Libyans Drive Islamic Militias From Benghazi in Massive Protest

(TheBlaze/AP) — Benghazi residents warned Saturday of a “revolution” to rid the city of militias and Islamic extremists after protests against the armed groups– spurred in part by the killing of the U.S. ambassador– left at least four dead in an unprecedented eruption of public frustration.

On Friday, protesters overwhelmed the compound of the Ansar al-Shariah Brigade in the center of the eastern city of Benghazi.  Ansar al-Shariah fighters initially fired in the air to disperse the crowd, but eventually abandoned the site with their weapons and vehicles after it was overrun by waves of protesters shouting “No to militias.”

“I don’t want to see armed men wearing Afghani-style clothes stopping me in the street to give me orders, I only want to see people in uniform,” said Omar Mohammed, a university student who took part in the takeover of the site, which protesters said was done in support of the army and police.

After storming the Ansar al-Shariah compound, the protesters reportedly moved onto the base of a second Islamist militia, the Rafallah Sahati Brigade. Brigade fighters opened fire to keep the protesters at bay.

The state news agency Saturday said four protesters were killed and 70 injured in the overnight violence.

In a sign of how weak the country’s post-Moammar Gadhafi leadership remains, authorities tried to stem popular anger by pleading that some of the militias are needed to keep the country safe, since the police and army are incapable of doing so.

During the day Saturday there were no new protests, but the city of 1 million in eastern Libya was brimming with anger, rumors and conspiracy theories.

Adding to the tensions, the bodies of six soldiers were found in the morning dumped on the outskirts of the city, shot through the forehead and their hands cuffed, state TV reported. An army colonel was reported missing, feared kidnapped. Some media reports accused militiamen taking revenge on Gadhafi-era veterans in the military; in contrast, a military spokesman, Ali al-Shakhli, blamed Gadhafi loyalists, saying they were trying to stir up trouble between the public and militias.

Since Gadhafi’s ouster and death around a year ago, a series of interim leaders have struggled to bring order to a country that was eviscerated under his 42-year regime, with security forces and the military intentionally kept weak and government institutions hollowed of authority.

The militias, which arose as people took up arms to fight Gadhafi during last year’s eight-month civil war, have typified the problem. They bristle with heavy weapons, pay little attention to national authorities and are accused by some of acting like gangs, carrying out killings. Islamist militias often push their demands for enforcement of strict Shariah law.

On Saturday, armed Rafallah Shahati militiamen – weary from the clashes the night before – guarded the entrance to their compound, standing next to charred cars. The fighters, some in military uniforms, others dressed in Afghan Mujahedeen-style outfits, were indignant.

“Those you call protesters are looters and thieves,” said Nour Eddin al-Haddad, a young man with an automatic rifle slung on his back. “We fought for the revolution. We are the real revolutionaries.”

Activists and protesters, however, say it is time the militias disband and the army and security forces take control. Benghazi lawyer Ibrahim al-Aribi said that if the government doesn’t act, “there will be a second revolution and the spark will be Benghazi.”

“We want stability and rule of law so we can start building the state, but the Tripoli government appears to have not yet quite understood people’s demands,” he said.

Farag Akwash, a 22-year-old protester wounded in the arm during the night’s clashes, insisted, “We don’t want to see militias in the city anymore. We only want to see army and police.”

The Sept. 11 attack against the U.S. Consulate that killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans galvanized public anger against the militias, according to the Associated Press. Some 30,000 people marched through Benghazi on Friday to the gates of the Ansar al-Shariah compound, demanding the groups disband. The storming of the compound came hours later after the march ended.

President Mohammed El-Megaref called on protesters to leave alone militias that are “under state legitimacy, and go home.”

Omar Humidan, assembly spokesman, acknowledged that militias “have wrong practices … serve their own agenda and have their own ideology.” But he warned that “striking these militias and demanding they disband immediately will have grave consequences.”

“These are the ones that preserve security,” he said. “The state has a weak army and no way it can fill any vacuum resulting in eviction of these militias. … The street is upset because of the militias and their infighting. We are worried of the fallout in the absence of those militias. The state must be given the time.”

Fathi Fadhali, a prominent Islamist thinker in Benghazi, said the description of some militias as “legitimate” just contradicts common sense.

“How can you be a militia and legitimate at the same time?” he said. “How do you leave a group of extremists taking charge of security?  Yes, you can accept their help for the short term but not long-term.

