French Nationalist Politician Calls for Ban on Jewish Kippah as Well as Muslim Headscarf
The leader of France’s far-right nationalist party, Marine Le Pen, is calling for a ban not only of Muslim headscarves but also the wearing of the kippah – or Jewish skullcap – in public.
In an interview with the French newspaper Le Monde, Le Pen called for religious headwear to be banned “in stores, on public transport and on the streets.”
AFP reports on this latest controversy over religious tolerance in France, already rocked once in recent days by the publishing of offensive drawings depicting the Muslim Prophet Muhammad in X-rated positions:
Asked whether the ban should apply to the Jewish skullcap, known as the kippah or yarmulke, as well as Muslim headwear, she said: “It is obvious that if the veil is banned, the kippah is banned in public as well.”
Le Pen, who shocked the French elite by winning almost 18% in the first round of this year’s presidential vote, also repeated calls for bans on public prayers, kosher and halal foods in schools and foreign government financing of mosques in France.
President Francois Hollande denounced her comments, saying: “Everything that tears people apart, opposes them and divides them is inappropriate, and we must apply the rules, the only rules that we know, the rules of the Republic and secularism.”
Condemnation from France’s Jewish and Muslim leaders also came quickly:
Richard Prasquier, who heads France’s main Jewish council CRIF, said the statement showed there were “secular fanatics just as there are religious fanatics.”
“Obviously, I am hostile to both,” he said.
The main Muslim council CFCM said the far-right icon wanted to “set up a totalitarian regime in France.”
The Jewish Telegraphic Agency explains that Le Pen has long “supported a ban on Muslim headscarves, niqabs and burkas,” but the addition of banning the Jewish religious symbol was new. The wearing of conspicuous religious symbols – including large crosses as well as Muslim and Jewish symbols – is already banned in French public schools. France has also banned the public wearing of full Muslim veils.
Because of their experience under the Nazi regime in World War II, French Jews are particularly sensitive to any hint of their religious ritual being outlawed. JTA quotes the president of the Conference of European Rabbis, Rabbi Pinchas Goldschmidt:
“Her suggestion of a ban on wearing a kipah in public takes us straight back to the times of state-sponsored anti-Semitism under the Vichy regime,” he said. “Any sane politician will disqualify these comments as total madness and profoundly insulting to the French ideals of freedom of expression.”
There has been a debate recently in conservative Jewish circles over the how advisable it has been to create partnerships with the populist, nationalistic parties that have cropped up around Europe amidst the challenges posed by multiculturalism and an emergence of radical Islam on the continent. The thought was – with a rise in anti-Semitic acts carried out by Muslim immigrants to Europe – alliances should be forged where there is some common ground.
Dr. Amiel Ungar – an Israeli political science professor and occasional spokesman for Jewish settlers – tackled the dilemma in an op-ed in Israel National News on Sunday. He writes:
However, by equating the need for a ban on the Jewish kippa (skullcap) to a ban on the Muslim veil in public Le Pen showed that in order to circumscribe the Muslim population she would be prepared to sacrifice the interest of Jews, even though the record of Jewish integration in France is totally at variance with what has happened with Islam.
Le Pen herself admitted this when she sought to clarify her remarks in an interview with Le Monde, where she first proposed suppressing the kippa in the public space. Speaking on TF1 television, the National Front leader said “the kippa does not pose a problem in our country” However, she called upon French Jewry to make “this little effort, the small sacrifice” to put everybody on an equal footing and rebut the charge that a ban on the veil represented Islamophobia.
Geert Wilders who heads the Party for Freedom (PVV) in the Netherlands also surprised his Jewish allies in the U.S. and abroad when it was learned his party was supporting a ban on ritual slaughter – which would include the production of kosher meat in the Netherlands.
Israel’s Chief Rabbi Yona Metzger was so distraught over this, he wrote a strongly-worded letter to Wilders:
“It is obvious that one cannot be at the same time a friend of Israel and the Jewish people and on the other hand support an anti-Jewish law,” Metzger wrote.
“By denying Jews to live according to the Torah you will eventually force them to leave the Netherlands where they enjoyed religious freedom for centuries.”
Metzger wrote that he was “shocked and upset to learn that your party once again has adopted a total ban on ritual slaughter in its platform.”
“This is the classical anti-Semitic way our rites have been targeted and demonized throughout history,” he wrote.
Prof. Ungar in his op-ed equates Wilders’ position to French politician Le Pen’s, suggesting that the ban on kosher slaughter is just another “small sacrifice” being asked of Jews in order to make more palatable the ban on Muslim halal meat.

