Ultraconservative Islamists in Egypt Call for U.N. Legislation to Make Defaming Islam Illegal

The head of the largest ultraconservative Islamist party in Egypt is calling for United Nations legislation to make defaming Islam and the Prophet Muhammad illegal.

Salafist Nour Party leader Emad Abdel Ghaffour told Reuters on Saturday that Egyptian President Mohammad Morsi and other Muslim leaders should demand U.N. action during a meeting of the General Assembly in New York this week.

“We call for legislation or a resolution to criminalize contempt of Islam as a religion and its prophet,” Ghaffour told Reuters in an interview. “The voice of reason in the West will prevail if there is mutual respect, dialogue and efficient lobbying for this critical resolution.”

The Salafist Nour Party is the second-largest party in Egyptian parliament and played an important role in supporting the Muslim Brotherhood during presidential elections this summer, according to Reuters.

Ghaffour’s call comes amid widespread deadly protests throughout the Arab world blamed at least in part on an anti-Islam film that denigrated Muhammad as a womanizer, killer and child molester. In France last week, a magazine published satirical cartoons of a naked Mohammad, prompting French embassies and schools across the Middle East to close.

“A proposal to look into the root causes of the obvious racism against Muslims and Arabs as the recent fierce campaign against their Islamic beliefs shows is much needed,” Ghaffour said.

He told Reuters there are “interest groups” trying to subvert ties between Western countries and newly-elected Islamist governments by defaming Islam.

“A new reality in the Middle East has emerged after the toppling of autocratic regime of [former Egyptian President] Hosni Mubarak and others through democratic elections that brought newly-elected Islamist governments,” Ghaffour said. “There are interest groups who seek to escalate hatred to show newly-elected governments and their Muslim electorate as undemocratic.”

Ghaffour said his party intends to make a documentary film about the life of Mohammad to counter “Innocence of Muslims.”

Hardline Salafist Muslims take a purist interpretation of Islam similar to followers in Saudi Arabia. It was revived in Egypt in the 1970s based on a 19th century Saudi teaching, but was repressed under Mubarak’s rule. Experts believe three are 3 million followers of Egypt’s Salafi movement, according to Reuters.

    Oh this is really getting good now,,,,,,,,,,We see how it is,,,,,,Lets get the UN to make it a law,,,,wow what an amazing idea…who woulda thought….I sure bet obama will like it. What a great way to get of the hook as being that bad guy that took away our freedom of speech. now he can simply blame it on the UN, how convinient….. this really takes the cake,,,,and I’ll bet the UN will look very hard at it

      The UN is already working its way into every town and city in America with its UN Agenda 21. People aren’t even aware of what the Agenda is doing for it goes under generic terms like “sustainable” development and water resources. People fall for it thinking it is good for America. Look for this “defaming of Islam” slide in under some other name too. Agenda 21 and making criticism of Islam illegal are both unconstitutional.

      Glenn I say Ditto @ Patty Henry’s suggestion do to a special on the UN. The whole Agenda 21 thing is really beginning to creep us out. In the past, I always and without exception viewed the UN as the most impotent organization on earth. I have changed my opionion. They are dangerous and are a threat to the Constitution.

      BTW, even if the UN passes a regulation that prohibits speaking badly about Islam, I will be sure to speak even louder. We will not sit down and we will NEVER shut up! When is Obama going to ask Islam to give up their guns and religion?

    I fear that this is only the beginning. This kind of legislation will soon be coming to a courthouse near you. The media and government are in full appeasement mode in regards to Islam. They are fighting tooth and nail to appease these insane butchers, and I predict that it will soon be against the law to speak against the “Religion of Peace.” Forget about Islam’s dehumanization and torture of women. Forget about Islamic “honor killings.” Forget about Mohammed’s commandment to “convert and kill” all infidels (unbelievers) .This “religion” is a doctrine of devils and these people are all possessed by vile, demonic spirits. Everything they hear is “defamation, blasphemy, and insult.” You can drop a crucifix in a jar of urine and it’s art..but you draw a picture of Mohammed and you’re sentenced to death. You can blaspheme the Name of God, take prayer out of schools and forbid the display of His Laws, but you can’t deface a Koran because it’s their Holy Book…wake up, America..it’s coming

Now “WAKE UP WORLD” is more appropriate unless you want these savages (Geller is 100% right) in charge of everything. There is a massive push with Obama in THE LEAD with everything he has done. Obama and his video stuff was a setup, believe it with all my heart, and I have never been a conspiracy type in my life. Check out Proof Positive on YouTube about possible connections with the State Dept. and the Stanley Group regarding several name changes made to the video and who may have been responsible for that. Just based on Obama’s use of the video incessantly referring to it just smells really bad.

      Ohhhh, I get it. The point being that making it law, will not matter. I suspect it will in fact have the reverse effect and incite further desecration from antagonists. The UN passing such a law will amount to them telling US citizens we now must subscribe to Sharia law and when people figure that out no law will matter. It certainly should demonstrate to all the idiots that any protections we’ve had in the past are gone…completely. The reason the administration focused on the video was to set the stage for this action. It’s sickening…