“The state must interfere as soon as possible – even, excuse me to say it, by using force – before everything collapses. I am extremely worried.”

One of the protesters explained his reason for attending the demonstration: “I am out today to defend Benghazi…Killing [Ambassador Stevens] is a completely separate thing…I don’t give a damn about the killing of the ambassador because the Americans offended the Prophet. I am just here for Benghazi.”

“bring order to a country that was eviscerated under his (Gadhafi) 42-year regime” Sorry the country was eviscerated by the United States and NATO. All we have done is replace one dictator with a weak alliance of thugs and terrorists.

agreed. though it is heartening to see that there are those who may actually be willing to stand up to the extremists and terrorists after all. They are in a position to do what we cannot; identify exact targets and make sure those who are a danger to us and them are neutralized and/or eliminated.

      And got results like these
40 Members of Congress Protest ‘Indefinite Detention
      ACLU: Stop Indefinite Detention

The Democrats are always about 35 to 55% of Congress. So a threat of impeachment is real. The press is worth 15 points (per Newsweek’s assistant managing editor Evan Thomas). Makes it hard to get elected or even to have sufficient member of your party elected to matter on the national stage.

You have to give a little. Put it this way. Sky scrapers are built to sway. If the were built completely rigid, the would never stand for long. In a fight you give ground at times or you would be quickly pawned.

You are starting from the assumption that Bush had the political capital & the popularity to stand up to the Democrats. Remember Democrats have a 15 pottn advantage due to the MSM.

Given the nature of the progs, I thought George Bush was going to be impeached over health care.
War or no war, the progs were out to stop anything Bush tried to at the very least or impeach if they could. Especially after all the bitterness of the 2000 election results. Where the Democrats did not want to count the overseas military vote (& still don’t for that matter).

My position on Democrats has hardened after what I learned about the press & Cronkite & how they treated Eisenhower because he went on the Republican ticket.

The best thing would be to have two countries & let the Democrats have their socialism (which will work this time) & let it devolve ever typically into oligarch.

Anyway it hasn’t been nice talking to you as you are stupid & arrogant.

LOGICISYOURFRIEND, That is truly what you call yourself? Logic, blah, blah? How captures much less actual releases do you suppose that President Bush hopped down to GITMO in Air Force 1 and put his finger prints all over the paperwork? Okay, I’ll certainly agree that the release occurred during the Bush administration, but you’ll have to admit that Fast & Furious occurred under the 0bama administration. So, what is your point? You still stuck on that blame Bush thingy? He was not necessarily released by the Bush Administration either. He was repatriated to Libya’s Abu Salim prison due to overcrowding at GITMO, as well as pressure from various liberal groups complaining, demonstrating, as well as filing law suites to get as many prisoners out of there. It was the Libyans who released him in 2010 when there was a change of mind there regarding political prisoners. Yeah, with us he was an imprisoned combatant, but a political prisoner to the Libyans. In the future, dislodge your head from your 4th point of contact instead of making up a story that sounds the way you would like it. There are a good number of us here who tend to really know what is going on. Furthermore, the rest of the time we can actually use our search engines.

True, he didn’t. But then again, Obama didn’t fly to Libya and unlock the consulate doors, but many are acting like it.
My point is that people are so quick to blame the other “side”, while they dismiss any wrong doing of their “side”.

Libyans have a chance, tho’ slim, of building a middle class thanx to 2 things:
      1) lots of sweet gas&oil
      2) Qaddafi left them without a strong military class that owns 99.9% of the country and terrorizes its own people UNLIKE Pakistan and Egypt who have become ‘armies with a country’ where an evil military oligarchy rules thanx to corrupting US billions (like UN$$$ in Haiti, Africa) pouring in yearly.
Egyptians and Pakistanis, both once proud to live in urbane modern jewels of Islam, hate the US for propping up, defending and enriching ruthless goons like Mubarak and Musharref year after year who destroyed their democratic rights and freedoms and their country.
KSM, 911′s chief, was brutally tortured by Mubarak, as were so many others who became rabid anti-American Muslim Brotherhood jihadists because of it.
The US cannot claim barbaric tyrants as allies and expect the terrorized citizens of those states to remain friends of USA. Remember the psycho Bautista US chose to rule Cuba, whose dwarf bit off scrota of his political foes.
Rome defeated Carthage not because of military prowess – Carthage had better weapons & strategies – but because it forged better allies. US has dumped corn and guns into Mexico, devastating its people and has robbed Canada of billions in oil & gas revenue, devalued thru bottleneck stockpiles and vetoed pipelines BUT Sauds, Putin, Chavez, Iran get full $.

