Egyptian President: U.S. Must Respect Arab History and Culture, Even if It Conflicts With Western Values

Egyptian President Morsi Outlines Future of U.S. Arab Relations in New York Times Article

Newly-elected Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi granted a 90-minute interview to the New York Times ahead of his first presidential visit to the United States this week, laying out the changing face of U.S.-Arab relations.

Egypt’s first democratically-elected president, Morsi has been affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood for decades. In fact, according to the New York Times, Morsi even spent time in jail during Mubarak’s reign for his affiliation with the then-suppressed group.

“I grew up with the Muslim Brotherhood,” Morsi reportedly explained proudly. “I learned my principles in the Muslim Brotherhood. I learned how to love my country with the Muslim Brotherhood. I learned politics with the Brotherhood. I was a leader of the Muslim Brotherhood.”

The New York Times has more on how Morsi says U.S.-Arab relations must change:

He said it was up to Washington to repair relations with the Arab world and to revitalize the alliance with Egypt, long a cornerstone of regional stability.

If Washington is asking Egypt to honor its treaty with Israel, he said, Washington should also live up to its own Camp David commitment to Palestinian self-rule. He said the United States must respect the Arab world’s history and culture, even when that conflicts with Western values.

“If you want to judge the performance of the Egyptian people by the standards of German or Chinese or American culture, then there is no room for judgment,” he said. “When the Egyptians decide something, probably it is not appropriate for the U.S. When the Americans decide something, this, of course, is not appropriate for Egypt.”

He suggested that Egypt would not be hostile to the West, but would not be as compliant as Mr. Mubarak either.

“Successive American administrations essentially purchased with American taxpayer money the dislike, if not the hatred, of the peoples of the region,” he said, by backing dictatorial governments over popular opposition and supporting Israel over the Palestinians. [Emphasis added]

When confronted about essentially removing any counterweight to his absolute authority by replacing the military leaders with men of his choosing, Morsi responded: “We are behaving according to the Egyptian people’s choice and will, nothing else — is it clear?”

Morsi also praised President Obama’s decision to act “decisively and quickly” in support of the so-called “Arab Spring” revolutions throughout the region, according to the New York Times. Apparently, Egyptians just want “the right…to enjoy the same freedoms that Americans have.”

One of the major topics of discussion seemed to be the Camp David Accords, and how Morsi believes the United States is not holding up its end of the bargain. Responsible for decades of peace between Egypt and Israel, Morsi claimed the treaty is “unfulfilled” because Palestinians have not yet achieved statehood.

“As long as peace and justice are not fulfilled for the Palestinians, then the treaty remains unfulfilled,” he stated, though he did not clarify what that means in terms of actual policy changes.

Morsi also discussed his time in California as a graduate student, reportedly saying “Go Trojans!” with a smile.

Apparently the Egyptian president praised American work ethic, punctuality, and time management. When the translator went so far as to relate that Morsi “learned a lot” in the States, however, the president was quick to clarify. Morsi interjected, saying he learned a lot “scientifically,” before lamenting loose Western morals and “naked restaurants” like Hooters.

  This has been about using threats and violence to force non-Muslims to submit to Sharia law regarding blasphemy. They specifically want to subjugate our First Amendment to Sharia. This is about dominance, not “hurt feelings.” We should be saying to them, in no uncertain terms, that if they want to submit to Sharia, that is their right, but they cannot expect others, and they certainly have no right to demand that others, submit to Sharia.

Answer is that it teaches materialistic values and not spiritual values like love for all living things in GODS creations through out the known and unknown worlds.   Yes, the West must accept that they stone to death women for adultery and being alone with a male.
  
  And the West must accept that they kill infidels who convert to another religion. Too, it is important for the West to understand ands respect that it is good and proper when they murder their daughters for wearing lipstick or dating a Westerner or refusing to marry someone they have selected for her.
  
  Too, there’s always death sentences by stoning or hanging for homosexuals.

  The first amendment is one of the great achievements of civilization. Cultures that cannot understand the value for freedom of speech are primitive. The way to handle these barbarians is to stake out a position emphasizing that no compromise is possible with freedom. This is a freedom that has been watered by the blood of patriots and will be defended at any cost. The Constitution and the Bill of Rights are what we should be adhering to. Although it is with a heavy heart that I must admit that when this country’s supreme court legalized the killing of babies for convenience because a woman “owns her own body”, that was the moment in our history where we saw the actual start in the decline and destruction of this country….Think about this, if women own their bodies and kill babies in utero and doctors can kill babies born alive because the mother is incovenienced by a child and doesn’t want it then why shouldn’t we all be able to kill ourselves when we want?   Respect, like disrespect,is usually earned…I think we need to let these people decide what century they wish to be a member of, various Christian sects have a volume or two of sins committed in Christ’s name. We have the Reformation, Vatican II etc., Islam needs to go thru something like that. And we need to NOT be a part of it. We do not need the Arab World and they do not need us. China and India will buy all the oil we don’t and other than oil, there is nothing we need from them. Switch to natural gas in all vehicles a 3-5 year conversion, cleaner GREENER fuel, million of new jobs and infrastructure to support it..all US/Canadian fuels…between US/CA/Mex production, all our oil needs will be met. Stop ALL USA aid/loans/food/visas to ALL Arab nations,remove the cancer called America. Let these people go. they are a bright,honest, hard working people, peace loving…remove the US influence and watch them THRIVE !!!   Well, this is what we in the US claim we want: democracy in the Middle East. Surprise, once they have it we find that the popularly elected leaders don’t like us so much, which reflects the opinion of the population. And, if you keep up, the rest of the world is overly fond of us either (far less before Bush than when he left he office).
  
