Male Vice Principal Under Fire for Paddling Female Teen as Corporal Punishment — Too Far?

Taylor Santos discusses how a male school official was allowed to administer corporal punishment. (Photo: ABC)
A number of grade schools in Springtown, Texas still allow corporal punishment on students. A requirement, however, is that an administrator of the same sex dole out the punishment.
When the classmate of 95-pound, 15-year-old Taylor Santos allegedly copied her homework, Santos says her punishment went over the line.
FoxNews.com relates:
[Male] Vice Principal Kirt Shaw disciplined the girl with a large wooden paddle, which he swung with a violent, upward motion, according to the girl’s mom, Anna Jorgensen.
“She was telling me it was numb and that it burned,” Jorgensen said. “And it looked like a burn. She slept on her side that night. She was more humiliated and embarrassed than anything, but the more she and I thought about it, it wasn’t fair and I thought I needed to do something about it.”
[...]
Shaw first had the girl call her mother to approve the punishment, which is required. Jorgensen said she agreed, but had no idea the whack would come from a man — or be so severe. Jorgensen said her daughter, a cross-country athlete who weighs just 95 pounds, was left with large, blistered wounds on her buttocks.
“I really don’t think he had to hit her that hard,” she said. “I’m not saying he went in to intentionally hurt my daughter, but intentional or not, it did happen.”
WFAA has more:
But rather than condemn the fact that Shaw apparently broke the rules, the school is considering eliminating the requirement that a school official of the same gender administer the punishment.
Springtown ISD Superintendent Mike Kelley reportedly justified the request by saying that the makeup of some of the schools makes it difficult to abide by.
Jorgensern has since revised her stance on corporal punishment, saying she will “never allow it again.”
“I feel like my child has been abused. If I did it to my own kid, [child protective services] would be at my house,” she remarked.
Adding that she is not after money and is not threatening legal action, Jorgensern says she is just trying to look out for what’s best for her kids.
“I think Taylor is proof that we need to keep that policy,” she argued. “I don’t believe a man intentionally meant to do that to her, but it still happens, because men are too big and strong to be hitting 96-pound girls.”

Posted on September 24, 2012 at 5:45pmI went to a public school that had swimming for my class on Thursday it was part of p e. For some reason all the boys had to swim nude. If you did something wrong your swats would be done on swim day. The couch made you get wet then would stand you on the edge of the pool touching your toes, with a plastic paddle he would swat you. If you fell into the pool that swat didn’t count. Depending on what you did wrong to deserve the swat decided how hard he would hit you to knock you in the pool. It worked, all you had to do is see it happen a couple times. You didn’t jack around in his class. Love/pray

Posted on September 24, 2012 at 6:56pmThe school is paddling because the parents didn’t when the children were younger. I don’t see what the difference is between a man spanking a teen or a full grown woman paddling a girl or a full grown man paddling a boy. We had corporal punishment in my gradeschool, and no one wanted to get in trouble. They had you bend over at the front of the class and grab your ankles, or took you in the hall with another teacher as a witness. We had all women teachers and they paddled both.

Posted on September 24, 2012 at 7:13pm@LORAIN.. the difference is this: when you were in school, EVERYONE was subject to corporal punishment at home. It was an even playing field. Beatings at home are now rare unless you grow up in a poverty- stricken household- like The Projects. When kids who get hit go to school- they are rarely socializing with others that get hit. Because of this, kids who get hit adopt a “victim” posture. It’s not that corporal punishment is “wrong” as much as it’s become “abnormal” and kids subjected to it are looked at as “freak-shows” that deserve sympathy. Kid’s who get beaten are in the minority. It’s a fact. Being a “minority” while being a “victim of physical abuse” is a recipe for failure. This is social evolution. I don’t approve of it but i’ll be damned if i disadvantage MY child over it. The solution is to be more “creative” with your punishment. Use the big brain God gave you.

Posted on September 24, 2012 at 7:48pmIf that were my daughter I would spend less time worrying about her behavior then how hard she was spanked. The fact that she was spanked by a male means nothing to me. Being male does not mean you cannot regulate how hard you spank. It sounds like the mother just counteracted everything the girl could have learned. I think she needed exactly what she got. Let the beatings begin!!!

Posted on September 24, 2012 at 5:39pmWhy don’t we focus on the real problem – the girl cheated. We can look at what proper discipline is but in the end – she cheated.
That parents don’t raise kids well has been a problem in our society for a while.
In the end – disfunctionality IS their punishment for themselves and their posterity.

Posted on September 24, 2012 at 5:51pmGood grief… she let her friend copy her homework. Didn’t you ever go to school? This crap happens all the time. How about giving her a “0″ for the assignment? How about making her stand through the next class instead of sitting? Can’t people be more creative than having a grown man beating a girl?