Posted on September 24, 2012 at 4:25pmI am just curious:
Why is “denying Jews to live according to the Torah” bad, but denying Muslims to live according to the Koran is OK (and in the USA, denying Christians to live according to the Bible) is OK?

Posted on September 24, 2012 at 10:43amThe thing to remember is that freedom of speech and freedom of religion don’t really exist outside the USA. In particular, they don’t really exist in Europe. Occasionally some countries pay lip service to the idea. But much of the time it’s considered perfectly normal for the government to ban certain speech, or certain religious expressions. For example, you’re welcome to say anything you want so long as it doesn’t annoy anyone. And you’re welcome to be religious so long as you hide it carefully.
The Bill of Rights is a unique and precious thing. Protect and defend it, or end up with no freedom, as in Europe.

You hate muslims and agree that their head gear is wrong, but you love the jews (in your own weird way) and think the band on their head gear is wrong and anti Semitic. What a conundrum. There really is no way legitimately make that silly argument. France has the right idea and is not attacking religion. Keep your supernatural belief system out of the public eye.

Posted on September 24, 2012 at 2:45pmI disagree, Vaman. Many religions, not just Islam and Judaism, have public symbols. Yet, Islam is unique among any religion with regards to its incompatability with Western-style Republics. The inability of Western peoples to drop the PC pretense and single out Islam will be the end of France’s Republic as well as our own. By dropping the commitment to religious freedom, we set the stage for Islam to step in and become the only tolerated religion. France, like the USA, must begin to single out Islam by name, and declare that, in its normative form, Islam is simply incompatible with the Republic, and cannot be allowed to infiltrate and subvert our culture. It’s not politically correct, but it is either do that, or watch the slow, painful death of our constitution.

Posted on September 24, 2012 at 1:27amFrance is a secular country.
French religious policy is based on the concept of laïcité, a strict separation of Church and State under which public life is kept completely secular.
From 2004 any religious apparel or displays by individuals, such as the Islamic hijab, Sikh turban, “large” Christian crosses and Jewish Stars of David, has been banned from public schools.
In the spring of 2011 there was a reinforcement of laïcité in hospitals and in public service generally.
It is a stupid thing, that all religilous brands must have their own supporter gear.
The world would be better of if all religilous people kept all of their superstitions, muted inside their head, not on it.

Talking gibberish about us and them, applying their holeyer then thou attitude, spreading their own version of the message of love that only apply to them, setting of bombs and invading countries. Posted on September 24, 2012 at 12:29amThe Jewish people have no history of violence against their host countries. So a kippah should not be seen as implying or threatening any violence. Whether the number is small or large, Muslim extremists have made open threats against their hosts countries, in this case both America and France. Muslim extremists have stated the desire for Sharia law to overtake the law of the land. Jews have never, ever made any claims that Jewish law should supercede the the laws of the land they live in.

This nation better not even attempt to go there unless someone has their face covered. That should not have to be, anyway. Who would want to sit under a mask of some type all the time while they are outside. It would be a good way to disguise for robbery and criminal acts, so it is best left off. The hats do not hurt a thing. The skull caps are just another way to get anything doing with God out of sight for these secular heatherns.

Posted on September 24, 2012 at 12:47pmIt makes NO sense to say that people should be free to wear religious items so long as they don’t cover up their faces. Why not cover up your face? If you cover your face with glasses, is that ok? If you cover up your face with a beard, is that ok? With a turban?
You either have freedom, or you don’t. “You’re free except …” means you’re NOT free.
The argument that you have to be able to see people’s faces or they might commit crimes is utter garbage. That amounts to saying everyone is a criminal. Nonsense. You’re a criminal if you commit a crime. If not, then it doesn’t matter what your face looks like.
If you love freedom, you have to be consistent. If you say “I want freedom A but I don’t want freedom B”, you have no argument at all against the guy who takes away your favorite freedom while leaving another intact. If you only support some freedom, why is your selection of “approved” freedoms any better than Hilary’s? If you object to a muslim’s freedom to wear his religious garb, how you can claim to be entitled to your freedom to wear your religious emblems? How can you claim to be entitled to your freedom to bear arms?
The right answer is “I support your freedom. Will you support mine?”