  Many people don’t understand why other countries don’t bow down and worship the US as they did after WWII. Times have changed, and we live in the world we live in, not the US worshiping world we wish were the case.
  
  The US has to deal with countries based on the reality of what that country believes, not what we wish they believed. We can bribe them with foreign assistance, but history shows we can’t keep Arab leaders in power with money, nor can we now tell them what they must believe or how to run their country. America can’t force Egyptians to love us, we can only gradually bring them over to our side. Sorry if that sounds too Christian.

  Here is what we really need to learn: For over two-thousand years, the middle-east has consumed the resources and might of many empires, leaving them in graveyards along the way. Let’s move beyond our understanding and knowledge of history, and show the world we can apply its lessons in a meaningful way. Let’s pull all of our troops and vast resources and isolate these cretins to stew in their own juices. And I mean the lot of them!

  Sadly, as scholars have been saying for decades, we are witnessing the end-game of the centuries long Jihad for Egypt. Were we not so weakened by the deep, deep Islamic deception under which we have labored for so very long, we would know exactly who the enemy is and exactly what to do.
  
  Here is a good idea. Shut down the Department of Defense and reconstitute it under the original name “The War Department”: then use it for its intended purpose. Use our War Department as a potent weapon to defend and expand America’s influence at the expense and diminishment of Islamic civilization. Imagine American soldiers fighting for America’s goals instead of the goals of the House of Saud. It would be amazing.

Have respect for a culture that wants to impose it’s beliefs on everyone? I don’t think so. Everyday the mulims prove that it’s not us against them, its them against us. They use any excuse that can, and right now, they think that since we have a coward in the White House, they can get away with anything. Well, if they want war, then bring it. But they shouuld remember that the Japanese knew trhey couldn’t invade the United States, as there would be “a gun behind every blade of grass”. That hasn’t changed. Yeah, they’ll get some of us, but we’ll get more. A lot more. I’m 60 years old, and I’d like to live many more years if that’s Heavenly Fathers will, but I will not, nor will the people I know, live in fear. Don’t mistake our desire for peace as weakness, or as a sign that we’ve forgotten how to be violent. WE all want peace, but the choice is THEIRS, and THEIRS alone. We’re armed. We’re waiting. We’re ready for peace, but prepared to protect ourselves and the ones that we love.

Respect………….its called free speach……it has Nothing to do with respect. The day we bend to animals like yourself is the day………I die for free speach, period. Your religion is the most hateful killing barbaric religion of all mans history….no matter what you say or do……….we will have free speach and a new president to tell you so in one way…cut your funds till you become civilized.

Muslims everywhere must respect the Unite States of America and its culture even if it interferes with or contradicts Islam. Muslims must apologize for what they have done and pay reparations for the people they killed and property they destroyed. Muslim nations must pay for the expenses NATO incurred fighting the war Muslims started. They will not be required to accept responsibility and guilt but they must understand and acknowledge what they have done. None of these terms are negotiable and if further resistance continues the West will not accept responsibility for Muslims killed in a atomic war.

  I expect Muslims to respect America, her culture and traditions and not try to FUNDAMENTALLY transform her. We were flying last week and just before boarding, there was an announcement that said ID had to be shown before boarding. OK. A few minutes later a Muslim woman in black, head to toe, with only her eyes showing is waiting to board our plane. I asked my husband, hm, how do they show ID. The next announcement said please show your boarding pass. What happened to the photo ID?

  This is the Ultimatum of the American people to the Muslim people in the Middle East and is irrespective of what our Renegade Obama Regime my do or say. Failure to accept the terms of this ultimatum will indicate that there exists a state of war between the American People and the Muslim governments of the Middle East. As of this time, Muslim nations outside of the geographic area normally called the Middle East are excluded. The American people will request the activation of every security treaty now in existence that we have with other nations. The Eagle is the symbol of the American people and that eagle holds a branch of arrows in one of its talons. Pay close attention to those arrows. The American people have paid a terrible sacrifice in blood and treasure in the past for its liberty and freedom and has sacrificed its treasure to build the worlds most impressive military force that can respond swiftly to any enemy anywhere on this planet.
  
  We will no longer act the part of a cower, and will from now one carry out our global policies as a Super Power could be expected to. You should realize that being a friend of the American people is preferable and more rewarding than being at the receiving end of unrestricted modern warfare. For the sake of your grate people and your children reconsider your policy.

  Muffy, if you haven’t seen 2016 obama’s America….you need to see it soon. His goal is to disarm us, while the whole planet is nuking up….. that’s why it’s so important that we ALL unite behind Mitt Romney, and not split the vote, and do whatever is necessary, donate (if possible), register (take a friend or two), and vote…..

  Respect between nations is earned and maintained by some key means:
  
  Diplomatic ties
  Economic ties
  Cultural ties
  Social ties
  Military ties
  Military deterence
  
  The last one especially with unstable regimes such as Egypt; this is the message of “hit first, I hit back with a ton of bricks,” style of deterence. Sustained peace through capable might of arms, which they do respect when you are among the largest mutts in the region.
