TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran plans to expand its naval presence in international waters as part of efforts to boost its military and extend its reach as far as Antarctica, the head of the country’s navy said Saturday.
The comments from Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari reflect Iran’s aspirations to transform its navy into a force capable of sustained operations in the open ocean. They also are seen as a response to America’s beefed-up naval deployment near the Islamic Republic’s coasts in the Persian Gulf. The U.S. Navy’s 5th fleet is based in Bahrain – across the gulf from Iran.
“We have the capability to hoist Iran’s flag in different regions from the North Poles to the South Pole and we are preparing plans for a presence near the South Pole,” state Press TV quoted Sayyari as saying. “However, we will never enter the maritime borders of others and we will not allow anybody to enter even a centimeter into our territorial waters.”
Earlier this month, Sayyari said Iran aims to put warships in international waters off the U.S. coast “within the next few years.” He also said Iran’s navy would be “present anywhere in international waters in order to safeguard the Islamic Republic’s interests.”
The Iranian navy has steadily expanded its international presence since 2008 when it began patrolling in the Gulf of Aden to protect commercial vessels owned or leased by Iran against piracy. Last year, two Iranian warships for the first time in decades traveled through the Suez Canal, extending Iran’s naval reach to the Mediterranean Sea. Now, some Iranian ships also operate in the northern Indian Ocean.
Iran’s deputy navy chief, Admiral Abbas Zamini, said in June that Iran has begun to design its first nuclear submarine.
Iran and the West are odds over Tehran’s nuclear program. The U.S. suspects it is aimed at a nuclear weapon, a charge Iran denies.

It isn’t Tehran’s nuclear program that Iran and the West are at odds over though:

Ahmadinejad: Remove US dollar as major oil trading currency (Xinhua) Updated: 2007-11-19 18:59
RIYADH – Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said here on Sunday that it is necessary to replace the US dollar with other major hard currencies in oil trading.
Ahmadinejad made the remarks at a news conference in the third summit of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries’ (OPEC) in the Saudi capital of Riyadh.
“There should be a credible and good currency to take over US dollar’s role and to serve oil trades,” he said.
Oil producing countries are not benefited much from the current oil prices, said he, attributing it to the devaluation of US dollar and the high taxation imposed by western banks.
“The money had come to a handful of super-rich capitalist,” he said, calling for the establishment of an specialized bank named “OPEC bank” to safeguard the interest of OPEC member states in the oil trading.
Hugo Chavez, Venezuelan President, firstly put forward the idea of “OPEC bank” in the summit’s opening speech on Saturday, saying that OPEC can make research of new resources and seek more cooperation to reduce the climate changes.
Regarding the Gulf situation, Ahmadinejad ruled out the possibility of a new war in the region, saying that if any power did it, it would commit huge mistakes and would be unable to manage the war.
He then said that Iran and the neighboring Gulf countries share the same culture and have friendship, and Iran

He then said that Iran and the neighboring Gulf countries share the same culture and have friendship, and Iran would consult with other Arab nations on a plan to enrich uranium in a neutral country.
Ahmadinejad arrived in Riyadh Friday to attend the OPEC summit, which ended on Sunday night with the issue of Riyadh Declaration.

Sep. 22, 2012 at 4:39pmDon’t you know we have 20-30 years to fix our dollar and make it stable again? Or is that 20-30 days, or perhaps minutes.
Okay, I’ll stop goofing around.
NEVER IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD HAS AN UNBACKED PAPER CURRENCY SURVIVED! PERIOD!
It has been done repeatedly and has failed every time because it simply has absolutely no inherent value (it even makes lousy toilet paper). Until this go-around, the longest lived unbacked paper currency was in the Ming Dynasty in China, it lasted roughly 25 years before it failed.
Always in the past one country would go on the “paper” standard while all it’s neighbors remained on the “gold” standard (backed currency). When the printing presses rolled to much (like QE1,2,3) the value of the currency declines creating inflation and then hyperinflation.
Only this time WILL BE DIFFERENT. IT WILL BE SOMETHING NEVER BEFORE SEEN IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD! Right now, every currency around the world is a fiat paper currency, which has never before been the case. Even the Swiss Franc is no longer protected by gold, but by the Euro! Anyway, simply look at the mess Europe is in because that is probably where it will begin. The Euro is currently in the preliminary inflation cycle, as is the dollar. Only the Euro is also probably going to not hyper-inflate, but collapse. That is expected to very quickly collapse every fiat paper currency around the world. probably in 1-4 days, possibly overnight.
Guess what, the COLLAPSE IS IMMINENT!

I’d be OK with it if they weren’t declaring their intentions to rid the world of Jews every 10 seconds.

That’s a Jewish problem, not an American problem. It is precisely this attitude, translated into policy, that is the problem. If your neighbor had nukes, you’d want nukes too. Israel has nukes. Can’t blame them. Should have stopped Israel from getting nukes, if that were your real concern.