Posted on September 24, 2012 at 8:40pm“This crap happens all the time. How about giving her a “0” for the assignment?”
Unless I am mistaken the student opted-in to the paddling specifically to avoid discipline that would affect her grades. Also: How common a misbehavior is is irrelevant – discipline should always be enforced.
I think the real issue here is the line between discipline and abuse. The mother is probably right in that if she had left similar marks on her daughter and the school caught wind of it (atleast the ones up here in WA) would have CPS on the case, and that is the problem. Many look at any type of physical contact as “a beating” and others excuse abuse as discipline.
Like any discipline, physical or mental, it should be kept as mild and controlled as possible that still remains effective. If a swat is what it takes to get their attention, it’s better than letting the behavior thrive beyond repair.
In this case, she probably should have just been given a ’0′ for the assignment. It was an acedemic rule she broke so an acedemic punishment seems fit as she seems concerned about it. Other who don’t care about grades would need something different.

NO child should ever be physically assaulted, let alone a 15 year old girl, by anyone for any reason…ever! Makes me really question what direction are the moral compasses of some people pointing.

Gee, I guess I just wasn’t aware that the Blaze has real life crying-bleeding heart liberals who prefer to raise their children as spoiled, undisciplined brats.
The simple fact is that the girl and her mother both agreed to the corporal punishment and now are cry-babying around about it. The tender flesh where the paddle grabs attention is exactly the same for a teenage boy as it is for a teenaged girl… doesn’t matter what the sex is of the person wielding the paddle. A blistering red **** is generally pretty effective in making the point for future reference.

Posted on September 24, 2012 at 5:25pmI don’t think they use a paddle in our schools anymore. Detention with work around the school would be more effective. They have the kids clean up the trash & graffiti or help the teachers with their classrooms. The work isn’t overly onerous but not how you want to spend your free time. Multiple sentences on the chalkboard is effective also. ‘I will never do that again… I will never do that again… ‘ Suspension isn’t always advisable since the kid gets to stay home & maybe play video games & what kind of deterrent is that? An extra assignment to make up for the one botched also works with some kids because who in their right mind wants extra schoolwork? Standing in a corner with her nose to the wall would be more acceptable than having a male administrator or teacher spank her with a paddle. Detention kids still get teased & there is still a certain amount of stigma attached to staying any additional time at school. It’s still a bummer.

Posted on September 24, 2012 at 5:31pmI agree. There are smarter ways to punish stupidity. I’ve coached youth sports for years… the kids that literally get their arse whooped at home are the ones always starting fights with the others on the team. The primadonnas that never get punished are horrible too. The kids who behave best are simply the kids who’s parents are involved and insist on yessir/ nossir, thank you, and please. It’s usually enforced by with- holding privileges. One of those parents, when they found out their kid
“pantsed” a team-mate during practice, made their child scour the woods around the field for an hour picking up litter after a game. Never had a problem with him again.

Now I know why there’s such a disconnect between people, common logic is missing entirely. Let’s apply a hypothetical using the same logic you suggest to abide to here:
Let’s say I’m a teller at a bank, and I hand over a bunch of money to a buddy of mine. The money didn’t belong to him, and henceforth he went and bought a new car with it. Since it’s him that benefited from it, I shouldn’t be held accountable for my actions in the crime? According to the logic you run your life by, I’m innocent of any wrong doing and didn’t cheat the system?
I will never agree with the 2+2=5 logic you’ve come to cherish. You’ve had all logical sense and critical thinking removed from your thought process Verce; I’m sorry society has failed you so terribly. You must be miserable, life must seem so unfair and incomprehensible with such an illogical mindset. Truth must be impossible for you to recognize. It’s so sad what we’ve done to people that makes many think like you. Breaks my heart, truly. We have got to turn this around for the sake of people like you.

It’s only a deterrent if it’s done in front of the rest of the student body and the kid gets teased about it later. It’s a tool for provoking positive peer pressure…. and quite frankly an out- dated one at that.

Posted on September 24, 2012 at 5:02pmWe just had a similar incident here in the Tulsa area recently. In both cases, the parents agreed to the punishment. In both cases, they have complained that their child was spanked too hard. The kid here in Tulsa was a male. I will agree that I would not want a male spanking my daughter but I thought that most schools that use corporal punishment had to have a witness to observe the punishment. I’m sorry though. I’m of the mind that cheating is the same as lying and I cannot tolerate lying. I say beat it out of them before they end up being the kind of adult that no one can stand.

Only in extreme cases of misbehavior or fighting were we given paddles. Never to the point it left a burn-like mark. Surely a red mark which disappeared after a couple hours. It sounds as if he took some frustration out which is the most egregious thing you can do as an administrator or parent. This is an instance of needed further investigation but you can’t say the entire idea is flawed. I’d put him on leave & take the paddle away from him.
