEIU and other idiots love so much…
  
  They had to be able to speak basic english and had to study civics on the way over, take a test at Ellis Island and swear an oath to pledge their allegiance to America and forgo their allegiance for their former nation.
  
  THAT is how you become a LEGAL U.S. citizen…
  
  these people purposefully and knowingly came into their country outside of legal and proper channels, they are ILLEGALS, no if’s and’s or but’s about it.

  Vargas, you have seen anything yet. As soon as the incompetent in the WH is voted out, you will see REAL immigration reform, and it won’t be allowing more lawn mowers in. It will be bringing in immigrants legally who contribute positively to our country in areas such as science and medicine.

If you are an immigrant (from somewhere outside of the U.S., and you are in the U.S. illegally, you ARE AN ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT!

If you are someone who was brought into the U.S. by illegal immigrant parents as when you were a child, it is not, necessarily, “your fault,” but you are still an illegal immigrant.

Do we need a process to deal with young people who know only the U.S. as home, yes! But, do we change our vocabulary to make you “feel” better? No!

Truth, is truth, is truth, and when we live within truth (coming to the U.S. illegally is NOT TRUTH, IT’S A LIE!), we should be able to work out a process (a type of fast track to citizenship) for those who show that they are loyal to the U.S. and are working, tax paying contributors to the American society and standards.

But in the end, illegal immigrant is a truth, whether or not it hurts your feelings.

If I am fat, and someone says I’m fat, I may not like what they say, but they are telling truth. Therefore, if I don’t like that truth about myself, I NEED TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT! And I’m sorry, but all situations short of some birth defects, can be changed! Hard work, determination, and truth. . .

  For 18 years I have taught children in Texas, most of whom are the offspring of illegal invaders. They may live here, get free healthcare here, get subsized housing here, get free school breakfasts and lunches and a free education here, and get free foodstamps here, but I have never known one who did not automatically and unconsciously refer to Mexico, El Salvador, Honduras or wherever they came from as “my country.” Forget the nonsense about the children being patriotic US Americans. Their families take them on extended vacations back to wherever they came from every summer so they can stay with abuela and forget most of the English we worked to teach them in school all year; they write and talk constantly about how fun it is over there, how they would not have to go to school there, how much better the food is over there, and so on. Anyone who claims they love the USA is misinformed or dreaming up some liberal romanticism. They look at us the way men look at a cheap sl*t who gives up everything way too easily…with utter contempt. And when they get older, they are so thoroughly brainwashed into the doctrine that they are being “cheated” by white people that they become downright hateful.
  Send them back, even the kids. They would actually be happier there. And I know we would be happier here.

Why is it OK for you to come here without permission from the people who pay the majority of taxes and use the services of hospitals-who cannot turn you away, and schools-who MUST educate your children? Is that fair Mr Vargas? Do not tell me how much you contribute-it doesn’t hold any truth to what you consume in services. Sorry, you are illegal aliens and I wish you would go back, including the children you snuck over the border to have in US hospitals. Your breaking the law is not Christian either. Christ said to obey the laws of the land-render unto Ceaser, etc. You are stealing services that equate to money earned by those here legaly, and that is against the ten commandments. I wanted to conceaal carry , I didn’t whine that I couldn’t carry because I didn’t have a license. I went through the process and got my license, I went through the process to get a legal drivers license, I went through the process to get my veteran license plates. What part of this is hard for you to understand? Now Shut Up take responsibilty for your process and stop whining.

Words mean things. Very simply, if you are NOT here legally, then you are here il-legally (prefix gets added to mean “not”, i.e. NOT legal, illegal.)
If you came from another country, then you are an immigrant.
Put the two words together, (and yes, I know that’s a real tough task for “some” people,)
and you have illegal (not legal) immigrant.
Stop flucking around with words, people, say what you mean, and mean what you say! Then, DO what you SAY you’re going to do.

Perhaps “Criminal” would be a better term. Just how is it that the truth should be controlled, if there was an issue of lies involved then he might have a point but the truth is they are here because a crime was committed and they need to resolve that by returning to their homeland and trying to follow the law. If they are such patriots why do they not correct the failings in their own home land and make that a better place to live, no they want to come here to the land of the free and change our ways. Some how I just have no sympathy with their position. I did not ask them here, the law is clear on how to come here and they need to make it right or repair the country they came from and have a better life there. if they can not attempt to do that what value do they have here. All I see is how they want to change our ways to meet their needs, not what I call the American way.

  Most of the time the water is kinda low in the Rio Grande; maybe ‘wet foot’ would be more appropriate. What we need to do is have a ‘pre amnisty list’; get on the list and be first in line.

  I grew up hearing the term ‘Wet Back’, it was used by Americans in the agriculture community I grew up in. It was considered insulting. I personally do not care to go to insulting people.
  
  The law is the law, they are here illegally.
  What this Vargas is doing is just another piece of what already exist in California. Gov. Brown giving illegals rights, denying US citizens their rights. California is being handed over to Mexico, that is where the battle is….not with this Vargas.

Can someone explain, in a rational manner, why it is ok to come to America illegally and be outraged when called illegal and asked to leave or be deported when if you are picked up for being illegal in their country you not only get called names but thrown in prison and it ok in that country?   We should be truthful call outsiders who break our laws and invade “illegal undocumented immigrants” or maybe even “illegal undocumented alien immigrants”.
  
  Or we can keep it simple “illegal aliens”… They are breaking laws and are not citizens of the United Stated. They do not have a right to vote, although many are voting illegally, or being allowed to vote illegally or through unconstitutional laws.
  
  Also we are not dehumanizing them, nor are we marginalizing them. To marginalized would be to forget about them, ignore them, and allow them to exist in the fringe. What we need to do is “focus” on them, “expose” them, and expel them back to their own countries.
