Two Marines to Be Court Martialed for Allegedly Urinating on Bodies of Taliban Fighters

WASHINGTON (TheBlaze/AP) — Two Marine non-commissioned officers will be court-martialed for allegedly urinating on the bodies of Taliban fighters last year in Afghanistan and posing for unofficial photos with casualties, the Marine Corps said Monday.

The charges against Staff Sgt. Joseph W. Chamblin and Staff Sgt. Edward W. Deptola are in addition to administrative punishments announced last month for three other, more junior Marines for their role in the urination episode.

The disclosure in January of a video showing four Marines in full combat gear urinating on the bodies of three dead men led to a criminal investigation by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service as well as a Marine investigation of the unit involved, the 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marines, which fought in the southern Afghan province of Helmand for seven months before returning to its home base at Camp Lejeune, N.C., last September.

In the video, one of the Marines looked down at the bodies and quipped, “Have a good day, buddy.”

In a statement Monday, the Marine Corps said disciplinary actions against additional Marines will be announced later. It also said there are “other pending cases related to this incident,” but said no specifics would be made public now.

The urination video was one in a string of embarrassing episodes for U.S. forces in Afghanistan in recent months. American troops have been caught up in controversies over burning Muslim holy books, posing for photos with insurgents’ bloodied remains and an alleged massacre of 16 Afghan villagers by a soldier now in U.S. confinement.

The Marine Corps said the urination took place during a counterinsurgency operation in the Musa Qala district of Helmand province on July 27, 2011. The decision to court martial Chamblin and Deptola was made by Lt. Gen. Richard P. Mills, the commanding general of Marine Corps Combat Development Command.

When the video came to light on YouTube, U.S. military officials sternly condemned the misconduct. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said he feared that it could set back efforts to begin reconciliation talks with the Taliban. Panetta called the act “utterly despicable.”

Chamblin and Deptola also were charged with other misconduct alleged to have happened on the same day as the urination incident. That includes dereliction of duty by failing to properly supervise junior Marines, failing to report their misconduct and failing to require them to wear their personal protective equipment.

When it announced in August that three enlisted Marines had been given administrative punishment but would not be court martialed in the urination case, the Marine Corps said one had pleaded guilty to urinating on the Taliban soldiers and posing for a photograph. It said another Marine pleaded guilty to wrongfully videotaping the incident and also posing for a photograph, and a third pleaded guilty to failing to report the mistreatment of human casualties and lying about it. The names of those three Marines were not released.

  For all of you supporting these men in their despicable actions… All I have to say to you is that you better hope that whatever God you pray to finds your sense of depravity personally amusing and for that spares you from whatever person Hell you have coming. There is a reason why the United States Military is better than the other militaries of the world. And it isn’t because we piss on the bodies of the dead or mutilate them in any other fashion. I truly feel sad for this nation because it is slowly being filled with turncoats like yourselves who will in the same sentence lambast another nation for its’ treatment of our service men while giving the 10% of our forces giving the rest of us a bad name an “attaboy”. It seriously sickens me. Exactly when do the actions of that 10% become so deplorable that you will finally say that enough is enough? When they start removing body parts as souvenirs? How about when they start castrating the bodies of their enemies? Maybe when they start playing dodgeball with the disembodied heads of people they’ve killed? I suggest that each and every one of you miscreants pick up a book called “The Rape of Nanking” and actually read. There is no excuse for the behavior of these Marines and I hope that they will be held accountable for their actions.

So Hijab Hillary got her way and these Marines will be Court Martialed for a prank that really hurt no one.
It is war, and boys will be boys.
American Indians used to scalp their victims; Muslims evidently like to sodomize their vanquished- what those Marines did seem pale in comparison.
But Hillary said of this incident:
“the men may be guilty of a war crime”.
“Anyone, anyone found to have participated or know about it, having engaged in such conduct, must be held fully accountable.”
I hope I will see the day when Hillary will be held accountable for her crimes.

Urinating on savages gets you court martialed,I wonder what getting your ambassador raped and murdered and three CIA operatives murdered gets you? Hopefully it gets you fired,charged with treason for being a fraud foreign exchange student convicted of treason and sentenced to a long prison term.

I don’t condone this behavior, but I bet those guys are just glad to get the heck out of there and not have to deal with the Obama military and his rules of engagement. Being court-martialed is not someting to be proud of, but being wounded or dying over there for absolutely nothing is worse.

  While I do not condone what they did, I certainly understand it. I was in the first Gulf War and have served w/Marines in the field after that as well.
  
  What they did was worth NJP (Art 15 under the UCMJ) but not courts martial. The powers that be are sacrificing good troops on the altar of political correctness.

  Since dishonorable dishonorable is not a protected status (IE **** or skin color) employers can legally discriminate and NOT HIRE.

We can put God in a bucket of urine…and that’s okay….and heartily defended by liberals….but to urinate on the bodies of those who would destroy America, who use children and women to detonate suicide bombs….who behead those who dare oppose their Islamic doctrine….who denigrate women…and who vow to kill Americans merely because they oppose their religious fanaticism…well, hell….that’s something we have to prosecute! Having served in the USMC during the Vietnam era, I am embarrassed at the Corps’ political capitulation regarding these two men. Apparently the wuss officers involved in this legal process will do anything to appease the liberal white house….while abandoning two heroes who put their lives and their asses on the line to defend their country….Shame on you, USMC….why don’t you grow a pair and tell the white house you’re going to give them the Medal of Honor?