We have almost a dozen treaties with Israel promising our support in any military conflict that doesn’t interfere with our other treaties. If you want to argue that we should renegotiate these treaties – fine….

“But there are legal problems for Jews in Iran – if one member of a Jewish family converts to Islam he can inherit all the family’s property.”

But while we are on the subject… Palestinians are free to own property, vote, enter the military (voluntarily of course- only Jewish Israelis are required to serve), run for office, own businesses, etc.
The context of the premise on which this side- note began involved Jews in Iran- which have none or few of the aforementioned rights.

Sep. 22, 2012 at 2:47pmThe_Jerk … Look up history .. No american soldier was killed in any of the arab isreali wars. America provided AWAC support. Regarding wealth .. The amount of money given to Isreal is less than the amount given to all the muslim countries that want to destroy. It is just that Isreal uses the money effectively vs the leaders of the muslims countries that line their pockets becasue they know they will not be in power long.

Sep. 22, 2012 at 2:57pmChromo200, your ignorance is bliss. Were it not for Israel, our marines would not have been in Lebanon. In Iraq. On the USS Liberty… . And, we would be trillions of dollars richer.

Sep. 22, 2012 at 4:43pmJerk: and if it weren’t for Hitler and his regime’s hatred and targeting of Jews, we wouldn’t have had to create the state of Israel. Apparently you are still targeting them. Now, you read some history as you so arrogantly told East to do.

Sep. 22, 2012 at 4:50pmJERK. What you parrot (based on what I read in response from you throughout this topic) is not American policy, but Ron Paul’s isolationist/anti-Semitic musings and just plain idiotic ramblings.
The damn Jews are behind pretty much everything according to Paul… to include the Marines killed in Beirut in ’81 (not to mention American taxpayers paying for and our gub’ment supplying the explosives). Ohhh, and yes…. the USS Liberty incident AND conspiracy. Let’s not forget theose Jews behind 9/11 (as told to Paul by a… ahem, Jewish friend of his, lol).
One thing that seems clear is that Paul’s natural instinct (which his zealots and acolytes like you JERK people around with) is to disbelieve that Muslim terrorism can exist unless those rascally Jews are behind it somehow. Just like Ron Paul’s Newsletters pointing to Ron Paul being a racist 9or at the very least a closet racist), along with his strain of Libertarian ideology… Paul’s own word’s point to him being an anti-Semite and extreme hater of Israel (one of our best and necessary allies);
Orrrrrr maybe… Ron Paul’s just misunderstood eh? Lmao.

Sep. 22, 2012 at 1:45pmOh, no! Iran in the Antarctic! Well, Madeline, you better call the Sea Shepherd and have that ship protect the Antarctic, because any US Navy Ship that is sent there might get blown up by… ISRAEL!
If you STILL do NOT know the story of the USS Liberty which was INTENTIONALLY attacked by Israel or if you STILL do NOT know WHY Israel attacked the US Navy intelligence ship USS Liberty, then you need to go Google it.
As an American, I stand with the crew of the USS Liberty. As an Christian, I stand with JESUS CHRIST. Do you hear me Glenn, NO WAR FOR ISRAEL. If Bibi Netanyahu wants to NUKE Iran, FINE. But let Bibi use ISRAEL’s NUKES to do it. Let ISRAEL risk JEWISH LIVES and not the lives of us GOYIM to do it. I am through being the Jews’ USEFUL IDIOT. LET ISRAEL DEFEND ISRAEL!!! She is NO ALLY OF THE USA!!!

Sep. 22, 2012 at 1:40pmWell, Mr. President are you for Iran or Israel? I am for Israel. Iran isn’t ashamed of their flag however like the President and his wife who whispered (all this for a flag?). Strength of America is nothing to be ashamed of now or ever. . God Bless America.

Neither. A real Christian does involve him/her-self in the squabbles of others… unless it is on the side of peace. Tired of hypocrites.

Sep. 22, 2012 at 4:48pmPoor Jerk. He actually thinks that you can appease a bully by ignoring him. Europe and England felt that way about old Hitler who also hated Jews ! Didn’t work. Evil and twisted bullies just can’t respond to ” kind.” They don’t do ” kind.”

Sep. 22, 2012 at 1:34pmThey have large ambitions that may yet be achieved, and the confrontation they seek with the US Navy in blue waters can be summed up this way:
“Admiral – the Iranian navy is (BOOM) – correction sir, was about to engage us in battle.”
After that, we arrange diving expeditions for eco – tourism to the wreckage beneath the waves.

Sep. 22, 2012 at 1:35pmNo kidding, given enough time the Iranians could field a viable enough naval threat to challenge us for control of the gulf – a very short challenge, but they could in theory inflict damage. Most likely if they develop a long range naval capacity to our shores or that of South America it would be so the ships could lay sea mines in the main shipping lanes of the oceans.