Listen here missy, I have not met a German citizen who said they felt occupied by American soldiers in Germany.

Since Germany regained its independence May 5, 1955, America can only be there with German approval. The status of Americans forces is governed by a S.O.F.A. Maybe you have hear of a SOFA? Maybe you have not because you are stupid liberal (Wait that is redundant). Places where American troops are governed in the most part by a SOFAs unless it be an enemy state or ungoverned space.

You can find your commie types in other countries who say they are occupied, but they are a fraction of the population just like they are here. You are one of those commie types. I know people in some of those occupied countries like South Korea, Japan & Germany. They never once told me that they felt occupied.

Who know Logic maybe we will meet.

      Walkabout,
We have a SOFA with Libya?
And when did we start talking about Germany or Japan? I was talking about reactions of people in the Middle East to armed U.S. soldiers, and how it might alter their attitudes. Most Americans are good people, but I can tell you if I had armed foreign soldiers in my town, they wouldn’t see my best side.

WALKABOUT, I can back you up regarding the fact that we were paying rent for every place we had troops. We were closing out some of the smaller kasernes where I was last stationed and I had a chance to see some of the paper work. During my three tours there as well as working at SHAPE, Belgium none of these people had reason to fear us. Well, maybe the newbies before they learned to drive in Germany. Naturally, Logic has no idea what you mean since we have no troops stationed in Libya and would have no reason to have a SOFA with them. I get the feeling that we are talking to a rock.

We had a SOFA with Iraq, which was for about 2 years. We were negotiating a new SOFA with Obama negotiating in bad faith. We didn’t get a SOFA so we pulled out.

I gave South Korea, Japan & Germany as EXAMPLES of countries that we have SOFAs with. These are also countries that the left American local & international pi$$es & moans that we are occupying. You are one of the people pi$$ing & moaning. I know for a fact that many service members who break the law are tired in Japanese & South Korean Courts & are jailed there. The SOFA covers that. After they are released they are expelled back to America to become Democrat voters.

For small details protecting consulates, embassies & ambassadors & I am not sure what kind of agreement we had with Libya. If the Libyan said that the protection had to go, we would have protested. If they said it again the protection had to go, the protection would have left the country as would the ambassador.

No peace out, you lie to much!

Those people better stand or they will be killed in their sleep. They should die fighting for freedom from those militias. They need to kill and throw all those Sharia Islamists in the gutter and get on with a form of government that will protect them instead of killing them off. They must be a better bunch that what we have been seeing who are trying to rule every aspect of their lives. They need to keep on and not let up, for if they do, they will be destroyed by that evil.

The people of Libya are not opposed to Sharia law. Their transitional government has even called for more islamic conformity in their laws. They are only fighting against the foreign fighters who have invaded their country and who are trying to take control due to the security vacuum.

In the 1990s Algerian Islamicists use to kill 200 to 300 people in villages in a single night. Young women of the village were humanely spared so they could serve (so to speak) the Islamicists back at base camp.

Those Algerian Islamicists are now the backbone of Al Qaeda in North Africa (Mahgreb). Neat huh?
And the are a__ f______ stupid liberals, who want to work things out with them.

Like the Old Testement stories,When Isreal was obeying and following God’s leading, He would bring them to a situation that they could not humanly overcome. God would do the miraculous. Maybe these fools will suddenly turn on each other and wipe each other out! We can only hope and pray!

Remember Saddam ? Remember Gaddafi ? These people just had the type of government they deserved . The type of government which could keep them under control. Sad but true. Are they going to evolve politically to something more advanced ? Hmmmm…..

No they have no idea what freedom is about. We spend a lot of money and blood saving them from dictators and all they do fight each other and bite the hand that feeds them.

      @TruthSeeker

Civil war is a possible occurance here; it depends on how long it will take one or more of the militia forces to respond with full lethal force when the attacks come, which groups throw in with whom, and who finally emerges as the dominate leader of the masses in the end.

Unless it is a truely exceptional leader able to unite the masses for an effective government to be built – which all too easily can become another dictatorship – then another round of war is ordained.
