The Broward school district in Florida has endorsed what is being called a “groundbreaking” resolution encouraging K-12 students to celebrate Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender History Month this October, the Sun Sentinel reports.
Begun in 1994 by a Missouri high school teacher, according to the Miami Herald, LGBT History Month has been recognized by a wide variety of adult politicians and public figures for years. However it is not often celebrated in classrooms with young children, possibly because the topic is intrinsically sexual.
The Miami Herald continues:
“Administrators, teachers, staff, parents and students are encouraged to take part in LGBT History Month in any way that is most positive and uplifting to their schools and communities,” the [resolution] states. “And to coordinate efforts to highlight exemplary role models from the LGBT community.”
In Florida, where a Republican-dominated state Legislature has shown little interest in gay-rights issues, there is little chance of LGBT history being added to the state’s education curriculum anytime soon. Still, a supportive resolution from Broward, the nation’s sixth-largest school district, [is] significant.
Gay-rights advocates say LGBT History Month showcases civil-rights pioneers who are an important part of American history, and it can also boost the self-esteem of adolescents who may be struggling with their own emerging sexual identity, and who are often the targets of bullying.
“It gives youth a role model to look up to,” said Michael Rajner, a former member of the Broward school system’s Diversity Committee. “And to realize that they themselves are a wonderful human being, and can be a productive, important member of our society.” [Emphasis added]
Here is video further explaining LGBT History Month:
After the resolution passed, a 19-year-old student reportedly said he would mark the date down in his diary.
“Now everyone can be who they want to be,” he stated.
Broward County School Board member Nora Rupert added: “We want to promote equality for all of our children.”

“This crud is why we have a nearly 50%[sic] drop out rate.”
Well since this is one of a very few school systems to recognize October as gay history month, so it’s not contributing to our (actual) 25% drop out rate. Also, a “2011 National Climate Survey shows eight out of 10 students who report being harassed say it’s because of their sexual orientation” and many of those verbally and/or physically harassed drop out to escape the bullying. So teaching about LGBT history month would help improve the graduation rate of the gay student population, which is currently significantly lower than the average student graduation rate. So it will improve the average graduation rate, not lower it. Even if it didn’t significantly affect the graduation rate, if it can reduce bullying rates, then it is something all school districts should do. No kids should have to continue to be harassed because of something adults disagree on.

LGBT kids are believed to account for 30% of adolescent suicides. The much higher harassment towards and suicide rate among LGBT kids is just as serious and tragic as domestic violence and breast cancer. And probably more preventable than breast cancer. Reducing harassment and suicide attempts/events requires no invasive medical tests. It just requires cracking down on bullying (which should be done anyway), not telling kids that they can change (they can’t, ask the victims of ex-gay therapy, the multiple former ex-gay leaders who recanted, or Robert Spitzer), and teaching extreme parents that disowning their gay children is not the “Christian” way to handle things.

As long as there is diversity, there will those who embrace it and those who seek to fit all the square pegs into the round holes. I don’t ever see bullying stopping completely. It is human nature to seek to set ourselves apart from those who we find different than us (the majority ~ the “norm.”). I am not necessarily speaking of the classic playground bully who uses his physical size to intimidate smaller kids. I am speaking of the larger group of those who “pick” on/tease others they see as not fitting in, not being a part of the group. This has gone on since the beginning of time, is essentially a rite of passage in childhood, and I don’t see it stopping regardless of how many PC seminars and celebrations of diversity we do. Anyone who exhibits behavior that deviates from what is accepted as the norm (from wearing out of style clothing to acting “gay”) will be subject to some form of discrimination and ridicule by somebody along the way, especially if they try to demand acceptance from others. Trying to prevent bullying is an impossible task. We should be focusing on teaching kids assertiveness and strategies to avoid and confront bullying when it happens to them. Funny how kids who take martial arts are not the norm, but they are seldom picked on. Hmmmm, interesting.
And I disagree with you that a LGBT adolescents being harassed by someone about their sexual orientation equates with the tragedy of domestic violence and breast cancer in

Sep. 23, 2012 at 5:44pmThis is as sick as it gets. Where will it end? Just because someone thinks something is right doesn’t make it so. If people started having sex with pigs and a large amount of people called it normal, would that be ok as well. People need to fight the urges and temptation of sin, no matter what kind. I know people who are gay and I have fine relationships with them, but their homosexuality is a sin. They need to recognize that the same as I need to recognize when I sin. Their sin isn’t worse than mine. The diference is I know mine is sin and I ask forgiveness for my weakness. Just one mans opinion. No hate, just truth.

I think more people would take you seriously if you hadn’t just argued against your own point. “Just because someone thinks something is right doesn’t make it so…. but their homosexuality is a sin.” Lots of people believe being gay is fine, lots of people believe being gay is a sin. The difference is what evidence they have to back up their claims. That’s why I use evidence to back up my claims, so the exact same argument can’t be used against me.
Remember that if the Bible is the ultimate truth, then why isn’t there more scientific support of it or anything fundamentalists say? Everything in nature should support it, but so far that hasn’t been the case.

Every time the Nation of Israel turned away from God in the OT, homosexual activity, sexual perversion, and many other abominations saturated the whole land. Perverted laws, perverted judges, perverted politicians, rape, murder, bad is good, good is bad, God’s name is being thrown out the door everywhere, the churches have turned into entertainment centers, our individual rights are systematically being stripped away, oppression rules the day, liars, thieves, everyone sueing everyone for anything they can get, and on and on and on…….This land and the people in it are just swimming in sewage every day, and they call that “life.” The devil has a mission, “To kill, steal, and destroy. Sep. 24, 2012 at 8:47pmI remember my mom trying to explain this G&L concept to me when I was in the 1st grade, only because I somehow noticed it and demanded answers. After listening to her delicate (Catholic) interpretations, my astute 6 yo reply was: why don’t those men marry those women so they can have children? And leave everyone else alone. (I do not remember the catalyst of this conversation, just the reply.) No, the younger grades do not need to understand this stuff (spelling, addition and subtraction is difficult enough) and the high school students seem to willingly experiment with this behavior, (girls are encouraged, especially by boys), so yes, it’s here but is it something you are really willing to tolerate in the schools? Especially when you find photos of your daughter/granddaughter and her BFF on Facebook or her mobile? Wouldn’t home schooling be a richer, more rewarding path to follow, one that will provide an education that conservative Universities ultimately respect?

You really must be able to read between the lines if you’re able to come to a conclusion with absolutely no basis in fact. Kids aren’t being told to reject crap. That’s the point. If being gay is so unnatural, I don’t understand how people can believe that you can just indoctrinate people into it. Apparently it’s so popular that just telling kids that gay people exist will make them gay. It’s surprising that straight people even exist if that’s the case. Kids learn about gays just fine without being taught by the school. They learn it from their peers, except they’re learning that gay kids deserve to be bullied until they have issues that go with them for years at best or kill themselves at worst. I really hope today’s Christians learn enough about Jesus to know that he was against bullying. Even if he didn’t approve of Mary Magdalene’s behavior, Jesus didn’t torment her. All kids deserve a bully-free environment, and you should think about how you treat others if you disagree with that.