Posted on September 23, 2012 at 5:36pmActually the truly British food isn’t bad it’s a bit like homemade American food. Much of the anglo-Saxon inspired dishes in America originate from British food. Soul food qualities to it. If you like home cooked food. Roast beef/lamb/chicken, stews, pot roasts, pot pies, baked potatoes, gravies, etc. Its a very steak and potatoes cuisine. Fish and chips are great too of you like seafood, the chips are no and thick not the skimpy Fries we get (think steak fries fried in butter). Also the breakfasts were nice too but different. Personally liked the grilled portabellas that came with nearly every breakfast. Of course, sandwiches are a classic british invention.
Now if you are looking for the snobby uppity high class gourmet stuff like the reputation French cuisine gets it doesn’t get it. But we all know about the snobby French don’t we? No frenchies, your food isn’t that good, and doesn’t bring back memories of my Grandmother’s cooking.
However British junk food which often consists of imported food concepts from around the world does suck for the most part!

Considering how many “treyf” Christians live in Israel, it’s quite clear they get by just fine. I’ve been to Israel and there are plenty of non-kosher food options. Admittedly, one is less likely to find such options in more religious neighborhoods, but that’s supply and demand at work. You claim Israel is theocratic when there are more non-religious Jews than religious ones living there.
Simply put, you are an agitator who seeks only to spread lies about Israel in order to breed hatred. And you Jerk, with your half-truths, double standards, and propaganda are no better.

Posted on September 24, 2012 at 3:20pmOkay Pigpen: Here’s why your post is an epic fail. First of all, Israel is the Jewish State. If you have no issues with free states having an official religion as its basis for civil law – like the U.S.A. and Christianity, not to mention all the Islamic Republics, why do you have trouble with one tiny Jewish one? Second, missionary work is restricted to working within one’s own community. Christians can evangelize Christians, Jews can try to get Jews to be more observant, and Muslims can try to get Muslims to be more religious. After 2000 years of having Muslims and Christians nicely and not so nicely try to get Jews to turn their backs on their faith, you will forgive the Jews for creating a small place on earth where they can be left alone. Third, Israel is hardly a theocracy. While its laws are informed by Jewish law (what else would you suggest for a Jewish State?), the laws are made by a parliament of elected representatives, and adjudicated by a very independent (and currently activist) and mostly secular court. More than any country in the region, freedom and respect for minority religious groups is strictly enforced by law. Lastly, you can have all the ham and cheese sandwiches you can eat in Tel Aviv. The only catch is that non-kosher foods must be imported, and sold by claerly marked non-kosher establishments. Your Jew-hatred is equaled only by your ignorance of the modern State of Israel.

I’d be surprised if you even knew what a “Temple board meeting” is like. You assumed he was talking about Jews so that’s all you need to know in order to say the ACLU is controlled by Jews, right? Here’s some info you wouldn’t know about because your too antisemitic to actually figure it out for yourself: only one major Jewish sect has a tendency to refer to their synagogues as Temples. They do this because, historically, this sect has often seen their “temples” as having replaced the Temple in Jerusalem. For those who haven’t figured it out, I’m referring to the Reform movement, a group so far from traditional Judaism that they see Jewish law as a suggestion and they once considered making their Sabbath on Sunday so they could fit in better.
Needless to say, I’d find it quite surprising if the ACLU meetings weren’t like Temple board meetings.

Trust me, God is at work at this very minute and he is not preparing a Good Samaritan Story for all the Milk Toast Pastors of America to teach on Sunday. My guess, God is warming up his throwing arm in preparation of tossing Satan and his followers, supporters, and voters into the lake of Fire!
U.N. You must admit your “Why” comment was a slow pitch over the plate and had to swing. Thanks for the T-Up!
God Bless you, God Bless America – God Bless Israel and may God keep Jerusalem Safe!

Posted on September 23, 2012 at 5:00pmU.N. Hater – Calm Down – Understand the problem the World faces today is not Political – It is Theological!
I listen to Obama when he was running for his first term and I heard him edify something other than the God of Abraham. I knew then that the time is near and that America had a huge problem on our hands. Obama has the UN, the Fed, the Senate in his back pocket and he is deviant enough to trick our own Rep Congress.
Understand, God said it first – Right will become wrong and wrong will become right. Give me a heads up when you start seeing that take place throughout the World, because the next step will be God removing Lawlessness from the Earth.
When Lawlessness is removed, please don’t ask “why” is is that everywhere you turn, you see a crime more horrible than the last and their is nothing anyone can do about it.
America elected Obama. Obama speaks on America’s behalf, and America will pay for Obama telling Israel to go back to 1967 Borders. Let me translate what Obama said. Hey God, I know you gave Israel to the Jews in Genesis and you even marked it down to the very inch. But that is not working for the World today and I Obama would like to tell you God that you need to back down to smaller borders.
Then came the Democratic Arabic and Abortion National Convention – they had a vote to put God and Jerusalem back in to the platform.
Trust me God is not taking Maalox worrying about Obama or the UN.

Posted on September 23, 2012 at 12:13pmSmall stuff like this was a precursor to WW2 in fact everything I see going on now in the world is a complete copy of the things leading up to WW2.Governments blaming some religion for their woes then starting to restrict them box them in ship them off. Nationalism, border protection no giving an inch demanding concessions pointing fingers calling for death to the oppressor’s so and so on till War starts. And its usually one or two main figures pumping up the HATE getting the people in a frenzied state so they want WAR.
Sounds all too familiar to me

Posted on September 23, 2012 at 12:08pmI can understand banning burkas b/c they hide your full head and no one can identify you (especially when investigating a crime). but yarmulke’s barely cover the top of your head. banning them doesn’t make sense to me. hairstyles change all the time; your face doesn’t.

Posted on September 23, 2012 at 12:42pmAngle – I hope the great Arab people and there mighty leaders put a Fataw on you for talking down the Mighty Muslim Religion.
You can talk about evil Christians or the greedy Jews all you want, but how dare you talk about the Arab Muslims that way. I know the Bible tried to warn you Americans, but you would not listen, and now very soon will have a choice to except or reject Mohammed. If you reject Mohammed – off with your head you infidel.

Posted on September 23, 2012 at 11:57amPay attention people, laws of this type which limits the passive expression of your faith has already begun in this country. Such as outdoor Christmas decorations on your private property within city limits is banned in Fort Collins, Colorado. Another city in Arizona has band outdoor Christmas decorations on your own property and both have band any Christmas, holiday, or seasonal decorations on public property within the city limits. It’s here and creeping stealthy across the US. Ultimately they will attempt to ban the Holy Cross that we wear around our neck every day.

Posted on September 23, 2012 at 4:50pmIt’s not new. The ACLU (a jewish-run org.) has been suing schools for decades(the 1970′s, at least) to stop any mention of Christianity. I once naively gave money to them over the flag burning issue 20 yrs ago. Then I found out what they were really doing. They promote the Jewish agenda, enslavement of non-Jews. Muslims, not so much, because they don’t allow ‘Interest’ payments.

Posted on September 24, 2012 at 3:54pmDRS1969: Are you that gullible that you will believe any conspiracy theory that supports your hatred of the JOOOS? Yes, many, but surely not all, ACLU members and supporters are Jewish by birth. But the agenda they are pursuing is anything but a Jewish agenda in the classical sense. The “Jewish Agenda” if you will put aside your paranoia for just a minute, is to serve God, by following His commandments as set forth in the Written and Oral law, and Perfect the World in the Kingdom of the Almighty. The only thing in the “Jewish Agenda” that relates to non-Jews is that, if the Jews fulfill their mission (and they are far from it at present), they will be a Light unto the Nations of the world, and thereby offer an example of how one may serve his Creator. All of the other stuff that you call the Jews’ agenda are mearly very non-Jewish schools of thought that happened to be championed by assimilated Jews. You have no point to make other than that you are an anti-Semitic, paranoid Jew-hater.
